"Which dragon should I level up next?"
That is the question. Hopefully, this is the answer!
On February 15th, 2013 BFS released an update to Dragonvale that changed one of the fundamental mechanics of the game: using level 15+ dragons while breeding now offers an improved chance of producing a rare dragon egg. In fact, based on the in game flavor text:
"Dragons level 15 and up have a better chance of breeding rare dragons."
"Using two level 20 dragons significantly increases your chances of breeding rare dragons."
On October 9th, 2013, DragonVale 2.0 was released and this new rule was put in place:
"Better Odds At Breeding - Dragons level 11 and above have increased chances of breeding rare, epic and gemstone dragons."
All in all, sounds good to me! And who doesn't want high level dragons anyhow? After all, they produce more DC per minute and look awesome strutting around their habitats.
Unfortunately, they are also quite expensive to grow in terms of the amount of treats needed to level them up. Before you can do that, your park needs to be at the the appropriate level. While you can theoretically feed dragons up to level 20 at Park Level 20 now, it's unlikely you will have the resources to do so. Raising a dragon from hatchling to level 15 requires 327,660 treats per dragon. Going from hatchling to level 20 costs 10,485,740! There are other guides out there that deal with various ways to earn DC, so I won't repeat all that info here.
Now, at this time, there are several key details that we don't really know:
- The exact percentage bonus granted by dragons level 11-20. We don't know what BFS considers a "significant bonus".
- We don't know how the percentages stack or how they interact with the bonus offered by the Epic Breeding Island.
So lets get some stuff out on the table before we really dive into things:
- We now know which dragons are supposed to receive this bonus: Gemstone, Limited, Epic, Epic Limited, Opposite and the Golden Hybrids. Since this guide is focused on Gemstone, Limited and Epic Limited Dragons, everything listed below will get a bonus when you use high level dragons.
- We want to have the best possible shot at breeding our rare dragons once they are "in season", so any bonus is a good bonus! Hopefully the bonus ends up being worth the time and DC invested into getting our dragons into the 11-20 level range.
- We don't have unlimited resources to make all the dragons in our park level 15+. We might get there eventually, but at almost 10.5 million treats per level 20 dragon, it's going to take a LONG time. So we have to be selective with what we level up. Obviously now that the bonus kicks in at 11+, it's more accessible to lower level players.
- Many of the release dates listed below are educated guesses. They are based largely on the timing from previous events and what passes for my common sense. For example, Gemstone dragons typically show up on the first day of the month and leave on the first day of the following month, so I'm pretty confident those dates are correct. The Solstice, Equinox and the two Eclipse dragons are made available to coincide with astronomical events, while many other limited dragons are available based on various seasons or holidays. There's a bit more guesswork involved with those.
- This list will need to be regularly updated, as BFS releases new dragons. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up with it.
First things first, here is a quick list of all the dragons recommended in the combos below. The number after their name is the number of combos they are used in. Dragons listed in bold are Limited

Total Dragons Needed: 74
As you can see, Flower (16), Firefly (13), Mountain (10), Cactus, Seaweed (8), Blazing, Lava, Lichen, Snow, (6) Moss (5), Chrome, Ice, Lotus, Mine, Mud, Quake, River, Sand, Storm and Tree (4) are some of the most versatile dragons on the list, being used in the widest variety of combos. However, there are a few things that may affect a dragons relative value to a given player:
- The dragons you have will influence the decisions you make. For example, I already have an Amethyst, which is the only combo Sonic is required for. As such, I'm in no hurry at all to get my Sonic to 20.
- Obviously you can't level up a dragon you don't have yet, but if you are missing one of the breeding dragons in the list you can look ahead and know when you need it by. Don't have a Chrome yet? No sweat, you don't need one til July!
- That said, when you start on the list will also influences your priorities. If you jump on in the month of April, that Ice or Mine might be pretty important to you, since you need the to breed a Diamond. By contrast, leveling up a Swamp or Poison is pretty low priority, since you have eight months to go before you need them. Someone that jumps into the list in November or December will probably have different priorities.
- Some dragons are REQUIRED for certain combos. Tree and Moss, for example, are required for Sakura and Clover, but aren't used for anything else on the list. But if you need that Sakura or Clover, they might be more important to you then the much more versatile Cactus or Blazing.
How To Read The Forecast
Listed in the posts below are the dragons that should be leveled up to 11+, sorted by month. Following the order I outline should reduce the overall number of level 11+ dragons you need to feed while maximizing your shot at each limited dragon. Personally, I always level up two of each parent dragon so that I can get maximum bonuses with both the Breeding Cave and the Island.
The list is pretty straightforward. The dragon we are trying to breed appears first and in bold (aka the target dragon). Clicking on the target dragons name will take you to its DragonVale Wiki entry, where you can learn more about what exactly you are trying to breed (including what its egg looks like).
Listed after the target dragons name are the dragons that form the Breeding Combo. It should be noted that it DOES NOT MATTER what order the parent dragons are selected when bred together. In addition, if a parent dragon is listed in ALL CAPS, that indicates a dragon that is REQUIRED for the combo to work. You CANNOT substitute anything for such a dragon. A non caps parent dragon is just a suggestion, albeit one chosen to reduce fail time and/or because it is a dragon that will be useful for other combos on the list. You will frequently see alternate substitutions for such parents in the body of a given description.
Following after the Breeding Combo is the date range in which the target dragon should be available. Once again, these are typically educated GUESSES. There are no guarantees here!
With that in mind, specific dates are typically a result of either an announcement by BFS or a known and precise cycle. For example, the four Seasonal Limited dragons come and go with the first and last day of their respective season, so was can be reasonably certain that these dates are accurate within a very small margin of error. The Gemstone dragons work on equally predictable cycles.
Other dates are based on a predictable event, such as a Holiday or cosmological occurrence. This is most easily seen with the Sun and Moon Limited Dragons like Equinox or Solar Eclipse. We know when the next Solar Eclipse will be and can assume the dragon will be available on that day. Most likely, it will also be available for some period before and after that day. Looking at past Solar Eclipse events, we can assume we will have a week in both directions, but that's just an educated guess. On several occasions, BFS has given us more or less time to breed a target dragon when it makes it's return.
Finally, some dragons have no dates at all, just a vague range during which they should be available. These date ranges are always based on the availability of previous years. For example, Gift was available form 12/23/12 to 1/14/13, so it's listed as Late December to Mid January. All we do is divide each month into three parts: Early (day 1-10), Mid (11-20) and Late (21+). So we are predicting Gift should return on 12/21 or later and leave by 1/20. Not very precise, but it gives players the chance to prepare. Once a given dragon is actually released, we typically update these estimates.
After each description are two more useful bits of info. The first is the Breed times. The first number listed is the base breed time, which is also the incubation time once the egg hits the nursery. The second number listed is reduced by 20%. This is the breeding time you get when using the Enchanted Breeding Cave or the Epic Breeding Sanctuary. This is a handy reference that will usually let you figuring out if you have succeed prior to actually seeing the egg.
Finally, many limited dragons are released along with thematically appropriate limited decorations. These decorations only stick around for as long as the dragon does, so if you like a given decoration you had better buy one while you have a chance. Once again, clicking on the name of a decoration takes you to its DragonVale Wiki article.
That should about cover it, so without further ado I give you... THE INDEX!
Here's a quick overview of the limited dragons that are currently available to breed, along with my favored combo and the estimated date that they will leave the market. Check the individual months below for more information.
As a reminder, any dragon listed in ALL CAPS is required for the breeding combo. A dragon in normal print is just a suggestion.
Limited/Epic Limited
Clover: MOSS + Flower (3/3 to 3/19?)
Sakura: FLOWER + TREE (3/15 to 4/1?)
Celtic: STORM + Cactus (3/10 to 3/19)
Ovalith: Bloom + Panlong (3/10 to 4/13?)
Birthstone
Diamond: ICE + MINE (4/1 to 5/1)
Quarterly Gemstone
Jet: ASH + FROSTFIRE (11/20 to 3/??)
Crystalline
Quartz: LAVA + LUMINOUS (3/15 to 4/15)
Four Seasons
Winter: Snow + Mountain (12/10 to 3/20)
Spring: Firefly + Storm (2/2 to 6/20)

Garnet: OBSIDIAN + SMOKE (1/1 to 2/1). While both these dragons are useful in other combos, this is first time either of them are required. All in all, a pretty straightforward gemstone dragon to get. Be warned, if you try for this dragon during the Bring 'Em Back event, Solar Eclipse (48h) is a possible fail. But so are Firework (6h) and Bone (10h). Breed: 31h (24h 48m) Limited Decoration: Cloisonne Runestone
Barite: DODO + HAIL (1/15 to 2/15). Middle of the month and another Crystalline Dragon is upon us! This locked combo requires a dragon that is new to the lists, but Hail will be useful next month when breeding for Amethyst. Fails are bad: Arctic (22h), Crystal/Winter (24h), Bronze/Silver/Gold Olympus (35h) Rainbow, Sun/Moon (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) Keep in mind, Barite and the Olympus dragons all have the same breeding time, so you won't know what you've got until you see the egg. In addition, if you breed this dragon during BeB you'll also have a shot at: Spectre (12h), Leap Year (14h 30m), Ghost (15h 30m), Blue Moon (29h 31m 48s), Victory (36h) Lunar Eclipse (48h) and Aurora (54h). Breed: 35h (28h) Limited Decoration: NA
Aurora: Firefly + Seaweed (1/12 to 1/29). For roughly the first seven hours of its life, this dragon was a permanent epic... but that all changed when the Fire Nation Attacked the Wizards updated the game later in the evening. Aurora can be bred with any combination that has four or more elements, so we have gone with the old reliable Firefly + Seaweed combo for it's low average fail times. You could easily substitute Scorch + Swamp or Salamander + Cactus/Ash. Fails include Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h). During BeB, this combo can also produce a Leap Year (14h 30m) and Summer (24h). Breed: 54h (43h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Love: FLOWER + Cactus (1/28 to 2/23). I recommend Flower for several combos, but this is probably the first one that actually requires it. Cactus should already be leveled up by now, but Ash, Firefly or Scorch work equally well. Breed: 5h (4h) Limited Decoration: Bed of Roses
Rose: FLOWER + Smoke (1/28 to 2/23). Flower is already leveled up by now and you probably have Smoke leveled up if you were here in January. If not, Blazing works just as well and will be needed in March. You can get a Seasonal (48h) on a fail with this combo, but that's pretty much unavoidable with any combo that produces Rose (except Rose + Rose of course, but if you have two already you're probably not reading this part of the guide...). FLOWER + Sonic will allow you to try for both Love and Rose, but it adds Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) fails to the mix. Breed: 14h (11h 12m) Limited Decoration:Rose Topiary
Moonstruck: LOVE + ROSE (1/28 to 2/23) The Moonstruck Dragon marks the first time in DV history that a limited dragon has required a limited parent to breed. And not just one limited parent, but two! This is a locked combo, adding entirely new dragons to the list and with a short breeding window. Perhaps it will stick around longer this year, since it reappeared in the middle of the Valentine's themed event. The fails can be rough, with Seasonal, Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) in the mix. Breed: 11h 54m (9h 31m 12s) Limited Decoration:Heartfelt Bridge
Thorn: Pollen + Chrome (1/28 to 2/23). Initially available during the first Gathering of Roses, Thorn returned for the second one as well. Thorn is quite an over achiever, being a limited, opposite and golden hybrid all in one. During BEB you could also try Meteor + Pollen if you still need a Zombie (20h). Breed: 7h (5h 36m) Limited Decoration: Berrywhite Bench

Amethyst: SONIC + HAIL (2/1 to 3/1). New month and if you haven't done so already, new dragons to level up. Sonic isn't needed in any other combo, though you can use him again in May and possibly later this month. We might also have a use for Hail when it comes time to breed a Blue Moon. Overall, fail times aren't too bad, other than the Sun/Moon (48h). Breed: 28h (22h 24m) Limited Decoration:Talons of Typhon
Spring: Firefly + Storm (2/2 to 6/20). It's Groundhog Day! Normally available from the first day of Spring to the last, thanks to our good friend Punxsutawney Phil the Groundhog Weather Wizard, Spring has come early this year. Storm sees a lot of action, especially next month. Firefly will be required useful later in the month and required in May, so if you haven't already leveled it up, now is the time. You can sub in Scorch for Firefly and Hail for Storm if you have them leveled up from the July and February gemstones. Fails include Sun/Moon (48h) and Blue Moon (29h 31m 48s)once Lunar New Year begins. Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Blue Moon: Firefly + Storm (2/4 to 2/11). 2/8 is the Lunar New Year, and to celebrate all the limited Moon type dragons have returned. Scorch + Hail also works here. Fails include Spring (24h) and Sun/Moon (48h). Breed: 29h 31m 48s (23h 37m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Dawn, Dusk: SUN + MOON Time: Dawn can only be bred from 7am to 7pm, like a Sun dragon. Dusk can only be bred from 7pm to 7am like a Moon Dragon (The Twilight Tower can get around these limitations)(2/4 to 2/11). This adds two new dragons to the list and has a time requirement. This really wouldn't be too bad at all, were it not for the inescapable Sun/Moon (48h) fails, with Blue Moon (29h 31m 48s) also in the mix during Lunar New Year. Breed: 20h (16h) Limited Decoration: Dawnbreak Edifice, Duskfall Edifice
Equinox: BLAZING + Rain (2/4 to 2/11). A straightforward combo and no bad fails! But, if you want to try for Equinox and Solar Eclipse at the same time, you could try BLAZING + Mud/River. Unfortunately, doing so will add Geode (23h), Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) to the mix. Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: Astrovane
Solar Eclipse: Lava + Blazing (2/4 to 2/11). Another straightforward combo with no bad fails. You could substitute Air for Blazing, which gives us reduced average fail times thanks to the possibility of breeding a Sandstorm. Lava will be useful again in October, but you could use Obsidian instead as that dragon is a better earner and is required again in January. See abve if you want to try for Equinox at the same time. Breed: 48h (38h 24m) Limited Decoration: Umbral Sculpture
Lunar Eclipse: Snow + Mountain (2/4 to 2/11). I have chosen this combo because we want Snow and Mountain for the June and September gemstones. However, you can use Air in place of Snow if you want a shot at a Sandstorm and slightly reduced average fail times. No matter what you do, you'll have to risk those Arctic (22h) and Winter (24h) fails. Breed: 48h (38h 24m) Limited Decoration: Umbral Sculpture
Midnight: DARK + MOON Time: Can only be bred from 7pm to 7am like a Moon Dragon (The Twilight Tower can get around these limitations)(2/4 to 2/11). Initially available during the Star Fall event, Midnight is now breedable. This adds a new dragon to our list and for the first time we're using a primary dragon in a locked combo. Normal fails include Crypt (17h 30m), Blue Moon (29h 31m 48s) and Moon (48h). Breed: 12h (9h 36m) Limited Decoration:Star Fall Monument
Omen: APOCALYPSE + MOON (2/4 to 2/11). Another new Epic Hybrid, this one seemingly linked to the Blood Moon on 9/28/15, which was an omen of the end times. The Apocalypse dragon is totally new to the list and unfortunatlyh is not in season during the Lunar New Year, so hopefully you have one form previous events. Moon is useful when breeding for Dusk or Dawn. Fails include: Copper (20h), Apocalypse (20h 12m) Lodestone (25h 30m), Blue Moon (29h 31m 48s), Silver (47h), Electrum (47h 30m), Sun/Moon, Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h).Breed: 27h (21h 36m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Seed: Ice + Lotus (2/6 to 2/26). The fourth dragon in the "Cycle of Plant Life" set of Seasonal dragons has arrived! A day late perhaps, but how can we complain when it has a combo with no long fails? Lotus is one of our go to dragons for Light combos lately. Ice and Iceberg are both equally viable here, with Iceberg being need in March and Ice in April. Breed: 18h (14h 24m) Limited Decoration:Giant Seed Model
Carnival: PEPPER + Obsidian (2/9 to 3/1). Mardi Gras was in March back in 2014, but is in February this year and in 2016. Pepper is new to the list, but Obsidian we should have leveled up back in January. As any earth dragon will do the trick, you could also easily substitute a Lava, Tree or Moss. Both Tree and Moss will be useful next month, so either of them would make good choices. Fails aren't bad. But since Carnival and Moss have the same Breed time, you won't know what you've got til you see the egg. Breed: 12h (9h 36m). Limited Decoration:Orlon's Pavilion
Surprise: Firefly + Seaweed (2/12 to 2/15). During the 2016 Gathering of Roses, this new Aura dragon was quite um... a surprise? Well, sorta. Really, at this point I think we all expect there to be an extra limited dragon that gets released in the middle of each new event. You can use any combo of dragon with 4 or more elements, but Firefly + Seaweed is an old reliable. Unlike most of the dragons released during the Great Dragon Fair, Surprise could be purchased with tickets or bred normally. As a result, it is not clear if it is considered an exclusive event dragon or if it will come to the regular market during the next Valentines season. Only time will tell. No matter what, Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) are possible fails. Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Apocalypse: Cactus + Mine (2/14 to 2/22). Sad that Apocalypse would return just days after the end of Lunar New Year. The Wizards mock us so. Why now? Well, one of our sources claimed that the world would end on 2/14/16. Of course, our source was a second hand account from a woman named Elaine, who heard it from an alien that she met at the Paramus Holiday Inn. And we all know aliens can't be trusted... regardless, we leveled up Mine way back in April and Cactus in August or November, but you can easily sub in Ash for Cactus. During BeB, this combo gives you a shot at the Reindeer (5h), Leap Year (14h 30m), Lycan (24), Blue Moon (29h 31m 48s) and Aurora, Faire (54h) dragons. But it's also got long regular fails in the mix: Copper (20h), Lodestone (25h 30m) Silver (47h), Electrum (47h 30m), Sun/Moon, Rainbow (48h), and Double Rainbow (60h). Honestly, at a cost of 130 gems, it might be better to just buy Apocalypse. Breed: 20h 12m (16h 10m) Limited Decoration: Pillar of Prophecy
Okenite: POLLEN + SNOW (2/15 to 3/15). The 8th crystalline draogn has a locked combo using two dragons that are already on the list. It is also the first Crystalline with no bad fails. That makes this an easy entry to write. Breed: 31h (24h 48m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Leap Year: Firefly + Seaweed (2/26 to 3/2). 2016 is a leap year, having an extra day at the end of February. So it should come as no surprise to anyone, most especially not the author of this guide, that Leap Year would return again! Clearly if you were paying attention, this was, like, super obvious. Just a hint, this will happen again in 2020, so you can probably mark your calanders so that you won't forget like some people we know... Anyhow, you can sub in Scorch for Firefly or Swamp for Seaweed if you like. Double Leap Year (29h), Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) are possible fails. Breed: 14h 30m (11h 36m) Limited Decoration:Astrolabe
Double Leap Year: Firefly + Seaweed (2/26 to 3/2). This, though? This new epic limited dragon was a complete and total surprise! Presumably, it to will also return in 2020, so you can double mark that calendar we were talking about. Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) are possible fails. Breed: 14h 30m (11h 36m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Last Edit: Feb 26, 2016 21:30:58 GMT -6 by Bloodstone
Aquamarine: ICEBERG + RIVER (3/1 to 4/1). River might be useful again in April, and this pair can also be used for breeding a Century once it comes back into season. The worst possible fails are Arctic (22h) and Geode (23h) Breed: 31h (24h 48m). Limited Decoration:Aquamarine Pendant
Clover: MOSS + Flower (3/3 to 3/19). This is the only time a Moss is required, but it can be useful again during BeB. Flower is probably leveled up by now, especially if you were playing last month. Pepper or Poison works equally well, but Flower will see action later this month. Breed: 7h (5h 36m) Limited Decoration:Sham-Rock , Clover Cottage
Solar Eclipse: Lava + Blazing (3/4 to 3/11). The first solar eclipse of the year is on 3/9. We are expecting the dragon to show up a few days before that and stick around for at least a week total. You could substitute Air for Blazing, which gives us reduced average fail times thanks to the possibility of breeding a Sandstorm. Lava will be useful again in October, but you could use Obsidian instead as that dragon is a better earner and is required again in January. Breed: 48h (38h 24m) Limited Decoration: Umbral Sculpture
Lapis: THUNDER + SANDSTORM (3/6 to 5/15). Better late than never! This Quarterly Gem Dragon has a locked combo that requires two dragons that are new to the list. And one of them is a rare Opposite Dragon! In addition, the fails are pretty harsh, including Crystal (24h) and the Bronze/Silver/Gold Olympus (35h). Breed: 32h (25h 36m) Limited Decoration: Azure Emblem
Celtic: STORM + Cactus (3/10 to 3/19). In March of 2013, the Celtic dragon was released for the first time from 3/14 to 3/18. With the holiday falling on a Monday in 2014, it may not be coming and going on the same days. And, as we can see, it showed up earlier and thankfully will be staying longer! Storm will be needed again for Bloom real soon and you probably already have Cactus leveled up at this point. If not, you can substitute Ash for it. Fails include Sun/Moon (48h). Breed: 17h (13h 36m) Limited Decoration: CloverKnot Tree
Ovalith: BLOOM + PANLONG (3/10 to 4/13?). Back in December I typed the words "Really, we should probably all hope that the Magic Egg Hunt returns in a few months.". In a round about way, I was right. We are having a Egg Hunt and Ovalith has returned. However, it's not a reward for this new event so... Ouch! Just... ouch... In addition to being super rare and super expensive, Ovalith has the worst breeding combo to date, requiring 2 limited dragons that are otherwise new to the list. Bloom will probably be returning before Ovalith leaves, but if you lack a Panlong you are still out of luck til BEB. Fails include (deep breath) Arctic (22h), Geode (23h), Crystal, Winter (24), Snowy Bronze, Silver and Gold (32h), Bronze, Silver and Gold Olympus (35h), Sun/Moon, Seasonal, Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Later in the month Spring (24h) and Solar Eclipse (48h) will also become possible fails. Still better than during BeB when it had 27+ possible fails in excess of 20 hours. Breed: 30h (24h) Limited Decoration:The Egg of Burcadia
Equinox: BLAZING + Rain (3/17 to 3/24). The Spring Equinox is 3/20, so based on past events you should get a window of about a week total to breed this one. Blazing is required and hopefully leveled up already. If you've been here since at least September, Rain should be leveled up as well. Alternately, you can use Salamander, which will be useful again in May.Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: Astrovane
Sakura: TREE + FLOWER (3/15 to 4/1). In 2013 this dragon was released to coincide with the National Cherry Blossom festival and I presumed it would be released around the same time in 2014. Instead, it was released a week early. In 2015 it was available 3/19 to 4/1. By now I'm sure you have a leveled up Flower. Tree will not be required again until December. Breed: 10h (8h) Limited Decoration:Bonsai Blossom
Lunar Eclipse: Snow + Mountain (3/20 to 3/30). The penumbral lunar eclipse is on 3/23, so we expect it will show up a few days before and stick around for about a week total. Fortunately, we should also see this dragon again in September. I have chosen this combo because we want Snow and Mountain for the June and September gemstones. However, you can use Air in place of Snow if you want a shot at a Sandstorm and slightly reduced average fail times. No matter what you do, you'll have to risk those Arctic (22h) fails. Breed: 48h (38h 24m) Limited Decoration: Umbral Sculpture
Motley: Flower + Poison. (3/28 to 4/16). The April Fool's dragon is unique in that it can be bred with any combo on this list while it's in season. However, Flower + Poison should have the lowest average fail times for a targeted breed. Breed: 13h (10h 24m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Last Edit: Mar 16, 2016 20:39:35 GMT -6 by Bloodstone
Diamond: MINE + ICE (4/1 to 5/1). Mine might be useful again in June or December. We can also make use of Ice in attempting to breed a Century. Fails can be a bit harsh, with Quicksilver (18h), Silver (47h) and Platinum (49h) in the mix. Breed: 30h (24h) Limited Decoration: Diamond Ring
Bloom: STORM + Cactus (4/2 to 4/23). Storm strikes again. By now you almost certainly have a Cactus leveled up as well, but if not Ash works just as well. Alternately, Lichen can be subbed in for Cactus/Ash and is required for the May gemstone (thanks gamenut!). Storm + Flower will give you a shot at breeding both Bloom and Spring at the same time, but also adds Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) as fails. Breed: 13h (10h 24m) Limited Decoration: Vernal Fountain
Terradiem: Rain + River (4/16 to 4/26). Earth Day is April 22nd, so Terradiem should return around that time. Any combo of Earth, Air and Water will do the trick here, but we previously leveled River up for the March gemstone and we will need to level up Rain by September. Air + River reduces the average fail time due to the chance for Sandstorm, but you'll need to level up an additional dragon for the optimal chance of success. Geode (23h) is the worst possible fail. Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Arbor: FOREST + TREE (4/23 to 5/7). Arbor day is on 4/25 and we have a new dragon to celebrate with. We should have Tree leveled up from March, but Forest is a new addition to the list. Thankfully, no really bad fails for this one. Breed: 10h (8h) Limited Decoration: Dracaena Tree
Last Edit: May 4, 2015 15:37:45 GMT -6 by Bloodstone
Emerald: CRYSTAL + LICHEN (5/1 to 6/1). We will need a Crystal again for the August gemstone and Lichen might prove useful again by December. This one has some pretty brutal fail times too, since it includes Arctic (22h), Crystal (24h), Sun/Moon, Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 31h (24h 48m) Limited Decoration: Emerald Triquetra
Bouquet: FLOWER + Seaweed (5/5 to 5/19). Mother's Day is May 11th, so Bouquet should return by then. Flower is required and is hopefully already leveled up. I selected Seaweed because we will need it for next months gemstone, but you could get the same results with Swamp (required in December) or Salamander (required for Jade). Water or Coral will also work in a pinch. Unfortunately, Bouquet has the same breed time as Swamp, so you won't know what you've got until you see the egg. Breed: 9h (7h 12m) Limited Decoration:Family Imprint
Sprout: Sand + River (5/7 to 5/26). This brand new dragon is probably here for Mother's Day, but might also represent "growing season". If the latter, then perhaps this indicates a new series of Seasonal type dragons and will hopefully stick around for a while. Only time will tell...and alas, time has told us that it is NOT here for months at a time! As for the combo, any combination of Light, Earth and Water can work. Sand was selected since it's useful again in December, but Mud can easily be substituted for River if need be. Other than Geode (23h), this one has relatively low fail times. Breed: 36h (28h 48m) Limited Decoration:The Stocking Beans
Jade: PLASMA + SALAMANDER (5/15 - 9/4). The first in a new set of Gemstone Dragons being released quarterly. Jade requires two dragons that are new to the list, one of which is an opposite dragon. This marked the first time any limited dragon has required an opposite dragon. On the plus side, this combo has fairly low fail times, at least until Summer (24h) becomes available. Breed: 30h 26m 15s (24h 21m) Limited Decoration: Jadeite Oasis
Blue Moon: Scorch + Storm (5/20 to 5/22). The seasonal Blue Moon on 5/21, so we expect Blue Moon to show up on 5/20 and stick around for about 72 hours. But in 2015, it actually arrived on 7/28 and lasted until 8/25! Unheard of! Maybe it will repeat like that this year? Only time will tell. Firefly + Hail also works here. Unfortunately, fails might include Sun/Moon (48h). Breed: 29h 31m 48s (23h 37m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Butterfly: FIREFLY + Blazing (5/26 to 6/18). Firefly is required and is also useful again in June and November. I chose Blazing because it’s good for several upcoming combos and is required for both the Solstice and Equinox. You could get the same results with Smoke, Sonic or Thunder. Of note, Thunder is the highest earner of the three. Thunder is an even better earner than Sonic, but isn't required again until Lapis returns. Breed: 12h (9h 36m) Limited Decoration: Butterfly Pavilion
Elysium: DREAM + GOLD OLYMPUS (5/28 to 6/4). Well, they've finally done it. We knew it was only a matter of time. Elysium is the first "epic hybrid" to be released, requiring two Epic Parents to breed together. This locked combo adds two new dragons to the list. The Wizards have once again outdone themselves, requiring a combo with absolutely brutal fails that are even worse than Ovalith! Fails include (drum roll please!) Copper (20h), Hypnotic (21h 30m), Arctic, Scoria (22h), Geode (23h), Crystal, Forge, Spring (24h), Loadstone (25h 30m), Snowy Bronze/Silver/Gold (32h), Cyclops (33h), Bronze/Silver/Gold Olympus (35h), Ragnarok (39h 27m), Bronze (46h), Silver (47h), Electrum (47h 30m), Gold, Sun/Moon, Seasonal, Rainbow (48h), Platimun (49h), Dream (50h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 48h (38h 24m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Last Edit: Jan 10, 2016 14:28:03 GMT -6 by Bloodstone
Pearl: SNOW + SEAWEED (6/1 to 7/1). Well, hopefully we leveled our Snow already from the Lunar Eclipse and Seaweed from the Bouquet last month. Overall fail times aren't bad at all, except for Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 30h (24h) Limited Decoration: La Reine De Pearls
Kite: Chrome + Copper (6/9 to 6/23). Let's go fly a kite! Conveniently, the second Father's Day dragon can be bred with parents that will be useful next month. However, you could also use Meteor + Sonic/Thunder. Fails aren't too bad on average, but do include Copper (20h) and Electrum (47h 30m). Copper + Pollen or Cactus/Ash + Chrome/Meteor have slightly lower average fail times, but add Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) fails to the mix. Breed: 22h (17h 36m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Solstice: BLAZING + Lava (6/16 to 6/30). The Summer Solstice is on 6/20 this year, so again we are predicting the dragons arrival a few days before and departure a few days later. Blazing is required, but you can switch out Lava for Obsidian. Breed: 23h 30m (18h 48m) Limited Decoration:Sun Stones
Bearded: MOUNTAIN + Mine (6/16 to 6/30). Father's day is June 19th this year, so Bearded should return by then. If you’ve been following along since April, you should have both of Mountain and Mine leveled up by now. Arctic, Scoria (22h), Bronze (46h) and Silver (47h) are in the mix, so fails can be rough. Breed: 15h (12h) Limited Decoration: Rustic Cave
Delirium: DREAM + HYPNOTIC (6/18 to 7/7). Another Epic Hybrid, though this locked combo only requires a single Epic parent. Both dragons are new to the list and the fails are once again horrible! Even worse than Elysium! Fails include Copper (20h), Hypnotic (21h 30m), Arctic, Kite, Scoria (22h), Geode (23h), Crystal, Forge, Spring/Summer (24h), Loadstone (25h 30m), Snowy Bronze/Silver/Gold (32h), Cyclops (33h), Bronze/Silver/Gold Olympus (35h), Ragnarok (39h 27m), Bronze (46h), Silver (47h), Electrum (47h 30m), Gold, Sun/Moon, Seasonal, Rainbow (48h), Platinum (49h), Dream (50h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Summer: Firefly + Salamander (6/20 to 9/23). The first day of summer is 6/20 so Spring is out and a new dragon has appeared. If you've been here since May, Salamander is leveled up from Jade and Firefly from Butterfly. However, Scorch is useful for next months Gemstone, so you can easily sub it in for Firefly. You can also get Summer as a fail while trying for Jade or Delirium. Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A (while initially released together on Android, the Swimming Hole was not a limited decoration for Summer)
Firework: Sonic + Firefly (6/23 to 7/15). This dragon should become available before Independence Day, 7/4, and should stick around for a good chunk of July. For as long as it sticks around in July, Firework is also be a potential fail for that month's Gemstone. An alternate combo would be Thunder + Scorch, but any combination that includes Air and Fire can do the trick. It's also a possible fail while trying for Delirium. Breed: 6h (4h 48m) Limited Decoration: Firework Cauldron
Last Edit: Jan 10, 2016 14:23:10 GMT -6 by Bloodstone
Ruby: CHROME + SCORCH (7/1 to 8/1) Two new dragons added to the list, but fortunately we can make use of Chrome again later this month. Also some harsh fail times with Copper (20h), Forge (24h), Electrum (47h 30m) Gold, Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h). On the plus side, Firework is also a fail for most of July if you don't already have one. Breed: 31h (24h 48m) Limited Decoration: Corundum Crystal
Liberty: COPPER + Chrome (7/2 to 7/16) Copper is new to the list, but Chrome should be leveled up from this months Gem Dragon. If your Chrome dragons are still occupied, COPPER + Sonic or COPPER + Meteor will give you the same results. Thunder or Air would also do in a pinch, but both of these would require leveling up additional dragons. Fails include Copper (20h) and Electrum (47h 30m). Breed: 29h 49m (23h 51m 12s) Limited Decoration: Eternal Flame
Jasper: HYPNOTIC + MALACHITE (7/15 to 8/14) Jasper represents the first of what we can only assume will be a new set of gem dragons, known as Crystal Dragons. This locked combo adds a new dragon to our lists, but Hypnotic at least has seen some use just last month. Fails are't too bad, but include Hypnotic (21h 30m), Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 35h (28h) Limited Decoration: N/A
Prism: Ice + Lotus (7/25 to 8/12) Prism can be bred with any combination that includes Light and Water. This means leveling up a new Light hybrid, and I have chosen Lotus. Shimmer or Nectar would work just as well. Adding Ice to the mix lets us reuse a dragon that we have already leveled up and also reduces the average fail time thanks to the addition of the cold element. Iceberg could be easily subbed for Ice. Breed: 42h (33h 36m) Limited Decoration:Lunatric Prism
Last Edit: Jan 10, 2016 14:25:00 GMT -6 by Bloodstone
Peridot: CACTUS + CRYSTAL (8/1 to 9/1). We probably already have Crystal leveled up from May and Cactus will prove useful again in November and December. Fail times aren't too bad, other than the Crystals (24h) Breed: 31h (24h 48m) Limited Decoration: Olivine Obelisk
Leaf: Lotus + Seaweed (8/4 to 8/18). First Sprout and now Leaf... Could we be seeing the emergence of a new set of Seasonal Dragons? We can re-use the Lotus, which we just added to the list last month. You can also easily sub in Swamp for Seaweed if you like. Prism (42h) is a possible fail while they are both in season. Breed: 37h (29h 36m) Limited Decoration:Twilight Vines
Tidal: ABYSS + QUAKE (8/7 to 8/10). Well, this new four element dragon limited dragon was a surprise! Fortunately, both dragons in this locked combo are already on our list and Quake will even be used later in the month. Unlike most of the dragons released during the Great Dragon Fair, Tidal could be purchased with tickets or bred normally. As a result, it is not clear if it is considered an exclusive event dragon or if it will return next summer. Only time will tell. Fails are rough and include Ooze (18h 30m), Geode (23h), Crystal (24h), Sun/Moon, Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) in the mix. Breed: 30h (24h) Limited Decoration: N/A
Tourmaline: CRYSTAL + ELECTRUM (8/14 to 9/15). The second Crystalline Dragon and it's arrival time seems to confirm my suspicion that we can expect them to show up around the middle of each month and stick around for a like amount of time. Crystal should be leveled up already from Peridot this month, but Electrum is new to the list. There aren't a huge number of fails in the combo, but the majority of them are brutally long: Copper (20h), Scoria (22h), Crystal (24h), Lodestone 25h (30m), Bronze (46h) and Electrum (47h 30m). (Breed: 35h (28h) Limited Decoration: N/A
Sunstruck: HEAT + MIRAGE (8/25 to 9/8). A new epic limited dragon with two new parents to add to our list. Sunstruck appears to be an analog to Moonstruck, so we are assuming that it will only stick around for a few days. Fortunately the few fails this combo can produce aren't bad at all. Breed: 32h (25h 36m) Limited Decoration:The Sun Kissed Sands
Solar Eclipse: Lava + Blazing (8/30 to 9/8). The annular solar eclipse is 9/1 so this dragon should be available a few days beforehand and will probably stick around for a while afterwards. You should definitely have Lava leveled up at this point since it's required for the October gemstone. Again, you can substitute Smoke or Air for Blazing. Breed: 48h (38h 24m) Limited Decoration: Umbral Sculpture
Last Edit: Jan 10, 2016 14:31:47 GMT -6 by Bloodstone
Sapphire: MOUNTAIN + RAIN (9/1 to 10/1). See, I told ya' that Mountain would be required eventually. Rain should be leveled up from back in April, but if not do so now. We can make use of both dragons again later this month. Fails include Arctic (22h), Geode (23h), Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 30h (24h) Limited Decoration:Star Sapphire of Trigon
Amber: QUAKE + EVERGREEN (9/4 to 11/20). The second dragon in the Quarterly Gemstone Dragon set. Amber requires Evergreen, which we can make use of again in December, and Quake, which is totally new to the list. Jade had an unusually long breeding window in 2015, pushing Amber back all the way to predicted September return! Not sure if this will be a permanent change, nor do we know if Amber will now have a shorter breeding window to compensate. Fail times are quite brutal, with Arctic (22h), Crystal (24h), Sun/Moon, Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) in the mix. Breed: 30h 26m 15s (24h 21m) Limited Decoration:Tear of the Cataclysm
Lunar Eclipse: Snow + Mountain (9/14 to 9/21). Well, if you missed it before, we have another Penumbral Eclipse on 9/16. Snow and Mountain should be leveled up already from the June and September gemstones. Again, you can substitute Air for Snow to reduce average breeding time, but Arctic (22h) fails are always in the mix. Breed: 48h (38h 24m) Limited Decoration: Umbral Sculpture
Bismuth: FORGE + GLASS (9/15 to 10/14). The third Crystalline Dragon, Bismuth uses a locked combo with two dragons that are completely new to the list. Fails are rough and include Scoria (22h), Forge (24h), Bronze (46h), Rainbow, Gold (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) Breed: 34h 30m (27h 36m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Muse: DAYDREAM + HYDRA (9/18 to 9/21). Another Epic hybrid, and once again it requires the use of a Dream type and an Olympus type dragon to breed. Both dragons in this locked combo are new to the list. Much like Tidal, Muse was released during the Great Dragon Fair and could be purchased with tickets or bred normally. So it's not clear if it is considered an exclusive event dragon or if it will return again next summer. Fails are quite brutal and include Ooze (18h 30m), Gamma (19h), Hypnotic (21h 30m), Geode (23h), Crystal (24h), Daydream (29h), Hydra (34h), Bronze/Silver/Gold Olympus (35h), Rainbow (48h), Dream (50h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 36h (28h 48m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Equinox: BLAZING + Rain (9/20 to 9/27). The Autumnal Equinox is 9/22, so based on past events you should get a window of about a week to breed this one. Blazing is required and presumably already leveled up from previous months and we should have just leveled up our Rain while trying for this months gemstone. If Rain is still busy, Salamander will do just as well. Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: Astrovane
Autumn: Blazing + Snow (9/22 to 12/22). The first day of Autumn is 9/22 so Summer is out and a new dragon has appeared. Blazing should be leveled up already and Snow will be useful next month. You can sub in Smoke for Blazing if you like. Unfortunately, you must contend with Snowy Bronze, Snowy Silver and Snowy Gold (32h) fails with any possible combo. During the period in which they are both available, you can try for Autumn and Equinox simultaneously by using BLAZING + Ice/Iceberg, however this will add Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) fails to the mix. Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: NA
Last Edit: Jan 10, 2016 14:58:15 GMT -6 by Bloodstone
Opal: LAVA + MUD (10/1 to 11/1). Well, if you followed the guide up to this point, you already have Lava right where you need him. Mud is new, but we might have use for him in December. Farly low fail times, other than Geode (23h). Breed: 31h (24h 48m) Limited Decoration: Miroid Monument
Bone: Lava + Obsidian (10/8 to 11/9). Once Bone returns to the market, it becomes a possible fail while trying for Opal. If that doesn't work out for ya' this combo might do the trick. You obviously have the Lava leveled up by now for this months gemstone. If you haven't already leveled up Obsidian, you will need him in the coming months. Annoyingly, Bone and Lava share the same breeding time. Another very good combo would be Lava/Obsidian + Flower/Poison. This combo offers lower average fail times, but you might occasionally get stuck with a Moss or Tree. Breed: 10h (8h) Limited Decoration: Jack-O-Lantern
Sanguinite: LODESTONE + MOUNTAIN (10/14 to 11/16). The fourth Crystalline Dragon showed up a day before aniticipated, but we still expect it to stickaround until the 14th or 15th of next month. Lodestone is new to the list, but Mountain should have long since been leveled up. Fails are just brutal and include Copper (20h), Arctic, Scoria (22h), Crystal (24h), Lodestone (25h 30m), Bronze (46h), Silver (47h), Electrum (47h 30m), Sun/Moon, Rainbow (48) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 36h (28h 48m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Nosferatu: Mountain + Lava (10/14 to 11/16). Time: Can only be bred from 7pm to 7am (The Twilight Tower can get around this limitation). Outside of the time requirement, Nosferatu isn't a particularly bad dragon to breed for. We're able to use two mainstay dragons, though if those are busy elsewhere you could try Glacier + Obsidian or Frostfire + Mountain/Glacier/Lava/Obsidian. Arctic (22h) is the only bad fail, while Bone (10h) and Ghost (15h 30m) are both possible fails during their overlapping periods of availability. Flower/Poison/Pepper + Mountain/Glacier has even lower average fail times, but this runs the risk of Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) as well. Breed: 13h (10h 24m) Limited Decoration: Whitbee's Lantern
Ghost: Mountain + Mud (10/15 to 11/9). Mountain and Mud are both useful this month, so this makes for an easy combo. Arctic (22h) and Geode (23h) are the worst possible fails while working on Ghost. There should also be a lengthy period of time where Ghost, Bone and Nosferatu are all available, so you can try to triple up using and of the Nosferatu combinations. Breed: 15h 30m (12h 24m) Limited Decoration: Tower Hollow
Zombie: POLLEN + METEOR (10/23 to 11/9). A brand new Halloween dragon, and this time it's Epic! Zombie Apocalypse! This one has a locked combo with two entirely new dragons, but on the plus side the fails aren't too bad. Breed: 20h (16h) Limited Decoration:Witch Hut ??
Nightmare: ABYSS + HOWL (10/27 to 11/9) This new epic limited dragon has a locked combo with two dragons that are totally new to the list. Fortunately, there are no long fails in the mix. Breed: 36h 28m 33s (29h 10m 50s) Limited Decoration: Pool of Screams
Pharaoh: CRYPT + SUN (10/30 to 11/2). This new epic limited dragon has a locked combo, but fortunately Sun is already on our lists. Unlike most of the new dragons released during Whitbee's Candy Bash '15, Pharaoh could be purchased with candy or bred normally. As a result, it's not clear if it is considered an exclusive event dragon or if it will return for normal breeding next Halloween, like Nosferatu. Only time will tell. Overall, fails aren't too bad other than Crypt (17h 30m) and Sun/Moon (48h). Breed: 30h (24h) Limited Decoration: N/A
NOTE: On 10/3/13, the Witch Hut was released alongside the Bone Dragon, as had been the case in previous years. However, the Jack-O-Lantern did not appear in the market until 10/8/13, showing up alongside the Ghost Dragon. On 10/14, the Tower Hollow, previous associated with the Ghost Dragon, returned with the release of the new Zombie Dragon.
NOTE: On 10/9/14, the Jack-O-Lantern was released alongside the Bone Dragon instead of the With Hut. On 10/14/14 the Tower Hollow was release along with the Ghost Dragon instead of the Witch Hut. The Zombie Dragon returned on 10/21/14, but the Witch Hut did not show up in the market until 10/24.
NOTE: On 10/8/15, the Bone Dragon returned to the market without any associated decorations. All previous regular Halloween decorations returned on 10/15 (not including decorations from Whitbee's Candy Bash 2014)
Last Edit: Jan 10, 2016 15:02:53 GMT -6 by Bloodstone
Topaz: CACTUS + FIREFLY (11/1 to 12/1). Well, if you've been following along since may you already have both of these dragon leveled up. And if not, you will probably be using these guys again in December. Nice short fail times on this gemstone. November is looking to be a relaxing month, which is good considering the madness that December will probably bring. Breed: 30h (24h) Limited Decoration: Topaz Portal
Berry: Lotus + Salamander (11/5 to 11/24). Berry is the third in what has clearly become a new set of Limited Seasonal Dragons, seemingly linked to the cycle of plant life. Lotus should be leveled up from August and Salamander will be needed by May. Alternately, you could try Salamander + Heat or Lotus + Heat and get the same results. Fail times for any of these combos are rather short. You could try Lotus + Flower/Poison or Heat + Swamp/Seaweed to get even lower average fail times, but doing so runs the risk of Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) fails as well. Breed: 16h (12h 48m) Limited Decoration: Berry Patch
Mesolite: GLASS + SULFUR (11/16 to 12/15). The fifth Crystalline Dragon showed up two days later than anticipated but we still expect it to stick around until the 15th of next month (give or take a day or two). Glass may already be leveled up from our Bismuth attempts, but Sulfur is new to the list. Fails are rough and include Scoria (22h), Forge (24h), Bronze (46h), Gold, Rainbow (48) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 31h (24h 48m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Gourd: PEPPER + ROOT (11/19 to 12/1) What's this? At long last we have a Thanksgiving themed dragon! This one may actually stick around through the whole holiday season, but for now we're banking on it leaving shortly after Thanksgiving. Fortunately, while it has a locked combo, both dragons are already on our list. Overall fail times aren't too bad, though this combo can produce Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 30h 51m 56s (24h 41m 12s) Limited Decoration: N/A
Jet: ASH + FROSTFIRE (11/20 to 3/6) Well that was unexpected! Our new Quarterly Gemstone Dragon not only has a locked combo, but it requires two dragons that are totally new to the list. And one of them is a rare Opposite Dragon! Previously, this dragon stuck around for almost a month longer than any other Quarterly Gemstone, not leaving until 3/6. Will it leave "on time" or will it stick around longer like last time? Most of the regular fails aren't too bad, but this combo can also produce Sun/Moon, Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 30h (24h) Limited Decoration: Horns of Sorec
Harvest: Mud + Seaweed (11/25 to 12/1) Not one but two new dragons for Thanksgiving? Amazing! Unlocked combos gives us a ton of options, including River + Swamp or Moss/Forest/Tree + River/Mud/Seaweed/Swamp. The only bad fail is Geode (23h). You can even try for Harvest and Feast together with something like Lotus + Tree or Glass + Seaweed, but this will add Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) fails to the mix. Breed: 18h (14h 24m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Feast: Tree + Sand (11/25 to 12/1) The second new Thanksgiving dragon also has an unlocked combo. You can sub in Forest or Moss for Tree or Glass for Sand. Even beetter, these combos have no truly awful fails. While they are both available, you can try for Feast and Harvest simultaneously with the above mentioned combos or anything with all four elements, like Sand + Swamp. Doing so will add Geode (23h), Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h) fails to the mix though. Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Last Edit: Nov 30, 2015 7:49:11 GMT -6 by Bloodstone
Turquoise: POISON + SWAMP (12/1 to 1/19). You may have already leveled up Poison back in September, but Swamp is new. Again, this combo has some nice short fail times. Both of these dragons might prove useful this month and that combo also has slightly lower average fail times. Breed: 31h (24h 48m) Limited Decoration: Cryptocrystalline Talisman
Mistletoe: TREE + LICHEN (12/1 to 1/19). New dragon, locked combo! We haven't used Lichen since May, but it will be useful again later this month. If you don't have Tree leveled up already, you'll need it again in March. Arctic (22h) is a possible fail. Breed: 8h (6h 24m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Reindeer: Lichen + Evergreen (12/1 to 1/19). Clearly you should have Lichen leveled up at this point. Same is true of Evergreen if you've been trying for Amber. However, Reindeer is also a possible fail for Mistletoe when they are both in season. Or you might be able to double up with Gift later in the month as well. Breed: 5h (4h) Limited Decoration: N/A
Solstice: BLAZING + Lava (12/10 to 1/19). The Winter Solstice is on 12/21, so we were predicting the dragons arrival a week before and departure a week later. Blazing is required, but as before you can switch out Lava for Obsidian. Or you could use a Bone dragon if you got it a few months back! Breed: 23h 30m (18h 48m) Limited Decoration:Sun Stones
Winter: Snow + Mountain (12/10 to 3/20). The first day of Winter is 12/22 so Autumn is "out" and a new dragon has appeared. Of course, Autumn will still be available til Bring 'Em Back is over and Winter will actually arrive when BeB starts. Winter can be bred with any combination of Air, Cold and Earth. Air + Mountain has shorter average fail times due to the chance of Sandstorm, but you would need to level up an extra dragon. If you breed for Winter during BeB, your fails may also include Ghost (15h) and Lunar Eclipse (48h). Otherwise, the worst possible fail it Arctic (22h). Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Pyrite: IRON + THUNDER (12/15 to 1/19). New Crystalline, new dragon added to the list. At least Thunder can be used again for Lapis. Fails are fairly awful and include Copper (20h), Scoria (22h), Crystal (24h), Lodestone (25h 30m), Bronze/Silver/Gold Olympus (35h), Bronze (46h), Electrum (47h 30m) Rainbow (48h) and Double Rainbow (60h). During BeB, this combo can also produce Leap Year (14h 30m), Kite (22h) and Aurora (54h). Breed: 36h (28h 48m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Holly: EVERGREEN + MISTLETOE (12/18 to 12/21). Evergreen is already on our list, but Mistletoe is not only new but a limited dragon to boot. Unlike most of the dragons released during the Winter Frostival, Holly could be purchased with iceberries or bred normally. As a result, it's not clear if it is considered an exclusive event dragon or if it will return sometime next winter (during BeB or otherwise). It was not breedable during BeB after it left the Snowfall Spire. Fails aren't bad, other than Arctic (22h). During BEB it's also possible to breed Reindeer (5h), Spectre (12h) and Ghost (15h 30m). Breed: 30h (24h) Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Gift: Flower + Lichen (12/10 to 1/19). In previous years, we did not have to breed this dragon at all. It was free to purchase from 12/23 til 12/25 during Christmas 2012 and was gifted to players in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, we got a different dragon for Christmas. So if you don't have on you will need to breed one. Poison can be subbed in for Flower, since you obviously have it from the December gemstone. Technically, you don't need Flower til February, but if you've been following the guide for a while you almost certainly have it leveled up by now. You can also get Reindeer (5h) or Regift (12h) as a fail while trying for Gift during the lengthy period when they are all in season. Breed: 12h 25m (9h 56m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Regift: Flower + Lichen (12/26 to 1/19) The Regift dragon was given to players for free on 12/24, but became available to breed normally on 12/16. We can use the same combo as Gift, which means you can get Gift (12h 25m) or Reindeer (5h) as a fail while they are all in season. Breed: 12h (9h 36m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Neoteric: LUMINOUS + SPARK (12/31 to 1/12?) Happy New Year! This locked combo adds two new dragons to our list. Fails include Bramble (18h), Gamma (19h), Rainbow (48h), Dream (50h) and Double Rainbow (60h). During BEB, you can add Darkling (14h), Leap Year (14h 430m), Light/Dark Rift (48h) and Aurora (54h) to the possible fails. Breed: 31h (24h 48m) Limited Decoration: N/A
And now, things get complicated...
Bring 'em Back event
The Bring 'em Back 2012 event unlocked every limited decoration and dragon in the game, including all the Gemstone dragons that had been released up until that point. It ran from December 18th to January 14th. In fact, I joined the game just a few short days after it ended
It returned again on 12/13/13. Even after the addition of the Collection Comeback mini events, BeB returned virtually unchanged on 12/18/14. At this point, it seems like a safe bet that it will be back again in 2015!
And to our surprise, BEB started on 12/10/15 this year. Earlier than ever! I'm not going to re-list everything here. Suffice to say, if it's anywhere in this guide it will be available during this event, albeit with the possibility of additional fails in the mix. Listed below are the limited dragons that aren't currently available and have no predictable return date.
Be aware, Motley (13h) is a possible fail for ANY combo during BEB!
Century: Ice + River. Lots of possible combos here. You can use Mountain/Glacier + Ice/Iceberg/Mud/River. However, f you still need an Aquamarine, use Iceberg + River for a shot at both. Unfortunately, Glacier has the same breed time as Century so you won't know for sure what you've got until you see the egg. Arctic (22h) and Geode (23h) are the worst possible fails. Spectre (12h) and Ghost (15h 30m) is also possible fails during Bring Em Back. Breed: 10h (8h) Limited Decoration: N/A
Bicentennial: Firefly + Blazing. The Bicentennial dragon marks the 200th dragon released. Quite the milestone for the Wizards! Both Firefly and Blazing should be leveled up from previous combos. However, if Firefly is, you can easily sub in Scorch, Sonic or Thunder. And Smoke can be subbed in for Blazing if need be. Firework (6h) and Butterfly (12h) are possible fails during BeB. Breed: 20h (16h) Limited Decoration: N/A
Panlong: Smoke + Mud. Back in October, I told you we might have a use for Mud in December and here it is. Of course, you could substitute River for Mud. You'll need River in March anyhow. I would not recommend using Blazing, as it will add Equinox (24h) and Solstice (23h 30m) to the mix (unless you need those dragons, of course). Regardless of which way you go, you'll also have a chance at several other limited dragons: Firework (6h), Bone (10h), Coal (12h) and Leap Year (14h 30m), but that also includes several long fails: Geode (23h), Terradiem (24h) Solar Eclipse, Rainbow (48h), Aurora (54h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 36h (28h 48m) Limited Decoration: Twisted Bamboo , Paper Lantern , Pagoda
Victory: Snow + Hail. With no Olympics until 2016 and no World Cup until 2018, it's not clear when this dragon might return outside of Bring Em Back. There was a hope that it would show up in June for the Women's World Cup, but it did not. Regardless, this epic limited dragon can be bred with any combination that includes Air, Cold and Lightning. Snow + Storm could work just as well here. Fails aren't too awful and include Blue Moon (29h 31m 48s), Sun and Moon (48h). If need be, you can also double up on Victory and Amethyst by using SONIC + HAIL. Breed: 36h (28h 48m) Limited Decoration:Chalice of the Vale
Paper: Flower + Mountain. Happy One Year Anniversary! Sorta... Paper was replaced by Cotton last year, instead of returning in September during the actual DV Anniversary. If you've been following along since September, you also already have Mountain. You could also use Poison instead of Flower if you like, as we probably have both of them leveled up this month. Regardless, this combo gives you a chance at Reindeer (5h), Bone (10h), Coal, Spectre, Trick (12h), Gift (12h 25m), Nosferatu (13h, only from 7pm to 7am), Leap Year (14h 30m), OrTreat (15h) and Ghost (15h 30m). But it's also got Arctic (22h), Rainbow (48h), Aurora (54h) and Double Rainbow (60h) fails in the mix. Breed: 12h (9h 36m) Limited Decoration:Anniversary Statue
Cotton: Flower + Quake. Happy 2nd Anniversary... sorta! Cotton should be replaced by a new dragon this year, so you'll need to breed one during BeB. Quake should have been leveled up from our Amber efforts and if you've been following along since March/April, you've already got Flower leveled up as well. If not, you can easily sub in Poison for Flower, especially since Poison is required in December. Flower will be useful again by February though. During BEB the Flower combo gives you a chance at Love (5h), Bone (10h), Coal, Trick (12h), Leap Year (14h 30m), OrTreat (15h). Long Fails include Crystal Garland (24h), Rainbow (48h), Aurora (54h) and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration:2nd Anniversary Statue
Leathery: Mountain + Firefly. I assumed that if they followed the pattern of previous years, Leather would be the 3 year anniversary dragon. I was obviously very, very close! Glacier can be subbed in for Mountain or you can use Scorch in place of Firefly. You could also try Lava/Obsidian + Storm/Hail. All will work just as well. Unfortunately, there's no way around the long potential fails with Arctic (23h), Crystal (24h), Sun/Moon, Rainbow (48h), Aurora (54h) and Double Rainbow (60h) all in the mix. During BeB you've also got a shot at Bone (10h), Coal, Spectre, (12h). Nosferatu (13h, only from 7pm to 7am), Leap Year (14h 30m), Ghost (15h 30m), Spring (24h) and Blue Moon (29h 31m 48s) and Aurora (54h). Breed: 36h (28h 48m) Limited Decoration:3rd Anniversary Statue
Garland: Flower + Quake. Virtually all my predictions about this dragon were wrong! I went with old reliable Flower and Quake, which should be leveled from our hunt for Amber. Fortunately, there are many combos that can work here: Poison/Pepper + Crystal, Cactus/Ash + Lava/Obsidian, Tree/Moss/Forest + Firefly/Scorch. Fails include Crystal (24h), Rainbow (48h and Double Rainbow (60h). During BeB you've also got a shot at Love (5h), Bone (10h), Trick, Coal (12h), Leap Year (14h 30m), Ortreat (15h), Cotton (24h) and Aurora (54h) Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration:4th Anniversary Statue
Light Rift, Dark Rift: Sand + Root. At last, the rift dragons can be bred normally! Any combination that includes both Dark and Light elements can work, but mixing in the Earth element should give us shorter average fail times. Cave + Glass works just as well here. Breed: 48h (38h 24m) Incubation Time: 30s Limited Decoration: N/A
Coal: Flower + Moss. Initially available only as a gift during the 2014 Christmas season, Coal is breedable during BeB. During BEB this combo gives you a shot at Clover (7h), Bone (10h), Trick (12) and OrTreat (15h). You could try Tree + Flower instead for a shot at Sakura (10h) instead of Clover. Breed: 12h (9h 36m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Midday: SUN + DUSK Time: Can only be bred from 7am to 7pm like a Sun Dragon (The Twilight Tower can get around these limitations). Initially available during the Great Dragon Faire, Midday is now breedable. This locked combo includes an Epic Limited dragon that is new to our list, so you may need to breed for Dusk before trying for Midday. Fails during BEB include Dusk (20h) and Blue Moon (29h 31m 48s) And of course Sun (48h) as a normal fail. Breed: 16h (12h 48m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Loot: Flower + GOLD. Another refugee from the Great Dragon Faire! This partially locked combo includes an Epic dragon that is new to our list. You can sub in Pepper, Poison or Malachite in place of Flower and get the same results. Regular fails include Forge (24h) and Gold (48h). During BeB Thorn (7h) is also a possible fail. Breed: 35h (28h) Limited Decoration: N/A
Darkling: Firefly + Dark. Previously a Great Dragon Faire exclusive, Darkling makes a return for BEB. There are no horrible fails in this combo, though since Wraith and Darkling have the same breed time, you won't know what you have until you see the egg. Breed: 14h (11h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Faire: Cactus + Mine. Yep, we're using the same combo as Apocalypse (20h 12m), so this combo also gives you a shot at Reindeer (5h), Thorn (7h), Lycan (12), Leap Year (14h 30m), Blue Moon (29h 31m 48s) and Aurora (54h) dragons. Once again, it's got long fails in the mix: Copper (20h), Lodestone (25h 30m) Silver (47h), Electrum (47h 30m), Sun/Moon, Rainbow (48h), and Double Rainbow (60h). Breed: 54h (43h 12m) Limited Decoration:
Trick: Flower + Moss. Yes, this is the same combo as Coal (12h), which means you have a shot at Clover (7h), Bone (10h) and OrTreat (15h). You could try Tree + Flower for a shot at Sakura (10h) instead of Clover. Breed: 12h (9h 36m) Limited Decoration: N/A
OrTreat: Flower + Moss.... seeing a pattern here? Check out Reread the Trick entry if not and get back to me... Breed: 15h (12h) Limited Decoration: N/A
Spectre: Lichen + Moss. While you could use something like Mountain + Glacier, putting the plant element into the combo actually results in lower average fail times. It also gives you a shot at Clover (7h). If you would rather try for Mistletoe (8h), you can use Lichen + Tree instead. Regardless, this combo will give you a chance at Reindeer (5h) and Ghost (15h 30m) as well. Alas, there is always a risk of Arctic (22h) fails. Breed: 12h (9h 36m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Lycan: Cactus + Hail. Our furry friend of multiple forms has returned! During BEB, this combo will give you a shot at Reindeer (5h) and Blue Moon (29h 31m 48s). You could try Cactus + Storm if you need a Bloom (13h) or Celtic (17h). But, noo matter what you do, there is always the risk of Sun/Moon (48h) fails. Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Regift: Flower + Lichen. This dragon was gifted to players in 2015 instead of the Gift Dragon. Poison can be subbed in for Flower, since you obviously have it from the December gemstone. You can also get Reindeer (5h) or Gift (12h 25m) as a fail while trying for Regift during the lengthy period when they are all in season. Breed: 12h (9h 36m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Ornamental: Nothing to see here. Move along. Breed: 18h (14h 24m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Lace: Nothing to see here. Move along. Breed: 31h (24h 48m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Dazzling: Nothing to see here. Move along. Breed: 55h (44h) Limited Decoration: N/A
Flicker: Nothing to see here. Move along. Breed: 25h (20h) Limited Decoration: N/A
Verglace: Nothing to see here. Move along. Breed: 25h (20h) Limited Decoration: N/A
Serenity: Nothing to see here. Move along. Breed: 18h (14h 24m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Ire: Nothing to see here. Move along. Breed: 12h (9h 36m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Melancholy: Nothing to see here. Move along. Breed: 24h (19h 12m) Limited Decoration: N/A
Delight: Nothing to see here. Move along. Breed: 36h (28h 48m) Limited Decoration: N/A
