Over these last two big events I have viewed the less-than-clear instructions in a different light; and treated them as a challenge to understand how to best use the event to my advantage.
With the Rift event, there were many gaps and scenarios that were used by resourceful gamers to maximise their gain. It was fun to figure out how to modify the playing regime to best effect, even if that meant increased participation and repetitive gameplay. The jeopardy of light versus dark gave an added unknown quality to the whole thing, adding to the excitement.
The Easter event was much more restrictive, with little room for strategy, apart from the double egg timing and obstacle clearing. Once I understood the event, there was nothing to do except sweep and grow treats and visit friends. I had to keep a careful count of eggs, but even so finished it early on Sunday (UK time). Once the daily collection was done, l had to wait for the reset. Which was a bit boring.
Having part-paid for the lost island, I would be loath to pay for any other special content in the near future.
Kindle park1: nearly all dragons are frolicking in their habitats! (A Thorny little problem to resolve...)
Smartphone park2: Geode, a dragon with rocks in! Still to breed 4 dragons...
I bought the island in both my parks. I was impatient and got it quite early in my main park, but waited until the last day in my second one.
I bought lots of magic during the light/dark event and I will no doubt buy more of whatever for the next one! I'm a sucker for DV (it's the only game I really play).

...Then there's Dragonvale. Until recently, it had an intriguing model of "free unless you are impatient" which clearly worked. ...
I wonder if this is a case of what used to work no longer working. Products go through life cycles. It could well be that what worked in the early days of the DV product works no longer.
I can see that as possibly being true. How many of us bought gems our first year but haven't bought any since? (raising my hand) DV players are most likely to purchase gems when they are new. Likely most of the people who are are ever going to play Dragonvale are already playing. With a smaller trickle of new purchasing players, and a large base of mature rarely-purchasing players who still expect new content, I can see why BFS might need to find new methods of producing revenue.
In another thread folk were recently talking about wanting the game to continue, and fearing that it would end. At the same time they were talking about not wanting to spend money on the island. I wonder if revenue from such things as islands is related to whether or not BFS ends the game soon.
[Note: I'm not saying that the life cycle of this product makes it necessary for the company to find additional sources of revenue. I honestly don't know. I'm just saying I think it could very well be possible.]
So, I purchased the island. I did want the extra space. However I bought it for more than that. I really want the game to continue. DragonVale is a small but consistently positive thing in my life every day. If it costs me $10 or $20 per year even though I'm not in need of gems anymore, it is worth it to me.

I have decided to make my island a new breeding lair. Still working on the decorating ideas. Oh and yes I ended up paying $14.total for the M.E. to win the island prize, I still am justifying my purchase as it was much less than any PlayStation or Xbox game.

I didn't buy the island. I only started playing in February of this year and the extra gems were a lot more useful to me as I don't spend money on them.
I bought the island, but I have mixed feelings about it. It just doesn't sit well with me that something as significant as an island would have to be purchased with money. Money purchases should feel optional.
I'm maxed out on gem trades, but always happy to connect for park appreciation purposes.
I didnt get the island as I couldn't be sure how much it would cost me. I also decided that I wouldn't pay more than £5 for the island but it worked out I would have had to pay at least double that. The lack of clarity around the event was stupid and counterproductive and definitely cost them sales. The event did prompt me to get DV friends and it's been great seeing other peoples parks so I think that was an extra reward :-)
After BFS gave us that utterly fantastic new Dragonarium today, I gotta say I feel even better about having paid get the Island. This company really does provide us with a great game / product -- one worth shelling out a few bucks for, in my opinion.
I bought the island. I love this game. I firmly believe people should get paid for their work and the employees producing the DV content deserve to be paid. I will continue to play and make purchases.
