The Rift is another dimension of DragonVale. A remnant of the Cataclysm first introduced with the Roar of the Rift event, it became a permanent feature of DragonVale in September 2017. The Rift unlocks at park level 28, providing opportunities for players to discover new dragons and explore an entirely new imagination of DragonVale.

Etherium is the currency used in the Rift. You can earn Etherium by collecting from habitats, tapping Magical Vortices / Etherium Vortices (there are 12 Vortices in the Rift every day), releasing newly bred dragons, contributing to the Airship, racing at the Dragon Track, winning Quests, and purchasing Etherium from the Rift Market.

To discover the Rift buildings and make room for habitats, you’ll need to clear the purple clouds of Miasmic Ether. Ether that can be removed is slightly lighter in colour and will have at least one side cleared. Tap the Ether and the cost to clear it will show. Ether that is darker and completely surrounded will not be available.
The price to clear Miasmic Ether starts at 250 Etherium and gradually rises to 32,000 Etherium.

The Rift Gate allows you to transfer dragons from the Rift to the Vale, and the Vale to the Rift. Traited dragons can be moved to the Vale. Untraited dragons can be a breeding outcome in the Rift; however, untraited dragons cannot be used in breeding combos at the Rift Breeding Cave. Only traited dragons can breed in the Rift.
To send a dragon through the Rift Gate
Select the dragon > on its info card press Move > tap the Rift Gate
It takes two hours to transfer a dragon in the Rift Gate, or you can speed up the process with Etherium.

Similar to the Vale’s Hibernation Cave, you can send dragons to hibernate when they’re not on display. Upgrading the Hibernation Cave costs Etherium and is half price during the Expansion Extravaganza.
Transfiguration Tower
The Transfiguration Tower allows you to change the dragon’s trait. You can also unlock traits and see what the trait looks like on the dragon.
Discovering the Rift Buildings
To uncover the Hibernation Cave and Transfiguration Tower, you’ll need to clear Miasmic Ether. Here’s a map of the Rift showing the locations of the buildings.
(Note: this map may be outdated and there could be new locations)

There is an enormous benefit to breeding in the Rift, since breeding is instant! This will allow players to breed many times in the Rift every day. In addition, dragons can acquire traits that will alter the appearance of the dragon.
Transfiguration Tower and Traits
Only dragons with traits can be used as breeding parents in the Rift. The traits are identical to the primary elements in the Vale (plant, fire, earth, cold, lightning, water, air, metal, light, dark); however, they act very differently than elements.
The traits of the parent dragons can be inherited and change the appearance of the offspring. Traits only provide a visual difference in the dragon. It is not an element. The parent dragons must contain the required elements for the target offspring.
You can change a dragon’s trait using the Transfiguration Tower.
Enter the Transfiguration Tower > select dragon > select trait > tap Select Trait button
If you haven't unlocked a trait for the dragon, you can unlock it for 10,000 Etherium.
Rift Alignment
The Rift also contributes a trait while breeding. The Rift Alignment changes at reset every day. The order of the alignment is similar to the element order (plant > fire > earth > cold > lightning > water > air > metal > light > dark).
Changing the Alignment
It costs 4,000 Etherium to change the Alignment, and the new alignment will remain through two daily resets (so you’ll have two days to breed with the selected alignment).
To change the Alignment
Tap the Rift Alignment icon > select trait > Change
TIP: Selecting the Alignment and parent traits has great advantages for players who are trying to unlock all the elements for each dragon (purple fire). If several potential offspring from your breeding pair are missing an element, change the Alignment and/or breeding parent traits to that element.
Rift Breeding Cave
At the Rift Breeding Cave, you can select the breeding parents. Once your complete a bred, you’ll be given the option to Hatch, Display, Sell, or Release the dragon.
• Hatch: after hatching, you can place the dragon in a Rift habitat, hibernate, or move it to the Rift Gate so it’ll transfer to the Vale.
• Display: if you pedestal the dragon, you’ll have a unique Rift pedestal which has an altered animated appearance from the regular pedestal. Since there’s no room to place decorations in the Rift, all pedestals must immediately transfer to the Vale.
IMPORTANT: if you pedestal a dragon, you will not receive event currency. Pedestals are paid out when they are placed. Since the pedestal is moved to the Rift Gate and is not placed on an island until it’s transferred, it loses its ability to payout.
• Sell: you will receive the DC selling amount for the dragon, which is identical to the Vale.
• Release: releasing a dragon back into the Rift will earn you 100 Etherium per dragon and the allotted dragon’s XP.
NOTE: during events with the Donation Boards, the option to Release the dragon for Etherium is replaced with the ability to Donate the dragon.

While traits are not elements and do not add to the breeding combo, the Rift itself is considered an element, in the same way that Surface and other epics are elements. On a traited dragon’s profile card, the Rift element will show (see image below). This is important to remember, because if you breed three different elements in the Rift, you could receive Surprise when it’s available or one of the rainbow dragons (requiring four or more elements), since the Rift will count as the fourth element.
