EARNING MAGIC During SECRETS OF SPELLFORM, you can earn Magic by: - Breeding dragons - Purchasing dragons with Gems - Playing games in Gardenia’s Gallery - Completing missions at the Parade Garden - Collecting from habitats - Tapping on petrified House Wizards and Witches - Competing in the Colosseum - Viewing Visions from Tolzar
COMPLETING SECRETS OF SPELLFORM You’ll be able to collect Magic as long as Kai and Ellie hold up their Island. When their wizarding strength weakens, they’ll warn you that things may come to an end. The Bizarre Bazaar will remain open for a few days after their spells fade...
Quil breaks down the numbers to aid Spellform strategy:
Also keep in mind that 10 percent of the chests you get from the gem game will always contain a new piece, 90 percent will either be new or repeats. It doesn't change the odds too much, although it slightly increases your new piece count.
I'm trying to work out all the numbers, and I do see it's not as guaranteed as I hoped even spending everything on the costumes.
1500 gems spent is 1500/5 = 300 games. 3 chests per game = 900 chests. About 11 percent of them have pieces = 100 pieces. We're also getting two free chests from login rewards that can be dups, but that's 102 pieces total.
We have 56 pieces with the first 6 dragons, 9.33 pieces per dragon. We can guess all 10 will be 93/94 pieces total. We're going to get at least one community chest and one final chest with a guaranteed new piece, so we can drop the counts to 91/92.
I'm at 32k magic today, expecting to end around 64k as we're roughly half way through the event. If I want to buy 2 dragons and spend 40k on pieces, I can buy 27 pieces. I'll need to collect 65 new pieces from the 102 total game pieces. That would take too much luck to finish, as dups become common. You'll also want to be sure to wait until all pieces are available before you start spending the 1500 gems, and most of us haven't done that.
Increase your spending to 64k magic, and you can buy 43 pieces but nothing else. Then you'll need to collect 49 new pieces, which is a little more doable as I'm at 40 without the last 4 dragons available. I planned to spend a few hundred more gems, and 9 new pieces shouldn't be out of reach. Had I waited until the end to spend any gems, I likely would have had a higher count and finished easily with this scenario, probably not needing all 64k and being able to buy a dragon too.
We shouldn't have to run the math in such detail to determine how to play their game and have a chance to finish one part of their event. This doesn't even include getting the dragons, which you just need to be lucky for some and assume cloning for the rest will occur at a later date.
The Darcowl on the loading screen looks like Film!Toothless and I am in love already. 💖
I guess the costume building is a more elegant way of handling things than the stack of 10 decorations for each dragon.
Looks like the spellforming will mean we have 2 (or 3?) looks for each of these dragons. That seems cool.
EDIT: 3 looks per dragon is confirmed by adlerist 's post (thanks for posting the screengrab!) below. The dragons there appear to be the Organic (left) and Conjured (right) forms of Darcowl, and given we can see the standard adult Darcowl on the loading screen, that makes 3. I like the standard one best for this dragon I think.

Never mind evolving dragons. Sometimes all you need is a good enhancement.
I love this event and it’s only been 41 minutes.

I gem bought a few plays on Name That Dragon to see how easily the costume pieces came from the game chests. They're not guaranteed, and are... I wouldn't go as far as to say rare, more uncommon. Specifically, I got a piece on the 4th and the 13th chest, both Outrider pieces.
Edit: The other loading screen dragon is a Conjured Outrider, and the Secrets Are Surfacing silhouettes are the three Outrider forms.

I bought 3 extra plays and got 1 piece, Outrider wings. Just hope we get unique pieces each time .

Got 9 chests (3 sets of 3) , all food, gold or gem.
So you need to get a piece (or the whole set of pieces) to be able to buy the 12k dragon ? And the only reliable way to get a piece is the 1500 chest ?
3 friends looking for Coop friendships. Please add all 3 and drop me the notice.
To get them, you first need to complete one of their costume sets. Think evolution decorations. Each of them have two sets, but I believe you only need to complete one to be able to get the dragon.
When you've got the dragon, you can swap their looks between any of their sets you have completed (and presumably no costume as well) in the costume building, much like swapping traits in that Rift building.
You get costume pieces as an uncommon result from minigame chests, or the 1500 magic chest in the market guarantees an unowned piece. (As always, expect limiteds and plan magic spending accordingly.)
Magic is old-school get from many things, cap at 1000. (2000 on doubles.)

I have to say that not guaranteeing a piece when spending gems for an extra play is a terrible move by Backflip. Still out of town and don’t have a lot of time to look at it. Is there a reason to need more than 1 of a piece?

So we can’t breed these dragons? We can only purchase them once we acquire all of their costume pieces?

I think they get equipped on the costumed dragon like when you apply a theme to an island, so if you want 2 of the same dragon/costume combo you'll need a second set of that costume. The Incredible tier just lets you straight-up buy seconds if you want to do that.
Or you can sell extras for 50 magic. Which seems a little on the low side to me, but there we go.

Not right now. They might be breedable if you get the costume pieces? I don't know if anyone's completed a set yet to find out. You definitely can't buy them without a complete set though.
The base dragons should be clonable in social either way, but you obviously won't be able to costume them without the costume.
