There's quite a few dragons I've not been keeping up with, so... I can't really figure which combinations are ideal....
In any order, combo as you like. Rainbow fails are fine, as long as it's still has the shortest averages:
2 of each: ironwood malachite scoria plasma seasonal silver
1 left: gold olympus
There's also the sapphire dragons left, but it's not like they can be combo-ed with anything..
Thanks a bunch!
Um, since I do have all the other dragons available on dragonvale (even bone, reindeer, etc), feel free to use them in breeding combinations..?
Hi miew, Welcome to the forum.
If you have a steady income of gems, consider buying Ironwood or Malachite; they are pretty cheap.
As for some double/triple-up opportunities: Malachite and Scoria = Metal+Moss/Tree/Clover Malachite and Scoria AND Silver = Metal+Paper (lots of ugly fails, though, inc Forge and Rainbow) Ironwood and Scoria = Iron+Plant Seasonal and Silver = Chrome+Paper (lots of fails, inc Forge and Gold and Rainbow) Seasonal and Olympus = Butterfly+Clover
There's nothing to be done for Plasma right now, which requires Lightning+[Water hybrid, such as Seaweed]. But he's cheap too if you would prefer to buy him with gems.
So, a good strategy might be to use Metal+Paper for a while until you get one of the dragons you are after, and then switch it up to trim off unnecessary fails.
Once you get a Silver, a good idea is to breed it with your Gold dragon, giving you a 50% chance of getting a Silver.
I'm still hunting for that last Gold Olympus. Have had several bronzes and silvers, but only one gold.
I haven't been playing much so have fallen behind. I've never needed more than 2 at once. Now I need:
Dragonvale
Need:
Silver Olympus Gold Olympus Silver treasure Ironwood Paper Sapphire Rain
Obviously rain is most urgent so I can get sapphire in time. Going to reactivate the alerts on my iPad so I don't waste any breeding time
Hi Berry,
Let's not waste any time; you need two Rain dragons, STAT: Fog+Mud, with only 2 possible failures: Fog and Mud. As you already know, Sapphire = Mountain+Rain.
Oh, but wait, you need Paper too!??!?!?! Eek. The Paper Dragon leaves the Market on September 24. This means that you will have to split up your breeding sites so that you can work on Paper and Sapphire at the same time. That's unfortunate.
My recommendation is to work on Paper in your Epic Breeding Sanctuary (because it leaves the market sooner) and use your cave for Sapphire related breeding. Once you get 2 Papers, or it leaves the market, get working on Sapphire in both sites (presuming you have two sites).
Paper = Sakura+Ice (best average fail time) or Mountain+Flower/Poison (slightly longer avg fail time).
After that, I'm afraid I have bad news...
There is no way to double-up on Ironwood and Olympus. If you have a good gem income, consider buying Ironwood; he's pretty cheap. Else, Ironwood = Plant+[Metal hybrid, such as Chrome].
The best combination for Olympus (considering avg fail time) is Air+Quake. Butterfly+Tree/Moss/Clover is a good combination too, with Rainbow and Seasonal as possible failures.
Wishing you great success with your urgent Paper/Sapphire breeding needs.

Gents, thanks for this thread. There's a Few dragons left that I'm going to trying to get, but was looking for breed options to help maximize the ability to potentially get two or more from single breeding options, I.E. if I use two certain dragons to breed, will ther be a chance to get multiple ones that I need? Hoping that there's a few matches that will give me multiple chances to get what I need. Here's what I'm looking for: Seasonal, silver and gold Olympus, current, plasma, malachite, ironwood, and a secOnd paper, sun, moon, blue fire, frost fire.
I have most of the basic and hybrids not mentioned above. As far other limited/rares that I have: silver, gold, blue moon, bronze Olympus, dodo, sandstorm, rainbow, firework, paper, panlong

Thanks gentlemen, Lungbutter
You are very welcome, LungButter. The greatest thanks to Fletch and myself is for people to write in with their questions. So, thanks for writing.
Let's get to work.
The bad news first: BlueFire, FrostFire, Current, Plasma, Malachite, and Ironwood are all opposite dragons, which makes it very difficult to include them as a failure in most combinations, especially combinations for epic dragons (because epic dragons require multiple elements).
As you have a Panlong and a Paper, you have some good options open to you. To confirm, you don't have the Bloom, Butterfly, or Love Dragons?
Silver, Sun, and Moon = Cactus+Mine/Steel or Copper+Evergreen/Reindeer/Lichen/Snow or Chrome+Storm Silver, Paper, and Malachite = Paper+Metal Seasonal, Olympus, Paper, Sun, and Moon = Paper+Sonic
A good strategy is to try for a combination that allows for lots of possible sought dragons (such as Paper+Sonic) and once you are successful with a dragon or two, change to a more restrictive combination.
Another thing to keep in mind is by breeding Gold (Treasure) with Silver (Treasure), you have a 50% chance of getting Silver.
The thing with opposite dragons is that their combination is [Pure Element]+[Hybrid]. So you can't ever get BlueFire and FrostFire with the same combination, because BlueFire requires a (pure) Fire Dragon as one of the parents, and FrostFire requires a (pure) Cold Dragon as one of the parents.
To not leave you empty handed, here are some combos for your opposites:
BlueFire = Fire+Lichen/Evergreen/Reindeer FrostFire = Cold+Flower/Poison Malachite = Metal+Pollen/Willow, also a possible fail in the combination above for Paper+Metal Ironwood = Plant+Chrome Current = Water+Scorch/Firefly Plasma = Lightning+Seaweed/Swamp
And for whatever reason, opposite dragons are cheap to buy with gems. So if you have a good daily income of gems, consider buying them.

This is great, thanks Myke. I do have a silver and 3 golds, so I'm good there. I do see where I wasn't clear however as i need silver Olympus and gold Olympus. And yes, no love, butterfly, bloom.
I do have a good gem trade group, however seem to try to save them for when I'm running into a deadline (like the upcoming paper deadline) so that I can speed up fails. If I can get that seccond paper, then I'll just buy a few of the cheap ones.

Sorry about that, LB. I also misread.
So forget about the first two combinations I gave you (that include Silver Treasure).
The third combination (Paper+Sonic) is the one you need to start with.
Do you have 1 Gold Oly and Silver Oly already? Or are you missing two of both?
Air+Quake is a great combination for the Olympus dragons. Cactus+Panlong give you a shot at Seasonal and Olympus.
Again, though, I recommend starting off with Paper+Sonic until you've scored a sought dragon or two, and refining your breeding. Don't be shy to re-post after you have a dragon or two, or after a new dragon is released, as it could dramatically change your breeding picture.
There's quite a few dragons I've not been keeping up with, so... I can't really figure which combinations are ideal....

GL, and let us know how you make out.
Thanks for the welcome!
Still plugging away at those sapphires! I think I have one coming along in the EBS, if i read the timings right.
I do have a steady supply of gems from the colosseum and gemstone island, but friends, not so much... (it seems hard to find people to exchange gems daily to, many don't seem to return any at all... if you know of anywhere to direct me to, that'd be so helpful!) Thus I'd leave the gems for speeding breedings/ upgrading when BFS releases something if possible!
koala with your Gold Olympus too! Same here, it's a good thing they're not limited dragons!
Question: with so many long fails, would breeding Metal x Paper still be a good idea, or should I simply separate Scoria and breed Air x Iron? And do Malachite/Ironwood + Silver separately.
offtopic: On the mainpage, it says to breed sakura x ice/iceberg for paper dragon, and that it has no chance for a rainbow ..Doesn't that combination still result in a rainbow as a possible fail?
wrt your off topic, Sakura+Ice does still have a chance at Rainbow. It is the recommended breeding combination, as the addition of the Water element brings down the average fail time by a bit. I'll arrange for the landing page to be corrected.
wrt Metal+Paper: agreed that it has some pretty long fails, which is why I mentioned them. If it were me, I would attempt Metal+Paper until I got one sought Dragon, then I would change my combination. I can't prove it, but my hunch is that tripling up on the dragons you are hoping to breed offsets the potential long fails. However, if you aren't keen on the risk, then break it up.
Fletch, maybe you want to weigh in on the best statistical approach?
Ah, thanks! eh? the Gem exchange thread was a little intimidating, as it seems that everyone already has their gem trading partners already, but I'd look there then!
Hmm, okay. I just wasn't sure if the extra dragon offsets all those long fails, so I was just wondering.. I'd think about it a little more till i get the other Sapphire!
FINALLY! I thought I would never ever ever get a paper dragon, despite having tried for nothing but since it was announced. I finally got one! Maybe even two! Sakura and Ice, Sakura and Ice. little happy dance. :-)

Congrats.
Having those 3+ element dragons makes trying for several consecutive dragons a lot easier. I hope you get your second. Let us know.

I can't prove it either but we think % accumulate when you add more Rares to the possible outcomes. We're testing for it now, but it takes a while to get the data.

hmm But assuming it does... is it worth the long fail times?
