After looking at quest results here: dragonvale.wikia.com/wiki/Thread:1119932 it looks like quest results are determined by something... I'm thinking certain quests results in a certain amount of eggs...
My own results (all with level ten dragons and with dragons that match the quest elements exactly ie Brass for Mount Dumme):

Boneyard with bone dragon gave me 12 hr 40 eggs Blitzenwood with tree gave 2 hr two eggs. Lodestone pointe with a lodestone dragon was 9hr 40 eggs Think it's an exact match like when racing one dragon was better than others. Instead of pepper should have used poison for previous post.

It is starting to seem like that, and using the recommended element yield better other prizes, and after you reach 20 (or 40) eggs they stop showing up from quests until the next cycle.
I don't have any concrete data thus far, but will keep better record and share my data starting Mar 14. Hopefully we can find a connection or pattern to these quests.
Park Level - 65
- Mar 13 - Mount Spectre, 2hr quest, Artic lvl 18, found 5K Foods, got 4 eggs (dbl wknd).
- Mar 14 - Hemlock Garden, 24hr, Pepper lvl 17. spent 8 gems, found 25K foods, got 20 eggs. Dont know if part of it was from the 8 gems or not
Mount Spectre, 2hr, Paper lvl 20, spent 2 gems, got 4 eggs. Again, dont know...? I only spent 25 gems to purchase/sell the Giant Habibat.
- Mar 15 - Greenwood Forest, 13hr, Sakura lvl 20,
Plan to give it few more days, if the data doesn't make sense I will stop spending gems, and let the quests run its course. However, I will continue to share my results.
When/if you collect all the awards before April 6th, do you keep collecting eggs that can be used for treats, or does the egg hunt end??

In some previous events, once you cashed in for the final reward, the island went away and the event ended for you, but the current trend is that you continue collecting eggs until it all finishes for everyone, and you just get extra treats at the end

So I love how when you have received too may eggs for the day, the other egg gifts are kept in limbo. I'm hopeful that all the double lots of eggs that I have received, that are being kept till tomorrow, will stay double eggs when the weekend is over. Seems like a good way of making really good use of the double weekends if this is the case. Actually scratch that, it will just mean I hit the limit that much sooner when I can only accept half the amount of eggs.
So I wish to put out the call, STOP SENDING ME GIFTS! I was way over budget on Saturday. So much so that i pretty much used the backlog to reach my limit on Sunday, and I am just making a bigger backlog now. Please send to other people. After blowing my gem stash on island themes on my return I am already back to 4 figures. Others will need them more than me. If I appear in your gift list as someone you owe returns to, please hit the clear button so I am removed from the list.

Does this double weekend last until Tuesday 4:30 PM UTC, as the per the time left on the egg discount, and the last time they made the double rewards 96 hours, did they give us another double rewards?
Trying to understand the egg earnings from the quests is tying my brain up in knots, lol. It certainly seemed random to me, having already reached the duplication pint in quests, and using the same dragons as were successful in previous duplicate quests....and receiving different egg rewards as a result. However...the one poster who commented that perhaps anything longer than a 2 hour quest might earn the full 20 (or 40 during doubles), has me thinking. That might be accurate.
Ran a 2 hour quest in the am yesterday for 4 eggs. Then got a 13 hour quest in wood something (2 w's, don't remember correct name), and thought "this is going to be a long day to try and get my 40 eggs". But at the end of the 13 hours, there were my 36 eggs, bringing me to 40 for the day. Idk.
When you close game and restart it? Yes. But once you game is open its position is set.

Nope. It disappeared right in front of me this morning. Found it quite easy, and sorta savor the moment when it puffed into empty space, emptiness! Still! No egg is found.
Do you think it's a little shy? Maybe I scared it? I did zoom in/out while looking at it, and thinking chocolate...

I thought I'd share my quest strategy in case anyone else is interested in copying it. I got 40 eggs from a 13 hour quest this morning from. I started another and got 13 hours. I realized my best bet is to not finish that quest until tomorrow. I will get an easy 40 eggs before doubles end. I have decided that once I get my questing eggs for the day, if I get anything over 2 hours I will leave it for the next day. It appears that you get 2/4 eggs for a 2 hour quest and you get 20/40 for everything else. So this strategy should make it much easier to get my questing quota for the day. This strategy is especially good because so many people have reported not getting any eggs for the gems they spend speeding up a quest.

Poppy- My general rule of thumb is 280 per day, 560 on doubles days. That way, I will easily get all rewards. The wild card is the gifts- I generally have extremely generous friends so I end up with ~350 and ~700, thought the true maximum including gems and obstacles, is 365 (730 on double days). At this rate, I won't need to spend gems or obstacles.
Basically, you're pretty close to the maximum and are well on your way to getting full rewards

GMTA! I got all 40 eggs from a 24 hour quest first thing this morning. I quested again and got 9 hours. I'm just letting it sit till tomorrow AM, since I already got all 40 possible points for today.
