Mole (with cheese grater) did quite well in battle against the Caterpillar/Laser combo. He was level 14, backed up by a level 13 Carrier with the robux boost (so not the rockets).
Continuing testing to see if I can find something better/other than Grinder as lead bot against the Caterpillar/Laser team, my level 14 Rock bot with his Axe failed miserably. He was backed up by the usual Carrier, and he did about 50 damage to the Cat, taking over 100 in return.
I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that the Grinder Army will prove to be the best way to go; the only things that out-earn it in mining zones are Carrier, Rock, and Floodlight, and both Carrier and Floodlight get charge boosts from their gizmos making them unlikely lead bots.

Grinder's red disc is Speed+++. One would think another bot with the same type weapon would be awesome, like Grinder.
Tried Safety with the Stop Sign, which is also Speed+++. Got creamed.

Had an opportunity ity to see if sticking my floodlight up against a mole would produce the same results that kicked my mole to the curb... Only difference in setup was that my floodlight was in a support role - but the AI mole merely said to my floodlight upon being attacked "I fart in your general direction" and then followed that up by telling him: "Now go away before I taunt you a second time" It Was made so much worse by the bad french accent he used (MP - QftHG reference for those who missed it)
Bottom line: AI floodlight decimates player mole, and player floodlight (in support role) completely ineffective against AI mole
If you get a chance to try your floodlight in the primary against a mole, that could be interesting information. There has been some speculation on the wiki that hybrid bots use different attack types depending on whether they are lead or support.
On the other hand, I'd hate to see you waste another battle opportunity.
Before I spend a bunch of gems to test it out, does anyone else have a high level Spray Bot with Poison you could try as a lead bot against the Caterpillar/Laser team?

I have a level 10 with poison that I could level up. What do you want as a back-up?

Back it up with whatever (I usually go with Carrier, since I'm leveling them up). Mainly I'm curious to see if it is viable as a general lead bot, since it earns a good bit more than the Grinder.
I was thinking of trying the solar bot with solar reflector as lead bot, with repair as support. Just need to level it up to give it more of a chance.
Might be worth trying the Solar in the support position with whatever as the lead. That would hopefully give it enough time for the charge+++ to kick in.

LMAO, well that was ugly!
Caterpillar had the most powerful hits. Took Spray out with 3 hits. 148, 107, 96, gone. Carrier, Laser and Spray all were in the 42 - 76 range with their hits.
Hrmm. Well, given that, I think we can categorically say that Grinder (red disc) is the single best choice for the battle arena at this time. You can quickly breed as many as needed, and nothing else in the game can match their income while helping level up other bots.
The only other ones that could compete for income are either support specced (Carrier, Floodlight, Aloe, Flower), inept against the ubiquitous Caterpillar (Rock, Spray) or not enough of an income advantage over Grinder to be worth the loss of mining's zone max bux (Bot-anist, Harvester).
So I'll be continuing my slow march toward an army of mining zones filled with Grinders at least until they change up the arena opponents and make us start choosing bots based on matchups. There must be something out there that can take down a red disc-Grinder!
Has anyone else seen new bots in the arena? Last night i faced off against a yellow-egg-shaped bot wielding a battle axe. He smacks for 97 a hit. The next arena fight was against a green & blue bot holding a purple medicine vial. It also has a green medicine sign on its chest. (I snagged a pic of the last one.)

Has anyone seen these new bots?
Possibly the Geo bot with battle axe and the Botanist bot with beaker (well that's what it's called, even though it looks like test tube to me). These are science hybrids available to breed from level 16. Do they look like any of the bots on the chart on pg 1 of this thread?

Indeed they must be those KiraT, Im a lvl15 so I hadn't seen the Science Hybrids yet. Thank you for keeping me straight.
I don't know if this has been said yet, but at level 11, there's a forever pair consisting of caterpillar bot (lead), carrier bot (support). Their levels vary from 7-9. For some reason, the caterpillar's name seems to be usually nemo.

Yeah, isn't that odd how we got such an assortment of opponents, then it changed to basically the same pair? I'm @ level 17 and the system stays this way. Nemo was in my arena, too. That guy really gets around. He should look very tattered though, because my Grinder beat him severely.

Red disc is next for me. I would think there is something more to the speed weapons then in the write- up. I didn't get the sense it would be that powerful......and don't believe it is that powerful on the other robots.

I'm not complaining though, it isn't exactly an opponent that wipes me in a shot or 2...
That caterpillar is showcased quite a bit. You might be right about it being a dev favorite.
What are you using for your lead bot?
