I'm pretty sure dragonade is more complex, involving hot, late summer days, a big outdoor stage, and a bunch of rockin' dragons donating their time for a good cause. The drink would have special secret ingredients only the best catering dragons know, that protect from heat exhaustion, dehydration, bug bites, and hearing loss.

In German
1.000.000 = Million
1.000.000.000 = Milliarde
1.000.000.000.000 = Billion

My little daughter asked me what would be the greatest number of those millions, billions and trillions. We looked it up and learned that it is a googol or a googolplex.
Googol is 10 ^ 100 and googolplex is 10 ^ googol
And yes, the search engine Google took its name to reference to this number. By that they wanted to express that they can find so much links.

When I was younger, an Australian English billion had the same sense as your German billion i.e. a million million (10¹²). There was also a milliard. Sadly, the American English version where 1 billion = a thousand million (10⁹) seems to have won that particular linguistic battle. I still hold out hope for Flavour, colour etc. Auto incorrect keeps trying to change them though. And Aluminum is just plain wrong!

So as of last count, exactly how many countries are divided by the same language?

I've got a style manual from Chicago, another from Oxford, another from the EU, another from the WHO... just to keep me on track. But I never counted.

The Chicago Manual of Style is quite possibly one of the best books ever written. I'm less fond of the Oxford Manual of Style, but Oxford University Press has a dictionary I'm quite quite fond of.

For any self-identifying word nerds or those with an interest for interesting things, there's a great book called The Meaning of Everything by Simon Winchester: a "biography" of the Oxford English Dictionary. This book, both reading it and contemplating it, kept me up for weeks.

That depends. Are you limiting yourself to English, or are you including other languages (like American^* ) too?

Then of course there are the countries divided by different languages. Like Switzerland and China.






^* Actually I prefer the term Usoniam. Why should one imperialist country lay claim to two continents?

Someone told me once India's last count was 270. I counted 4 alphabets (Latin, Urdu, Devanagari, Tamil), but Indian friends keep surprising me.

And oh, I'm nerdy by profession. Stay behind a screen and write for a wide variety of people. Some of them with style manuals. That's how I amassed the collection (yes, I have more...)

And I want to point out that not only is your dragon samwich picture hanging in the foyer, but your other paintings are also hanging in various places around the club. Thanks wapatango, but I really like stretching out on this couch. It's close enough to join in the conversation, and I still get to watch my dragons through the picture window. I will enjoy some dragonade, though, if there's any left!
