You’ve analysed and examined every aspect of each event dragon. Now, let us know which Dunes of Magic dragons brought the Sun to the Vale and put the heat in your summer.
If you’re new to the polls or the Forum, here are some helpful tips:
1. You must be a member to vote. This is a restriction by ProBoards and cannot be altered. An account is required to keep track of votes and to prevent multiple votes by anonymous guests.
2. When you vote, it is automatically recorded. There’s no Submit button. Backing out or clicking away from the thread will not undo your selection.
3. If you accidentally vote for a dragon or warm up to another dragon later, you have until August 9th to change your vote.
4. The poll will close on Wednesday, August 9th at 11.00 PM MDT.
Also, in addition to the dragon ratings, I will include player feedback for the event. If you have any comments, suggestions, complaints, or compliments regarding the event structure, mechanisms, features, etc, please post them here, and I’ll pass them on.
Many thanks to everybody who participated — it is greatly appreciated by all!

EVENT FEEDBACK Requests 1. Please don't make combos difficult for the sake of difficulty. It really shows when the combo makes no sense for the dragon (e.g. Scarab used for Saharus, and Kann and Crawler for Alayzem). Sometimes, difficult combos will come up and make sense (e.g. Efreet’s combo), and we have plenty of difficult combos already. We do not need more added just for the sake of difficulty. If DECA focuses more on making combos relevant, and takes into consideration whether or not it might be too hard (e.g. Efreet's combo, though that could have been rectified by increasing Djinni's odds), I think we’d probably end up with a natural balance of easier combos and harder (but not unfair) ones, rather than most combos being too hard, unrelated to their dragon, or both. 2. It used to be the case that pretty much all returning dragons (apart from really cheap ones) had their price reduced from previous events to counteract the new releases. In the last two events it seems like DECA has stopped this, instead only decreasing the prices of the new releases from the previous event, and maybe one or two others. As events grow, prices really need to be reduced to reflect this — especially when the new releases were as unnecessarily expensive as they were this event. In my opinion, if new releases are all/mostly 10k+ EC, no returning dragons should be over 10k EC. 3. While I was really glad that 6/7 new releases from last event had 10% Co-Op odds, I’d rather have a balance of most events having a half-and-half of good/bad cloning odds, than one event have most dragons with good odds and the next only have a couple dragons with good cloning odds. The unbreedables especially should have good cloning odds — I personally think at the very most, only one unbreedable per event should have Co-Op odds under 8%. I also think it would be nice if the Co-Op odds could branch more from 1-1.5% or 10%. It would be nice if some dragons that would have otherwise been on the extremely low end could be 3-5% and maybe one or two that would have otherwise been 10% could be 8-9%. (Looking at previous event threads on the forum, of the hundreds of DECA dragons that were first released in events, only about 20-30 have had Co-Op odds other than 1%, 1.5% or 10%, and there haven’t been any for over a year.) 4. As discussed on the main thread, I think it would be good for DECA to be more careful when using dragons with a lot of elements in combos, especially for epic dragons; otherwise, we’ll get to the point where every newly released epic is a pseudo, which no one wants. And on the occasions when a combo does have a lot of elements in the mix, breeding and cloning odds should be higher than usual, to reflect this. There have been times when DECA has given a dragon fewer hidden elements than the ones contributed in its combo (e.g. Margento only having Prestige's elements rather than also Lunis') so removal of unnecessary elements (i.e. elements involved in a dragon's combo that make no sense for the dragon, e.g. Efreet being cold, plant, lightning and water) could also be a possibility. 5. While there will sometimes be events that don’t have an extra EC mechanic (or in this event’s case, technically do but it’s not practically useful), and some events will doubtless unfortunately have expensive dragons, those two aspects should never cross over in my opinion. It wasn’t fair that there was effectively no extra EC mechanic in this event and the new releases were obscenely expensive. I’d rather all events had an extra, useful EC mechanic and reasonably priced dragons, but at the very least please don’t have events with expensive dragons and without a decent extra EC mechanic. 6. There were dragons in Summerthings Magical that were added to this event, and this isn’t the first time DECA has shown they’re happy to have dragons two events in a row. For this reason, the dragons that were in The Dragon Bandwagon but not in Summerthings Magical shouldn’t have been removed from that event, especially the ones that were required. There were 10 returning dragons total added to this event from last year, and Paradise is already very large, so the dragons that people could have gotten in Summerthings Magical had they been available would have been tricky to get this event due to far too much choice. I’m not saying they shouldn’t have been added to this event, just that they shouldn’t have been removed from Summerthings Magical, especially the required ones; please add them back next year. Please don't remove dragons from their typical events in future unless there is a good reason for it. 7. Please can the Day theme go back to changing from day to night depending on the device's clock. Especially in events where there are night-specific dragons (and especially when they're required for breeding), it being permanently day (unlike when it's used outside of events) doesn't make sense and isn't fair. We haven't had a night event since Frostivale Yulebration, so people without the Twilight Tower are being limited way too much. Either this, or make the Twilight Tower (and as such the Weather Station) a lot cheaper than it is; no more than 5k EC. 8. Other than that, most of my requests are the same as previous events — like having a note that there are more days in an event than event daily gifts, either keeping all habitats in the main market as well as the event (which would be preferable - there are so many people frustrated by how it is currently; this is probably the most requested event-specific feature I see on the subreddit) or sending the player directly to the event market if that’s where the habitat they’re looking for is, and making it more obvious that unbreedables are unbreedable. I’ve also seen the request for an end of event timer again — events start at level 11, and before that level you get the ‘In Progress’ icon with a timer where EC count would be; the suggestion is to keep this timer after level 11. Certainly, a countdown for the final week or so would be helpful, since not everyone will be aware that the final limited is the countdown, and the in-game help section may not be the most useful due to not being incredibly obvious and people playing in different timezones.
Lastly, somewhat of a "pie in the sky" suggestion that probably won’t be implemented but I think it would be really great if it was. Could the limiteds be brought back in the two days of spending only (they don’t have to be breedable if DECA doesn't want that, just buyable) at the prices they were during the event? The main two reasons why I suggest this is in case someone didn’t manage to buy it the first time around (due to being busy on the limited’s final day for example) and because there are many people — especially newer, casual players — who spend EC on limiteds only to discover they wanted the next limited more, but now can’t afford it. This issue could be rectified if the limiteds were much, much cheaper — i.e. between 3k-8k EC every event — but I don’t see that ever happening. If the limiteds were brought back for the final two days, anyone who wanted to buy one could wait until all the limiteds had come and gone to decide which one they most want to spend their EC on. It's not as common as other requests, but I have seen a fair amount of people this event saying they wish they hadn't bought one limited as they liked the next one more.
Positives 1. Thank you for fixing the initial loading bug so quickly! 2. DECA was spoiling us with how many fan-made dragons there were in this event! I really love seeing them include fans’ works in the game. (Now if we could just get a eucalyptus tree decoration to encourage more koalas... 😉) 3. Although I would have liked more easier combos, I definitely appreciated Sand being required for Saharus and Mantasu’s combo being element-only. The recent events have all had at least one elemental combo which makes me really happy. 4. Thank you DECA for changing the default weather from Sandstorm after the responses it got! It’s also very appropriate for the Saharus dragon though, and I can see what DECA were thinking when they added it — and was also glad that they didn’t make it a requirement to breed Saharus, even though that would have been understandable. 5. I really appreciated how well most dragons were related to the specific event, and it was generally obvious by their designs. This is one of the benefits of having a theme as general as ‘Desert’ - and, despite the fact it's not specific, it also isn't vague (unlike A Thawsome Spring's theme). That’s not to say no events should have niche themes – I enjoyed the school event – but if DECA wants dragons, especially their designs, to be related to the specific theme of the event, clear, general themes will help with that. 6. As always, the dragons themselves are consistently good/great in my opinion. Relatedly, the dragons’ names were really well chosen; there isn’t a single one that wouldn’t be understood either immediately or with a quick Google search. 7. Thank you SO MUCH for making the new release breeding/incubation times reasonable this event!!! Especially given most of the dragons were epics, which generally have longer times. The combos themselves meant there were long possible fail times, but the longest incubation time of a new release this event wasn’t even a day and a half. Given some events feel like most of the new dragons have far too long incubation times this change was very refreshing, and I hope it’s a pattern that stays. I do still think it would be nice to avoid using the same incubation time as a dragon that can be a result of its combo, but that's less important in non-RBC events due to the icon trick. 8. Thank you for The Little Nile! 😁
My picks for this event are Oasian, Tutan and Aurum.
- My opinion on the fan-inspired dragons -
Although I do enjoy all three fan-inspired dragons, the two based from the winning entries of the Desert Community Contest-Nubis and Alayzem-were disappointing compared to the original designs. The changes made to them significantly downgraded their quality from the original design, which makes them a rather dissapointing sight.
Nubis was converted to a 3 dimensional format, which ruined the portrayal of hawk 's Jackal Dragon. Jackal was also greatly changed in multiple aspects - the wings, aura, and rings on the horns make it nice, yet also downgrade it from the winning contest entry.
Although Alayzem was the least changed of the three fan-inspired dragons released this event, its size makes it difficult to see. The change in coloration also makes it look a little less like bone, which takes away from the original design. Besides, its breeding combo is very unsettling, as not only is it not fitting to the design, but also the dragon's anatony as well. Two flightless dragons should not produce one with wings the size of itself. Period.
Oasian, on the other hand, had its design greatly improved from the original. Oasis was a rather basic dragon at first, but DECA filled in the missing elements by adding a turtle shell, giving the dragon some well-needed protection and adorableness. Besides, everybody enjoys seeing a cute and silly little turtle dragon - since turtles are great animals to begin with. The only downside with him is, similarly to Alayzem, that the breeding combo does not fit much at all.
In the future, I would enjoy seeing DECA adding swagons which hardly change from the original. Previously they did that with the first few they designed, although in recent times the fan-inspired dragons have been more and more different than the original. Mesmerus and Gravity might be exceptions, although Scryer, Igluit, Brutiful and Divi are all significant downgrades from the original.
Grimore is a bit different, as well as Oasian and Burrow, as they are based off of non-winning entries. Their designs have rather seen a bit of improvement due to a bit of help from DECA Games.
-My Recommendations-
After experiencing the event, there is one thing I would like to discuss - breeding combos.
First off is by far the most concerning thing about this event, and other recent events: dragon breeding combos for new releases. Recently, the breeding combos for most new dragons have been rather... bad choices. For the dragons with locked breeding combos, most of them, especially in the last year, have had a combo which is extremely difficult. One of the most difficult being dragons which require an evolution dragon as a parent. Just within the last year, there have been 7 dragons with an evolution-locked breeding combo: Crackle, Bumi, Greenge, Kotun, Sugarmitten, Diggy and Kage, - which is at least one evolution-locked dragon per event possible. There have also been numerous dragons with a breeding combo which is extremely difficult to attain, either due to the poor breeding chances of the parent dragons, long parent chain, or both. In the last year, Efreet (djinni + misfortune), Oasian (honuhonu + mylio), Alayzem (kann + crawler), Margento (lunis + prestige), Somnig (snooz + fae), Ancestor (panlong + redbeard), Lovonone (cupido + scorn), Lovesick (sweetheat + stoneheart), Aisa (verglace + zumi), Everfrost (dazzling + starshine), Hydnellum (wendigo + apocalypse element), Kage (eldritch + wrath), Brood (gatren + dracabra), Dortal (iden + kwall), and Ariesian (solarflare + fire element) all have difficult parent dragons to breed. And, there were also plenty of dragons which used parents which were released in the prior year, making them even more difficult to attain: Alayzem, Scribe, Somnig, Ancestor, Lovonone, Mesmerus, Divi, Elkar, and Aisa. And on top of this, many of them did not even fit the dragon, making them a lose/lose situation.
To make things short, please keep the breeding combos somewhat simple and fitting to the dragon.
-My opinions on Dunes of Magic-
Negatives:
- Most dragons were Epic for this event, which made it so that they had very poor co-op odds.
- Most dragons this event had a breeding combo that did not fit the dragon itself.
-The loading screen teaser dragon (Saharus) was rather underwhelming due to all that sand.
- The fan-inspired dragons based on winning contest entries had a significant downgrade.
- Efreet had an extremely difficult breeding combo.
-The prices this event were muchhigher then usual.
-The newly added sandstorm weather made the game both very laggy and hard to play.
-Like usual, permanent habitats in the event market cannot be bought in the regular Market
-Limited-tier dragons would not show up in the event market or Dragonarium for a short while after being released
-The park is set to day, while Efreet requires a night-exclusive to be bred, making it impossible to breed for some players
Positives:
- All three starting releases were inspired from community designs
-The sandstorm weather being disabled for playability
-Start-of-event bugs were fixed quickly
-The Twilight Tower, Relic/Monument of the Epics, and Weather Station can be purchased for EC
-Better Dragon Quality than past events
- Easier Breeding Combos this event compared to previous ones
-The new Little Nile path is a great and highly requested addition to the Vale
- Multiple new decorations to glorify your park; more than usual
-Co-op odds for epics were increased to 1.5% this event

I went with Oasian, Tutan and Alayzem (almost chose Efreet instead of Alayzem)
So some things I liked about this event were the introductions of new swagons (3 at that!), cool new decorations, and a new weather (sandstorm). Some people might not like it because of how it affects the game's performance, and that's ok
Some things I had a problem with: A few breeding combos in this event don't match the dragon (oasian having mylio as a parent, alayzem requiring kann and crawler for some reason, and saharus having scarab as a parent are a few notable examples) Misfortune being used in yet another combo (I mentioned it before but please stop putting it in combos, it's already required for 6 dragons with the addition of efreet, I get misfortune is permanent now but still)
Nothing else to say really, I did enjoy the event and most of the designs were pretty nice, looking forward to seeing what DECA has planned next

I was really looking forward to this event as a nice change from Pirates and water. It had the potential to explore a whole new world (pun not intended) and it included contest dragons, which is always fun!
First of all, I want to thank Deca for listening to our reps and including Glimmerwing not only in the Event Market, but also in the Last Day Reward list. I am over the moon to finally have a traited Glimmerwing!
Votes: I voted for Tutan for #1 who, in my opinion, far surpasses all the others. He fits the theme, is classic DV, has lovely detail and the most perfect egg to compliment him. This is how Nubis should have been drawn. Oasian came in second because he's beautifully crisp and very much what I had hoped for for "desert themed dragons." I placed Nubis third, not for its adherence to the contest entry, but on its own merits. He has personality, beautiful colour, unique wings and an adorable baby. He exudes epicness. Alayzem was a close fourth.
Fan Inspired Dragons: Regardless of the criticism, I want to thank Deca for continuing to run the design contests. They're a great creative outlet for the DV community and I believe they give Deca a bond with its player base that's really special. I actually thought Alaizem transitioned to in-game very well. It's different, but only modestly so and most people would have to look at the two side by side to find the differences. Deca has done similarly with most Contest Winners and I feel it's a nice nod to a winner that Deca does, in fact, like the design enough to only tweak it. Oasian was a huge change, but really only in so much as the original art was more 'guidelines' and Deca revamped it for the desert. I'm glad to read that the original artist is happy with the results! Jackal's changes, however, were... dramatic and undeserved. It's still a cool design, but why? The original design was already double thumbs up from the fanbase and presumably, Deca liked it too. Easy redraw. Done. While I firmly believe that Deca can do whatever it wants regarding the recreations, I urge Deca to use the feedback from this event to hone how it goes about modifying entries in the future.
Breeding combos: There were so many long fail this event. It felt like every other breed was almost two days long. This event is screaming for Runic Caves, easier combos (with fewer long fails), or higher breeding odds. Personally, I'd take a third yearly Runic event, but that's just me.
Prices: While I breathed a sigh of relief that I wasn't going to have to play Eggy Hatchy through family vacation time, the lack of extra currency generation was unfortunate given the low breeding odds. I was actually pretty impressed that the prices didn't inflate dramatically. 15.9k is still very high given that lack of minigames and the sheer magnitude of hard-to-breed dragons this event. I was very happy to see the decorations were priced quite low, particularly given how many new ones we got.
Decos: I think this may have been my favourite ever set of new decos! The Little Nile is pretty darn good and finally gives us the waterway many of us have been pining for. Thank you! The pyramids are beautifully drawn. The obelisk and oasis are nice too. I bought everything. Just a side note - I now need more islands. The pyramids take up a whole lotta room and I haven't even placed my Wizarding School anywhere yet.
The Sandstorm Weather: I admit, I turned it off. But I do really like it! It could use some tweaking (mostly that swirly line needs to go), but I was pleased to see a new, fun weather! I might turn it on between events for giggles, but it impedes my gameplay too much to leave on when I'm searching for hidden items.
Pedestals: Deca brought their A game for the pedestals too! Well, all but Nubis... I don't know what happened there, but using the original art for the background (that no longer matches the dragon - burn), and a baby head in the foreground (that in no way matches the actual baby) created a busy, unintelligible and ill-fitting pedestal. It should have just been redesigned with the new wings and the ankh or horns. That would have been EYE-POPPING! There were so many beautiful pedestals this event. Nubis' feels like it was slapped together using an early, alternate design off the idea board and was never reassessed prior to release. What an absolute shame. (Adlerist, if this fits better under Nubis' Rate a Dragon, please reorganize as required)
Overall it felt to me like Deca tried extra hard this event to keep everybody on-theme. I second the person who commented about the shorter incubation times. They were much appreciated, even if the fails were still super long. I look forward to Dunes of Magic: Desert Dessert next year (fingers crossed). Hopefully we see a few more desert animals like Oasian! Maybe Nubis can get an evolution into Anunubis /jk. Sort of.
Last Edit: Aug 4, 2023 12:16:09 GMT -6 by hawk: Where did all those extra Returns come from? Removed 'em. I hope.
There were some great looking dragons this event with awesome design, colours and animations. Dunes of Magic was a nice change from the Paradise theme and all the dragons were a good fit to the theme.
The three fan-inspired dragons included in the event were amazing. It is always welcome to see designs that fans have created being used as inspiration for new dragons.
The dragon eggs and decorations were also outstanding. Although, I was a little disappointed that the pyramid decorations were not the beautiful white pyramids tipped with gold on the loading screen.
This was a tough event with hard to breed or clone dragons. Both the breeding odds and cloning odds were too low for the Epic Dragons. In a Treasure event, breeding combos always give many dragons with long fails. A week is not long enough to breed a dragon that has nearly 20 dragons with a breeding time of over 24 hours as Efreet did. This leads to a lot of player frustration.
Some breeding combos don’t seem to make sense for the dragon they are used to breed – especially Alayzem and Saharus. And some parents are being over used. Misfortune and Gold are now needed to breed 6 dragons and Sun is needed for 7 dragons. An epic dragon doesn’t need to be used in a combo to result in another epic dragon. Please could there be a limit on the number of hidden elements that are given to a dragon? It is not necessary for a dragon to be given all the elements from the breeding parents. Having dragons with six or seven elements make them virtually impossible to clone, especially with the lousy cloning odds that the epic dragons had in this event.
Would you please expand the list of dragons that are used in a locked breeding combo rather than using the same dragons over and over?
The dragons in the event were too expensive. The total cost was 111,300 and that was only for the dragons. While it is nice not to have dragons that cost 16,000-17,000 and a big jump in price between dragons, the limited dragons were just started at a higher price point. The overall cost and number of dragons is about the same as other events for this length (eg Frostivale Yulebration), but the balance wasn’t right as there was no extra way to earn spice. The dragons should have been priced similarly to The Dragon Bandwagon event.
Thank you for adding Glimmerwing to the final daily gift. With Rifted Galaxy dragons impossible to get reliably in game, this was an easy final day selection for me.
If a hybrid dragon is introduced during an event, it is not necessary to include it in the event the following year. Or if a permanent hybrid is used in a breeding combo – eg Frond in Dunes of Magic. There is already a lot of content in the market, permanent hybrids that are easily bred should be omitted.
Not event related. The last theme for Dragon Draw was ‘Water Theme’. All the dragons offered were permanent, easy to breed dragons. Players might be more inclined to use Dragon Draw if the dragons offered were harder to breed dragons and/or limited dragons. There are so many groups to choose from – Apocalypse, Dream, etc or select dragons in an upcoming event or dragons from an event that has just ended. So many options.
Thank you for adding Glimmerwing to the final daily gift. With Rifted Galaxy dragons impossible to get reliably in game, this was an easy final day selection for me.
Originally I was going to pick Glimmerwing for the final daily gift, but then I recieved a cold-traited one through a minigame chest. Since I no longer needed Glimmerwing, I decided to get water-trait Valeodon instead.

I agree. Permanent dragons should never be included in the event market, especially hybrid ones since they are easier to breed. I also think that Sun could have been left out of the event market, as that one is fairly easy to breed as well.
Despite this, however, keeping Misfortune in is actually a good idea, as unlike the other permanent dragons in the event market, Misfortune is difficult to breed due to its very poor odds.

I personally don't mind it - if they're required in breeding and cheap. For example, while a player will probably get a Sun dragon fairly early on, it doesn't have the best of odds, so if they wanted to breed something like Pharaoh or Kann they might not yet have a Sun dragon. At the end of the day, permanent, required dragons being in an event market is a backup for people who want to use them for breeding but haven't been lucky in getting them first. I wouldn't want that to be removed, especially since constant events mean there is little time for newer players to breed specifically for permanent dragons if they also want to get limiteds.
I wouldn't want, say, Fulgurite to randomly show up in the Paradise event because it's not required for breeding Paradise dragons. But I do hope dragons like Sun continue to show up.
Many thanks to Deca for another inspired event. What an array of new dragons, great to see so many wonderful player designs included. Thanks too, as ever, to all on the forum team, your dedication, good humour and insights really make the Dragonvale experience.
Fantastic and beautiful new dragons, with equally beautiful pedestals. All the babies are so cute!
New decorations
Fan inspired dragons
Habitats for purchase with EC
New sandstorm weather
Requests:
Higher breeding and cloning odds. With most of the new dragons having more than 4 elements, and epics as parents (with grandparents), the actual breeding and cloning odds are dramatically reduced, making it very difficult to breed, and with long fails.
I wish the dimensions of the medium and large pyramid decorations were a little smaller. The large pyramid is even bigger than the largest giant habitat! In addition, it would be nice to have them similar to those on the loading screen (white with gold tips)
Without a lot of ways to collect EC, it would be nice if the hidden chests are of higher value.
Less expensive dragons, especially when there are not that many avenues to collect EC
Dragons without pawing or outstretched arms (e.g. Saharus and Efreet)
Thank you to Deca for another fun and relaxing event! Finally, cheers to our fearless leader adlerist, without whom we would probably all be lost, roaming in the desert forever.

Thanks for the great event, DECA! All the dragons were amazing. One thing I’d like to suggest: when EC can be earned from crops, please let players use Dragon Snaps, like we used to in previous events. Players can’t visit their park 10 times a day to earn all the EC from Jelly Plants.
Thanks to adlerist and the forum admins and mods for the great (and funny) information!
