Gems - Super important to keep these for upgrading items during the game, first and foremost, the hatchery. Purchasing the Epic Breeding Island is probably number 2. DO NOT waste them on speeding up breeding or food production.
Colosseum - Buy this as soon as you are able and put in your highest level dragon that has the correct element. A Gold Medal win will earn you the coins that the competing dragon could have earned in 24 hours, 10% of the XP required to get to the next level and, most importantly, 5 of those precious gems.
Party Hats - DragonVale allows you to visit your friends islands and have a look at what they are doing. And when you visit them for the first time you will notice that 3 of their habitats will have a cone hovering above it. Clicking on that "Party Hat" will earn you coins but does not take anything from your friend. It's just a bonus for you. They are reloaded every 24 hours and they are worth more as you Level up in the game. So make a lot of friends, and go collect the party hats.
Gifting Gems - You will also notice when you click on the friends tab to go visit them, "Free Gift" is highlighted next to everyone's name. You can give a Gem to 3 people in your list, and this is not taken from your cache of gems, but comes from thin air (hence Free Gift). Again this is reloaded every 24 hours, and if you can find a few friends to play with then consistently exchanging gems is a good way to collect this precious resource.
Clearing your Islands - Eliminating trees and rocks from your islands is a good way to earn XP which will help you level up. You can also gain event currency from clearing obstacles, typically at 2 event currency per obstacle on a normal day, 4 on a double day. Therefore you may want to save clearing your new island for the next event.
Forum Friends - Finding a group of people that you can talk to for help, support and advice is so very important. Whether it be here or somewhere else, please find a place where you can talk about the game and share your experiences. It's certainly one of the most rewarding aspects of playing.
Habitats - You might be tempted to sell your small Earth habitat early on because the dragons there are slow earners. Their strength comes in the amount they can earn in between the times you can check the game to collect your coins, particularly overnight. They cap at a much higher limit than the Plant habitat which is so important when collecting coins.
The above info has been compiled into this post to make it easier for beginners to find the info they need. OP is below - Fletch
This is for the lurkers who have just started the game and need a boost RIGHT at the beginning. First thing you should ever do while playing DragonVale is to upgrade the hatchery with your free gems at the beginning. The Wizard will give you gems during the tutorial if you are at zero. So it's a win win. Especially for players who won't be spending any real money on the game. (At least before the addiction sets in).
Actually Poppy maybe we could start a thread for new players? Somewhere where they could jump in ask questions as they progress at early levels then we could help them?

Absolutely, I wish I knew this before spending those precious gems in speeding habitats or eggs. Upgrade the hatchery and start saving for the Epic Breeding Island. One way to earn gems is through the competition. This may sound simple, I and I have seen others who do not put the right element in the competition. If it is a cold competition , you must use a dragon with cold element. Winning gold will give you 5 gems, XPs and dragon cash. koala!
Looking back at my own beginnings of playing this addictive game, I would suggest only clearing your first island in stages needed to accommodate the habitats you have purchased. I was rather 'gung ho' and cleared away all the rocks and trees, and then replaced them with purchased trees I could move around. a pretty expensive exercise at a time when there wasn't much spare cash in the dragon-kitty.
It would have been a better idea to work with what was there as far as I could.

Although clearing islands is a good way to get xp early in the game and thus, level up. Another thing a lot of people fails to notice early in the game is that you can click on the party hats when visiting other people's islands. That remarks the importance of having friends, cause you get money AND gems this way.
New goal: Crown 5 more dragons. Treats needed: 26,214,400. Current treats: 14,000,000
I think for me I regret clearing the island bare... When I go to decorate I miss the natural rocks and trees...
Also one thing that I did right away was up grade my hatchery... That way I have plenty of room.. (wish we had move)...
And the very best thing I did was find and join a community like this one.. The help, encouragement, support, and friendships have been priceless.. This place has helped me and others thru some pretty ruff dragons and some pretty ruff personal issues as well as some great game triumphs in the game and in life...
So my advise to a beginner would be to find a board that fits you... Whether it is this one or another one.. And join!!!! If for nothing else some really great tips on how to breed those impossible dragons.. koala and never be afraid to ask those questions no matter how small, we all will be happy to help...
Dragon Dung One thing you're going to notice after you start collecting a few dragons is that the amount of manure really starts to build up. Sure you can use it on your flower beds and around your various trees, but production will soon outstrip the amount you can successfully use. You're then left wondering what to do with it, possibly thinking you can just throw it over the edge of your island to become somebody elses problem. If you can imagine how you would feel if dragon dung started raining down on your islands and your visitors, you'll quickly see that this is a bad idea. What to do with it all then?
Plant nursery's love it, as well as landscape gardeners. Start touching base with local businesses and you will soon find someone that will pay to take the excess off your hands. Another useful way of earning some much needed DC for your park.

Don't sell your earth habitat. In comparison to the plant habitat, you will think it doesn't earn enough. Remember plant caps at 500 and earth caps at 75,000. Keep the earth habitat.

Hello, My name is Jeanette and I am new to this forum and to the game. I have two questions that I hope you can answer for me. First, what is the difference in the dragon treats, besides the amount you get? Second, I want to get a Bloom dragon before they are gone on Monday. All of my dragons are level 7, do I still have a chance of getting one? I have, what I have read, are the ones needed to breed: plant, poison, flower and storm. Thanks so much for your time!

Welcome to the forum Jeannette!
Get those Storm and Plant breeding right away. Have you purchased the epic breeding island yet? If you have breed them there.
I got my two from that combination but a lot of folks around here got them from Storm and Lichen. (Lichen is Plant and Cold)

Welcome to the forum Jeanette!
Extensive testing done by our Australian Mad Scientist, aka Fletch, has caused him to conclude that levels don't matter in breeding. So you're fine with level 7's. However, odds of success are significantly better on the Epic Breeding Island.
Keep using the combos mentioned here and you WILL get a Bloom. Its only speculation, but i believe that Backflip Studios varies the chances of success from time to time - and I think they open the gates wide at the end. koala!

I totally believe the open gate thing. Was able to breed the Leap Year Dragon just before it was pulled. Don't give up!

I think i just got lucky. I just got my EBI and used it for the first time and i have a13 hour incubation after breeding. I read somewhere that the Bloom is that time frame. Crossing my fingers!

Congrats!
You most definitely got a bloom
