Backflip was shutdown two months ago, but due to working laws in Colorado the team was given two months notice. Their last day is next week. Unless something changes, this will be the final 'new' DV event. We are hopeful that they keep on enough staff to continue to cycle existing events in the future and provide enough support that they are allowed to continue, but no one knows what will happen in 2020. This uncertainty is driving away a significant number of players which only hurts the chances of keeping the game running. I wish they would have made an announcement regarding the future of the game, but perhaps Hasbro doesn't even know yet - or perhaps they're milking one last event for revenue.
I'm so confused by this. Some other players also said they read on Discord or Facebook that they heard all the BFS employees are still there b/c of some Colorado law. If they didn't leave 2 months ago when the news first hit why wasn't there a regular om of noms? And why are they slow in replying? So they're all going to leave at the end of Dec right after the event starts? Why even do the event if you have to leave the next week?? I'm so confused it doesn't make any sense. But I'm glad we have the event tho.
I believe the confusion started with this article. For those who aren’t aware of the Backflip layoff details, this article first mentioned the 23 December date. On 23 October, BFS informed their employees and sent notice of their plans to layoff 86 employees to the state of Colorado, per the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.
So just to clarify this. In the real world, when I’m not roaming about the Vale, one of my main focuses is on Civil Rights issues (employment, housing, public accommodations, voting rights). The vast majority of this is covered by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which includes labour legislation. While my emphasis is on discrimination cases and civil rights compliance, it’s very common to run into general employment laws.
The WARN Act is a federal law requiring employers with 100+ employees to notify the state and their employees of layoffs at least 60 days before the loss of employment. As a federal law, all states comply with WARN, so this isn’t a Colorado legal quirk that BFS must follow. If you’re ever faced with a layoff in the US, look up the protections WARN provides.
In accordance with WARN, a notice was recorded with the state on 23 October and the layoff date set at 23 December to fulfill the required 60 days.
However, this does not mean all BFS employees will be working until 23 December. In fact, we know from social media posts and numerous LinkedIn profiles many employees left in October with generous severance packages. One of the first articles that reported the layoffs verified only the 'DragonVale team' has stayed on and mentioned the 60-day notice period 'even though most developers have already been sent home'.
In the same way that many employees are no longer with BFS, other employees can stay on past 23 December. The 23 December date was likely selected to simply meet the 60-day WARN requirement, and unfortunately doesn’t give us any clues into DV post-event. I’d like to imagine Om of Noms was a non-event so the remaining DV team could concentrate on a farewell Xmas event and perhaps even prep DV for an automated bot future with minimal human contact. But I might be pushing my wish list to great lengths.

I know most of us are high level players without ever having spent a single dollar on the game, and whilst that is a commendable achievement (I pride myself on it) maybe if the 400K that play the game for free spent a little bit of our Christmas money we might have a chance of keeping this lovely game! Let’s fight for what we have while we have it!

I really appreciate this positive and refreshing approach. I know it’s easy to target Hasbro, and while there is blame to lay on them for BFS/DV’s demise, there is enough blame for everyone. I’ve seen many, many post by players on other DV social media sites claiming they’ve never spent a penny on the game. That’s a big reason why DV can’t continue and that blame falls on us players.
BFS tried in vain to get us to spend but we called them money grabbing when they did. Of course, BFS made mistakes too. Removing ads/free gems from paying players’ games did a huge disservice. So everyone is to blame.
I think a lot of players on this forum have spent money on DV. I have, and the only thing that’s keeping me from doing so with this event is not knowing if the game will end when the event does. At this point, I don’t believe anything can save BFS, but maybe a positive money flow could help the decision to let DV continue without updates and new content. Maybe not. I have a feeling lots of players won’t take the gamble and make an in-app purchase. But you have really helped me to reevaluate, and I’ll consider spending as the event moves along.

There is no daily limit on Iceberries, but collecting from habitats does have a cap of 500 per day on a regular day, 1000 on double days, and 1500 on a triple day.

Quil, thank you for the information from October until now. If it wasn’t for this place, I wouldn’t even know that DV was coming to an end, and that would be a huge shock when it suddenly happened!

You’re correct. The Prismatic Pantheon setting to find Sandakloz and the presents is None + Visitors + Epic. They only appear once a day. Personally, I much prefer once daily over repeat re-spawning every 4 or 12 hours. Hunting for anything in the Vale is my least favourite activity.

Cyn, they don't reset. By a fluke of luck I cleared the border AND flag-bearers before midnight CET and it's almost reset but still no second border.

I know what you mean, I was so happy to see a real event with actual new dragons. After reading a few posts here it may not be so great though. Maybe the beginning of the end 😢 Anyway, if it turns out that way this is a really good Christmas present from them. It’s not like some previous events for me, “ugh not another event”. Now I am actually all happy and excited, because it has been awile.
Unless of course if they pull the plug in the middle of it, then I will become my grumpy old self. Let’s hope not.
P.S. I tried Elder Cold and Elder Water without luck, got it with Level 20 Iceberg. I know....some say it doesn’t matter but sometimes I believe it doesn’t hurt to share what worked. 😉
If you want to try to get as many bonus iceberries as possible go for limited dragons first. You will get permanent dragons along the way. This is always my strategy and I usually breed most of the dragons this way and get lots of currency. Remember even though the dragons do not show on the list, you can breed for expired dragons that can be cloned. Use your runes to get hard to get dragons, twins or rift versions. 🐨

The blue border around the Visitors icon does include Sandakloz. In the past, the event mascot wasn’t recognised and the coloured border would disappear even though the mascot was still meandering around the Vale.

A big Thank You to drow for updating the Sandbox so promptly. An invaluable resource.
I need a lot of the winter dragons in the Rift and quite a few have a specific dragon plus an element. By using the Sandbox I can easily check what I can breed for by combining dragon requirements.
For example, Flicker requires Gift and an Earth element. This already gives you quite a few Winter Dragons. If you breed Gift and Coal together, you also get the possibility of Krampus and Lace with no extra elements added to the original breed.

I didn't think to grab a screenshot, but I'm 99% positive I had a present earlier today that was greyed out despite having None+Visitors+Epic selected.
Watching videos is glitching for me. After the video ends and the game resumes on my screen, it’s weirdly stretched and I have to swipe-close the app and restart for the screen to be normal again. Is this happening with anyone else?

Yes, that's the case for me, too. It's the purple present in my park that is greyed out. It shows up if I also select "Air" as well as "None+Visitors+Epic". Hope that helps some people!
