12 entries which is just fantastic. And that's given me another idea for a pledge. "Prime" which means giving a gem to the nth person to breed the dragon, if n is a prime number. So (not the first, because 1 is not a prime number) the second, the third, the 5th, the 7th, the 11th, etc.
Editing my pledge now.
Prime numbers, hmmm 🧐 I don’t have any school age kids, so I had to dig back deep into the cobwebby corner of my brain for that one 😆. Numbers divisible only by themselves or one, right? I gonna have to google this just to make sure 🙃
Please change my pledge, removing Middle, and adding Prime, 1G+ 1T 😊

Just going to say, that if there a prime number of contestants, I will be paying out the winner as the winner, and as a prime contestant. So if we have 13 contestants, I'll be paying the winner 6 gems. You might want to clarify how you feel about that.
Fletch_smf_smf Not a problem 😊. I’m assuming that there will be a list/tally as all the participants breed the target dragon. I’ll go along with the list and pay to the Prime numbered friends 1G + 1T as they get the target, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, etc. and pay to the winner/last friend 3G + 3T. Also the first friend 1G + 1T too.
I was part great forum years ago, The DragonVale Breeding Group, and for a good while, back in the days of iso Game Center, we had a Gem Circle going. We had a rotating list of participating friends and everyone on the list paid the top person a gem everyday for 5 days. When the list got too long it was knocked down to 2 days lol. This was mainly to help out new players during events. So I don’t have a problem paying out to whomever. I also don’t have set daily gem friends, I receive more than I can give out in a day, so gem friends are on a rotation for me. And adding a competition friend isn’t an hardship. 😊

Since this is my first "anniversary" playing DV, I have been pleasantly surprised to see they seem to be following the traditional anniversary gift themes for the US. The 8th anniversary (Bronze; Pottery) gave us Terracotta. The 9th anniversary is Willow/Pottery. Any thoughts on what this dragon will be? Or is that a separate contest?

I am sure that Deca will keep the tradition going and the 9th anniversary dragon will fit in with the rest of the anniversary dragons.

8th was pottery, so I’m thinking this one will be willow-ish lol.
Let’s Guess!!
Since we already have a willow, I’m guessing a play on Wicker or Rattan. We could have a light colored dragon with a woven pattern, like rattan, and the elements of plant, earth, air and light.

So my guess is that it will be some sort of wreath looking dragon. But I’m frequently wrong with my guesses.
I’m in. Still don’t really understand the whole Darcy to reverse Buffy pledges, but I haven’t read old competitions.
Most of the pledge names are the names of forum members that used to give a special pledge. Wapatango and GregDarcy had a kind of friendly "war" (in fact I believe they were best friends). So they made pledges with which most of the players would get a gem but not their "enemy".
If I would make a pledge like "Darcy (I nominate bagmom)" That would mean that I would own a gem to each player that breeds its dragon after bagmom had bred her's
How could you possibly suggest that I was friends with that old bag of bones GregDarcy ? I am horrified at the very thought! You should be ashamed of yourself for even suggesting it crumble608. If people believed such nonsense, my reputation would be ruined.
I love my vine dragon avatar created by ElektronX. Now, if only BFS would add it to the game...

Has to look this up, because giving a Willow tree seemed an odd tradition. But it looks like it’s stuff made from long thin branches. Is that how a Willow tree grows? With long thin branches?

Yes, long thin drooping branches, usually along a water source.
Think of the willow tree from Pocahontas or the whomping willow in Harry Potter. I watch lots of movies with the grand kids

Have not seen Pocahontas, I'm sorry. And I didn't realise the whomping willow was rooted in reality. :-)

Well maybe an actual willow tree doesn’t intentionally whomp you, hehe. But getting smacked with a willow branch, while in a battle with ones brother, sure does sting the legs. 😏😆

100% agree with the sting from willow branches during brother battles, LynnMarie! 😆
As for the 9th dragon, a picnic basket immediately comes to mind. So yes a light-colored, wicker-patterned dragon, but plant (for basket, blanket, food), light (for the sun), metal (for the silverware), and earth (for dishware, source of goodies in the basket, or just another outside element). And then the story would have something to do with a picnic.

BagMom A picnic dragon!! What a great and imaginative idea!! I would love to see this!! The wicker looking dragon could carry a picnic basket. 😆 Hello Deca!! This one please!! ⬆️👍🏻💗🐉
yep, but the sting makes it worth it as long as you get the in last hit. 😈

How does the start of comp work? (With regards to release time falling in work/sleep/dinner time depending on your time zone.) What is the accepted time frame from release of dragon to start of first breed?

relax I think that all competitors want to get the new dragon and will start to breed for it as soon as they get to know that the dragon is out (and when they have a free cave) I believe there is no need to specify a time frame

Yeah, it’s just when your first able to start breeding for it. This one is a special case, because we know when it will become available, but generally it’s a surprise when an appropriate dragon is added to the game.
So it’s when you find out, and you have a cave free to start breeding for it.

I'm not really worried about others starting late. More about me, I don't want to be disqualified for starting late if I still have a long breed to finish OR if e.g. I'm out for a walk at release time.
