Dragon Breeding - The Basics There are 7 primary dragon types. Jungle, Fire, Earth, Frozen, Water, Fairy and Air, designated by having 1 star. These can each be bred with each other to produce two different two star hybrids (e.g., Jungle/Fire is Flytrap, Fire/Jungle is Wildfire). At the time of writing not all these hybrids exist.
There is also a series of uncommon hybrids, with a 3 star designation, but not too many of these exist yet. And there are already a few hybrids that contain more than 2 elements. A Cinder Dragon, for example, contains Fire, Earth and Jungle elements. All of these dragons can be bred by ensuring the required elements are in the parent dragons.
Each of these regular element dragons has an Enchanted version as well. The Enchanted version of a dragon can be bred by ensuring that dragon is one of the parents. For example, Enchanted Flytrap can be bred by breeding a Flytrap dragon with any other dragon.
The Epics
There are 4 types of Rare dragons, Rainbow, Sunken, Ancient and the new limited Treat. The breeding tips for these dragons can be found in the Dragonarium.
The Gemstones
There are currently two gemstone dragons available, but they are not breedable. It seems that they can only be obtained for cash or by logging in daily and collecting a prize from the calendar. Both of these gemstone dragons also have an enchanted version, which can be obtained in the same way.

Habitats and Locations Habitats and Locations are two different areas where your dragons can live. Habitats are placed on your Island so you can see the dragons in them as the go about their day. Dragons in habitats earn you Dragon Cash. Dragons in Locations are placed on separate Islands, and you don't really get to see them. They don't earn Dragon Cash, but as more, and higher level, dragons are in your locations you can collect better rewards when your dragons go gathering, and decorations are unlocked for you to buy. You can breed with dragons in habitats or locations.
Habitats You get extra habitat slots as you increase in level, but this does not necessarily equate to more habitats. The small size regular habitats use 1 slot and can hold 2 dragons. The various elements have different cost and caps on them, but they are all the same size and they all hold 2 dragons. The Fossil and Rainbow habitats only hold 1 dragon.
At Level 10 you can build large habitats, which can hold 4 dragons, and hybrid habitats (Jungle/Fire, Desert/Air, etc) in all the possible combinations, and they can hold 4 of either of the two types of dragon. However both these types of habitat use up 2 habitat slots. So one large Jungle habitat uses the same amount of resources as 2 small habitats, and in both cases you can display 4 dragons.

*A second location is available at Level 6 and you can buy either the 'Switchgrass Desert' or 'Darklight Cavern'. The third location is available at Level 20. ** The Fossil habitat is available after you purchase either location, but you cannot breed a dragon that can use the habitat until Level 7 (when you unlock the Water Dragon). Also, the Desert element is required for the Petroglyph Dragon, and the Cavern element is required for the Fossil Dragon.
Locations The separate islands are initially unlocked as just places you can send your dragons to gather food and other items. Then you get the ability to upgrade them to house 5 dragons. A further upgrade expands the number to 10, etc. The level of each dragon counts towards unlocking the rewards for each element (the 4 base elements and the element of the location). So if you have 5 x level 5 Jungle dragons or Jungle dragon hybrids at Brightleaf Jungle, you have a total of 25 Jungle levels there. This unlocks the second tier rewards; Vine Pepper and Jungle Mishrooms can be 'gathered' as rewards by dragons, and the Jungle Planter is available to buy in the Market.
Location availability The first location, the Brightleaf Jungle, is collected as part of the Tutorial. Further location slots are available as you go up in Level, with another location being available at Level 6. You can buy either Switchgrass Desert or Darklight Cavern at Level 6 and the other is available at Level 20. I don't think there is an advantage to one or the other, so maybe choose which one you want first based on which hybrids you prefer. The Glimmerverse location is only available after the other 3 have been purchased (meaning you cannot buy it at Level 20 in lieu of the Switchgrass Desert or the Darklight Cavern) and is available at
*The second location you unlock (either Switchgrass Desert or Darklight Cavern) is upgradeable as you work your way up to Level 19. At Level 20 you unlock the third location, and you can immediately buy it and pay for 3 upgrades so that it can house 15 dragons. **The Glimmerverse location unlocks at Level 30. You can immediately upgrade it 5 times so that it can house 25 dragons.
Variant dragons are bred via a parent dragon and a base element from the other parent. e.g. a Paradise Dragon + a Fern Dragon can result in a a EvParadise or a FvFern variant.

Added the new times under the variants grid and started going through to edit the times on all the pix. Then I realised that the gem costs are wrong as well and I'll have to edit all those. Thinking about things for a minute ...
So bred these two together in the regular cave, 25 times. In this order.
and we got
EvFire x 6 WvFire WvUnderbrush x 3 WvUnderbrush (with Sealed Coin Spell) WvUnderbrush (with Golden Seed Spell) FvUnderbrush x 2
Tropical (with Sealed Hatch Spell) Underbrush x 4 Flytrap (with Sealed Coin Spell) Flytrap Paradise x 2 Lake x 2
Now, a couple of those breeds were kept as pedestals, so it's possible there was another breed with a spell or two. But it seems like spells might transfer to dragons about 15% of the time.
And variant dragons came out 14 times, or 56% of the time. More testing to be done, with the variant/multispell dragon on the left ...

And then they will start introducing limiteds. Which may or may not have the variant option. I would like to see the game go live globally, with an Easter dragon to breed. Much like Gizmonauts launched globally with a Halloween bot.
I've found that the above information about feeding is incorrect. I've been testing. I can explain it better tomorrow when I have my computer, but I tested 12 different dragons and found 4 different feeding/leveling patterns. The one above fit for the 3 Paradise dragons I tried (regular and two variants) but I tried the regular and two variants of Fire, Jungle and Flytrap and got other patterns (that were a lot cheaper in total).

So far I have used only Dragon Snaps so that it could be as accurate as possible. I started all of the dragons out in fire habitats (except the jungle, which were in jungle habitats). At level 5 I moved the Av Flytrap to a jungle habitat so I could see if that made any difference. But as you can see, it kept leveling up the same way as the Fv Flytrap.
So I've gotten 4 patterns so far: -one for the non-variant base and location dragon. It starts off at 16 and doubles every level, except between 5 and 6, where it is multiplied by 2.5. -one for the variant base and variant location, as well as the Flytrap, dragons. It starts at 40 and doubles every level, with no exceptions. -one for the variant Flytrap dragons. It starts at 60 and doubles every level, but I have only gotten to level 7 so far. -one for the Paradise dragons, both normal and variants. It's the pattern described in the post above.
At first when I noticed that they seemed to be leveling up differently, I assumed it might be that each category (base, location, hybrid, variant, etc.) had its own pattern. But I'm glad I tested two hybrids, because the Paradise and Flytrap are clearly different. What's also different about Paradise is that the normal Paradise and the variant Paradise level up with the same pattern, but for the other dragons the variants required more food.
I tested both uncommon and rare variants, and in all 4 cases there was no difference in their leveling patterns.
Note that the base/location dragons and the Paradise dragons start out with the same pattern, but it changes at level 6. So if you wanted to test which of these patterns a dragon has, it wouldn't be enough to see how much food it takes to get to level 2. Seeing that the dragon requires 40 or 60 to get to level 2 would be enough to determine its pattern (assuming the above 4 patterns are the only ones, which of course might not be the case). But if the dragon requires 16 to get to level 2, you'd have to level it up to 6 to know if it matches the Fire/Jungle pattern or the Paradise pattern. However, I assume it's the case that the Fire/Jungle pattern will be shared by base and location dragons, and that the Paradise pattern would be shared by hybrid dragons.
So far I have all 45 jungle/jungle hybrid variants and all 20 base/base variants. But I've leveled all of them up quite a bit so I think I'd like to continue by starting on the Desert dragons. After I get some more of the above to level 10, that is, to make sure I know the patterns are the way they seem.

This is great stuff. Pretty sure all dragons levelled up the same way originally, as I was keeping an eye on all my dragons. Nice that they've made the more common dragons easier to level up. Anyone else that has more info to add, please do, so we can make this pretty conclusive. Especially important for the next person to breed an Epic dragon.
EvCavern - messed up the food by accidentally clicking a large item when the small ones ran out. It seems like 560 food was required to get to level 4. Which would be
80 to complete 1 160 to complete 2 320 to complete 3
I also think it was an Earth dragon snap I fed it, which should have given a 25% bonus, but that doesn't seem to have happened, else it would have been a total of 608 food to get to level 4, which doesn't divide nicely. Or, the boost doesn't count if the element is the variant element, as it was in this case.
Anyone, this is not concrete, but seems likely.

Will have a look at editing the table in the first post.
EDIT: Also, those Paradise numbers are obviously just a hold over from the game launch. There is no way they are supposed to be that progression, and the same for both regular and variant versions of the dragon. I am guessing they have not updated that part of the rules.

Food requirement for my AvRainbow: level 1-2: 120 level 2-3: 240 level 3-4: 480 level 4-5: 960
I am sensing a pattern here.
I will keep watching and only report if it does not keep doubling.
