To celebrate the Forum’s 12th Anniversary, a former game has been revived and remodelled — Welcome to Guess the DV Things! This game is a modification from the winter event’s Guess the Dragon. It’s still easy to play, loads of fun, and members can win prizes!
Guess the Dragon was a revised version of the DV Discord’s game called DragonVale Guessing Game. Many thanks to Tayzers and the admins, mods, and players on Discord who developed the game (Tayzers was not sure who created it, but please know that the Forum deeply appreciates you!).
DATES
Guess the DV Things begins with the spring event on 28 March at the DV daily reset (14:00 UTC) and concludes two weeks later on 11 April at the daily reset.
HOW TO PLAY
For this contest, participants who post an image are called the Host. Those who guess the name of the images are called the Guessers. And the Winner is the participant who most recently won a point.
A Forum staff member will start the contest by being the Host and posting three images:
1. A cropped, close-up image of a DV dragon 2. A cropped, close-up image of a DV egg 3. A cropped, close-up image of a DV decoration, along with the name of the event that the decoration appears in (only decos available in events are eligible)
To guess the items in the images, simply post your answers on this thread. You do not need to spoiler tag. Please do not edit your post (edited posts will be disqualified).
The first Guesser who posts the correct names of the dragon, egg, and decoration wins a point.
The Host will reply to each Guesser’s post indicating how they’ve scored by providing one of the following responses:
• If three guesses are incorrect: 0 correct, 3 incorrect • If two guesses are incorrect: 1 correct, 2 incorrect (players will not know which answers are correct/incorrect) • If one guess is incorrect: 2 correct, 1 incorrect (players will not know which answers are correct/incorrect) • All three guesses are correct, and the Guesser is the first to post the correct answers: Winner
If there is no winner after 4-12 hours, the Host will post a clue for one of the images that has not been correctly identified. This will allow the Host to post at least 2 clues in 24 hours and no more than 6 clues. A clue can be anything from another cropped image of an item, a riddle, a poem, or trivia.
After the images are correctly identified, the next set of pictures will appear in 1-24 hours. The Forum’s staff will release them at different intervals to accommodate all time zones.
In the event that nobody correctly guesses all three images after 24-48 hours, the Host will post three different images.
WINNER’S ADVANTAGE
Once a player correctly guesses all three images, they are declared the Winner and receive a point. They are also given a choice. The Winner can either continue to be a Guesser, or they can Host. If they host, they will automatically receive one more point, in addition to the point they won for guessing the images. If they continue to be a Guesser, a Forum staff member will be the Host. The Winner will have up to 8 hours to decide. If the Winner has not logged in to accept or decline the Host position after eight hours, a staff member will post the next set of images. The Winner can contact a mod or admin if they would like to Host the next set of images.
If the Winner decides to host, they will have 12 hours to post their three images. (If they don’t post, a Forum staff member will post images, and the Winner may not receive their point for hosting.) The Winner/Host will need to check back at least 12 hours (or sooner if possible) after they posted their pics to inform the Guessers if they are correct and to post a clue if nobody has identified the images.
In the event that nobody correctly guesses the Winner/Host’s three images, the Winner/Host still receives their one point for hosting. And they can choose again if they would like to be Host or Guesser. If they select Host, they will again receive one point.
If a participant correctly guesses the Winner/Host’s images, they can either become the new Host and receive one point for hosting, or continue to be a Guesser. If they choose to be a Guesser, a Forum staff member will be the Host.
HOW TO POST IMAGES
In the Dragonarium, choose a dragon, egg, and decoration and take a screenshot of each, or use DragonVale Wiki and save the images to your device/PC. Select the crop tool in your photos and crop a portion of the dragon with two or more different colours (please see this post for information on how to crop an image). If you don’t have access to a third-party image host, you can use the Forum’s revived Attachments feature and upload images directly from your device/PC. Please see the following post for details on how to post three images with Attachments.
IMAGE RULES
1. Images for Guess the DV Things should have at least two different colours. The background and outline colours do not count.
For example, this image is acceptable because it includes the colours gold and two shades of green-blue from the dragon (the purple colour is from the twin background)
But this image is not acceptable because it only has one dragon colour, blue. The twin blue background and dark blue line colour do not count. (Fun fact: both images are from the same dragon and are right next to each other on the dragon’s tail).
Please try to select a portion of the DV object that is somewhat recognisable. The second image doesn’t provide many hints, but the first one does.
2. The cropped image does not to be a specific size. You can choose any DV dragon and egg but not a traited version (Rift exclusive dragons and eggs cannot be used). The DV decoration must be available during an event, and the Host must provide the name of the event. A dragon, egg, and deco can be used more than once, just crop a different section. If you have questions about how to crop an image, please see the post below.
3. The Host’s post should contain all three images and indicate which images are the dragon, egg, and decoration (plus the name of the event the decoration appears in). It should look something like this.
HOW TO WIN
Earn as many points as you can by correctly guessing the images and hosting. After April 11th, the Forum’s staff will tally the points. The three players with the most points will be declared the winners!

Due to a potential limit on the number of friends a player can have before issues arise in the game, I will only be able to add Forum members. Thank you, for your understanding, and please consider joining us!
To post images on the Forum, you can use a third-party image host. If you don’t have access to an image host, use the Forum’s revived Attachments feature to upload pics directly from your device/PC. To upload three images, the instructions are slightly different than uploading a single image.
THREE ATTACHMENTS
Open the Guess the DV Things thread. In the upper right corner of the thread, tap the Reply button and the Create Post/posting page will show.
1. On the Create Post page, click the BBCode tab. This will allow you to insert the images and move them around your post. 2. Type 'Guess the Dragon' and hit Return on your keyboard several times to allow space between your text and the image. 3. Tap the Add Attachment button.
4. The Add Attachment window will open. Click the + Add files… button (outlined in blue). If the image is on your device, select Photo Library. The photos on your device will show. Select the image and add it. (On an iPad Pro, from your photos, tap on the image to select it and tap Add in the upper right corner to add the image. Instructions may vary for each device.)
5. The image will upload. When the loading bar turns green, press the Insert button and the code for the image will appear in your post.
6. Click Done to close the Add Attachment window.
7. Press the Return key several times on your keyboard, then type 'Guess the Egg'. Tap the Return key a couple more times to allow space for the image.
8. Click the Edit Attachments button in the upper right corner and repeat steps 4-6.
9. Press the Return key several times on your keyboard, then type 'Guess the Decoration' and the name of the event the decoration appears in. Tap the Return key a couple more times.
10. Click the Edit Attachments button and repeat steps 4-6.
11. You’re done! All three images will be on the post. Click the Preview tab (highlighted in blue) to see the images and layout of your post. Click the Create Post button at the bottom of the posting page.
TIP: If you forget to tap the Return button or an image is in the wrong place, either highlight the image’s code and cut/paste it to a new location on your post…
… or place the cursor before the code (before the bracket) and press the Return key to move the image down a line on your post.

Various devices and computers will have slightly different ways to crop a photo. I’ll provide an example from an iPad Pro. Please google how to crop an image for your device.
1. Take a screenshot of the dragon in the Dragonarium. You can also use DragonVale Wiki and save the image of the dragon to your device/PC. In your Photos, tap the image to select it and tap Edit in the upper right corner.
2. The Crop icon will show to the left (circled in red). Tap the Crop icon and the image will be surrounded by a white frame. Place your finger on any corner and slowly drag inwards to crop the image (follow the green arrow). You can move the image to fit the crop box or use any corner to guide and shape the crop box to fit the area of the photo you need. Lift your finger, and the image will be cropped.
3. Tap Done in the upper right corner and post your image on this contest thread!

Just to clarify the above comment, I was answering in the order they were listed (i.e. Okenite dragon, Solary egg, Jill-o-Lantern decoration)
Very good! You now have the choice to be a host. 😄
Ah, I missed that part! I have a bunch of dragons left over from Guess the Dragon that I didn't get to use, but I'll have to find some eggs and decos too. I'll probably post within an hour or so
So, a point of clarification. There is only one host at a time, correct? So we could be waiting up to 12 hours for another chance to play?
Hmmmmm? Guess the dragon got chaotic and difficult to keep track of, but this seems like a lot of inaction and luck to log in and check the thread for an active game.

It does seem that way.
As for luck of logging in at the right time - Guess the Dragon was like that too in a different way. A player could correctly guess most of the currently open games. (I was guilty of that sometimes, I have to admit it was quite an addictive game.) At least this way you'd only be missing out on a game or two.
The 'Winner's Advantage' does have the... advantage (sorry) of meaning someone can't win two games in a row.
If people did want multiple games at once, I guess the staff could still have scheduled games, and the 'Winner's Advantage' games are just extra games. Maybe the staff could post a game every ~8 hours or so depending on how many of the staff are in different time zones. Then everyone has a reasonable chance to be able to participate. And the 'Winner's Advantage' could just be kept to the games that aren't posted by staff.
If there does end up being more than one open game at a time though it would make sense for there to be a list of open games at the start of the thread, so we don't have to keep going back to find the currently unguessed ones every now and then like last time. And/or maybe Hosters could edit their post with "GUESSED" once it's been guessed.

I like the idea of the host editing GUESSED when they declare a winner. I think if mods/staff run also (which I think is a good idea), they should have also have a label so that there isn’t confusion as to the winners and the staff, unless the idea is that staff start several winner’s lines. Now you’re waiting on one of us guessing to play (sorry, I have a headache and probably won’t be guessing soon). I think this is an example of figure it out as it runs.

There’s only one set of three images at a time. Unlike Guess the Dragon, it is more slow-paced. Staff will try to post at different times of the day to accommodate all time zones. If it’s too slow, we’ll look into the possibility of multiple sets of images to guess. We didn’t know if having three images would make it more difficult and how much.
