That does remind me, I highly recommend that players change their friend name. We're all allowed one free name change, after that it will cost gems. If you don't change your name, your friends will see you as 'Dragonvale#<number>' and likely won't remember who you are in 6 months if they have 10+ names on the list with that name. Perhaps change the name to match your forum name, or in game park name, something that will allow us to identify each other down the road.
You can also change your icon, and friends will see your new icon too!

UGH! I changed my name and it not only changes your name but it changes your ID number also. I am now #1917
So we're going to clearly need a new system here for adding friends. While my gems are pretty much spoken for these days, I'd love to add as many people from the community as possible just for co-op breeding and checking out other parks.
In order to add a friend, you have to add each other from your parks. No notification appears stating you've received a request, both sides have to know to add one another. For each person looking to add people, they have to provide their friend ID in a post, each person adding them has to post they've added them, and they have to then go through those and add them back. It's a mess to coordinate, and I'm going to guess that the lack of notifications is due to this not quite being ready. I imagine if the friend system was really ready, Backflip would be advertising it loudly.
Maybe we need a thread where people post their IDs, and if you add someone you send them a message on the forums here directly with your id so they can add you back and delete the message and keep things a bit cleaner. Or just a post where you put your id in and everyone just keeps adding everyone else as much as possible but you don't need to respond to any.

Normally I'd like to wait for more input in the backroom but yes, this is getting out of hand a bit, I think a post is needed fairly urgently. So I'm going to make one. Fair warning - this is by no means final in format, location, number of posts, anything.
My initial thoughts are to create and maintain a first post set out like this:
{Forum Name} {(name to @ tag if different)} - {Friend Code} - {Link to message that user}
E.g. for me: Arkynos - Arkynos#2773 - Message
Any suggestions welcome. I'm probably going to merge these posts (at least the ones with the codes in them!) into the thread as well, so it's fine to keep posting here while I bake.

When you add a friend I'm pretty sure you just add their number. The field where you type in the friend's ID does not accept letters. Someone please correct me if I' wrong.

Here's my 'how to use the new friend system' post:
The new friend system has been added to DragonVale, and while it still has some issues it does work. It works regardless of platform, and does not use Facebook. I'm guessing they have not announced it yet because it is not finished and/or polished and still needs a few changes. We're likely beta testing it.
In order to access the new friend system, open the social menu and select 'invite friends' from the bottom left. This will open a window where it shows you your Icon, your Name and Number (combined this is your Friend ID), and has options to Share Link, Change Icon, Change Friend ID, and Add Friend. By default your Name will be DragonVale and you'll be assigned a random Number. This combination is what all your friends will see. If everyone leaves their name as DragonVale, then we'll all have a whole lot of 'DragonVale#<Random Number>' friends on our list with no idea who they are after a few days.
So the first thing you want to do is click 'Change Friend ID'. This will open up a new window with your Friend ID, 'DragonVale' and options to change that name. There are suggested names below that you can click, and change the name to traditional DV names such as Nogard, Gardenia, etc. I recommend you click your name in the text dialog above, where it says DragonVale, and type in your own custom name, perhaps using your name from the Community here. When you click Change, you'll be notified that you get one free name change before it will cost gems. Then you'll receive a new random number that will change too, and together you'll see your new Friend ID. I have not checked the cost of changing names a second time.
You can also change your icon, chosing between all of the dragon icons in egg, baby, or adult form. Your friends will also see this icon by your FriendID in their friends list.
In order to add a friend, you need to know their Friend ID and they need to know your id. Click add a friend, and you'll see a dialog box open asking for the friend id. It has 2 parts, the first is the name and the second is the number. By default the name will display DragonVale. You'll need to change that for most of us who have customized our names. Then add the number to the second box and click add. Be sure to fill out both, as DragonVale#0102 is different than Quil#0102.
You'll see a message that the request has been sent, and that they need to add you back. Unfortunately they do not receive a message with the request that they can accept, your new friend must also send a request to your id. That's going to make the posts here go crazy as people go back and forth asking for friends, getting responses they've been added with requests to add them back. I'm hoping this is part of the beta stage, and as it is improved then we'll see requests in game that we can just 'accept'.
There is also a share link button, for those who are challenged adding friend by name and number. You can post the link and those who click it will automatically try to add you in the app. You'll still need to add them back, it just saves typing.
Now you're all set and once both sides have added each other, you'll see the person in your friends list under their Friend ID. There will also be a new little red 'X' that you can click to delete that friend from the list. One thing I did note is that if you visit a Friend ID, their name is not displayed on the screen while visiting. I assume this is another minor change that will get corrected as the test the system more.

Good idea. I clicked the link and it straight up opened DragonVale and sent you a friend request.
For now in the WIP thread I'll tack it on the end for anyone who posts it. (It won't be there for everyone because not everyone will end up posting their link and I'm not volunteering to reverse engineer how that url is generated.)
I do see oomagooma25 changed her name from the number I originally added.
Hello Teresa, thank you for the add! I added your new, recently changed ID (Theresa#5442), but it’s saying that you have to add me (citizenelle#5353). I think because you initially added me under your original Friend ID, the game isn’t recognising your request with your new ID.
To answer your earlier question, I don’t think the Friend ID number means much. As you noted, when you change your name the number changes too. I’d be interesting if the number corresponded to when we started. I’ve been playing DV since it’s inception in 2011, but I took a break for a couple years a while back. If the Friend ID gave any indication of how many players there were, I would definitely start a new account to see that number!

This will work fine for those who read the Community here on the same device that they use to play DragonVale. When you click it, it tries to open the DV app and add the friend. If you're reading this on your PC like I do, then clicking it does nothing but confuse your browser. I would lean toward offering your Friend ID over the link, or using both, as the Friend ID works for everyone.

It's currently ordered alphabetally based on the @ tag, which is tied to the forum and static. Yes, it puts me up near the top; no, that's not why I did it.
Edit: The Pikachu is non-negotiable. The rest I'm open to ideas on.
I'd like to post a request from my wife, who hasn't really joined any online communities, never added many people back when GameCenter was active, and doesn't use Facebook for DV. She needs DV friends, people with a variety of dragons to co-op, who might have newer dragons to clone from current events, and she could also use up to 5 or so people to trade food and gems with in game. I know most people have their gems spoken for already, but she's excited just getting to add anyone to her game. She has a mostly complete park and has been playing since day 2 (She watched me play on the first day of release).
Her friend id is Shadyr#8844. If anyone adds her, I can get ids from here. I'll have her send a request to everyone on the list so far, so if you'd like to request back that would work too.
And I'd be happy to add people to my own park too, if we haven't been friended yet.
