I was punked. Doh! It was only a regular Rainbow dragon.
I'm fairly sure the mix of location elements are what gives Rainbows. Maybe this one should give Pteroglyph too? I'm not entirely sure. Ill try with two Sand plus 4 elements and see what that can give me instead.
I think you shouldn't use two location element, because if my assumption is correct about the breeding formula for a rainbow dragon, your breeding combination may give you a chance to breed not only a fossil and petroglyph but as well as rainbow dragon. My hunch on the breeding formula for a Rainbow Dragon is:
Rainbow Dragon - 3base element + 2location element
If you analyze all the successful breeding that produce a rainbow dragon posted in this forum, you can see that it follows the formula above. But of course I'm not 100% sure, just my analysis.
Ah yes thank you for reminding me that Rainbow combos seem to only be 3 base elements. What threw me off is the fact that I've gotten earth variants from Rainbow pairings despite the fact that earth element never was part of the combo that created the Rainbow nor was it part of the matched dragon.
I would prefer if there was a way to avoid getting Rainbow when aiming for Fossil and Pteroglyph but it sees it will always be part of the possible fails. It might be possible when only using one location element as you said. I'll do a period of testing and see what I come up with.

Hi guys, I'm supernew here and don't know if this is relevant, but I just managed to breed a Petroglyth-dragon using FvCanoyndragon with AvCliffdragon and couldn't find anything posted on how to get it so I just thought I would share it here. =)

Hi and welcome to the forum. Super glad to have you here. And thanks for sharing the info. We thought it was two desert dragons with all four base elements, so we're very happy to have that confirmed.
Love the egg. What's the other one to the left?
Level 41. I believe you are probably the most advanced player here. Any other tips, tricks or things you have learned that you want to pass on … we're listening. :-)

The egg on the left should be a Watervariant Fossil.
I don't know if I'm all that wise, but the most important part for me I think is to be in a good and active guild/clan that can help you with the applauds and that you can talk to about the game, if there is anything you don't know or are having problems with or just general tips and tricks about combos and stuff, that has been incredibly helpful for me. Also, do the achievements like crazy, that will help you a lot. =)
We from guild Night Hawks have together successfully breeded an Plume Dragon with the following dragons: FvFern Dragon Breeded with WvCanopy Dragon. Both of these two were lvl 8 and thought of sharing this info with you as well
Hey! Sorry about the late update. The dragon mentioned in my previous post was as WvRainbow. The fossil combo a fellow guild player told me seems unsuccessul. But I did have success with fossil using the breeding combo suggested to work later in the thread. Great job guys!
Currently trying for plumed (2jungle+4baseelem) and iris (2fairy+4baseelem). No luck so far but I'm hopeful!

How great of you to share the Petroglyph combo! Worked like a charm for me. And how outstanding is the grown Petro? Let's see if I can register and post a pic for everyone longing for it!

You don't have to register to post a picture, since we've hit the forum's cap for uploading images. You can upload the images on image hosting websites like imgur, and post them here using BBCode.
Of course, we'd be happy if you register as a member of the forum, whatever the reason!

Hi and Welcome. Great to see you posting.
Thanks for the information. I think that confirms all the Epics. Although I'm not 100% sure of how many elements are required for Rainbow.
Hi I have looked at all the posts, but I can't find out how to breed the plumed dragon. Can anyone help? (I just got to lvl 9)
Look four posts above yours for this:

It seems the rule for breeding a Plumed is to have all 4 base elements and 2 Jungle elements, so there should be a few combinations that do it, but you need to Variant parents to make a Plumed and if you have only just unlocked the Air element you won't have an Air variant hybrid yet.
Lake and Paradise variants have the shortest breed times for failed attempts, so we recommend EvLake + AvParadise or AvLake + EvParadise. Else, if you already have a Jungle hybrid with 2 of the remaining elements, concentrate on trying to make an Air variant with a hybrid of the remaining element.
If I have made this too confusing for you, just post any Jungle variant dragons you have and we can give you the complimentary parents you will need to try for the Plumed.
Great to see you here, btw. Thanks for posting. When you hit Level 11 search for the "Dragonvale Community" Guild to join us for some fun.
I've looked at the link Fletch. And I've tried to breed a AvParadise and a EvLake, but I can't find out how to do it. Do I need to breed them with their parents? And thank you again

Variants are bred by breeding the dragon you want to make into a variant with a dragon that has the variant element. So for the above:
Paradise + Air (or Canopy/Mist/Tumbleweed/Soaring/etc) can get you an AvParadise. Lake + Earth (or Fern/Underbrush/Cliff/Dune/etc) can get you an EvLake.

So I just discovered that you can now cast spells to make variant dragons. Enchant spells add the variant element to the dragon, seemingly permanently. This should make it easier to finish off a collection, but seemingly make the game that little bit more pointless. A dragon breeding game where you don't have to breed for all the dragons?

I've been using the spells to enchant my dragons, and it's made it a lot easier to build my collection of dragons. But yes, it definitely defeats the purpose of breeding them, which was so much more difficult. Now you can select specific foods to gather and grow and you're all set.
