This thread will be multi-part guide to understating breeding in a DV 2.0 park.
The first post is mostly a "What's different in 2.0" type write up for existing players. It may not be all that useful to new players, but we've got something in the works for them too.
That said, we've been living under the new rules for less than a week now. Clear patterns have begun to emerge and, with so many questions, we need a place to consolidate the answers.
So we're releasing this in a less than finished state. But we WILL be editing it as we experiment and learn more. Everything written below is true to the best of my knowledge. In fact, since I put my name on it:
ANY AND ALL ERRORS IN THIS POST ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR
At some point, we will hopefully add some percentages and what not, but for now we are keeping it simple and pretty much math free.
- BS and the A-Team
[Editor's Note: Shout out to Pixie, who helped test most of BS's ridiculous ideas with speed, enthusiasm and aplomb! All Glory to Pixie! All Blame to Bloodstone!]
[BS's NOTE: And a MASSIVE shout out to r0b0-tr0n who did a ton of testing for the Sandbox and graciously shared his findings without a moments hesitation. You sir, are all class!]
New Rules!
- Most mixed breeding combination works pretty much like they did before the update. Something like Flower + Lichen will give you the exact same results as you would expect prior to DragonVale 2.0
- Dragons level 11+ now receive a bonus when breeding for Rare, Epic and Gemstone Dragons. Previously, this bonus only applied to level 16+ dragons. At this time, we do not know the value of the bonus (thanks to miew for pointing out this change), however it is stated in game that dragons of level 11+ get "Slightly better" breeding odds and dragons of level 16+ get "better" breeding odds.
- Like + Like does not always = Like. You can no longer be guaranteed to Clone a dragon by using two dragons of the same Species. Primary Dragons are the exception to this rule, as they only have a single Element to contribute. So Plant + Plant = Plant 100% of the time. But Flower + Flower can produce Flower, Poison or Pepper because the Elements (Fire and Plant) are present to produce any of those dragons. However, Like + Like seems to offer improved chances of a Clone, at least with limited dragons. Initial testing shows approximately a 35% chance of producing a Clone with Like + Like.
- Breeding Like + Like Opposite Dragons together can result in a clone Opposite Dragon or either of the two Primary Dragons. So Sandstorm + Sandstorm can produce Sandstorm, Earth or Air.
- Using Like + Like to breed out of season Limited Dragons is still possible, but it is no longer 100%. More testing is required before we can confirm what the chances are, but as stated it appears to be 35%
- Limited Dragons CANNOT produce out of season at all with just one parent. For example, while in season, the combo of Ghost + Cold could produce Mountain, Glacier or Ghost Dragons. Once Ghost leaves the market, that combo will only produce Mountain and Glacier dragons. Technically not a new rule, just stating it for the record.
- Epic Limited Dragons CAN still produce out of season with just one Epic Limited Parent, but for most of the combos there is only a small percentage chance of doing so now. This is also true for non limited Epic Dragons.
- Epic Dragons can now produce other sorts of dragon, including Basic, Hybrid, Limited and even other Epic Dragons. When breeding, Epic Dragons contribute some or all of their component Elements. Epic Dragons can even produce other Epic Dragons of a different Type!
Here's a quick list of Epic Dragons and the elements they contribute when breeding.

Platinum is odd in that it contributes Air and Metal, instead of Water and Metal as might be expected. This seems like an error, but has not yet been corrected.
Cyclops and the OLY's all contribute only 2 of their component elements. This may change at some point in the future.
