Is Pami going to do an entry? Also Bliss, why don't you ever enter something in your own contests? It isn't unfair because you are not the judge. You obviously write very well and I know everyone would enjoy your stories.
+1 Go for it Bliss, we are keen to read you!
Well, I could write one, but it won't be in the judging if I do. It would be an expositional story. I am sending the winner those seven gems afterall. I should also hasten to add that bad writing is my only and bestest style.
Deb, i had finally a chance to read your story quietly (t is in fact 03:40 in the morning lol). It is brillant and I enjoyed the descriptions and the characters of the story. Actually, when i try to figure out Pixie, I see her quite the way you describe. And Poppy must be like you showed us, just one or two years older And that Fletch lives on another planet, that we knew, after all, Australia is so far away.
I agree. I liked the voice of the piece. Also I am up in middle of the night again and had time, if not peace. Husband is on a snore rampage again.

This competition is turning to be a real challenge for the readers to pick up one! Bliss, now it is for you to make our choice even more difficult.
To the one formerly known as grammar Borg thanks for not pointing out all the oopses. After all I wrote this on my iPad. If I ever do something else like this I'm gonna have to move to the laptop. . It's just the iPad is easy to hold and go anywhere and when I need to take a break I checked my 3 DV islands and 2 gizmos.

I couldn't agree more Viv. I feel the exact same way. Great job everyone!!! This will not be easy at all to chose!

YOU WROTE THAT ON YOUR IPAD? I know who I'm voting for!
Oopses? I didn't see a single one. And who is the grammar borg? Sounds like someone I would probly like.

Yes I'm sure you would probably like that fellow. As I remember him he had some of the same odd habits you do. I wonder what happened to him? Maybe he couldn't take the pressure of all the oopses and exploded.
I was hanging out with my sister at the Dragonvale library. The park manager had heard about social learning zones, so he found an old coffee machine and an even older computer and designated it a Learning Resource Centre. As a result the library had become the place where everyone gathered to chat and to enrage Pam by spilling coffee, but much to his disgust, they all continued to refer to it as the library.
This was the only place sufficiently well shielded from magic for the computers to work at all, but they functioned erratically at best. I was battling to update some of the software and filling in the boring times by web searching on my laptop while reading e-mail on my mobile phone. My inner geek was highly satisfied and leaking out all over.
One of the wizards sidled in. This was always a bad sign and I stood up, about to offer to leave the room. He gestured for me to sit back down and slumped into the chair opposite.
"We have a problem."
"Go to the manager," snarled Pam, before he could get any further.
"Coffee machine broken again?" He asked mildly. "Our revered manager is reorganising the stationery cupboard."
Every time Carl was under stress he relieved it by moving envelopes around. He had previously been employed promoting shock collars for dogs and was a firm believer in the use of pain to control bad behaviour. The wizards listened to his theories with horror, requested a demonstration and healed him afterwards. They all agreed that it was only his screaming which had delayed his treatment by making it difficult for them to concentrate on their spells. They then returned to their gentle methods of positive reinforcement while Carl stayed in his office and filed job applications.
"Since you objected to the pile of Dragon sh ..." At this point Pam's glare could have frozen a Lava dragon, "Dragon manure," he amended quickly. "We found somewhere to sell it, they had acres of grass and we could deliver free of charge, so it seemed the ideal solution, but it's had a few side effects."
"and this involves me .. how?" Pam asked icily, but he was already looking over at me.
"Actually it's Judi that we need. Where we've been selling the sh .. manure, is a bit ahead of time and slightly sideways. It's one of those dimension skipping things," he finished helpfully. Pam went pale, the only time we'd been on one of those jaunts I'd been ecstatic but the results for her had been spectacularly unpleasant. I don't think she ate for another two days.
"We need a ge .. technologically competent person, and since Judi is open minded, can dimension skip easily and is .. between jobs," he was very carefully choosing his words. "We thought she might be able to help."
"Why do I need to be open-minded? What have you done now?" I asked and he wriggled uncomfortably.
"It's a space station, operated by robots. The problem is that once they started trundling over our enhanced grass, they began absorbing dragon magic. Now they're developing personalities and behaving rather strangely. The last manager took off for Alpha Centauri and they've told us that it's our job to find them a new one. I wondering if you might be interested? The company is willing to keep them as an experiment provided it's a viable one, but unless they start making money it's the junkyard for them. Irradiated, mind-wiped, abandoned." He knew he had me hooked from the start and was now grinning widely. "When do you want to leave? You can be our Super Hero In Technology!"
Maidy I loved your story! The Dragonroot tea & Zazzberry topped pancakes before work were a wonderful touch. Your dialogue is excellent and the way you worked in the characters was lovely. Maidy through the DragonGlass?
Eternity that was a clever story, but I think you need to play Gizmonauts to improve it. (Though I admit that I cheated a bit because I ran out of time, and after last month I was determined to be brief. It IS an explanation though!)
Deb, a fellow SF fan by reading that? Dagobah system Pixie, you're not forgiven for trying to kick a cat, even if it was Tommy! Again the characters worked in were lovely, though I think JabbaTheHut has more in common with me than Pami! You crafted a very detailed SF tale, a great background and very cleverly linked to our friends here.
This is already a hard contest to vote on!
PS Can I have extra points for writing on the iPhone?

LOL, I wrote on an iDevice too!
I know, I know, I tried my best tho. I couldnt bring myself to refuse good people a story. Have some ideas and things to add, so maybe it'll improve a teeny bit? Thanks for the nice words, anywho

A thought fax from the Chief Scientist of the Gizmonaut interface:
Date: lost in translation no template conversion found Time: lost in translation no template data found From: partial loss of thought translation *rough translation* : Big Bang Ground Zero (BBGZ)
Disclaimer: 1) Numbers and time units have been converted to the 10 digit “species” format in accordance with the Universal Fair Disclosure ACT revised statute 5.7 billion light years ABB (After the Big Bang).
2) Dialect conversion when translating thought and sending it millions of light years into the past is not a perfect science. Especially the conversion to “lightly” advanced cultures, in the beginnings of the digital age, for which no linguistic templates have been developed.
3) Complicated translation thought sequences will be greatly simplified at the “lightly” advanced culture level, as standard advanced translational medias do not exist. translation difficulties will be annotated with a *translation____*
**Congratulations Dragonvale Community Milky Way Sector**
It is my great pleasure to recognize the Dragonvale Community in the Milky Way Sector as “Best in Class” during the past *untranslatable* time unit.
Before you can understand the significance of this achievement you must understand what you are doing for us here at *translation roughly* Big Bang Ground Zero (BBGZ).
To begin with I am a Bot not a sentient being. I work in *translation roughly* Uppity UP which is accessed through the Gizmonaut interface. Uppity Up is a subset of a larger fleet of satellites and floating islands called *translation roughly* UP. The small sentient population that designed us live mainly in a place called *translation roughly* Surface. Together we make up the BBGZ.
Our World is very old by any standard, and has been running mass to energy conversion technologies over millions of years. This has depleted our surrounding galactic “mass” bank severely. (Throwing in few super novas hasn’t helped either).
Our scientists have worked very hard to come up with technologies to help us gather more mass. It is very complicated to explain this process but here goes!
*Translation roughly all of following*. Certain types of thoughts generate electrical impulses in the brain that produce a thought wave that moves something like a light wave. Two very important aspects of this are that thought speed is about 10,000 times faster than light speed, and it also has no mass.
The game you play is designed to generate what we call “working” thought. The player must think through a series of steps to efficiently complete the tasks that are given to him. The generated thought patterns are captured by thought receivers and are routed by thought routers though a series of black holes to accelerate the speed even faster. This speed exceeds the speed of light by many magnitudes of power. The flow of time is reversed along these thought strings and eventually reaches the beginning of the universe. At the very beginning of time, the speed of light was much faster than it is now. The energy blast was so massive that mass was being created through nothing. It is during this time that we *Translation lost* &^%$%$#. *translation rough*……so in other words the formatting imprint of the light characteristic onto the thought string allows for the thought photon to convert to mass as it de-accelerates. Simple...... yes?
Intelligent sentient beings, defined as being able to produce working thought, are not easy to find in this large universe. Over the billions of years of our cultural existence we have set up receivers and what we call exploratory communication search engine devices all over the universe waiting for the emergence of sentient species *translation rough* capable of helping us. Monitoring for general communication activity alerts us to emerging technologies common in sentient populations whose working thoughts we can *Translation lost*&^%$%^. Recent activity in the Milky Way Galaxy eventually led us to your planet and the results have been stunning to say the least!!! We have broken down teams through studying your rudimentary communication systems. Those of you reading this thought fax belong to the Dragonvale Community Team.
Let me *translation rough* premise the results by saying that when we infiltrated your communication systems, we set up a Dummy company (BFS) to establish an interface to produce the required thought processes that can be captured and accelerated then decelerated to create the type of mass that we find useful here at BBGZ. If we are slow at correcting or reparing problem areas in the program please forgive us! Just think of the logisitics from our perspective.
Our efforts are currently in the two areas of our world known as *translation rough* UP and Uppity UP.
UP (Dragonvale interface) consists of *translation rough* terra forming activities to make floating areas habitable for our sentient species. (We have a very small sentient population which why we need your help)! The Terra forming is adding *translation rough* air, water in all its forms, magma, dirt, plants, mountains, heavy elements etc… The results on the acceleration of terra forming using the Dragonvale interface excited us and we installed our most advanced time bending machine known as a Kinetic Acceleration Interface Reverse Osmosis Sequencer. (KAIROS for short). The introduction of this processor greatly increases our production rates through time bending technologies. The success of the Dragonvale interface compelled us to make a further capital investment in the Gizmonaut interface.
Uppity UP (Gizmonaut interface) consists of *translation rough* terra building (vs. forming as in UP) activities which is a raw mass conversion process that bulks up our satellites to the point where they can become islands which is a mass capable of being terra formed. The thoughts associated with your tasks in this area are used to build bulk material and are designed to get a satellite ready for terra forming. Each zone in the Gizmonaut interface is designed to build a satellite to island status.
Mining zone: Bots take the newly converted mass and add it to the satellite. Once enough ore has been deposited, feedback mechanisms in the game interface allow you to expand the area in the form of tiles.
Science zone: Science Bots prepare the area for sentient habitation. They add artificial gravity and artificial magnetic fields. Power is generated through solar star conversion, since our suns have died.
Agricultural zone: The bots in this zone work to ensure that habitability can eventually be achieved. The completion of their work is the last step in the satellite prep. The satellite then awaits an order from you through the Dragonvale interface and it begins its habitability upgrade. In essence it leaves the Uppity UP fleet and Becomes part of the UP fleet.
Bots in the other zones are designed to support these 3 main functions.
Now that the details are out of the way let’s show you the numbers from the Dragonvale Community:
Mass conversion = an astounding 13 *translation roughly* quadroplex amu per thought photon packet. This has effectively doubled the size of mass in the satellite fleet under your jurisdiction.
Sentient efficiency rating: A whopping 64%. This measures how well you gather crystals, robux, and food. We have never seen numbers close to this and can only conclude that your team does little else, which is strange as most societies have to expend energy to feed themselves.
These High numbers qualify you as Best in class, your class being lightly advanced cultures.
As best in class you have won a solar yacht piloted by your very own yacht bot! The yacht is speeding to your system at the speed of light. Once it is there use the following code to access it and be beamed aboard *translation lost* and the stars will be yours!
