drella, If you have just started, you have the ability to send three gems per day. One to each of three friends. As you progress in the game, you get the opportunity to buy a dragonsai tree. This allows you to give three extra gems. At one point in the past they had a shrub that allowed you to send one extra gem. This was a "free" gift hwich took your total gems you could give to 4 without the tree, or 7 with the tree. They also had a "treatery" at one point as a prize. This allowed you to give treats to three friends. THey can be the same or different as the friends you give treats to.
None of this is of any direct benefit to you. Your friend gets the benefit. However, friends who get gifts tend to return them, so the net result is that by giving stuff away, you get gifts (gems and treats are collectively called gifts) in return.
Treats are self explanatory. You feed them to your dragons. They get bigger and earn you more cash. The treats you get from friends are treats you don't have to buy so they are a big advantage.
Gems are the most valuable currency in the park. You can use them to speed things up. There are also things you can only get by spending gems. Chief among them are upgrades to your nursery, but there are lots of other valuable things too. Having a good circle of friends who send you gems daily can make make it much easier to get these items. I would advise you not to speed up food. Or breeding, though there are times when a gem spent just before bedtime can be a gem well spent. You should be easily be able to get 6 gems everyday from friends. Sometimes more as there are people who will send you a gem without expecting one in return.

Actually I think you have it backwards. I know in my case, it was my children who got me into this game. They wanted me to play so I could send them gems. Several years later...
What is this whole sending gems, sending treats, sending gifts thing and how does it work?

Or your Facebook info if you are on a kindle, as drella is. But only do that if you want your Facebook to be openly shared. That is of course personal opinion.

Also, if you send an gem toThe Great Nogard he will return it. I think you can only do this at low levels, so see how you go.
I got suckered into the game by my wife and No. 2 daughter. At one point the whole family were playing, but now it is just me.

Just so you know, the Tips and Tricks thread has a table of contents in the first post. That will take you to the various points where dragons and things were first introduced to the game. As you discover things you can vista the part of that thread where they started to read up how we learned about these things when they first appeared.

Beeing quite new here I wonder; do you have a better chance to win a competition of this group if you know the most prominent members, the history and stories of the group and - as onion on the salmon - mention one or two when you compete?

Not necessarily, but if you capitalise on a funny in joke of the forum, it feels more personal and we like it more (maybe) than other jokes. I assume your talking to the Princess Leia joke in the Caption competition, right!?

A query re this; fairly often folk have a comment in their sig or the profile box, along the lines of ' GC challenges will be unfriended'; what is a 'GC challenge'? Being really new to the online forum/games world I don't understand ... Ta!

I am pretty sure there's only one. And that would be me. GameCentre has the ability to set challenges for friends within the GameCentre app. Sadly that "feature" has been used by some unscrupulous developers as a stealth marketing ploy. I was caught by one a couple of years ago. I installed and tried a game when I received a challenge. The game immediately started sending out challenges to everyone in my friends list without my knowledge let alone my consent. As soon as I realised I deleted the game then spent the next few weeks apologizing to people. Luckily my friends list was not as extensive as it is now.
As far as I am concerned this behavior is a cyber attack similar to a Trojan. If I receive a challenge I immediately decline AND unfriend the challenger on the assumption it is one of these attacks. The message in my sig is a warning to people not to send me a manual challenge as it will be treated the same way.

Nice to know the story behind that, it kind of confused me! I didn't realise they could do that. Nice to know for the future!
