argh. trying to sort out why it only breaks when it restarts at midnight.
I am getting the champagne ready for tonight, as I wait with bated breath like a New Year’s Eve countdown party to see if the sandbox remains in working order, or if it continues to turn into a pumpkin at midnight like the rest of the fairytales. ✨🍾✨

We’ll see what happens at midnight again. It was working after 12:00 A.M. over here yesterday/early this morning. Hopefully, Drow got it sorted out. 🎉🍾 Thanks for working in the sandbox, drow!

nope, it booped up again. its the weirdest thing. there's a script which runs at midnight to rotate the server logs, and restart the web server. the server is started with a specific minimally-privileged user, and a pre-defined environment. when the script runs at midnight via cron, the dvbox site is broken. (and only the cdn branch of the dvbox site, all other sites on the server are totally fine). but if i run the script myself, then everything just magically works. i still haven't sorted out what difference is causing it.

Cron won't have any environment variables setup when it runs, so only uses what's in the script. When you run it manually, it'll also use whatever is in your current user / login profile plus the script. I'm sure you already know that, but I've run into more issues than I'd like to admit over the years missing a certain setting. When it works manually but not in cron, that's almost certainly it.
Getting some odd parent choices. Both Flowerhop and Terradiem exclude required plant element when seeking combos. I tested apocalypse (epic, open combo, requires plant) and Woven (special, open, requires plant). Both function as expected.

good thought, but yeah i've checked that. the start script wipes everything from ENV, then sets specific values for HOME, SHELL, PATH, HOST, and LOGNAME. and that's all working properly.
this morning, i'm thinking that it may be related to volume permissions, which are managed by the OS separately from UNIX file permissions. if i start the web service manually, i think the OS recognizes that the server process descends from a login session which had volume accesss. whereas a process started from cron has no parent login session at all. testing that theory next.

This may be left over from when those dragons got plant added to their profiles and combos.
Edit: another request, Dargon is still showing as a possible result on my Sandbox (Motley isn't). I don't know if that's just my browser taking a while to catch up as I haven't seen it mentioned here, though. (And no worries if you don't get round to this, you've done a lot already!)

will also be fixed shortly. and happily, i believe i've found and fixed the bug that kept causing these scheduled changes to be missed.

Thank you! I'd forgotten the dragon elements were updated. Very much appreciate you taking care of it.

Let us know when you find the answer, you've got me curious now. Any chance your volume is encrypted?
