Hi everyone! I’m currently working on my next DV-related project and want YOUR opinions.
When categorizing the locations of DragonVale, should I count the locations mentioned in quest names? I’ve already decided to take the locations mentioned in the old/outdated quest names (and the locations in the descriptions) but am asking about the places from the “new versions” of quests- i.e. Cape Calm, Whistling Woods, Yogo Gulch, etc.
Please feel free to provide your opinions in the comments!
Keep in mind that I will override any majority if I completely change my mind, but I will definitely take your opinions into account. Voting won’t close, per se, but try to have your opinion in by around 7:00 PM CDT. I won’t be available to comment/discuss anything until that time anyways. I eagerly await your responses.
This sounds really interesting! If you need more names for the areas on your map or whatever you’re doing then yeah I’d say why not use the quests. Some quest title are pretty clever and others are not, so a lot aren’t going to work anyway.
Cape Calm, Whistling Woods, and Yogo Gulch I would definitely use tho!
Hi everyone! I'm trying to decide if some of the quest names reference actual places in the DV world. If you could take the time to fill this out to give your opinion it would be much appreciated! Let me know if this works, it's my first Google Form... docs.google.com/forms/d/1fB8TosNZGH3Djn4-bRw6zmkP1iQBmhOOrIE-2KguWPQ/viewform?

Okay, I completed the form. That was really entertaining, cheers!
Etymology: References the genus Phyllanthus, which includes plants that are nickel hyperaccumulators and have bright green sap.
Description: Phyllanthus dragons look like they belong in the sea, but those flippers and wings actually help the dragon fly across the Hutan Rainforest, finding and feeding on the concentrations of metal in the soil and the barks of trees. Because of this unique diet, this dragon sports a narrow beak and secretes a green ooze that actually serves as food for the baby dragonlings that can’t fly long distances for food yet! As the great botanist Petralan put it, “that’s so metal!”
Design Inspiration: I took inspiration from Phyllanthus balgooyi’s sap for the wings/flippers that look as if they’re dripping green sap. I also took some inspiration from the leafy seadragon, which served as a base design while I added more draconic elements to it.
References (in my design/info):
-Name-wise, Phyllanthus is a genus of plants that accumulate nickel.
-The quest name references a slang saying that (at least in the US) means “that’s so cool!”
-The incubation time references the percent of nickel in the sap of two plants in the Phyllanthus genus (25% and 16%).
-“Hutan” loosely means “forest” or “jungle” in Indonesian, where Phyllanthus balgooyi lives (so the rainforest’s name really means “Rainforest Rainforest”).
-Petralan is a combination of Petra and Alan, which are the names of the people who discovered Phyllanthus balgooyi.

Thank you!!! Imagine my surprise to find myself as one of the winners. But I was only a runner-up, not a top-prize winner; just for clarification. So excited!!!

Thanks for all the positive comments and support! I truly appreciate it. 🙂 And congratulations to all the other entries, both those that won and those that didn't. There were some amazing designs this time.
I'd like to provide an update on the feedback form I asked for earlier- so far I have had five entries! I honestly only expected one or two so five is definitely amazing. I won't make a final decision based on your opinions until about 24 hours from now (so if you haven't filled out the form and are interested, please feel free to do so!) but if you're interested where the voting's going I think I made it to where the results are public after submission. Please let me know if I set that up correctly.

Just a reminder for anyone else who wants to participate in giving their opinions with the quest names- there are less than 11 hours until I close the Google Form (so hop to it!) On the off-chance this reaches someone who hasn't already seen the link, here goes: docs.google.com/forms/d/1fB8TosNZGH3Djn4-bRw6zmkP1iQBmhOOrIE-2KguWPQ/
I'll post my final breakdowns and decisions at around 9-10 PM CDT, if anyone's interested/

Hah! I like how Sumi’s quest received the most comments.
I think there’d be a lot more participation if people didn’t have to login with their Google account. Sometimes people don’t remember their password if they don’t login regularly or use gmail. Maybe a non-Google survey would be better?

Okay, I changed the settings so people don't have to sign in to Google to participate. Let me sign out to test if it works...
Edit- it works without having to sign into Google!

Unfortunately not- it’s an early concept map created by Backflip. I’m using it as a reference for relative locations between places and thought it was a relevant centerpiece for my Google Form.

Thanks for making that change to the survey and thanks for suggesting it adlerist! I was one of those people who couldn’t remember my password and was going to look it up then come back to the forum but that was yesterday lol. It’s much easier to do the survey now thanks I finished it! Koala on your map!!

Congrats on your winning dragon design!! 🎉 Woah that is really amazing! I’m so glad you won, you really put a lot of work in you DV art and it shows 🐉🎨

Hello! I’d like to provide a breakdown of each name/question along with my own opinions and how I will proceed with their categorizations. I do understand that it’s a bit difficult to get invested into a project to which you have pretty much no idea of what it entails, so I’ll also provide a bit of a tease as to what I’m planning. Also, thanks so much to the ten participants- you’ve definitely helped shape my project. Let’s dive in, shall we?
Acrostic Sea
90% yes, 10% no
My notes: I’ll take this one as a location; that’s definitely where I was leaning too.
Final status: LOCATION
Brow Mountain
90% yes, 10% no
My notes: Again, this is definitely where I was leaning with this area too.
Final status: LOCATION
Budding Bayou
70% yes, 30% no
My notes: This one was more controversial but still a clear win for “yes.” This was my thought as well.
Final status: LOCATION
Burning Winds
70% no, 30% yes
My notes: Apologies for the confusion on this one; I had been using a template that didn’t really work for it at the start. I did change the form to reflect this but the damage had been done. The final percentages are maybe a bit rough based on previous responses but are pretty close to their actual percentage.
Final status: NON-LOCATION
Down Falls
60% yes, 30% no, 10% both/either
My notes: Not quite sure I understand what the one submission means that reads “can mean any other ruin if you ask me.” Maybe I’m just misreading it, but at least it doesn’t determine the final result. I feel the same that maybe this is a location, just with a clever name.
Final status: LOCATION
Fluff Bluff
80% no, 20% yes
My notes: Well, this one didn’t go the way I assumed it would! Personally I have no problem with a bluff being called “Fluff Bluff” but I do understand the reasoning that a single bluff isn’t consequential enough to mark on a map. I also understand that “bluff” has multiple meanings, but I do think it means “hill or steep area” for this one. Might make it a part of a larger, over looming location.
Final status: (A somewhat inconsequential) LOCATION
Hemlock/Mermaid Gardens
90% yes, 10% no
My notes: Again, this one didn’t go the way I anticipated- this time it worked in my favor, however. I do feel like I could really incorporate a natural-forming garden area.
Final status: LOCATIONS
Inky Heights
80% yes, 10% no, 10% no opinion provided
My notes: I definitely feel like this is a reference to a location. It might just reference the Berrywhite Mountains, but in my mind it’s maybe a section or separate chain of them.
Final status: LOCATION
Neverblue Woods
60% yes, 30% no, 10% no opinion
My notes: I’m torn on this one. On the one hand, it definitely fits the mold for a toponym. On the other, I could definitely see it as just being a play on words with “evergreen.” I do, however, like the wordplay, and I think this one can qualify as a location. 60% of you agree with me too, so that’s optimal.
Final notes: LOCATION
Northern Exposure
80% no, 20% yes
My notes: I feel as if I could definitely dream up a naturally-occurring “exposure” but understand why the voting went the way it did. I think I’ll just leave this toponym alone and location-less.
My notes: I definitely agree with you guys on this one. The use of “heights” initially threw me, but I do feel that, in this case, “heights” does not represent a location.
Final status: NON-LOCATION
Hall of Reflections
70% man-made, 10% natural, 10% not location, 10% no opinion provided
My notes: Agreed that this place isn’t naturally-occurring; I do feel like it could be a cool concept for a building or decoration though!
Final status: MAN-MADE LOCATION
Scaredy Cave
70% yes, 30% no
My notes: I could definitely argue this one either way, what with its reference to Voltaic. However, I do agree with everyone that it’s a location.
Final status: LOCATION
Soaring Heights
50% yes, 50% no
My notes: Our first 50-50 split! I do feel like it’s a location (possibly for Air Dragons) mainly because it just wouldn’t make a ton of sense to say “soaring heights” in reference to how high a dragon soars / is soaring. Plus “Soaring Heights” sounds like a cool location name.
Final status: LOCATION
Tentacle Terrace
80% yes, 20% no
My notes: I’m so glad people think it’s a naturally-occurring location! I can’t wait to imagine the possibilities here.
Final status: LOCATION
Twice Leapt Valley
90% yes, 10% no
My notes: I have to say, I thought this one would stay a 100% yes. I do believe it’s a location, but maybe a location that only appears with the Double Leap Year Dragon.
Final status: LOCATION
Writer’s Block Bluff
60% no, 40% yes
My notes: This one definitely was the most controversial apart from the 50-50 one. I do feel like this is a location, but maybe another less-consequential location like the other bluff. The wordplay here is quite amusing too, so I think I might keep it as a location.
Final status: (Another somewhat inconsequential) LOCATION
And that’s all! Thanks again to everyone who provided their opinions; if you’d like to explain your thinking or disagree with my verdicts then please let me know, either here or through a PM. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Also, as promised, I’ll describe a bit more in-detail about this project.
I have always been infatuated with the lore of this game- so much so that I evaluate dragons based on their adaptations and value in the lore instead of just aesthetics. Sure, a dragon looks great, but does it really fit with the feel and established lore of the game? (Looking at you, Yarr…)
I’ve also always loved geography and cartography, and as such I’ve decided to tackle an extremely immense project- a DragonVale Geography Book (still working on a slightly cooler name- would something with “tome” be cool?) complete with a full map of the ever-expanding DV world and some smaller, more in-depth maps covering a smaller amount of area but in much greater detail. Each location will have a page dedicated to it with artwork or a map (or both). I’m not the greatest landscape artist but I will give it a shot; just keep in mind that if I attempt to do the landscape art then the project might take a few years! Alternatively, I might release a version with just the maps and then I’ll add the art later.
Most details are still in the works as of now; however, I do feel confident in sharing this much. If anything changes or I can’t finish due to real-life reasons, I do apologize for any inconvenience I may have caused. But of course I won’t focus on that now!
As always, thanks for the support!
Best regards,
OboeKade
Edit: so sorry to the eleventh person! It appears I *just* missed your responses.
