DragonCash farming is a old strategy used by players since 2012 to increase their DC production so they have a steady, reliable stream of DC.
DC is the main source of currency for DragonVale. Since it’s relied upon for everything from decorations to treats to islands, it can be difficult to obtain enough DC to fulfil your game objectives. As a result, players from the early days of DV started to produce 'DC farms' (islands filled with dragons that earn high amounts of DC).
The Panlong dragon, released in January 2012, was the first dragon to introduce this concept. With the ability to add several element boosts, Panlong produced a high amount of DC (540 DC/min with two element boosts). This was adjusted a couple years later. Long-time players may still have many Panlong dragons from yesteryear.
If you find you don’t have enough DC to grow treats and level up your dragons, or to buy the habitats or islands you need, you may want to consider DC farming.
BEST DRAGONS FOR DC FARMS
The top dragons for DC farming are those that
• produce a high amount of DC • can be boosted with several element boosts • can reside in a habitat that has a high DC cap (so you don’t have to collect DC every 15 minutes), and • whose habitats do not have a limit or cost gems.
Currently, the best dragons for DC farming with boosts are Iden and Ocular. The best dragon without boosts is Portent.
Breeding percentages: 2% (breeding hint); 1.5% (single-parent clone in Cooperative); .75% (single-parent clone in Vale and Rift); 30% (double-parent clone in Vale and Rift)
Maximum DC earn rate: 1500 DC/minute
Habitat: Dream (large)
• 1,500,000 DC cap • dragon capacity 4 • costs 150,000,000 DC • 24 hour build time • no habitat limit • 14 large Dream Habitats will fit on a regular island • 36 on the Gargantuan or Overgrown Islands

The benefit of using Portent is no boosts are required. In the past, the top dragons to DC farm shared elements, so using a dragon that didn’t require boosts was highly sought after. Since Iden and Ocular were released, and they luckily do not share elements, so it’s not necessary to use Portent. But I included the Portent info for those who prefer Portent.
As you play DragonVale, you’ll notice rainbow dragons (Rainbow, Aurora, Party, etc) are frequent (and long) breeding fails. As a result, many DV players have Rainbow farms using the large Rainbow Habitat, which is the same size as the large Dream Habitat.
Since only 2 Rainbow dragons can fit in a Rainbow Habitat, Rainbow dragons are not as ideal as Portent, but what else are you going to do with all those Rainbow fails?
DRAGONS POTENTIALLY EARNING MORE THAN THEIR INFO CARD STATES
High-earning dragons can make more than what’s on their info card. This was first discovered in 2015 by RickABQ who had the remarkable insight to test some dragon earning rates. This bug does not affect most dragons, only certain high-earning dragons.
It was first assumed element boosts caused this glitch, but by 2016, RickABQ and several other players, myself included, had done enough testing on other epic dragons, like the Rainbow dragon, to disprove this theory. Testing showed there are clear plateaus in earning rates, which means a dragon can plateau (reach its highest DC earning rate) at a level lower than 20. Therefore, it’s not always necessary to level your DV Farming dragon up to 20. Since this is a bug, if you would like more information on this, and the maximum level for the dragons’ DC earning rates, please message me.
In 2018, I created a DC farm of 84 Bogberrys on the Gargantuan Island and 144 Portents on the Overgrown Island. Within 3-4 months, the farms reaped enough DC so it was no a longer a struggle to afford islands or to level my dragons to 20. I am now financially free, and I rarely collect DC (except to earn event currency), because I have more than I’ll ever need, even if multiple new islands are introduced with their exorbitant prices.
The cost of the large Dream Habitat was not a struggle to purchase, because I bought them one at a time, as I needed them. And I purchased them when Kairos was ready so I could speed through the 24 hour build time. The DC farming dragons were essentially paying for each new habitat, but this will require regular visits to your park to collect DC.
TIP: if you’re low on DC now, you may want to start with Ocular first, since its habitat is more affordable. Then your Ocular farm will help pay for your Iden dream farm.
It may seem like a daunting and time-consuming task to breed a DC farm. But it really isn’t, because when you breed two of the same dragon, the breeding percentage is greatly increased. It took approximately 3-4 months to breed 84 Bogberrys and 6-7 months to breed 144 Portents. All breeding was done in the Vale at the Epic and Enchanted locations. If you are a new player, and you’re still trying to breed many of the limited dragons in the event market, you likely won’t have any locations available to breed DC farming dragons. If your goal is to collect all the dragons, DC farming isn’t something that can be viably achieved until you’ve completed most of your collections. Once you have all the returning limited dragons for each event, you’ll have open breeding locations to produce you DC farming dragons. But you can still get started now — might as well put those Rainbow fails to good DC use.
