Hi all. At this point in time I hav two questions. First is a longer one. Does breeding take into account the prior familial history of a dragon? Lets say I breed plant and fire and get a flower. Pure PF. Then I breed that with a lighting and get a firefly.
This article also said that dragons bred by higher level dragons were "better" for purposes of breeding. This statement falls into the same category. Do two level 10 dragons make a better dragon than two level 5 dragons?
Second question is: what are the better cooler dragons to try for breeding the dark? For some reason I am not having any real feelings on this one. Right now concentrating on jet and amethyst so until I get one of those my breeding caves are occupied.

Hi and welcome.
To answer your questions 1. There is no evidence whatsoever that the specific parents of a dragon have any effect on its breeding outcomes a firefly with a plant parent will breed exactly. The same as a firefly with a cold parent. Likewise, another early theory that claimed putting the dragon in the left or right side has been discounted as having, at best, negligible effect.
2. There is no evidence at all that a L10 dragon will outperform a L5 dragon in any way. BFS claim that having two parents at L11 or above will improve your chances at getting "rare" dragons. This means opposites, gemstones and epics. The evidence indicates that this improvement is only slight. A better option is to get and use the island breeding site as this pretty. Much doubles your chances of a rare dragon. Note that upgrading the island and cave have no effect on you breeding chances. Just your breeding times. of course you can try more times with the upgraded sites.
3. It is really up to you what you think the cooler dragons are. You can choose preferences based on aesthetics, earning potential to complete a set or whatever takes your fancy.

Good grief, after abandoning me for a couple of weeks it would seem the koalas are well and truly back. I got a 28 hour breed time on my island this morning (Amethyst), so I believe that's me now got one of each of the current limiteds (I'm not trying for doubles/eggs particularly). That gives me some breathing room to work on the backlog of hybrids I don't have (most of the Light and Dark ones, several Metal ones and the odd one from elsewhere).

THANKS! so what you are saying is that i can abandon the crazyness i have been doing( you try to keep track of what parents with what breeding make which dragons- oy)and can now stop naming my dragons 12FAEWP and instead call them something more fun, like fred or booger.
as to the parent level of dragons, it was not sayin gthat higher leveldragons make better dragons( sort of) it was saying if you start with level 10 dragons ( say fire and plant) and they makie a dragon, and then that dragon levels to 10 and breeds with another level 10 dragon bred in thesame way, that their offspring woudl be more capable of brreding higgher level dragons than say the same dragion bred from 2 level 6 dragons from varius combos.
i think i have just freed up some serious thought time here. whew. probably not a bad thing.
amethyst- does the fact that it is not in my market mean that i cannot get it via breeding yet? ( my kids seem to think so) i am still pluggling along getting 8 hrs at a clip, but wondering if i am wasting my time.

I got Mirage on the 1st try when it came out last Thurs' night, and Shadow has finally visited my island this morning, woot! A tad disappointed that we did not get a Chinese NY Dragon though. Oh well...

The level of the parents at the time of breeding do not affect the offspring in any way. Basically, you might want to think of the egg as the starting point of the dragon's life. A Flower egg is the same whether you've bred it with level 10 dragons, level 4 dragons, or whether you've purchased it in the market.
Perhaps you might have read the bit that says that the level of the dragons gives you a higher chance of getting the rare, limited or epic dragons. This is true, although most have stated that the higher levels don't give that much better odds.
You may want to check if you've got an update for the app if you're not seeing the Amethyst in your market. I think you may not be able to breed it if it isn't in your market, since we've typically used that to check the availability of the limited dragons.
I've been trying dark + sand for mirage and light + root for shadow but had no luck so far. Those of you who were successful, could you tell me which were the winning combos?

I used the same combos as you do. Both of mine was/is bred on the island.

Yep. The grandparents of an egg have no effect on the egg. Nor for that matter do any random variations in the parent. E.g. The parents level. All they contribute are the elements. How the elements combine is up to a roll of the dice. In the early days of DV there were theories floating around like the one you seem to have gotten hold of, but they have been pretty much disproved by genius statisticians like Robotron and our very own Pixie after doing thousands, if not millions, of test breedings.. I don't ask where they got all the gems they needed.

No luck at all yet for shadow. I have my first mirage breeding from hypnotic + dark in the island.
Basically, i am using pairs that can give me other magic dragons that are missing from my line up.

Like sand in an hourglass, so pass the hours between breeding dragons. It's almost as if there is a glass wall preventing my from getting to these hybrids. I sometimes feel like I'm left in the dark trying to find the root of my koala problems. But I will not cave! There is a light at the end of this tunnel, and it is no mirage. I will not let a shadow of doubt stop me from getting these new dragons.
