I started playing sometime in February. With all the things to do, it was a bit overwhelming. I set my priorities on getting the limited dragons when I could. I managed to get both a Love and Amethyst but didnt have enough time for a Rose. Now, normally I don't spend money on IAP but I really wanted that Amethyst since it was my favorite looking dragon and is my birthstone, so I actually bought some gems trying to get one (lets just call that a thank you to BFS ). Ever since then I've been hooked and things have been going smoothly and I haven't missed a limited yet. All in all, it's pretty difficult to get a lot of the limited dragons when you first start out. But this game is all about patience and the luck of the draw. Theres always something for me to do at the moment. And I guess that's exactly why I love this game so much!
Glad to hear you are doing so well with starting a new park kiyo. It is always fun to hear how folks are progress and the approach they take to DV. You will find most all of us hear addicts as well.

Thanks! Of course it's always great when there's such a helpful community such as this.
And you guys hear addicts huh... Boy sure sounds like an inconvenience. Aha ha ha...okay I'll stop now.

You'll certainly hear it when this here addict manages to breed the dragon she's looking for. I can't jelp but let out a cheer.
Hi Buffy. I love that you let your son check to his heart content. That's so cute. My grand kids have helped spend my gems a couple of times but now they aren't interested, so my parks are safe (I think). I started a second park during the middle of the bring em back. I play the second park differently. If I get the dragons yay for me but I don't stress if I don't. So far though I've gotten at least one of all the limiteds including DR. I've been trying for my gold oly and it has proved to be as elusive as it was in the primary park. I have big money earners so am well over a billion and I haven't fed my dragons as fast so don't have but a couple of silver shrines but have millions of treats so could start the shrine grind if I wanted to but it isn't as big of a priority as it was the first time.
Like Deb, I started a second park, on my Kindle Fire, a few months ago - and I do play it differently than my primary one on my iPhone. For one thing, since the Android version requires the use of Facebook friends, I only have six friends so I can keep MUCH better track of my giving. I'm never stressed in either park about whether I get gems back or not, and have only purchased gems once (so far, haha!) in the second one. I also, again like Deb, don't stress about the dragons. I unexpectedly got a Jade, so I bought a gem island, and will continue trying for each month's gem dragon - took until yesterday to get my Pearl! I also, VERY unexpectedly! am incubating a Double Rainbow, while trying desultorily for a Summer. Can't get one for love OR money in my main park.
Mostly I'm just playing it however it comes about, not (except for gems) going out of my way for EVERY dragon that's available, for instance. It's a stress-free fun!
I started in late November 2012 when I got my new HTC phone. My daughter plays on her ipad so not compatible; I have no DV fb friends so I have built up with no help from gem swapping. I did buy some gems a few days ago, to finally get upgrades for breeding cave and island. I've used them up on giant habitats as well. I used the dragon races to level up to 40, and then for food and cash to level dragons up for the bronze shrines. Really annoyed to have to get more experience to level 45, slowed up my dragon feeding.
I missed out on much of the BEB time as the park was too small to breed limiteds and rares. I also did not get the significance of limited dragons until Apocalypse and Panlong had disappeared... Now I concentrate on them, trying to get two, then going for rare and opposite dragons in any spare time.
Still trying to level up my dragons to 15. Most are hovering around 14. I have my first DR in the nursery, so will be setting up some rainbow coin farms as breeding allows.
I haven't a clue what my park's name is, or how to find it out, can someone enlighten me?

Kindle park1: nearly all dragons are frolicking in their habitats! (A Thorny little problem to resolve...)
Smartphone park2: Geode, a dragon with rocks in! Still to breed 4 dragons...
I started playing in around march when my girlfriend introduced me to the game in around March. I've always enjoyed collecting in games (completing the museum in animal crossing, doing quests in MMOs) so i figured i'd like this game. The first thing i noticed was that because i use an android and don't have facebook i have no way to gift gems which really bothered me at first, still does a little but i'v gotten used to it. I started off in March just trying to get 1 of each different breed of dragon and then realized hey, limited dragons go away and don't come back for a really long time so for the most part i'v gotten every limited (except the century dragon =() since then. I believe my first limited dragon was the Diamond Dragon and i'v enjoyed trying to get all of the new ones to come out. As i started saving up gems from pretty much only the Colosseum and the 1 a week from my Diamond Dragon i foolishly used around 40 gems to speed up breeding which i regretted almost instantly. I didn't have the breeding island until around level 22, and didn't upgrade to 2 and 3 stands in the hatchery until around 23 and 24. As long as i just get new breeds while getting the new limited's to come out its not too overwhelming.

Welcome. Great to have you here.
I have to ask, how does your game work if you don't have Facebook? I have been told previously that on Android the game only works by connecting to your Facebook account. Maybe someone can shed some light on this?

As far as I know, it means he's playing in a local park, which means if something happens to his device he'll lose everything.
I would recommend creating a FB profile. Doesn't need to have a shred of real info at all. Just use it so you can backup the game online...

I have a handful of friends who have only played for about a month and are missing lots of things from the game. However, to be frank, they just really don't care about their park score in GC, having the say that they have collected all of the dragons, or even leveling up their shrines. That's what makes DV such a great game: You can play at your own pace. They actually are more vigorated to play DV more, being able to collect new things that seem so old to us and keeping DV so alive today.
Yea i've been thinking about doing that lately. I'd be pretty mad if i were to lose all of my progress so far.
If you do make a fb profile, you can then send and receive gems. There's a thread where you can look for android players to form a gem circle, so you can gift and get several gems a day.
ATM I have two gems going spare...

I've been playing since late April, when I got my iPad Mini. I found this board rather quickly, which was a HUGE help in figuring things out! I missed the April gemstone, Bloom, and Terradiem partially because I didn't totally understand Limiteds and partially due to not having the proper breeding pairs.
Now that I understand Limiteds better, I do get a bit overwhelmed sometimes when several come out at once. For you "oldsters" you already have some of the Limited dragons, but for example, this week I've been trying for four different dragons - Firework, Liberty, Ruby, and DR! It can get quite tricky trying to find combos that will give me two or more of these as possibilities. June also seemed really busy, with Jade, Pearl, Bearded, Butterfly, and Summer. I'm missing several regular hybrids and non-limited Epics because I find myself busily trying to breed the limiteds and ending up with fifty-two Scorches in a row.....
I've only purchased gems once, and only $4.99 worth. I try to have the max number of Islands and Habitats that I'm allowed, but I haven't used gems to buy additional Habitats yet. I just (gulp) paid 100,000,000 this morning for my 7th Island, so my Dragon Cash is really low right now. I'm almost at Silver for all of my shrines, but I'm not sure I'll try to grind all of them to gold. I find that the game goes through phases of being very exciting, followed by phases of being more boring. I jusy hit Level 30 and was disappointed that the upgrades for Lvl 30 were kind of Meh. I was hoping to unlock Giant Water Habitats! It also seems harder and harder to reach the next level, especially since I'm not getting as many XP on the Racetrack as I used to.
All in all, I really love playing DV and check it several times a day! This board in particular has been a HUGE help in making the game fun and engaging! Thanks, Mods, for such an awesome place to hang out!
GCID- peanutzmom:) And yes, you need to include the smiley face
I give gems randomly to those who seem to need them because I'm not organized enough to keep a list, but I'm always looking for more Party Hat friends!
I just wanted to jump in and give you some combination suggestions. If you breed Copper + Blazing/Butterfly, you have a chance to get Liberty, FireWork, and DR.
And also, the combo for Ruby (as I'm sure you know) is Chrome + Scorch, which can get you a Ruby, FireWork, and DR.
So a good strat would be to use your breeding Island for Copper+Butterfly/Blazing, until you get a Liberty or two. Use your breeding cave for Chrome+Scorch until you get a Ruby or two.
Liberty leaves the market before Ruby, which is why I suggest using your island for Liberty. Once you have a Lib or two, move your Ruby combo to the island. Or maybe use both sites for Ruby.
Anyhoo, that's all I wanted to say. And koala, of course. I wanted to say that too.

Thanks, Myke! GMTA - I have Copper + Butterfly on my island and Chrome + Scorch in my cave, and I just keep hitting "Retry" every time a breeding wraps up. I got one Firework, but have my fingers crossed for a second. I'm pretty sure I have a Liberty on the Island as of this morning, because I got some wonky breeding time 1:03:59 or something like that. Now I just need that Ruby to show up! I keep getting sooooo many Scorch and Firefly fails on that one!

Just signed up, looks like such a nice community you have here :)
I started playing around Valentine's Day at a friend's recommendation. Have been thoroughly addicted ever since!
I can't say I've found it TOO overwhelming, so far I've managed to get all of the limiteds without too much drama. Struggling a bit with the ruby, but still have heaps of time! I caved in and bought a few gems early on--was more than happy to give a couple of dollars to a company that created such a great game, and I've definitely gotten my money's worth in terms of entertainment. Other than that, I made sure to find 6 friends to trade with early on--that plus the Colosseum means I'm pretty much on par with most of my high-level friends in terms of gem income. It's a nice catch-up mechanism :)
I've just started clearing space recently for a display egg island, but don't want to get too invested in that just yet--I'll display what I can, but need to focus on getting dragons first! Determined not to let myself get too disappointed if I miss a limited egg.. they'll be back.
Still have millions of epics and a few opposites to breed, but that's what I enjoy about the game--not going to run out of things to do anytime soon! Been trying to leave those on the backburner while I grab the limiteds as they come through. I'm at level 33 currently, and love visiting my higher level friends' parks and admiring all their gorgeous limiteds.

I started playing a week ago on my android. I stumbled across the app and fell in love with the graphics. I followed the tutorial and quickly realized I had to either plan to spend money or limit my expectations. Because I'm retired, I have way more time than money so I will not be in a rush to build the world's greatest park. After a couple of days I decided to start reading blogs and found a great tip. That is to not use the gems during the tutorial. I opened a dummy facebook account so that I could send gems to myself and also started a new park. This time I followed the advice on the blog and saved the gems. That allowed me to upgrade the egg hatching area immediately. What a difference that makes! I also didn't clear as much of the island when I started my second park. I am still making errors because I haven't read enough. For instance, I was excited to see the moon and sun habitats. I bought a sun hab without realizing that I could only buy a sun dragon with gems. My 9 gems isn't going to cut it. I've discovered breeding combos and in my two parks I have made a few of the early hybrids. Poison, flower, tree, lava, obsidian. I plan to read more before I go too much further. One person who also has a "games only" facebook account contacted me as a new friend so it was wonderful to have a gem and a park to visit. I love this game but I will have to limit my experience to what I can do on a gem-free budget. PS - I have absolutely no idea what most of you are talking about. Is there a Dragonvale glossary somewhere?

Hi Susie. Glad you posted. We have a lot of knowledgeable folks to answer any questions you might have. Would not be a bad idea to add lion to your friends list. He's sort of a nice guy but don't tell him I said that. Lol. It is kind of hard coming into a forum new but what's great about this one is someone will surely answer any of your questions and it doesn't matter if it has been asked and answered already several pages back or different thread. Although if there is a lot of good information in the thread where it was you might be directed to the link so you can find it easily and read all the good stuff your self. Also if you're on an android device bloodstone is a good guy for info he's our resident guru on all things android. By the way we nick named him BS for short so if you see that think of bloodstone.
