This post is designed to give you a brief overview of the game and how it works.
Bots - This is the essence of the game. You can buy the 6 pure element bots: Builder, Miner, Performer, Nature, Repair and Science at various levels of the game and then combine them in the Breeding Lab (available at Level 7) to make the hybrid and the rare bots. The object of the game, if it can be said to have an object, is to collect all the different types available. A thread on breeding all the bots, updated as limiteds and rares are added, can be found at dragonvale-tips.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=gzgeneral&action=display&thread=306
All of the bots, ordered by limited, rare and then by earnings are below.
Zones - Zones are where your bots live, and they currently come in 7 flavours: Building, Mining, Performance, Nature, Repair, Science and the only rare zone, Astro. Hybrid bots can live in the zone of any element that they are made of. (Beat Bot contains Builder and Performer, and can live in either of these zones.)
The zones have a cap on the number of bots they can hold and they amount of robux they can collect. The speed at which they collect robux is dependent on the earning potential of the bots it houses, which is set by type, level and any bonuses the bot may have accrued.
Robux - Robux are the currency of Gizmonauts. Your bots earn them in their zones and you collect them by tapping on the zone when the treasure chest icon appears there. You can also get bonus Robux when you visit people in your friends list. 3 zones at each friends park will have a Robux Icon, and tapping on that will collect the coins. The amount you collect is dependent on what level you are. This is reset for your friends parks at midnight so you can visit them all every day.
Robux are used to make all the changes in your outpost apart from buying hybrid bots. You use them to buy zones, buy pure element bots to place in them, clear obstacles, buy decorations, make snax, buy more grids to increase your pakr and enter competitions in the battle arena.
Crystals - These are the most valuable commodity at your outpost, because there are some things that can't be bought with robux. You get crystals by buying them for real money in the Market, completing some goals and receiving them as gifts from friends. You also have 3 crystals which you can gift to other friends (more on this below).
The most important use of Crystals at the moment is increasing the number of slots available in the Baby Bot Station. 10 Crystals to buy your 2nd, 25 to buy your 3rd and 50 to buy your 4th.
You can also use them to hasten breeding, building, making snax and the interval waiting period of the Battle Arena. All these things can be sped up by your fellow players so it's not generally a good use of your Crystals. The one thing visitors can't speed up is the Baby Bot Station, so possibly this is where you want to spend some.
You can also buy things with crystals, like bots and accessories, but all the bots can be bred and the accessories can be found when clearing your Outpost or won as bonus prizes at the Battle Arena.
Friends - You will notice a friends tab at the bottom of the left screen. Clicking on that allows you to visit friends outposts where you will be able to collect bonus robux (as above) but you will also be able to speed up processes that take time: the Breeding Lab, building zones, creating snax, waiting for the Battle Arena to reset. The only thing you can't speed up is the incubation time in the Baby Bot Station. The amount of time saved is 25% of the total time of the process minus time already sped up and it is cumulative so that more than one can friend can speed up a process and/or the same friend can speed it up on successive days. 1st time saves 25%, 2nd time saves 18.75% (25% of the remaining 75%), 3rd time saves 14.0625% (25% of the remaining 56.25%), 4th time saves 10.546875% (25% of the remaining 42.1875%) and 5th time saves 7.9101562% (25% of the remaining 31.640625%). So 5 clicks on a process will speed it up by 76.2695312%
In the Friends screen there is also a little tab at the bottom left that shows a number next to a little white box with blue ribbon. This tells you how many gifts you have left to give today. You can give a Crystal to 3 people in your list by tapping the Gift button next to your neighbors' name, and this is not taken from your cache of Crystals, but comes from thin air (hence Free Gift). This is also reloaded at midnight every day, and if you can find a few friends to play with then consistently exchanging gems is a good way to collect this precious resource.
Clearing your Outpost - Eliminating trees and rocks from your outpost is a good way to earn XP which will help you level up. While clearing you may also find gizmos, i.e. upgraded tools that will help in the Battle Arena, give you a boost in earning, or just look cool. Clearing trees, rocks and such unlocks the same type of decorating item in the market. No need to try to work around them, you can clear and then replace.
Forum Friends - Finding a group of people that you can talk to for help, support and advice is so very important. Whether it be here or somewhere else, please find a place where you can talk about the game and share your experiences. It's certainly one of the most rewarding aspects of playing.
Goals - A great way to earn food, robux, XP and crystals. These will help you by prompting you with what you need to do to progress in the game. They can be accessed from the Goals Tab which is at the bottom right of the screen.
Bonus Goals - They also have Bonus Goals which reward you for doing things again: "Buy or breed and deploy another Spray Bot." for example. They reset every 2 hours and at midnight local time (so you can do your bonus goals at 11:55pm then do them again 5 minutes later) and there are 3 types: Bot Goal (to deploy a bot or level one up), Build Goal (Build or upgrade a Zone, Build or upgrade a Snax Shack/Joint/Shop or Buy a Decoration) and a Crystal Goal (Gift a friend a Crystal, Win a Battle or Expand your Outpost). Here's a couple of ways to make the most of them:
Expanding your Outpost - You get the option to buy 3 square parcels of land to add on to your outpost as the game progresses. These can be placed in almost any position, as long as they connect along at least one edge to your existing outpost and aren't too close to a floating piece of space flotsam or an asteroid. This means your eventual outpost can, and will, look entirely different to everyone else's. The cost for the grids goes up as you level up in the game.
Battle Arena - Available at Level 10, it allows 2 of your robots to battle against 2 game selected robots. Choose high level robots equipped with gizmos that have battle boosts. Rewards consist of Robux, snax, xp and the occasional new tool for your bots. Each win also earns a 10% boost for the two bots that won, up to a cap of +100%. The entry fee to fight goes up as your level increases in the game.
The nuances of the battle arena are many, and still being worked out. We are compiling everything we know in the following thread. dragonvale-tips.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=gzgeneral&action=display&thread=352
Gizmos - Once your bot reaches Level 5 there are extras that can be added to them that seemed to fit in 1 of 3 categories: Earning, Battle or Decorative. Decorative are just that, and they have released limited gizmos for Halloween and Christmas with more limited gizmos expected in the future. Earning Gizmos add 10% to the earnings of your Bots. Battle Gizmos let your bots perform better in the Battle Arena in a number of different ways (Melee, Ranged, Speed, Armour, etc).
Each Bot has it's own unique set of Gizmos, and they can be made available to your bots in 1 of 3 ways: Found under obstacles when clearing your Outpost, won as a bonus in the Battle Arena, and bought for crystals costing from 10 and up. When you have an item to use, it is available to all bots of that type.
Important Gizmos
Red Disc for Grinder - Battle - Makes him a beast in the Battle Arena.
Income Boosts for high earning bots in the Large Cap habitats, Miner and Nature. See below.
Max Earnings for your Park
As you move up in Levels everything becomes more expensive at your Outpost. New decorations, bots, zones cost more, and the cost of new tiles and entering the Battle Arena keeps increasing. Not to mention all that food you're going to need to grow. The best way to earn Robux is to have high capacity zones and have fast earning bots in them.
Larger Miner Zone - 75 000 Capacity - 3 Bots
Carrier Level 15 - 46 coins/min - 97 coins/min with 100% battle boost + 10% Nail Gun boost. 3 Carriers will max out zone in 4 hours 20 mins.
Rock Level 15 - 44 coins/min - 92 coins/min with 100% battle boost + 10% Acoustic Guitar boost
Floodlight Level 15 - 41 coins/min - 86 coins/min with 100% battle boost + 10% Utility Light boost
Large Nature Zone - 50 000 Capacity - 3 Bots
Spray Level 15 - 52 coins/min - 109 coins/min with 100% battle boost + 10% Fertiliser boost. 3 Sprays will max out zone in 2 hours 32 mins.
Aloe Level 15 - 49 coins/min - 103 coins/min with 100% battle boost + 10% Pretty Flower boost.
Flower Level 15 - 44 coins/min - 92 coins/min with 100% battle boost + 10% Rose boost.
Avatars
When you select the Friends button to gift crystals or visit a friends park you will see a Tab on the left of the screen marked AVATARS. Selecting this tab will show you a grid of available avatars for you to use. Initially you only have the Avatars for the pure element Bots, but as you breed hybrids, these avatars get unlocked for you to use. There are also a series of goals to be completed that will unlock special Avatars (Win 50 Fights, Gift 60 Crystals, Breed 75 Bots, etc) you can check on your progress of these avatars by clicking on any of them. (Note: The Gluttonous Bots Avatar says you need to feed 5 Bots to Max Level, but you actually need 10. The Receive 100 Crystals from Friends is called the Consolation Prize, which is actually the name of the Lose 25 Fights avatar. We expect these errors to be fixed in a future update.)

Here's a couple of ways to make the most of them:
- Gift a Friend a Crystal - Reward: 1 Crystal.
This one comes up regularly, often multiple times the same day. If you gift your first crystal and claim this reward, and hold on to your other two, it is possible that you will get this reward again during the day, and get the bonus multiple times in the one 24 hour period. - Expand your Outpost - Reward: 1 Crystal.
The tip here is NOT to expand your Outpost the second you go up a Level. If you can wait patiently for this Bonus Goal to come along you will be paid a Crystal for something you were going to do anyway. And in connection with the waiting to gift a friend goal, it will lesson the chance you will run out of crystal goals in a single 24 hour period if you have the time to check in multiple times a day. - Build another Snax Joint - Reward: XP and/or Food and/or Robux
This one comes up everytime you don't have any free zones to build and you have less than the max available. So feel free to buy one, collect the XP and immediately sell it. The XP earned seems to be connected to what level you are. You might lose some Robux on the deal at some of the levels, but leveling up is a reasonable trade off. And it's faster and generally cheaper then building zones or some of the pricier decorations. You must remember to build your new zone as soon as you level up, else your Build Goal will be a randomly picked zone. - Build a Builder Zone - Reward: XP and/or Food and/or Robux
This one will come up if you have a Zone available to be used AND you don't have a Builder Zone. You simply build it for 1000 Robux, collect the reward and then sell it for 500 Robux. It is by far the cheapest way to complete the Build Goal but there is a catch. It takes 1 hour to build the habitat. So you need to check in twice as often (or spend a crystal to speed up the build time, but that is a waste of resources). The 2 hour timer for resetting your goals starts when you complete the first one, so if you don't check in after you've started building your habitat to complete it AFTER one hour has passed to finish building it, but BEFORE two hours has passed and the goals reset, you have essentially wasted a goal. There is a second catch, which is that you must always have a vacant zone to allow it to ask you to build one, so you are losing out on earnings. - Deploy a Builder Bot - Reward: XP and/or Food and/or Robux
This works like the Build a Builder Zone loophole, and works with it. Once you have 1 of each bot in play, aside from Astrobot, you can sell off all your Builder Bots so you will get prompted to deploy one of those every 2 hours. It takes 10 seconds to deploy, collect the reward and then sell it again to do it again when the goals reset. - Level up a Bot - Reward: XP and/or Food and/or Robux
If you have 2 of every bot in play you will no longer be prompted to breed any bots. Instead you will be prompted to feed one to level it up. So essentially, breed 2 of every bot and this is the only Bot Bonus Goal you will get. This is a good alternative to the Deploy a Builder Bot goal as it has the same consistency and it allows you to keep some Builder Bots on display.
Expanding your Outpost - You get the option to buy 3 square parcels of land to add on to your outpost as the game progresses. These can be placed in almost any position, as long as they connect along at least one edge to your existing outpost and aren't too close to a floating piece of space flotsam or an asteroid.
