And can someone explain how to get enough treats for level 20 dragons without using gems? I've been playing for over a year and a half, and I've managed all level 15 dragons and one level 20 dragon, but the level 20 dragon took every last treat I had been saving up for the past two months. Ouch.
Hi and welcome Alana. The secret is patience. And lots of epic dragons. I have an island full of Rainbows of various types, and another full of Suns (mostly Solstice and Solar Eclipse). I earn around 60M DC per day, and it pretty much all goes into food. It is theoretically possible to earn more with some of the higher earning "normal" dragons, but you have to clear the habitats so often it quickly becomes tedious. I never sell off a high earning Epic. They all go into DC production. At need I will store lesser dragons and habitats so I can increase my Rainbow count. Note that I don't breed for the rainbows deliberately. The loss of income from breeding two DRs together takes a LONG time to make up. However, I mostly choose my breeds so that it is possible to get one as a fail.
I can, if I avoid any other purchases, manage raising one L20 per week. I mostly grow beanstalks. 11 farms worth every day or two. At times I also use pumpermelons and dragonfruit when income is down or when i cannot get back to my park soon.
If you poke about the site, you will come across several discussions on how to maximise income. Please feel free to add your own tips to the mix.

Hello,
So I started about a year ago once there were already metal dragons around the time the jade dragon was introduced. My friend had almost every dragon at that time so my goal was to catch him. I found it very daunting trying to get 2 of every dragon when I lacked other dragons so I found it easier to shoot for 1 of each dragon before I go for doubles. With this goal I fell a little behind getting 2 of the limited time dragons but it allowed me to catch up in getting all the dragons. I need 12 more at this point. And all of my dragons are level 15. So how do you start now... Very simple in my opinion. Just take it one dragon at a time and eventually (a year later) you can catch up.

Gem friends are full. But I love seeing new parks!
Still need: cyclops, snowy silver, arbor, bouquet, dream, sprout

I have played these types of games before so appreciate the nostalgia when you think about your early days.
Allow me to take you back in time, I started playing yesterday , the graphics are enough to keep me going for now. I like dragons too which I guess helps
I have an earth(1) fire(2) and plant (3) habitat, with inhabitant numbers in brackets. I am currently building a cold habitat, and am saving up for the basic cold egg (18k/30k) i have my earth basic and flower dragon in breeding cave, simply because flower dragon is my only hybrid and my earth dragon is my newest addition. There's one egg in my hatchery which is a fire/earth hybrid with 6hours left and at the moment 2 empty spots in hatchery as I'm still acing for cold egg.
At the moment everything has at least 6hours on it. I'm just collecting dc from my habitats until I have 30k for cold egg.
I have added a few friends for the gem trade as I know that will probably be handy later on, visiting a level 20 with dragons and rainbows here there any everywhere looks insane and verging on impossible. I can only imagine what a 45+ may look like.
Anyway for now I will wait until I can start hatching my cold dragon

Enjoy it! After a year or two you'll be remembering this time fondly like the rest of us.

The beginning of this game can be both frustrating and REALLY fun.
Frustrating because you simply can't go for everything you are reading about and some of it is time limited so you just have to accept you won't get it this time around. But really fun because it actually matters what you breed for.
Early on, it makes a HUGE difference which dragons you breed (because even the failures, sold for money, can make a difference in what you do next) and you want to squirrel every gem aside to buy the second breeding ground and more hatching spots. I believe I ended up buying gems early on to do one of those because it was going to take too long otherwise and was severely slowing down my growth. I started playing in late October before the first BEB (Bring Everything Back -- not sure they are doing those again. Think they are going to do mini-BEBs of just specific categories of dragons instead). Didn't get to participate in a lot of the BEB because I was still building. (But I did manage a Panlong or two before it went away thankfully).
If you play on Apple, drop me a friend request and I'll send gems your way. I only have 2 regular gem partners and spread my gems around otherwise and like to help out players who are building up and really need the gems I don't need anything.

Well I registered on the forums. There's lots of time between breeding at the moment which I can use to read through threads and gain some insight, I just unlocked EPI so am contemplating buying that I used my gems to upgrade hatchery. But ATM have free spots open quite a lot there. I figure the EPI addition would help this. I have an empty moon habitat with a crystal in waiting so hopefully after that pops out I can start trying for a moon dragon
I currently find it a little overwhelming with the shear amount of dragons on offer, so at the moment every time I hatch a new dragon I breed it with another and see what pops out next. All I can do at the moment in between breeding times is farm food, which will obviously become useful when I figure out what the priority of dragons to level up.
Seems like a great game from what I've seen so far that I can see sinking plenty of hours into.

Moons and suns will come as fails looking for other stuff. If you still need basic dragons, I'd keep working on those. Perhaps with an eye toward what Gem dragons are coming up. And hold off on Epics. Bloodstone has a good spreadsheet of upcoming dragons. Firework may be one you can reasonably get now. AS I recall it comes fairly easily. Oh but its lvl 14
You need Fire and Air dragons to get it. Oh but AIr doesn't come until lvl 16 Well... if you are able to quickly level...
ETA: I see you are looking for a Quake. As I recall, early on that was a GREAT dragon. Good earning potential! (This was before they changed everything so I don't know how it compares now) Earth dragons were good because the habitats could hold a LOT of $$ and I didn't miss out on as much when I couldn't check frequently.

I'll work towards these, yes it would be useful to know what epic/limited come relatively easy. I use relative because I understand there's nothing easy about breeding specific dragons.. I have checked out blood stones post but as you say I need a few more levels yet. I suppose the firework dragon is around 4th July? I should have prerequisites before then to try for that.
P.S: Von. I saw your park whilst looking for party hats yesterday... Good God!

You'll get there faster than it seems! Just keep showing up. Keep hitting Breed. A little bit of planning what order to do things in may make things faster, that's all. Some luck in how fast you get dragons. (though I think mostly I hit "Normal" and not "fast" in getting what I'm aiming at.)
I think they should add a Nightmare dragon, lucid dream dragon, and a Day Dream dragon!
Hi am welcome. I'm sure you're not! They would all make good dragons for the dream habitat. I'm pretty sure we will see a nightmare for Halloween. Not sure when they would bring out the others though. And maybe a sleepwalking dragon. It could have a very interesting animation.

I believe I started playing Dragonvale around February or March of this year. At first, I played another dragon breeding game and wanted to play games similar to that one. I happened to stumble across DV, and now it's the only dragon breeding game I play.
It started off slowly at first due to the long dragon breeding and hatching times. Also, saving gems was an exercise in frustration sometimes because I didn't have any friends to trade with, nor did I spend any money on gems although the temptation was there. As I played along, however, I started to appreciate the game more and more, and now I play it everyday.
Right now, I'm pretty much at the beginning because I accidentally saved over my FB account, but that's OK. I can just enjoy another journey of building my park back up.

Hello, welcome to the forum! Yes I've played some other dragon breeding games and found many things that I didn't like in those. DV has been the only one that's stuck with me. I'm sorry to hear you had to start over, but for me personally the beginning of the game was the most memorable!

As a super new player (2 weeks!), I'll give my thoughts on getting started now. First, I was hooked right away. I don't know what it was, but after just one day I was all over the internet reading all of the things! Maybe that took some of the surprise out of the game, but I'm a planner. I like to set goals for myself and follow that path, and it's been working for me so far. I suppose that's one thing that makes starting now a lot different than when the game first started; there's just a lot more resources that tell you exactly how to do everything and get the dragons rather than being the ones who discover everything.
At first I was a bit worried about gems. I had planned on ignoring them, since I figured they were just for people who want to buy extras. But I quickly learned that they're pretty essential to moving forward in the game. I was definitely surprised at how easy they were to earn, too, compared to other games that use similar currency. I've already got all four spaces in my nursery and I'm only 9 gems from getting the Epic Breeding Island! I like how that makes the game feel more laid back, like I'm not missing out on anything. I just have to play regularly and I'll be rewarded.
Right now my goals are pretty basic: get one of each dragon and earn dragoncash and gems. I'm going for all of the basic hybrids at the moment rather than trying for some of the available epics or limiteds. I joined too late to have any hope of getting Ruby or Jade, so I'm not going to waste time attempting for them when I could be be getting others (and those 2 gems for breeding a new dragon!). I'm also stocking up on treats, but I'm not leveling up all of my dragons. For now I'm just feeding the ones I need for breeding and only to 4-8. I do have a few that I'm trying to get to level 11, since they'll be needed for some upcoming limited dragons (I wrote out a list from this forum!) that I want to try for when the time comes.
Basically, I'm just taking things slow and not worrying too much about building the most epic park in existence. That'll be later.

Hi and welcome to the forum! It's always nice to hear of others beginning experiences with the game. Personally, having clear set goals in this game is a great way to play, which is how I play. Although I will say that you've picked quite a hectic time to start playing what with the Firefly Festival going on. I'm sure you'll feel right at home with the rest of us DV nuts!

Thanks for the warm welcome! Yeah, I certainly joined at a crazy time. I think I was playing for three days and then all of a sudden there's a festival happening! But I like that it gives me something else to do in my park while I'm slowly starting up. Plus two awesome dragons for just going about normal gameplay is a nice bonus!

Thank you! I've already written out all of the dragons from the forecast and those are the ones I'm focused on leveling! I definitely did my homework.

pinkadot89, I'm a planner too. You look around here and might even find some of my early posts because one of the first things I did when I joined was going looking for people to talk strategy with before I messed it all up!

I have a feeling I would be totally overwhelmed if I didn't immediately come up with a plan. There's just so much to do in this game! Get all of the dragons! Get all of the islands! Level up all of the dragons! Level up the park! Collect eggs for display! Shrines! Aaah! One thing at a time...

Yes, planning is key if you wish to progress swiftly. May I also suggest you head over to the friends request threads for the platform you are playing; IOS or Android, to pick up some gem buddies and party hat swappers. You may also want to get the dragonsai tree; you can gift up to 6 gems per day, and receive them back too. When you visit other parks, you can collect more cash by clicking on the party hats. Don't worry about levelling up your park, that will come from playing and feeding your dragons. Shrines are for later on in the game. If you want to eventually do the shrine grind, I would advise that you feed your dragons up to level 10 or 15 before selling them. Boosts will be better for you at the start. Goood luck, and welcome to this wonderful friendly forum.
