Let's talk about the challenges to organizing and managing competitions between DragonValers on the Android platform.
Let's start a list of players who WOULD sign up for a comp. Let's see how many of you there are. Understand that to participate, you would be adding each other participant to your FB account.
I don't know a thing about FB, so educate us and other Valers about how you can configure FB to do... stuff... I dunno.

Players who participate in the contest would have to be willing to add relative strangers to their facebook accounts, at least briefly to gift gems. Which would involve sharing one's facebook account information (either in public on the site or through private messages to other contestants).

I would participate, however will have to give the other questions some thought. I am lucky enough to have some really good people I met thru DV as gem/party hat friends but I could see where this may be a little bit of trouble. Will post more later, just swamped here in RL.

When I was playing a Facebook game called Tribes, I added all my "Tribes playing friends" to a friends group called "My Tribe" and then set my default posting to NOT show to people in that group.
(I'm on Apple so not applicable here. But just a Facebook thing)

I have only just seen this, and agree. I made a list for DV, and changed the settings so that posts only show in that list, and not in the news feed.
I'd be happy to have competitions, and also a gem shower thread for androiders.
Kindle park1: nearly all dragons are frolicking in their habitats! (A Thorny little problem to resolve...)
Smartphone park2: Geode, a dragon with rocks in! Still to breed 4 dragons...
Let's see how many others would add their participation to a competition, just to give us all an idea of the number (though we know it would grow over time).

Go!
I would sign up. I already have a gamer group that is set up to only see gaming things and none of my personal info. Would be happy to work up a how-to post for others who want to do the same.
You keep saying all participants have to friend all other participants, but I had the impression you only had to friend the winners so as to send them gems? As far as the setting up part, someone(s) would have to moderate the comp to keep track, just like the moderators do for the GC group. That person(s) would be the one who needs to friend all competitors and check the parks for compliance, right?

That's true as far as it goes, but A-Team members who are on the facebook platform are few and far between. That places a heavy burden on our one and only. G'day BS
The GC competitions tend to be self policing as enough curious members keep tabs on each other. It is not unusual for the first we mods know of an infraction (real or imagined! ) is a PM from a concerned fellow gamer. it is certainly easier to do since the dragonarium made its appearance, but the A-Team have lives too.
Main GCID: GregDarcy Secondary: GregDarcyToo All gems friends spoken for. Happy to accept friends for party hats. I blame Apple's auto incorrect for all my typos. I actively discourage challenges. All challengers are unfriended.

You have lives also.....really?

I am so IN.. I do use my FB for real life but have always used the privacy settings when adding new friends who are Dragonvale Players. Just right click after friends approved and scroll down to check restricted after.
I think FB status, photos and shares are not viewable to those on the restricted list, so I don't have to change my privacy settings every time I post on Facebook.
The community here would be best to create a fan page on FB for android users and then those of us from here could go there and opt in for a chance to enter the challenge. In order for it to work ffor gem showers, everyone would need to be friends with everyone else.

I have been playing DV on Android since February 2013 without any friends. When FF Festival started, I sent a couple of friend requests and got quick responses. I now have 12 total strangers as FB friends. We have been exchanging gems daily without any problems. However, I will be reluctant to make hundreds or maybe thousands strangers as my FB friends.

I don't think you will end up with hundreds, let alone thousands of FB friends. Assuming that it works the same way as the GC competitions, you really only need to friend the winners in order to honour your pledge. Most pledges are simply to the winner or winner and second. So that would be at most two extra friends per competition. Maybe three if you pledge to third as well. But you control that. So at one competition per month it would take several years to build up into the hundreds. I also assume you could simply unfriend them after you have honoured your pledge. Or is that not easy on Facebook?
It is a bigger issue for us staff. We need to police the competition. So we would need to friend everyone on the competition in order to confirm compliance with the rules. And only one or two staff use non iDevice gear so the burden would be very heavy on them. They would end up with lots of friends very quickly.

I am on Facebook, so I could help to police these competitions if they do become a reality. Some players in this thread have also commented that they restrict the amount of personal information that they share to DV players they friend on Facebook, so we could possibly write a guide on how to do this so that players can feel safer about adding strangers on Facebook. This could possibly be useful for Apple users who use Facebook as well.
Before I joined the forum I friended some players through the DV Facebook page, and while I didn't really feel the need to restrict their access to my personal information, I can see why it's an issue for most players.

As mentioned previously, I will happily give back to the community by writing such a guide if requested. Writing web documentation/tutorials is one of the things I do at my job. Speaking of which, I found out today that my current contract expires in mid November, so if anyone knows of web developer jobs or needs design/development help in Illinois, I'd love to hear about it.
Edit: Also, I would be willing to co-moderate a competition, to help keep the moderators from wanting to throw us all into GregDarcy's BBQ fire pit!
