Sorry for this self serving post, however "drum roll" --just hit LV45, "thunderous applause from those not already there" and now on to the next goals. Have a great day everyone
Looking around and enjoying life!
All Dragons are safely in their habitats or in the HC

Applause, applause, applause!!!
If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all/Gloom, despair, and agony on me... {HeeHaw, 1970s - totally showing my age)
I've hit a streak of luck lately, and been knocking down my goals left and right. Got Peridot on my second try. Bred Ironwood, Malachite, and Dodo the "hard" way. Same with an Electrum egg.

Aaaaand, here's why reading the wiki is a good thing (she says to herself): "The dragon in the Colosseum does not earn income in its habitat during the event, although first place medals award the amount of income the dragon would have earned"
Gracious me. At any point feel free to say, "Mom, go here and read the manual" (okay, the Wiki). I've read some of it - a lot of it, actually, but don't remember seeing that part. I wondered why different earning levels for the Colosseum.

It's such a good feeling! No more exp at the races! ;D
Kindle park1: nearly all dragons are frolicking in their habitats! (A Thorny little problem to resolve...)
Smartphone park2: Geode, a dragon with rocks in! Still to breed 4 dragons...
Well, after 7 days of non-stop breeding in both my cave and on my island, I have managed to breed 7 crystal, 6 moss, 5 each quake and ash, plus the one I don't yet know which it is, and 4 each cactus and tree. I'm hoping to be able to breed 3 Peridot, as I have none. I only started playing mid-September of last year. Averaging one crystal a day is going to make for a long month.

Actually, depending on your playing style, it will earn more
Extreme example: a L20 Plant dragon will almost certainly get you a gold in a plant event. This will return you 308,160 DC. The same dragon in a large habitat will need the habitat cleared every couple of minutes over the 24 hour period if you are to have any hope of earning the same cash. koala achieving that.
Main GCID: GregDarcy Secondary: GregDarcyToo All gems friends spoken for. Happy to accept friends for party hats. I blame Apple's auto incorrect for all my typos. I actively discourage challenges. All challengers are unfriended.
Another reminder, we've already started a LAST CALL COMPETITION signup sheet for the next new gemstone dragon. We've got some pretty good participation so far, but more is betterer!
Please stop by the competition thread and add your name!

So, can someone clarify this for me? I've been putting low earning dragons in the collosseum to minimise the DC loss. So, should I be putting in the highest earners instead? My brain hurts trying to work it out.
And does anyone know how I can find out which dragons go in which habitats with which boosts to maximise DC while having all dragons on display?

Simple and by the numbers: you want to use high level dragons with the correct element and with the highest DC/min value possible.
I can get into more detail if you need further explaination.

This is an incredibly complex question with no one true answer.
I can tell you what I do or what I might recommend, but the value of any setup varries depending on your playstyle and what dragons you have in your park...

For the Colosseum, when you win gold, you get 5 gems (which is the real prize) and 24 hrs worth of un-boosted DC based on the dragon you put in to compete.
You might be tempted to put a low-earning dragon in the Colosseum, so you don't miss out on potential high-earning boosted DC from a habitat. But in reality, the guaranteed 24hrs-worth of DC from winning gold will ALWAYS exceed the potential DC you could earn from the same dragon in your park. Why, you ask? Well, because you need to sleep, for one, and because it's tricky to perfectly time your sweeps.
As BS says, that's a by-the-numbers explanation. That being said, the real point of the Colosseum is to win gems. The DC is just a bonus.
For boosts, there are almost an infinite number of possibilities. The best advice I can give you is to pair your boosts with high-ceiling habitats. Don't sweat boosting Plant, or Lightning habitats, as these reach their cap before you have finished sweeping your park. Cold habitats are great for boosting, because there are some high-earning dragons that have the cold element. In the early goings, most metal and earth dragons are very low earning. But as you progress in the game, you'll want to rearrange your boosts to maximize earnings in Metal and Earth habitats.
Because Lightning and Plant habitats (and Fire too) have a low DC cap ceiling, I use them to house the dragons I need for breeding, or to display low-earning, albeit pretty dragons. I use Metal, Earth, Cold and Water habitats to min/max earning.
As you acquire epic dragons, you can start to phase out your elemental habitats and build epic habitats. And you can put these habitats anywhere, as they are unaffected by boosts
I have always thought putting at least a min 15 level dragon, having at least one common element, in the colosseum will ensure a gold medal win. I was wrong. I placed a level 15 ice dragon in the cold event, and earned a silver medal. Again with a level 15 sakura in the plant event and got another silver.
I have a dilemma. All my hybrid dragons are at level 15, and I have more epic dragons. I am needing at least 25 or so gems for each shrine to bring them to gold. All habitat are fully occupied. I have one spare habitat. Cannt afford another island just yet. Though I dont want to use the gems, have about 450, to upgrade the shrines but I might have to. Is there another way to bring the shrines to gold without using the gems?

Yeah, level 15 dragons only "guarantee" gold for so long. Eventually your park value out levels that.

No! You do not need to upgrade all 8 shrines to gold!
You just need to upgrade the ones that you need for your top competitors.
You can upgrade as few as two shrines if you have the right dragons.
For example, if you have Paper, Panlong and Libery you can upgrade just two shrines and lavel all three dragons to 20.
Or you could use Panlongm, Bloom and Liberty and still only need two shrines gilded.
Lots of 2-3 gold shrine combinations are possible.

Yes, you can do it the expensive, long and difficult old fashinoed way

First question,do you have two of every hybrid leveled up to 15? I would consider this the first step toward getting all gold shrines. Depending on your level, a fair number of these dragons may have to live in your hibernation cave. The rest comes down to what limited dragons you have collected. Even if you have collected two of every dragon that has ever been released, certain elements, e.g. water, metal, lightning, would still require addition breedings to make their shrines gold without gems.

Hi,
1. How do you put a quote in a box, outline it?
2. I started DV mid Feb 2013. So I missed out on Panlong and Paper. However I do have 4 Sakuras, 1 Liberty, and 1 Bloom. I guess from what you are saying it is most advantageous for me to gold the plant shrine.
3. Thank you for your reply. I read all the posts since I joined the list, April or May? I have to say some times I got confuse when all were technical, max out on DC on panlongs, DRs, soltices etc...lol, silly me. I am getting better though.
1) Surround the text with {quote} in front and then {/quote} at the end. Only replace those {} with [ ] instead.
2) Do you have any other 3 element dragons?
Liberty - Air, Metal and Lightning Bloom - Plant, Lightning and Cold Sakura - Fire, Earth, Plant
With that combination, you still need another dragon to cover the Water events.
I would recomend Plasma or Current if you have one.
With those 4 dragons, you could just gild your Plant and Lightning shrines and that would allow you to level up all 4 dragons you need for each of the 8 competitions.
Also, keep in mind you don't need to get all four dragons to level 20 immediatly. Raising them each to 16 or 17 wil probably start netting you Gold again.
3) Yeah, the discussion can get pretty arcane sometimes, but feel free to ask questions until things make sense/your head stops hurting!
