So what item in the Market costs a ridiculous amount of coin/gems? We're not counting dragons, because they can all be bred for nothing, so pick something from the list, or post in this thread to let us know what else is too expensive.

Well I've been AWOL for awhile so I guess this is as good a place as any to wade back in. I'm going to say, the MOST ridiculously overpriced by far is the "Fire Statue" at $5M DC. I may be missing something, but as far as I can see, any value it potentially had was lost when the shrines hit the market.
I went with the gifting tree because as nice as it is, it's something which can only be bought with gemstones and gives yourself no advantage at all.
(Again it's nice you can gift more, but a social game should promote this without making it expensive)
I think you do get something back from having the tree. With each additional gem you send out, there is the chance of getting one back, so instead of 3 coming in each day, you could get 6, or more.
Put another vote down for the fire statue. Unless BFS gives it some type of animation where it actually burns--it is a FIRE statue after all--I will not be wasting my dragon coinon it.

I was thinking the same thing just a little while ago. My wife has adamantly refused to buy the gifting tree, but I firmly believe that by giving double the amount of gems, it gives me a greater chance of receiving more as well.

I don't really agree, but only because gifting is very poorly executed in this game.
You might consider that you'd get more gems in return, but really that mostly depends on wether they have a gifting tree too, and how many friends they have. On top of that you can't even send a gemstone to the same person whenever you have one available (though I haven't bothered to figure out why that is so).
If they want us to be social and attract as many people possible to the game, they shouldn't restrict our interactions that much.
A maximum of 6 people you can gift daily is really REALLY low
If you could get more gems each day, they would just need to inflate the pricing of gem currency items. I found having a few reliable friends difficult enough to get. I wouldn't want to be required to find more because prices would inflate.

Can only talk from my own experience. When I first started DV I made the rounds to the boards looking for other new people to the game, figuring we were all in the same boat as far as not having many people to trade with. Some of them have worked out very well and I still trade regularly with today, others have quit or never exchanged gems at all.
The good folks on this board have been very good to me, even though they know my list is several pages long and it could be a bit of time before I return a gem, but they do get returned eventually. (Unless they fall into the "others" pit, and then we just never know who got missed.)
People who have large friend bases are able to send gems daily to a wide variety of people tend to get more than 6 back per day. If the gem tree were larger and we sent even more gems out, there would be a glut of gems in the system making it difficult for BFS to pay their bills. Am pretty sure they have some pretty smart people on staff who have the math skills necessary to cypher out the balance point of gem gifting, and still make a profit.
Timing on the gifting of gems has always been a bit of a mystery. You have to wait at least 24 hours before you can send to the same person again, sometimes longer. My gem tree doesn't always take 24 hours to regenerate gems, sometimes more, sometimes less - it's always an unknown part of the game for me.
Hope you find a good balance point for you between gifting and number of friends to make the experience better for you.
