Etymology: References the genus Phyllanthus, which includes plants that are nickel hyperaccumulators and have bright green sap.
Description: Phyllanthus dragons look like they belong in the sea, but those flippers and wings actually help the dragon fly across the Hutan Rainforest, finding and feeding on the concentrations of metal in the soil and the barks of trees. Because of this unique diet, this dragon sports a narrow beak and secretes a green ooze that actually serves as food for the baby dragonlings that can’t fly long distances for food yet! As the great botanist Petralan put it, “that’s so metal!”
Design Inspiration: I took inspiration from Phyllanthus balgooyi’s sap for the wings/flippers that look as if they’re dripping green sap. I also took some inspiration from the leafy seadragon, which served as a base design while I added more draconic elements to it.
References (in my design/info):
-Name-wise, Phyllanthus is a genus of plants that accumulate nickel.
-The quest name references a slang saying that (at least in the US) means “that’s so cool!”
-The incubation time references the percent of nickel in the sap of two plants in the Phyllanthus genus (25% and 16%).
-“Hutan” loosely means “forest” or “jungle” in Indonesian, where Phyllanthus balgooyi lives (so the rainforest’s name really means “Rainforest Rainforest”).
-Petralan is a combination of Petra and Alan, which are the names of the people who discovered Phyllanthus balgooyi.
I LOVE both of your dragons! Phyllanthus is my fave of the two but it’s really close. The colors work really well together and match the description of the dragon, and I like their metal and bark diet very creative!!
Thought I'd share my contest submissions here. First entry below!
Hypano Dragon:
Elements: Air + Earth
Quest: Life Finds A Way
Incubation Time: 3:42:00 (222:00)
Etymology: A combination of “Hypuronector” and “Drepanosaur” (the extinct creatures upon which this design is based).
Description: On an expedition to the far-off Iscarits Basin, adventurer and dragon-discover Olsen Colbert came across this unique dragon as it glided from rock formation to rock formation. This dragon’s unique tail opens to easily catch the air, and the coloration provides a unique camouflage as the rock formations in the basin are dotted with small green plants. This discovery marked the first-ever dragon that could “fly” without wings. Once the news reached the Vale, wizards began adapting the concept of this dragon’s unfolding tail to the airships- they’ve never caught the wind better since this discovery!
Design Inspiration: I took inspiration from drepanosaurs (and from reconstructions of Hypuronector in general) to create this dragon design. I made the head more lizard-like and added some more draconic details. When coming up with a theme for Earth and Air, I began to try to come up with ideas that really incorporated both parts. After wanting to be a bit more unique, I began thinking of seed dispersal by wind (anemochory), but ultimately decided that a design like that would be better fit for Air + Plant. Enter my desperate search of “unique extinct animals” in an attempt to find something that fit. Finally, I had an epiphany. Animals that glide = animals that glide in AIR = animals that glide from the EARTH = animals that walk on the EARTH and glide in the AIR. With that, I knew I had my design.
References (in my design/info):
-The quest name references a Jurassic Park quote that I found fitting for both what it means and for the fact that the animal is extinct.
-The incubation time references when Hypuronector lived- around 222 million years ago.
-Iscarits is a scramble of “Triassic.”
-Olsen and Colbert discovered Hypuronector in reality.
This is probably my favourite design entry. I love how you have linked your dragon description with actual (extinct) creatures and people. You are very creative and have done a lot of research into ensuring that your dragon fits the air/earth elements.

Hello again, everyone! Didn't think I'd be posting again so soon, but with the release of the new golden hybrids I just had to update my egg redesigns. I'll just cut to the chase, shall I?
Here's all of the eggs as of now:
And here's Burrow:
And finally Aperture:
Thanks as always for the support!

I really don’t think you need to change them.
I know that’s kinda dull feedback, but it think you’ve got this egg design thing nailed down!

Totally agree! I don't think you need to look at changing them either - these are amazing designs, which you've done in a day of the dragons being released! I especially love the Aperture egg design.
(I think adlerist's search engine can only find bear pictures/gifs )

I saw other users post their contest dragons in this thread, so I figured I might as well share the entry I made for the most recent contest (don't worry, I already put it on Discord, so I'm actually entered)! I submitted it super last minute, but I do believe it made it in on time! Hopefully Deca Games will like it!
The Marigold Dragon
Even with many years of research and hundreds of unique dragons discovered in the Vale, certain things just don’t seem to make sense at surface value. When the marigold dragon was discovered and classified under the metal element, it left the wizard community baffled. However, no matter how often Gardenia was questioned about it, all she had to say was, "Trust me." One day, after hearing the same question over and over, she brought the community together for a demonstration to prove once and for all her classification had merit. One by one, she called each wizard forward to rub their fingers between the marigold dragon’s shimmering petals, and then it dawned upon them. The marigold dragon’s flowers had the same texture and properties as actual gold! At long last, the mystery had been solved, and everyone who participated in the event was generously offered a single petal each by the marigold dragon. What a merry golden dragon!
So anyway, this contest was pretty hard to come up with something that would fit the theme, but not be super obvious enough where everyone would end up using the same idea. Eventually, I came up with the Marigold dragon. There’s two main ideas that inspired the dragon. First and foremost: a play on words. Marigold. Mari-gold. Marigolds are flowers, and gold is a metal. Marigold. I’m funny. Secondly, I was inspired by the concept of fake and artificially colored plants. Apparently it’s something that people do to make cool plants, so I tried to utilize that in the design with the various color gradients.
Hopefully you guys enjoyed my design, even if it's a little unconventional! If there's interest, I could upload all of my past contest entries on here as well.

What a unique concept! It was definitely challenging to come up with unique designs for this contest, but I've seen so many great entries.

I really hope you win! I would spend serious gold to get the Marigold dragon in my Vale. I love the story you wrote as well!
And yes, if you’d like to post your previous entries, we’d love to see them! ❤️
Hi everyone! I’m currently working on my next DV-related project and want YOUR opinions.
When categorizing the locations of DragonVale, should I count the locations mentioned in quest names? I’ve already decided to take the locations mentioned in the old/outdated quest names (and the locations in the descriptions) but am asking about the places from the “new versions” of quests- i.e. Cape Calm, Whistling Woods, Yogo Gulch, etc.
Please feel free to provide your opinions in the comments!
Keep in mind that I will override any majority if I completely change my mind, but I will definitely take your opinions into account. Voting won’t close, per se, but try to have your opinion in by around 7:00 PM CDT. I won’t be available to comment/discuss anything until that time anyways. I eagerly await your responses.

'Keep in mind, regardless of what you say, I’m going to do what I want anyway, even if everybody disagrees.'
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you for the greatest laugh of the day!
I think you should consider mentioning the locations in the new quests if you’re incorporating the locations from old quests. But if it doesn’t fit, then no worries. It’s not like we’re going to check your work against the wiki quest list. 😉
So what is this new project? Are you creating a map of the Vale? That would be very useful for visitors and dragons who escape their habitat. We need a GPS for dragons!

I didn't even realize that it could be read like that! 😂 I suppose any disclosure is good, right?! Although I meant it more like "if there's a slim majority I might overrule it with my preferences."
I think I'll use the locations mentioned in the newer quests too; the only problem I might encounter is when there's a word that has double meaning- i.e. "heights" can mean "mountains or high areas" or just a more lax meaning of heights in general. Might have to do a few more posts for community opinions on which quests mention places and which have other meanings... 😅 Would something like that work in the main DV thread? Or should I keep it here?
I'm not wanting to reveal too much to ensure I don't make any promises (i.e. if life gets in the way and I can't finish something I promised), but a full-scale map is a part of it, yes.

Are you concerned about that one mantis from crawling in your dragon park with concerns of it not looking like a dragon. No fear! Feast your on this newly enhanced Modified Malefice Dragon!
Now all yours with Malefice x Metal Element! *cough
I thought Malefice was the closest we could get to getting a Gigan-like dragon. I even asked which traited would make it remind me of Gigan. (Or Preytor and the Deadly Mantis, two mantis Kaiju)
And then I got struck with an idea to create a fusion of the monsters. And here we are.
The baby was a quick-minute addition.
Now Malefice look Dragon-y now. Should be more suitable for DragonVale now.
