I have never, ever experienced 8 in a row of anything during Rift breeding regardless of the number of outcomes or percentages. The last time I had anything approaching success in the Rift was in last year’s camping event. Since then the Rift has been mostly a dry hole. It’s the event dragon parents I can’t seem to breed in the Rift whenever they are available. And this is with many daily attempts. By comparison the Vale breeding caves are operating like they always have and I now have a Pisceian dragon from the EBC in a Zodiac habitat. Hopefully some of these forum posts will find their way to Deca and cause them to rethink some of their strategies, particularly regarding the Rift.
I’m too wound up in the game and need to take another break from the daily action for an event or three. I really hope I haven’t pulled anyone too far down with me and apologize if I have. This is a great time for a pause. My park is full, fully decorated, one of everything is on display (minus that pesky Woven pedestal), the paths are all joined, and the Visitors can come and go without paperwork and without being run through a security gauntlet. I may eventually post a few pictures and will pop into the forum regularly to see how things are going. Thanks for putting up with me. koala!
And I have tried (whenever it’s available) to breed a rifted tidal, but that one is my Moby Dick, absolutely impossible, sigh.
But on the bright side, Deca must have painted my gravity egg, yaaay, because it isn’t invisible any more! Happy happy happy joy joy joy because it is such a hassle to breed another egg. 🙏🥹😃
Breeding combination? Sun+Dusk. I was going for Midday. Hail has a 33% potential so repeated Hail hatchings didn’t surprise me.
Thank you.
Sun + Dusk, in the Rift, during the Day.
Chance of Hail (according to the Compendium, and I have no reason to doubt it) is 28.75% The chance of getting it 8 times in a row is 28.75%^8 which is 0.00467% Or approximately 1 in 21,500.
Of course, 8 Storms in a row, is also 0.00467%. I'm sure you'd find either of those as special as the other, so we're at 1 in 10,700. So if you got 100,000 Dragonvale players to breed Sun + Dusk, in the Rift, during the Day, 8 times, 9 of those players should get 8 Hails or Storms in a row.
Is there a way to check how many people are playing Dragonvale?
The point is, 8 Hails (or Storms) in a row will happen all the time.
The rifted part will lower the odds a little, but I'm not sure by how much. It is definitely not 25% chance of getting a non rifted, because I can breed all day without getting a non rifted. And I almost never get 2 non rifted in a row, which should happen 6% of the time (25% of 25%).
But you’re altering the results in your favor. Harwood bred 8 traited Hail dragons in a row, not 8 Hail and Storm dragons. By adding Storm to your results, you’re not showing the correct numbers for what Harwood bred.
It is unusual to receive 8 Hail dragons in a row, but since there’s not a lot of outcomes, it’s not terribly surprising.
That’s interesting you think the untraited percentage as lower than 25%. Everyone else thinks the percentage is 25% or higher. I’ve received two untraited dragons in a row. It’s not that rare.
I kept track of my Rift breeds for a little while but got busy and stopped. Adlerist has 5 years of Rift breeding results and thinks the percentage is higher. But I might have misunderstood? adlerist correct me if I’m wrong. I may have gotten it backwards.

Yes, that’s correct. Storm should not be included in the breeding results, since Hail was the only offspring. There’s a 1 in 21,500 chance of receiving eight consecutive Hails, so it’s not a common occurrence. It’s not the rarest occurrence either, since there’s only nine potential offspring with Dusk + Sun, but it doesn’t happen 'all the time'.
The percentage for an untraited dragon in the Rift does not appear to be under 25%. Beyond my own years of results, there is much evidence from other players. And yes, I also receive untraited dragons consecutively. It occurs far more frequently than eight consecutive Hail dragons.
But this is intriguing and shows how bias can alter our perception and numbers in either direction to support our beliefs. And why it’s important to have data from other (neutral) players. We’ve seen a lot of theories recently and over the years with DV. They’re always fascinating, but players should take these ideas with a pinch (or grain) of salt and test it out in their own parks. I think this is what makes DV so special and alluring, and why players become so deeply involved.

I don’t think the percentage for untraited dragons has increased. It’s always seemed slightly higher than 25%, but not by much. The problem is someone assumed it was 25% for each parent, 25% for the alignment, and 25% no trait. Then, as you said, this was passed on as facts, and now it’s written in DV communities in their help and FAQ sections. So now everyone thinks 25% is the truth. This isn’t the first time this has happened, and it’s always frustrating when it occurs.
To me, the solution isn’t to find out the exact untraited percentage, or to make assumptions about what’s affecting the percentage. The answer is to see if Deca will allow players to add or remove a trait at the Rift Breeding Cave.
My head tells me that as equal odds for 4 outcomes feels vaguely close enough and is the simplest possible solution the idea probably arose in multiple places simultaneously.
My heart tells me that the someone is me. I definitely argued in the first days of the rift for it being a reasonable hypothesis to start with in the absence of data... Which given enough time without debunking eventually ossifies into Fact™️. So... err, I'd like to issue an inherently uncertain sorry for if it was my fault.
Speaking of untraited dragons, I Rift bred an untraited Piscean today. The traditional cycle of excitement of the right egg followed by realisation and disappointment ensued. It feels like the game is laughing at you, hurts a little every time. I'd love to see it changed.
You’re incredibly gracious, Arkynos! ❤️ But I seriously doubt it was you who brought the 25% theory into the DV realm. When I say 'someone', I’m not implying one person, rather the generic / universal 'someone'. Players made guesses, then eventually someone(s) presented it as factual without testing it, because it seemed logical. There are four options, so why wouldn’t the percentage be 25% each.
It’s nobody’s fault. This is just the way theories and ideas are passed on, and how assumptions become adopted facts.

A DV break is a good thing, but from a selfish perspective, it’s always difficult for me to let go of players. It’s like losing a friend. I dearly hope you enjoyed your stay. It has been wonderful having you aboard and hopefully you’ll find your way back to DragonVale and to us. DV has frustrating moments, so playing it more casually as an aside, or putting it away for a while (in the top drawer, of course) can help.
You brought life to the Forum when it was dead and post-less during the tumbleweed arid days. And you always brought colour and joy with your terrific sense of humour. We could not have asked for anything more. You will be missed by all. G’luck and koalas with your future endeavours. And please don’t wander too far away. We will be here, awaiting your triumphant return!

Sorry to see you go Obijuan. I’ve enjoyed your posts and the conversations you brought up. Even if we didn’t always agree on everything I really liked talking about it and thought it was really cool you didn’t shy away from what you thought.
I seriously think if you did the strategy that adlerist posted it would work. Collect etherium, buy mystery eggs, and only breed in the Vale. There doesn’t seem to be problems breeding in the Vale, so remove the annoying part and stop breeding in the Rift. The mystery eggs will get you LOTS of traited dragons you don’t have. That’s how I’ve gotten many of them. But I totally get how it’s easy to get burnt out with the game and how irritating it can be at times too. Koala and I hope to see you around soon!
It’s time we moved on from the theories, percentages, and Rift discussions. If players want to continue the conversation on The Rift thread, that would be perfect. But it’s now veered way off-topic for the event thread (I apologise for significantly contributing to this). Members who are looking for information about the event aren’t finding it with 2-3 pages about theories, guesses, breeding and cloning percentages, Rift odds, and Rift trait percentages (again, sorry for adding to this). It’s wonderful to have these conversations, and by all means, I’m not saying members should stop, just continue it on the Rift thread. Cheers!

The latest DV update has been released on iOS and Android. Get it while it’s hot!
No details on what the update includes. If Deca lets us know, I’ll inform everyone. Happy Updating!

Maybe my park is in some kind of weird loop. Yesterday I had 8 Hails in a row (in Rift, 6 traited and 2 not), then today I had 4 Omens in a row (3 traited, 1 not) while breeding Omen+Water. Possible, but definitely not normal. Is it me? Is it the matrix? Am I hitting ‘retry’ too fast?

My official whine 🍷. I have been trying for a rifted Dusk. So far I have bred 3 unrifted Dusks. I am looking for a falling star to wish upon to grant my wish. 🌌🌠

Try aligning at least one of the breeding dragons with the daily Rift element. I’m sure there’s no real significance to this, but it can’t hurt!

Same here. Got excited today when I saw Dusk pop up - only to realize it wasn’t trained. I yelled out loud at the game lol 😆

It’s definitely normal. I’m getting a lot of Omens too because you’re cloning Omen since it’s in the breeding combo and it’s cloning percentage is higher.
It doesn’t seem like the speed you press Retry has anything to do with it, this was discussed earlier.

Thank you, but I’m not gone yet. I just need to back off from the game’s daily grind for a bit. I’m on the fringe of the type of people who can successfully play DragonVale (read: not terribly patient).
Another struggle I have witnessed personally is my daughter’s attempts to breed an Eldritch dragon. She tried in the co-op cave for almost three MONTHS with no success and only finally got one in today’s daily reward. This is more of a feeling of relief that the ordeal is over than a feeling of accomplishment or gratification. And how many other dragons did she miss out on during the Eldritch marathon? Eldritch is a four element dragon with a vanishingly low breeding percentage. If I remember correctly it serves as a base for several enhancement dragons. Why does it need to be so hard to get?
I expect higher level dragons to be more difficult to breed. That’s just the nature of the game. But I think it has been carried too far. This is a game and a hobby, not a profession. The breeding percentages need to be set higher and the dragons need to be available more often or for longer periods of time than just one event per year. The higher level dragons should be more easily attainable for all players. Not easy, but easier. It “feels” like the life is being choked out of the game.

I have a question. The element Pylons are in the market but we can’t buy any if we own one, however in the past we could have more than one. I have 15-30 Light, Earth, Water, Cold, and Fire Pylons, but only one of the Air, Dark, Lightning, Metal, and Plant Pylons. It’s really lopsided. Half of my element islands can use the Pylons as the main deco and the other half can’t. ☹️
adlerist can the cap be removed so we can have equal amounts of all the Pylons? That would be great! Thank you!

I second this! It would be great if the limit can be removed on the pylons. I’d love to have an even number of each. I’ve been waiting for them to come back because I forgot to buy them during decorator week and not we can’t even buy them.

What I am doing is giving up my smoking Dragonarium. It’s a hard decision to make after all these years, but my Dragonarium will live longer this way. Visitors will have to get used to seeing it wrapped up in nicotine patches for a while. It will be a bit like many of the buildings you see Europe wrapped up in scaffolding.

I asked Deca to raise the limit on the Pylons at the start of the event, since they previously removed the limit for some of the Pylons, then reinstated the cap with this event. They asked if there was a reason why players would want more than one. I told them the Pylons are splendid decorations and many players have multiples of some, but only one of others, creating an imbalance. Also, it’s something else players can spend their event currency on.
Never heard back, so I’ll ask Deca again, and give the reasons you stated for why players would want more than one. Thank you for the reasons!
