I should add that these days i celebrate 25 years on the web. I started with the introduction of windows 95 and a modem of 54kb! So I have seen many new things on the net. Many of them made for people who act before thinking.

My exposure to the 'net dates back to '91 or so w/ Unix and shortly after Win 3.0 and a 9600 baud modem.
Over the years I have seen the web take on the personality of the characters involved in the 'net of the 90's: Students and professionals sharing information. Because there were so many students, many of them 18-24 year old males the internet is still very much a tool of adult humor and topics, with a strong need for the 'wowzer!' effect of seeing something bigger than life. Most everything is based on information and entertainment, but not necessarily in that order and even the information tends to be infotainment

54K modem for the win! I still have a box of phone wire for... you know... when the internet fails and the only way to connect is over the phone using a clunker laptop that still has a built-in modem.
Or maybe I can safely dispose of my box of phone wire.
For those of you who, like me, do not use and cannot comprehend why Facebook exists, I thought you may be interested in a little social experiment I am conducting.
I am trying to make new friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I take a walk in the nearby small town and tell passers by what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom.
I give them pictures of my family, Family pets, ‘selfies’ of me gardening, DIY, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch and generally doing what anybody and everybody does every day.
I also listen to their conversations, give them the "thumbs up" and tell them I like them, and it works just like Facebook.
I already have four people following me: two police officers, a private investigator and a psychiatrist.
You can be very brilliant, Greg. Thanks for this post.

My first Home computer was an IBM clone - $2,000 for monitor, CPU, modem, keyboard, mouse, 18" wide dot-matrix printer. Circa 1985. My dream since I became a part-time data entry operator for city hall in '79 ( to support my ceramics addiction).
Green screen with white printing.

Yah, we still use a landline-based phone here at home. Neither my wife nor I even have a cellphone.

54kb, Luxury!
I remember upgrading from 1200 baud to 9600!
My first was 75 baud. I remember the luxury and speed of 300. Ah those were the days. And teletypes. Don't get me started on teletypes

Ahhh the teletype ! Marjorie was in charge and was handling the very very noisy machine embeded in a huge wooden case. And we loved going down to bring our messages duly typed (on a regular typing machine) to her office and watch her typing it in the machine and out came those endless ribbons with plenty of little holes. In those days it was pure magic to be able to correspond with far away countries. And in turn, we receive pieces of paper on which the incoming messages were sticked, a bit like former telegrammes. Another thing which has since disappeared. Remeber when the post man brought you a telegramme. Those were the days as they say ...

I'd reminisce about paper tape too. Except I had to fix the )/$\{}%\|~>\}#> machines for a living.

First computer I used at school (and there was only one of the monstrosities) had no keyboard or screen. A card reader for input and a dot matrix printer for output. A lot of time with a HB pencil and a stack of cards that looked like this
I just can't believe how big this has gotten... When we started out it was just a few ppl... Wow you all have done an amazing job keeping our little home alive and growing... I have missed this place but had to take care of life stuff but now I am BACK!!!! Oh and it took forever to remember how to work this thing... Lol...

So indescribably awesome to have you back. Picked up the game again? You will have a lot to catch up on. And if you haven't looked at it for ages, probably an awful lot of gems to collect. That was my experience on my return.
