Thank goodness! I'll be able to get the tower without cash outlay!
I have to say, though, I still need to think about whether I like the new Backflip enough to stay with the game. I don't mind tossing some cash their way (I've gotten plenty of enjoyment over the years), and I don't mind grinding to achieve rewards. But I thoroughly dislike grinding for rewards only to discover that I still have to pay cash at the end or planning from the beginning to pay cash but then discovering at the end that I could have gotten everything if I'd just spent some time grinding. Please, Backflip, just give me enough info to know how the event is going to work (they don't have to tell me outright, but structure these events so that I can figure it out with a little experimentation the way other games do). Their lack of transparency seems designed to heighten uncertainty and spur panic buying.

Really enjoyed lurking on this thread. Thanks to everyone for the very helpful strategies. I have been saving my gems, waiting for another Double Day, and at last thanks for the community here, I know now the double fireflies days are finally here!!
I love the new dragons and will be satisfied with the extra gems from my leftover fireflies, if I don't get the tower... I need almost 1100 more FF to reach the tower, so not sure what I will do yet.
I do hope everyone gets the new Dawn & Dust dragons because it will effect the Dragonarium Score.
koala to all!!

I have to say I can't understand the stress with it. I haven't really changed the way I play and I get what I get. I've managed both dragons and may or may not get the habitat. Absolutely no chance of the tower but I knew that from the start as I don't have time to spend hours getting every last firefly every day. Same with the island at Easter. But it's a game, I use it to relax after a long day in school with 26 kids, or a day at home with my children and I don't want to cause myself even more stress over it or it wouldn't be doing the job!
Hope everyone gets what they want anyway, Koala
I think most of the players who are feeling disillusioned here started playing before the first magic event was launched. Before that, it was possible to get every dragon and decoration to complete the collection. Even if we missed a limited dragon, we could probably wait for BEB to try for it again. There was a feeling that we didn't have to overexert ourselves in the game, and we didn't feel pressured to make purchases to get the dragons.
The magic events put a slightly different spin on the game. The objects and dragons from these events are exclusive, and are probably only available if we are willing to put in something extra. For the Rift Event, many of us bought and sold bushes until we got something resembling carpal tunnel syndrome from repetitive tapping. For the Magic Egg Event, this something extra was money; the Easter Island was impossible without it.
For this event, I think it's gems. It looks like only those players willing to spend up to 40 gems daily (30 using Skitch's method) can reasonably achieve the Twilight Tower without spending money. But gems are relatively rare too. I think it's unlikely anyone can earn 40 gems daily. Most of us got our current caches of gems by spending money for them, and my cache is shrinking from trying to earn fireflies from this event.
Okay, it looks like I went off on a tangent, but I think the point I was trying to make is: some players, especially those who started playing the game before the first magic event, were encouraged to believe that this was a game where you could earn everything if you were patient enough and played regularly. The magic events change that aspect of the game, which leads to the frustration these players feel.
Hi everyone, I just finished updating the wiki for now, but in case you didn't see:
Double Fireflies are back until the end of the August 3rd cycle ...60.5 hours worth of Double Fireflies ending at approximately 6:00:00 (UTC) on August 4th.
The Firefly Festival itself has a countdown to end at 16:30:00 (UTC) on August 4th which gives us 10.5 hours to collect regularly on the last day.
I.m having trouble getting into my parks - it gets stuck in a login to fb loop. There's an upgrade in Google play, installing that now, but as usual there's no sign of a Kindle upgrade yet... gggrrrr....
Don't sweat it.
The update didn't seem to have anything critical and should not in any way be necessary to enjoy the end of the event
After several goes at force stopping and clearing cache, it managed to load properly. So I'm happy again.
A question: once the tower has been achieved, is it worth using gems for speed-ups, as the ff return is less than the conversion rate at the end of the event?
Another: is it worth buying more than one giant habitat for the ff returns?
Kindle park1: nearly all dragons are frolicking in their habitats! (A Thorny little problem to resolve...)
Smartphone park2: Geode, a dragon with rocks in! Still to breed 4 dragons...

Your first question: after you achieve the tower, I think you should just return to your regular habits with regards to using gems for speed-ups, since you're essentially spending 5 gems to get 1 gem back.
Your second: do you mean after the tower has been achieved? I think if you need the giant habitats, then go ahead and buy them. If you were going to buy them in the first place, there's no harm in getting a small rebate on them.

Depends on what you want to do.
If you want to save up gems, it's a bad idea because you're basically buying pennies with dollars. If you want to speed up breeding, it's a great idea because it's effectively a refund. Every 5 gems you spend, you get 2 back.
Just another quick reply, wish I could remember who posted this during the Easter event and with the many members debating over island, not quoting exactly verbatim, but elegantly put,
"I personally enjoyed the event without all rewards. We all received two new epic dragons without stress and time breeding them, and a cool habitat and decorations we didn't have to buy, and just for doing what we all do daily when playing our dragonvale game."
Wish I remembered who said it, but I think it was perfectly put and could be applied for this event as well!

Rion: i think you underestimate the amount of gems that can be acquired with patience. The only times I've spent $$ for gems was for the breeding island and my first BEB (2012). I've got a pool of 3k gems now just because I am very conservative in speeding up breeds and like saving resources for future use
I spent $$ during the magic event for the quick-start and during this one because I decided I wanted the Tower and didn't want to stress finding every food and dragon cash ff

That's actually a really good point, I did the same thing on the events as it's also my way of saying thank you to BFS for the work they do in creating these sidelines to the game I enjoy so much. On the gem side, once you have built your friends, have your proper dragons for the coliseum, filled all available slots on the gem island (upgraded to the max), have reliable gem friends and have two ovalith habitats you accumulate a really nice weekly number. My problem is not spending them when a new dragon comes. Patience is a virtue, patience is a virtue, oh - never mind still practicing that one...Koala to all and how they play their own game, as there is no right or wrong way to play this one.

I have mixed feelings about these events and am trying to adjust my attitude to focus on the many positives. It's hard to do that when the final event experience (and the one that lingers) is a failure. No matter how much positive self-talk I use, the bottom line is that I failed to get the Tower.
I so get that.
A couple of weeks ago I posted that I wanted the habitat and the dragons but didn't care about the Tower. I honestly don't want the Tower taking space on my islands, and I really don't care if I have the dusk sky or not. That said.... I've been busily collecting fireflies -- including doing tons of repetitive treat plantings, and collecting party hats which takes forever when the game keeps crashing. I also purchased $5 worth of fireflies on the last sale. By tomorrow I will have the Tower. Cause..... I don't want to not have EVERYTHING in the game. Isn't that dumb? I tried to do the self-talk thing, but I didn't listen to myself.

But at least you were able to have an intelligent conversation since you got to talk to yourself!

Boom. 360 ffs in one 40-minute sitting. If we do get the next two days as double, then I can get the tower without money, or spending any more gems (I think). I'm currently in 1086, can get 280 without gems, two days is 560, total 1646, then the next reset and I'll have the tower.
I haven't bought gems since needing the first nursery upgrade almost 2 years ago, though I did shell out for the island as I'm a completist. I still have 2800+ the power of saving!

Sometimes the hardest person to convince is yourself. I find that especially true with this game.
I won't be able to get the Tower without spending money that I simply don't have, but I'm pleased with the other prizes I've earned. And if my FFs from this weekend turn into free gems then that's a nice bonus. I have mixed feelings about these events and am trying to adjust my attitude to focus on the many positives. It's hard to do that when the final event experience (and the one that lingers) is a failure. No matter how much positive self-talk I use, the bottom line is that I failed to get the Tower. Add that to failing to get the Egg Island and failing to get both of the largest D/L Reward habitats and this awesome game that has given me so many hours of enjoyment loses some of its luster. Maybe I need professional help but after the egg event I stopped collecting party hats. Why? Well, my parks earn a nice daily income on their own and I got sick of seeing that cool island that I did not have. To get these infernal fireflies I couldn't avoid party hats so every day of collecting was a reminder of that past failure.
On the contrary. I think it is the ones who get all the prizes who are in need of professional help.
To all you mad keen dragoneers out there, I supply the following sage advice: GET A LIFE.
PS I really should follow my own advice too.

Thank you rionhow, that's a really good explanation. I only started this year so haven't known any different, and as a stay at home mum and student I don't have cash to spare so my DV playing options are very limited.
I'm just thinking, is the tower even worth going for? I mean really, being able to breed sun/moon/dawn/dusk without waiting is nice, but does it really serve any other purpose other than to be a trophy?
Hello everyone, someone in chat on the wiki mentioned he turned in his Fireflies and had 6 extra Fireflies.
He said instead of getting 1 gem for the 5 fireflies he got 2. Unfortunately I don't know how else we can check on this without completing the even during Double Firefly Weekend, which would mean not getting Fireflies Monday morning.
