The flame horns alone put the animation for this dragon in its own realm.
Then he lights the campfire with his horns — goodbye matches!
2. Rift trait: 4
Due to the fire on Wilderness’s head and a palette of colours from the wings to the body, some traits clash. So it is good the trait placement is minimal.

I really like how many of DragonLover’s Navigation Dragon features were incorporated into the Wilderness Dragon, like the day/night versions and the map design on the wings.

Enormous congratulations to the DV Team for untangling the challenge and figuring out how to put a flame animation on a dragon. Given the limitations of DV’s 11–year-old custom game engine, that is an immense accomplishment! The leaps and bounds you’ve made with the dragon animation in the last 18 months is astonishing.
Also, I love the salad growing on this dragon.

WILDERNESS DRAGON
1. Animation: 5/5 Really amazing but requires two videos to see it.
2. Rift trait: 5/5 Looks great with the Light and Dark traits. I have the Cold and Earth traits and it doesn’t look nearly as good.
3. Size (if you don’t own Wilderness, please check a friend’s park): 5/5
4. Price (16,500 Pinecones): 1/5 I know the event had less dragons but there also wasn’t an extra mechanism to earn pinecones.
5. How well does Wilderness fit the theme: 5/5
6. Design details: 5/5
7. How much do you like Wilderness (1 = I hate it, 5 = I love it!): 5/5
8. Comments/feedback for Deca (optional): I’m really glad DECA used DragonLover’s concept of a day night dragon for Wilderness and the map wings. It’s interesting that DECA made a pirate dragon fit so well for a camping event. So much of Wilderness’s animation occurs off screen in the Dragonarium that if Adlerist didn’t add a second video, we wouldn’t be rating anything. The flame horns are incredible! But I’m always concerned when Wilderness goes into his tent that he’s going to set it on fire!

This is it... the moment everyone has (probably) been waiting for... it's time to rate the Wilderness dragon, the being I helped bring into existence.
Man, it's pretty surreal, rating my own dragon like this. Is it cheating to just do 5/5 for every category and call it a day? I'll just do that! ...nah, I'll give some proper thoughts. After all, it would be unfair to give a dragon special treatment, even one that I helped to make. That being said, the circumstances behind it will contribute slightly to my ratings, in addition to the normal judgement process that I make dragons go through for these posts.
Well... here's what I think about my present! Spoilers: it's a really nice present.
1. Rate Wilderness’ animation quality:5/5
Look at it go! The Wilderness dragon has some really nice animations going for it! First and foremost, the most notable thing about it is that the fire is actually animated! As far as I'm concerned, this is the first instance of a dragon's body fire actually moving, so congratulations to Deca Games for figuring that out. Furthermore, the rest of the animations are nice as well. The double air flip to light the campfire is a wonderful display of acrobatics. I also like the way that the Wilderness dragon crawls into its tent. The movement feels authentic and realistic for a living dragon sneaking into a man-made structure. Lastly, there's the fire breath animation, where a series of flares go up into the sky. The Wilderness dragon is prepared for anything, and I am prepared to watch my creation move around for ages.
The only thing that I would've changed is the one dancing animation, as it seems a bit jarring compared to the rest of the animations. It's a similar problem I had with the Chuck dragon. It's important to remember how a dragon's limbs and body structure play a role in its movements. Oh, and one more thing: remember to consider the size of the Dragonarium info box when animating dragons, as it's silly to watch the Wilderness dragon walk off screen. While these two issues aren't enough to dock any points, they're things I would just like to mention for future reference.
2. Rate Wilderness’ Rift trait and appearance:5/5
After almost two years of Deca Games' dragons, it's safe to say that the team has established a routine when it comes to Rift trait placement on dragons. Usually, the smaller details on a dragon are the parts that get the Rift treatment, and the Wilderness dragon is no different. The placement is exactly where I would expect it to be (minus some of the leg feathers being mysteriously untouched), and it looks aesthetically pleasing in both day and night form! None of the major parts of the design are overshadowed or overwhelmed by the Rift trait, and most of the different variants look pleasing on at least one form of the dragon. It's always an extra challenge to make a Rift trait look good on a dragon with day and night forms, so good work on Deca Games in this department!
3. Rate Wilderness’ size:5/5
Since the Wilderness dragon has a handful of smaller details, such as mushrooms on its back, it's important that it isn't too small in a habitat. Luckily, the Wilderness dragon gets an A+ in this department! You can make out most of the finer details of the dragon, but it's not so large that it's ridiculous. I can admire it among other dragons without it seeming out of place!
4. Rate Wilderness’ price (16,500 Pinecones):3/5
Alright, so the prices for the dragons in Into the Wild have been... not very friendly to the unlucky. While the release of the Wilderness dragon isn't a double one like in the previous event, it's still a bit much. It's the second most expensive dragon released by Deca Games, with the first being the Tebori dragon from last year's Memories in Paradise event. For future events, I would be sure to think carefully about how the average player is going to collect currency (without the "Plant dragon grinding" method). If there's less ways to collect currency, then the prices should be tailored to be considerate of these factors.
That being said, the Wilderness dragon's pricing is a bit more understanding than those of the other limited event dragons. It's the only new Epic-class dragon in the event, and it's this event's grand finale dragon, so it makes sense from a game design perspective to make this the most expensive dragon. I would just be more considerate of those who might have poor luck, especially given the high prices of the other limited dragons before the Wilderness dragon.
5. How well does Wilderness fit the theme of the event?:5/5
It's right in the name: Wilderness. If that's not a perfect reason for this dragon to fit in the Into the Wild event, I don't know what is. Even glancing past that, the dragon's design and theming match the theme of the event. It has the wild aesthetic, but it also partially ties into the concept of the rest of the limited event dragons. The Chimmit dragon was the master fisher teaching the scouts. The Chuck dragon was the woodcarver in charge of the craft side of the camping trip. The Chomp dragon was the head chef that kept the scouts fed. Lastly, the Wilderness dragon, while not directly tied to a specific type of camp counselor, serves as the perfect navigator and wilderness expert... hey, wait a minute, that's like the original design I made! Oh, but that wouldn't be for this category, that would be for...
6. Rate the attention to detail in Wilderness’ design:5/5
...this category! So I actually want to tackle this part of the post in two different ways. Let's start from the less personal viewpoint. The Wilderness dragon, true to its name, represents the wild parts of the Vale. The mushrooms and bark-like spines tie the dragon to nature, and it behaves in a way that a wild animal would likely behave. Even the tent animation makes sense, as sometimes, animals will investigate human belongings in search of food or shelter. Additionally, I like the flares that the Wilderness dragon can send up. As previously mentioned, it helps make sure that the dragon is prepared for anything it might face.
And now for the more personal analysis. I first would like to tell the community something important: the Wilderness dragon is not meant to be a one-to-one replica of my Navigation dragon design. Deca Games forgot to tell me in advance about them wanting to use my design (which I don't hold against them, don't worry!), but what they did publicly say before the event started was that there would be three community designed dragons in the event. Two of them would be directly inspired by their original fan designs--these dragons ended up being the Aperture and Burrow dragons--and the third one would be a more loose adaptation. This dragon, to everyone's surprise--including mine!--was the Wilderness dragon! Sure enough, Deca Games kept true to their word, and the Wilderness dragon is more like the Gatren dragon in that both designs are not one-to-one, just loose adaptations.
With that out of the way, I'd like to share my thoughts on this subject: I'm really, really happy that the design team kept the day and night forms for the Wilderness dragon!!! Besides the map wings, this was the most important aspect of my original Navigation dragon design, and the fact that it transferred over to the Wilderness dragon makes me immensely happy. Sure, the night form doesn't have a star map for wings, but it still has a starry sky, while the day form has the land map. I also noticed that the night form's color palette is very similar to the Navigation dragon's night colors. The dark blue is practically color picked! The day form doesn't share this trait, but I actually think the lighter blue works really well, and I probably wouldn't have thought of doing that for my Navigation dragon! I could go on and on, but I'll keep myself composed... except for just one more detail. I actually wouldn't have found this out on my own, so thank you to the Discord player who told me about this fun fact: the Wilderness dragon makes Dawnbringer dragon sounds!!! It even has the same audio glitch for the baby, in which it plays the adult sound!!! I have no idea if this was just a coincidence, but the Dawnbringer dragon is my favorite dragon in the game (alongside the Prestige dragon), and the fact that the Wilderness dragon shares the same roar is so cool!!! ...okay, now I'm done.
7. How much do you like Wilderness?:5/5
Okay, this just isn't fair. This is like asking me to pick my favorite child (assuming I had children)! Of course I'm going to love the dragon I helped to make! The Wilderness dragon already has such a great design and concept, so I was going to love it anyway. It's a day-night dragon with sparkles in its design, a dark color palette, and one of my favorite quadrupled body types. I can't help it! I simply have a type! It's a really good dragon, and I'm obligated to love it due to my contributions.
8. Additional feedback and comments
Alright, so for those who aren't interested in mushy stuff, you can skip this section.
DragonVale is incredibly important to me. I'm sure anyone whose read my lengthy Discord message in the server probably already knows why, but to make a TL;DR summary: DragonVale is the reason I love dragons, so needless to say, I owe a lot to this game for shaping me as a person. When Deca Games took over and started hosting community design contests, I knew what I needed to do. I made sure to enter every single one of them. While the idea of getting a dragon of mine in the game somehow was always a source of motivation, I also wanted to participate because of my passion for DragonVale. That's why even when I didn't place among the winners, I would still keep going and try again in the next contest.
The fact that Deca Games decided that one of my own designs was worthy of being in the game, even if it wasn't directly implemented like past fan designs, is beyond incredible. It really makes my heart soar. The fact that it was so close to the 10th anniversary of DragonVale makes it all the more magical to me, even though I'm sure it wasn't intentionally planned out that way. In a way, it feels like I'm being rewarded for my dedication to the game. I know I'm not an ultra-rare unique case, and I'm sure there will be plenty of other "swagons" in the future with their designs being implemented in the game, but I don't think I'll ever be able to shake away the feeling of knowing my legacy lives on forever in one of the most important games of my life. Thank you, Deca Games, for letting me be a part of DragonVale history!
Well, that's it for this event. I know this post was made after the deadline for the forum award, but I got a bit busy in real life with college and all the things that come with it. At the very least, I can say that I participated in all of the posts, and I can have the bragging rights of being able to rate a dragon that I helped to make! This event surely did end on a really high note, didn't it? Next time, I'll try to do these posts a bit earlier so that I can finish them in a more timely manner (and also feel less pressure to rush through the ratings). Until next time!
