this morning, i'm thinking that it may be related to volume permissions, which are managed by the OS separately from UNIX file permissions. if i start the web service manually, i think the OS recognizes that the server process descends from a login session which had volume accesss. whereas a process started from cron has no parent login session at all. testing that theory next.
Let us know when you find the answer, you've got me curious now. Any chance your volume is encrypted?
behind the scenes! the main dvbox site, dvbox.bin.sh, really only hosts an HTML page. everything else, from images to javascript to JSON data, is loaded from a separate CDN site, dvboxcdn.com. everything on dvboxcdn is stored on a dedicated 1 TB SSD. not encrypted, but a worthy guess. (also, everything on dvboxcdn is proxied through Cloudflare. this helps the site run faster, and keeps it from eating my server's bandwidth alive.)
macOS has two separate layers of resource permissions, one of which it manages itself. in this layer, access generally depends on being within an authenticated login session. if you have permission to something and start an application, that application has access to it. for UNIX things like a web server which are started by cron, you have to go to the Privacy and Security settings and add the binary to the Full Disk Access permission list.
what's obnoxious is that i had to do this already, a year ago when i upgraded to the current server hardware, but apparently the recent OS upgrade decided to unset it. whatever, its set again and everything should be good and glorious for a while. if this happens again maybe i'll remember what i've just written.
Getting some odd parent choices. Both Flowerhop and Terradiem exclude required plant element when seeking combos. I tested apocalypse (epic, open combo, requires plant) and Woven (special, open, requires plant). Both function as expected.
thanks, some requirement changes snuck past me. updating now.
I think I can help with this on the admin side — a 'Dragon Updates' staff thread you can quickly review to see the recent changes. There have been quite a few lately, and the reps make a lot of change requests.

And this was 'easy' mode. I was using my iPad Pro, so I didn’t have Alt-click / Option-click access to mark the Dargons. But I finally ended up with only 12 Fire dragon shadows.
I love this game! It will be my new thing to replace sleep. Many cheers! ❤️

This was very fun, I've never played a Minesweeper-like game before so I'm surprised I got it first try! (Only on easy though. ) (I had to only screenshot the middle so it would fit on the screen.)
Didn’t think I’d be the first with 20 Fire dragon shadows since we have so many avid experts!
'Dargon' is a splendid addition to the sandbox!

updated with a soft ALT/option key. if the code thinks you're on a touchscreen device, there will be an ALT (android, etc) or option (iOS) button in the lower-left corner of the screen. tap that, then tap on a square to mark it as a Dargon.

🤯🤯 First with easy mode and expert mode!
For me expert mode involves getting some lucky guesses in, so I’m not really an “expert” but more like a lucky guesser. Then I get an unlucky guess and - DARGONS EVERYWHERE!
Since we’re missing harder mode, I worked on it.
I love that there’s a game dedicated to Dargon! 😄 Thank you, drow!

Oh man, and here I thought I could take a break lol! I have got to try out this new update!
I was just playing and didn’t see the option button. I’ll refresh the page. Here I go, back into Dargons Amok…
Oh WOW! The game tells me I won, and all the cute Dargons show. I love it! I feel like I accomplished something, it’s a fantastic reward.
It’s also A LOT easier and quicker to play. You don’t have to remember where the Dargons are located. This is by far the fastest I’ve won, just took several minutes. I’m hooked!
Dargons Amok is quite a bit easier when the Dargons are marked. But I also like the previous version because it’s a combination of Mindsweeper and that memory game Concentration. It was like Dargon was playing tricks on your mind, which is a very Dargon-y thing to do.
(Slowly but surely getting no work done, thanks to drow and Dargon)

This is very addictive and Dargon is the perfect dragon to pop up when he's uninvited. I always start at the corners, but sometimes Dargon hides there too. 🤣
i think i've got all the event updates into the sandbox, just recalculating now.
as usual, please let me know if you think i've missed something. thanks!
meanwhile, why this update is delayed...
Stunning! Is this Thunder Bay / 'The Lakehead'?
