New dragon has metal/plant trait breeds water trait can the new dragon have all 3?
I miss the old DragonVale
Each dragon only has one trait at a time. So let's say you breed a Metal-trait Flower with a Plant-trait Flower in the Rift, with the Rift aligned to Air. You also have a Light-trait Flower dragon. The result is going to be a Flower or Poison dragon with either a Plant trait, a Metal trait or an Air trait. If the offspring is an Air-trait Flower dragon you can use the tower to change the trait from Air to Plant, Metal or Light (and back to Air if you do) because you've bred all those variants before so they count as unlocked. Is that any clearer?
So is it possible to breed any of the epics with a rift element? Like could you make a rift rainbow dragon, or are only the special rift dragons and the 90 hybrids the only possible outcomes?
You can breed them, but they can't get the Rift element. I was breeding Voltaic/Light Rift for Antumbra and got an instant standard Dream dragon which was fun.

Okay, because lots of people are confused about them, I'll try to write up a thing. xD
Traits
All dragons that have the new Rift element now have a trait. This includes the elemental Rift dragons and the House Rift dragons from the last event, but there is a new source of this as well.
When a standard (non-golden) Hybrid or Opposite dragon is bred in the Rift, there is a fairly high chance that they will be born with the Rift element in addition to their normal ones.
The trait that these Rift dragons have can be any one of the 10 basic elements. A dragon with a given elemental trait also contributes that trait when breeding, but does not gain the ability to be placed into that type of habitat.
Basic elemental Rift dragons and special Rift dragons are locked to a single, pre-chosen trait. The trait that a Hybrid or Opposite dragon gets can be inherited from the traits of either parent, or can be the current element that the Rift is aligned to. You can see the current element of your Rift space in the bottom icon bar while in the Rift, and from the colour of the firefly effect present there.
The aligned element of your Rift changes every day at the daily reset. (When it's not bugged, this wasn't working yesterday.) You can change the element yourself by pressing the elemental icon in the icon bar and paying a substantial amount of Ethereum. This changes your element to the one of your choice until the reset after next.
Aesthetically, possessing a trait alters a dragon to have part of their body's colouration replaced with a shiny elemental effect. The effect is different depending on what element the trait is. Eggs with the Rift element also are shiny, but this does not vary depending on the trait. There is therefore effectively 10 new variations of each standard Hybrid and Opposite dragon and 1 new variation of their eggs.
When you discover the Transfiguration Tower, you can change the trait of a Rift element dragon to any trait that you have previously bred that dragon with.* The traits that you have unlocked for each breed of dragon can be viewed in that dragon's Dragonarium page.
Some special dragons may require their parents to have specific traits, or the Rift to be set to a specific element in order to be bred.
*This could do with additional testing. Be cautious with your dragons. Terms and conditions apply.
Think that's it. Did I get anything wrong or miss anything?
EDIT: SBF got there before me!
beautifully articulated. Lol I'm glad we as a community all want to help each other out and share the information.
Yes! And it's useful to have more than one person giving explanations, cos that helps those of us in the utterly Rifted and confused camp! Thanks to you both I feel the remote glimmerings of a tentative level of marginal teeny bits of comprehension.... And now need a wee lie down 😜😈

I love dragonvale and i hated dragonvale world. this update feels so much like dragonvale world. The rift was never my thing and now i don't feel like playing anymore because the dragonarium is changed forever.
My collect em all instinct has been gutted with all the traits.
meh
I'm gonna give it one more go as i spend a lot of time and money on this game.
Rift traits are basically a way that a basic hybrid dragon, such as flower, could be a "third" type, and a rift dragon. I have a flower dragon that has a metal trait, which means that, when breeding in the Rift cave, it contributes plant, fire, and metal. The traits change the dragons' appearance too.
Hmm, I think your metal-trait Flower will contribute the plant and fire elements but not the metal element to the breed. Metal would only be contributed as a possible trait to the resulting breed, so if you bred two Flowers with metal traits, you wouldn't get a Brass.
To my understanding, I think the standard rules of breeding apply in the Rift: all regular hybrids and opposites are bred exactly the same way as they are in the regular park. The only difference is the addition of traits, and each breed has a pool of 3 traits it can inherit: 1 from each parent and 1 from the Rift's daily alignment.
So as an example, my Rift is still stuck on the metal alignment, so I've decided to work on getting a Zaffer, which requires a metal-trait Plasma. I bred a metal-trait Seaweed yesterday, which I'm now trying to breed with my Lightning Rift. My Lightning Rift will contribute the lightning trait, while the Seaweed contributes its metal trait. The Rift's alignment is now metal, which gives my breed a potential 2 traits it might inherit. Zaffer also requires an air-trait Blue Fire, but it looks like the air alignment will only be coming in 9 days' time, so I might try breeding a Snow or a Blizzard with the air trait, which I can then breed with the Fire Rift to try for an air-trait Blue Fire.
This sounds confusing, but I think it's not so bad once we get the hang of it!
And can't we just call it "etherium"? Why are we racking our brains thinking up new names for it when we have so many other things to figure out (see above)?
I could have sworn I'd read somewhere that someone had bred something odd that suggested that traits contributed their elements to breeding as well but I can't for the life of me find that post now! So I spent some gems on the mainland to check and it certainly doesn't seem to do so there. I'll go edit that bit of my post now...
Speaking of things I thought being wrong... What I did find was clarification on an earlier point: Hatching then selling a dragon keeps that trait unlocked, selling/releasing them from the hatch menu does not. I must have got myself confused between breeds. I'm sorry about supplying false information and very very sorry to those that lost out as a result.

The cost for clearing seems to just keep increasing. The large stuff now costs me 830 to clear one.
Hi Larch if you read back through the last few pages on this thread you will find explanations for that effect, am not sure if it's been tested yet that cost doesn't reset to earlier scale range each reset... Early days in the Rift yet

Why should costs for clearing reset or get cheaper again? In regular DV they also never did. As islands grew more and more expensive, their obstacles to clear did likewise. I remember only one or two of the later islands with cheaper obstacles. It's the same with fog in the rift.

The further adventures of "What's behind that Miasmic Ether!"
So I waited all the way to reset thinking that 515 Etherium to clear the piece next to the "black splotch" would surely come down. HA!
Still 515 (which has gone up to 650 for my next one?!?) (see my ATTN BACKFLIP post) but I coughed up the 515E and Ta,da! a Transfiguration Tower!
Just one problem though... it won't transfigure a thing... or a dragon for that matter. Won't let me choose any of the dragons in there. Do I have to clear every bit of Ether touching it? Do I have to deplete all of my DragonCash and all of my DragonTreats to the BFS Wizards to get the thing active? What to do, what to do?
Which direction did you go Cyn? Which clouds of fog did you clear exactly to get there?
And can't we just call it "etherium"? Why are we racking our brains thinking up new names for it when we have so many other things to figure out (see above)?

OK so I've read through all the info so far until now, and I'm going to go back and read again, but just a few questions from a very confused old-timer:
So say I want to try to breed Plumewing (it seems like a pretty easy one) which needs the Air element with a cross through it (Air Trait?) and Rift. I've got Air Rift from the event which have both those symbols. How would I breed a Plumewing? By sticking Air Rift in with any other dragon and crossing my fingers?
I'll explain a bit of the Rift dimension that may be confusing:
Rift alignment is like weather in the Rift dimension. It affects every Rift breed, so whatever alignment is active might be a rift trait that's passed down to the offspring that you breed. It changes daily, although there was a glitch today where it repeated the same as yesterday, but normally cycles through all 10 elements.
Also, only the basic hybrids (first 90 or so dragons using the 10 elements) can have Rift traits, at this time. Golden hybrids, limited hybrids, epics, galaxy, and gem earning dragons all cannot have Rift traits. The primary element rift dragons and the house mascot rift dragons cannot change their singular rift trait.
I hope this clears things up a bit, let us know if there are more questions.
The traits change the dragons' appearance... do you mean a Flower Rift in general looks different, or that each trait (lightning, cold, water etc,) changes the dragon slightly differently? Do I really need to collect a Flower lightning-Rift, a Flower cold-Rift, etc? Dear God.
I'm... not gonna lie, I'm not altogether happy with this whole Rift thing, but I'll reserve judgement for when I play a bit more. Just one small sarcastic comment to get it out of my system: Dear BFS, If I wanted a game that was like Dragonvale World, I would still be playing DVW. Just sayin'.

No one dragon can have more than one trait, but a hybrid dragon has a choice of multiple traits it can have. The point of traits is to make breeding combos more complex. You don't just need a Malachite dragon. You need a Malachite dragon with a specific trait. Etc. (The trait also affects the look of the dragon so you could customize your dragons and not look just like everyone else out there)

Help! I need advice! I haven't updated my park yet, so not sure what I'm missing. I read last night to level up Rift dragons, which I got to level 17 before maxing out of DCs. Should I do anything else before updating?
*Never mind. I just tried to update and open this Pandora's box, but it's not yet available for my Kindle Fire, it seems. I'm not sure how I feel about this- a little relieved, maybe? I'm going to enjoy my park for now...
So I updated on my iPad, but was waiting to update on my kindle until it just updated automatically, but it didn't update today and man now that I CANT update in want to lol. But it's all good really. My iPad park is not really doing much for me lol. I'm just gonna collect "the stuff" that we can't decide a name for until I have a big enough stash that will actually feel fun when I spend it. Otherwise it's like going to an arcade but only have 2 tokens :/
Thanks for your input, houseforjoy! I've been so confused and anxious the last few days, not really understanding what's going on, and not able to participate. I have to keep reminding myself that it's only a game, and to enjoy the peace and quiet in my little isolated, old style park. I guess I'll be joining everyone at 4.0 at some point...

I'm trying to decide how to apportion my Etherium resources.
Early on, I spent a lot of it on clearing miasmic ether. But I think now that may have been a mistake. Especially with Rift Dragons languishing in my main park, it seems to me to make the most sense to use Etherium to buy new habitats and upgrade them at least once (so they hold more Etherium and I can check my park a little more infrequently) to hold the Rift dragons I already have. So I can be gathering more etherium over time.
So that's the route I'm taking. Trying to get all my Rift dragons into the Rift dimension and habitats to hold them. Only doing cheap breeds for now to leave most of the E for this purpose.
The 100 Etherium level breed takes 5 hours of existing in the Dimension from a lvl 20 Rift Dragon -- or 1 hour with 5 level 20 dragons.
220 Etherium is more than twice that -- 11 hours or 11 Level 20 dragons.
I currently have 8 dragons in the Rift. And not all are level 20.

Could someone give recommendations of what to breed with what in the rift by trait? I'm so confused because my rift alignment was lightening but both dragons I bred had the fire trait. So if we have every Rift dragon from the event ie. Earth, cold, air etc does the daily trait matter? Where are we suppose to store these dragons?
It's so expensive to breed. I updated my Rift habitat so I could move another rift dragon up to make purple magic dust. This doesn't seem very well planned out.
My offering of wisdom: the cost of clearing the clouds is fixed. However each cloud already had its own cost based on size and position. Think concentric squares, the inner ones being extra cheap 50-85, the next ones more expensive and so on up to the 600 or so level where it MIGHT max out. No one screamed about worse yet. And the rift dragons have SCARY appetites. 3 million a mark at level 17 ?
I believe this is a rather interesting way to keep old players busy. Wayyyyy more complex to breed anything and savage resources management wich is a welcome change for anyone who keeps breeding stuff they already have in 3 blinged out breeding caves at a million, million 5 Dragoncash a pop and think nothing of blowing a billion DC or a million food because you have stockpiles enough to please the hundreds of high level dragons you have. I went from level 95 to mid 97 almost by accident just by feeding leftovers to my rift dragons.
So this gets you the fun of starting a new game without throwing away the park you invested years in...

Seems the clouds have base price by size and position, then go up daily with a possible reset ?

As far as I understand, dragons bred in the rift can either have the current rift alignment or an element from the parent dragons as a trait. For example, if you bred Plant and Fire Rift, and the Rift's alignment was set to Earth, the dragon you get could have the Plant, Fire, or Earth trait.

My working assumption is that the end trait is random-ish. Probably between traits of the parents and daily trait.

I've previously said that releasing a dragon with a new trait before hatching didn't unlock for me.
BUT IT DOES. I had a wind dragon with a light trait, which I 100% released before hatching. Light was not unlocked when I went to look in my dragonarium.
However, 6 hours later when I had closed dragonvale for a while and then reopened it? The light trait for the wind dragon WAS unlocked. I think there's a delay, just like when I reached level 100 I didn't receive Solarflare until I restarted the game after some time.
So you were right! I think the game has just had a little trouble updating in-game due to the large amount of new content. Everything is almost instant, as the wizards say.
