We had a fantastic time holding this contest for DragonVale players everywhere. Thank you to everyone who participated and made The Origin Contest a success. And special thanks to the Deca DV Team for creating such remarkable dragons and providing us with their etymology. Here are the answers for The Origin Contest. The correct origin is in bold.
A. Orlena means 'gold' and why Rosegold is in the breeding combo B. Orlena refers to a character from Game of Thrones C. Orlena means 'innocent', since Orlena can bring pain from its thorns but also gentleness like a rose petal D. Orlena refers to a character from The Poisonwood Bible E. None of the above
(Nobody got this origin correct!)
Deca DV Team’s response:
Orlena’s name was a reference to Olenna Tyrell, the Queen of Thorns from Game of Thrones. Because the dragon looks royal and the tail scepter looks like a rose.
2. What does the gold 'rod' on Smigi’s egg represent?
A. A key B. A cat’s head with ears C. A trapeze bar D. A constellation E. None of the above
Deca DV Team’s response:
The same ‘rod’ is in the texture of the adult/juvenile versions as well, but I don’t think it’s meant to represent anything specific, that was just an artist inspiration in the moment.
A. The artist who created Brizoni loves Italian food B. The artist who created Brizoni is from a village called Zoni C. The artist was enjoying a Japanese soup called zōni D. The artist’s favourite video game has mystical beings called The Zoni E. None of the above
Deca DV Team’s response:
Brizoni came straight from a team member without any real reasoning except that it sounded like it would fit.
4. What is the inspiration behind Mesmer’s design and animation?
A. Franz Anton Mesmer and animal magnetism B. Hypnos, the god of sleep C. Milton Erickson and hypnotherapy D. Harry Potter’s Bewitched Sleep (sleeping spell) E. None of the above
Deca DV Team’s response:
Mesmer was inspired by the idea of having a character like Hypnos, god of sleep, who would be responsible for sending the Valers to sleep by hypnotizing or mesmerizing them in the event’s theme.
A. A cartoon bulldog boy B. A stuffed animal or toy C. A cartoon clown D. A cartoon rabbit E. None of the above
Deca DV Team’s response:
Binky the Clown.
I asked for clarification on this, since Binky the Clown can refer to the animated character from the series and comic strip Garfield, or the antagonist from the film Shakes the Clown. Deca confirmed Garfield.
7. Why is Etch (a swampy / flytrap dragon) named Etch?
A. Refers to the acidic nature of the dragon B. Refers to the word 'itch' C. Refers to barely being able to etch or make out a figure in the darkness D. Refers to the word 'edge' E. None of the above
Deca DV Team’s response:
It was a mix of itch and something else, not fully sure where this came from, flytraps having hairs and being triggered to close when they feel something.
A. Aquatic features like a jellyfish’s hood B. The body of the bioluminescent octopus C. The transparent winglike structures of the sea angel D. A satellite dish to communicate with its homeworld mothership E. None of the above
Deca DV Team’s response:
It was just meant to resemble aquatic features but dialed up to 11, maybe like a jellyfish’s hood and to make it look more ‘majestic’ and ‘pretty’.
A. Named after a DV Team member’s cat B. Named after a DV Team member’s fish C. Named after a television series character D. Named after a punk rock song E. None of the above
Deca DV Team’s response:
The person who had the idea for the dragon design also had that name for it, so we went for it. Don’t think it was meant to mean anything specific.
A. Spinky refers to the dragon’s plucky spunk when threatened B. Spinky is a combination of the words 'spirited' and 'spunky' C. Spinky refers to the dragon having spikes D. Spinky refers to the subtle pink colour on the dragon E. None of the above
Deca DV Team’s response:
Spinky just sounded cute and the dragon having spike-like features.
A. The furry creatures from Club Penguin B. A combination of puffy + Fluffles (parent to Puffles) C. A light and airy egg waffle dessert D. A combination of puffy + cuddles E. None of the above
Deca DV Team’s response:
Puffles was a mix of a few things, puffy like a cloud + cuddles which is a typical name for something trying to be cute. A bit of parody because the name sounds cute but the dragon underneath the coat is actually supposed to be fierce.
A. Canvas is based on the mosaic art style and the beard represents traditional terracotta coloured tiles B. Canvas is based on the bipedal running, collared lizard and the beard is an exaggeration of the collar C. Canvas is based on an art movement and the beard is a brush D. Canvas is based on the mythological faun creature and the beard is an elongated goat beard E. None of the above
Deca DV Team’s response:
Canvas was meant to represent the Sublime Art Movement, and the beard is a brush.

Thank you so much for the amazing contest! I know I’m late again in saying thanks, but this holiday has been REALLY busy with family and friends visiting after many years. I didn’t have as much time for DV, I’m sad to say, but the holidays are ending soon and I’ll get back into it.
I’m blown away that I got 5 questions right! I had no idea which answers were correct. TBH I thought they all sounded good lol! I think some of the answers you made up adlerist were way more believable than the real ones. 😂
I’m surprised that no one got Game of Thrones. I guess because the spelling was really different from Olenna but also the other answers looked really good! That’s really cool that Orlena is named after Olenna Tyrell!

I think Game of Thrones appeared too obvious. Not because of the name Olenna, but naming a dragon after a character in a show that highlights dragons — well, for Origin contestants, that might’ve seemed a bit on the nose. And as you said, 'Orlena' is a very different spelling than 'Olenna', so it would’ve been a leaping guess to choose Game of Thrones. 'Gold', 'innocent', or even The Poisonwood Bible looked more probable. Which reminds me, I was very impressed to see a couple players selected The Poisonwood Bible. I take it they read the novel and know Orleanna is a major character.

Today I happened to read through these and realised I got the last one right in my head but removed the wrong answers 😭 I was looking at the post thinking 'I'm sure I got 5 right' and then compared it with my answers and saw that I went for A for the Canvas one... kicking myself right now! 🤣
