The further adventures of "What's behind that Miasmic Ether!"
So I waited all the way to reset thinking that 515 Etherium to clear the piece next to the "black splotch" would surely come down. HA!
Still 515 (which has gone up to 650 for my next one?!?) (see my ATTN BACKFLIP post) but I coughed up the 515E and Ta,da! a Transfiguration Tower!
Just one problem though... it won't transfigure a thing... or a dragon for that matter. Won't let me choose any of the dragons in there. Do I have to clear every bit of Ether touching it? Do I have to deplete all of my DragonCash and all of my DragonTreats to the BFS Wizards to get the thing active? What to do, what to do?
Well none of the dragon I see there are allowed more than one trait. Which dragons do you have which have two traits unlocked? Are they in the rift?

I've previously said that releasing a dragon with a new trait before hatching didn't unlock for me.
BUT IT DOES. I had a wind dragon with a light trait, which I 100% released before hatching. Light was not unlocked when I went to look in my dragonarium.
However, 6 hours later when I had closed dragonvale for a while and then reopened it? The light trait for the wind dragon WAS unlocked. I think there's a delay, just like when I reached level 100 I didn't receive Solarflare until a restarted the game after some time.
So you were right! I think the game has just had a little trouble updating in-game due to the large amount of new content. Everything is almost instant, as the wizards say.
This has also been happening in the coliseum for me. The way it looks for the new daily element doesn't change until the game reopens, so for a while my earth dragon is competing in a fire arena... but the next day he does win the fire competition, so it is okay...
Hi Larch if you read back through the last few pages on this thread you will find explanations for that effect, am not sure if it's been tested yet that cost doesn't reset to earlier scale range each reset... Early days in the Rift yet
Why should costs for clearing reset or get cheaper again? In regular DV they also never did. As islands grew more and more expensive, their obstacles to clear did likewise. I remember only one or two of the later islands with cheaper obstacles. It's the same with fog in the rift.
I don't think that's true. There were new objects to clear that were more expensive, sure. And some islands had more of them than others. But specific objects were always the same price to clear. Small bushes were always one price. Small rocks were always another. With the rift, the same type of object costs progressively more the more you clear. The equivalent with islands would be having one small bush cost 5DC and the next small bust costs 15DC and then the next cost 50DC, and then having a rock move from 50DC to 100DC to 500DC the more rocks you clear. That never happened in non-riftian Dragonvale. Right now, the large miasma costs more than the small miasma, as with island objects. But the price for large and small miasma grows exponentially independently of their relation to each other and based only on how many you have already cleared, which is not something that has ever happened when we have such a quantity of things to clear.
OK so I've read through all the info so far until now, and I'm going to go back and read again, but just a few questions from a very confused old-timer:
So say I want to try to breed Plumewing (it seems like a pretty easy one) which needs the Air element with a cross through it (Air Trait?) and Rift. I've got Air Rift from the event which have both those symbols. How would I breed a Plumewing? By sticking Air Rift in with any other dragon and crossing my fingers?
I'll explain a bit of the Rift dimension that may be confusing:
Rift alignment is like weather in the Rift dimension. It affects every Rift breed, so whatever alignment is active might be a rift trait that's passed down to the offspring that you breed. It changes daily, although there was a glitch today where it repeated the same as yesterday, but normally cycles through all 10 elements.
Also, only the basic hybrids (first 90 or so dragons using the 10 elements) can have Rift traits, at this time. Golden hybrids, limited hybrids, epics, galaxy, and gem earning dragons all cannot have Rift traits. The primary element rift dragons and the house mascot rift dragons cannot change their singular rift trait.
Rift traits are basically a way that a basic hybrid dragon, such as flower, could be a "third" type, and a rift dragon. I have a flower dragon that has a metal trait, which means that, when breeding in the Rift cave, it contributes plant, fire, and metal. The traits change the dragons' appearance too.
I hope this clears things up a bit, let us know if there are more questions.
The traits change the dragons' appearance... do you mean a Flower Rift in general looks different, or that each trait (lightning, cold, water etc,) changes the dragon slightly differently? Do I really need to collect a Flower lightning-Rift, a Flower cold-Rift, etc? Dear God.
I'm... not gonna lie, I'm not altogether happy with this whole Rift thing, but I'll reserve judgement for when I play a bit more. Just one small sarcastic comment to get it out of my system: Dear BFS, If I wanted a game that was like Dragonvale World, I would still be playing DVW. Just sayin'.
yep, the traits alter the physical appearance of the dragon. My flower has shiny metal parts as a mane is the best way to describe it without showing you it. I can added some photos to my Tumblr but it's hard for me to upload photos here, even when I'm not traveling like I am this weekend.

So to recap rift breeding in the simplest way I know:
The dragon you get from rift breeding is based on the elements of the parent dragons.
The trait your baby dragon gets is any one (1) of the traits of the parent dragon and the traitalignment of the rift, but is limited by the what traits certain dragons are allowed, which you can see in the dragonarium*.
So, imo, the most effective way of determining how to breed rift dragons with specific rift combos is: 1) ignore the rift element, it has to be there with every rift dragon, and you can only breed dragons in the rift which are rift dragons 2)See if you need any specific dragon a)If so, see if that dragon needs any specific traits b)If necessary use the transfiguration tower to change the required dragon to the required trait 3)Then see what specific elements you need a)Then see if there is a certain trait that needs to be present with those elements. b)If necessary use the transfiguration tower to change the dragon with the required elements to the required trait, but you might be able to rely on the trait alignment of the rift. 5)Then see if the trait alignment of the rift needs to be a specific.
Any corrections?
*Effectively this means that if you want your baby dragon to get a trait the parent dragons cannot have but the baby dragon can, you need the trait alignment of the rift to be the desired trait.

beautifully articulated. Lol I'm glad we as a community all want to help each other out and share the information.
Thanks. Yeah, how it all works in the Rift isn't the most intuitive thing I've ever seen. I can well understand why people are struggling with it, I'm not even quite sure of all the details myself, but that's what I've pieced together since the update.
In other news, the Rift elements getting stuck worked out in my favour. I was stuck on Earth element, and managed to breed an Antumbran dragon which needs that. Wow! I really love how it looks, it reminds me of my favourite digimon from years ago...
Actually I rather like the designs of all the Rift dragons so far, they're very flashy. More of them to collect is a good thing in my book, but being able to breed them rather than having to collect event currency is better.
Could someone give recommendations of what to breed with what in the rift by trait? I'm so confused because my rift alignment was lightening but both dragons I bred had the fire trait. So if we have every Rift dragon from the event ie. Earth, cold, air etc does the daily trait matter? Where are we suppose to store these dragons?
It's so expensive to breed. I updated my Rift habitat so I could move another rift dragon up to make purple magic dust. This doesn't seem very well planned out.
What dragon do you want?
What elements does that dragon need? What trait does that dragon need?
Breed the dragon you want with the parent rift dragons with the right elements (i.e. what habitat can it reside in besides rift) as you usually do and make sure that at least one of the parent dragons or the rift alignment has the right trait (little symbol in the corner).
I think it's very well-planned, but it's probably frustrating to many of us for whom dragonvale was much simpler and for those of us who had so much money buying habitats and speed breeding was nothing.

You need a dragon with an Air trait and a dragon with a Rift element. However, the Plumewing dragon also appears in the dragonarium under Air and Fire, so I would try and Air Rift Dragon and a rift dragon with a fire element (and imo an air trait). I'm going to try Blightwing (which has air and fire elements even though it has a dark trait) with my Air Rift Dragon (which obviously has the required air trait).

Just got a rainbow from an air rift twin and snowsquall rift in the rift. Huh. Well I do love rainbows and it's normal but huh. Doesn't it need four elements. Or does rift count as one.

What's wrong with this picture?
Yesterday's breeding during an Air trait day produced a Blazing with a Cold trait and a Smoke with an Air trait. Today, neither are "unlocked", if by unlocked we mean that we don't have to pay 4000E for each.
Did I misunderstand?

I like the idea of exploring the rift, clearing fog etc., but the execution could be better. Some ideas:
1. A rifty dragonarium - it took me years to get my fire breathing dragonarium and I want it back! (And that's only red fire not blue!) We could find it in the fog and it would keep track of just rifty dragons.
2. Cost progression on breeding could be more logical - 100, 220, 220, 1000 just makes no sense to me!

Yes, they mean that if you look at blazing in the dragonarium, the cold trait will be unlocked, and if you look at smoke in the dragonarium, the air trait will be unlocked. If you find the transfiguration tower, you can change your smoke dragon or blazing dragon's traits from among unlocked traits. The rift alignment is random unless you pay and there's not any way I know of to make it cheaper.

Mmm, I raised that point cos someone a few/many posts earlier raised the point that we don't know what happens at reset with everything yet, and other costs apparently return to lower levels before escalating agin
then there was another hypoth that the fog was priced in 'circular layers' outward... lol Pollyanna vs JohnSparrow 😄
And then someone else went and did Serious Math on it..... 😱

Well that's my opinion anyway! Koala to all 🐨🐨🐨
1... I too wish there was a separate way to just find out which Rift dragons I have in the Rift vs the other dimension.
2. I expect the cost progression is logical to the creators even though we have not found its logic yet. Note, however, they added a 1 to the beginning of the progression. so it seems to b 1, 100, 220, 220, 1000 now.
3. Please do not get rid of traits. I am loving the extra challenge the traits are adding. What's the point of the Rift if it is just the same as the regular dimension, just different looking land?
