Meadowphoenix is correct, Plumewing's types are Air, Fire & Rift.
But, to breed a Plumewing, you only have to combine an Air trait with the Rift element. Maybe that is the reason for the confusion?
Here's a list of the breeding results for Air Rift X Plumewing:
Oh my... You're right! Thanks for clarifying!! That truly is mind boggling...
Now I'm confused. Am I the only one who thinks this is not correct? Until this post I thought a rift dragon (rift exclusive dragons as well as standard dragons with rift trait) CAN'T inherit an element from a trait? In my opinion they can inherite elements from elements of their parents and traits from traits of their parents or the rift alignment. In the breeding example given here the Plumewing has inherited the air ELEMENT from the Air Rift Dragon, because ARD has the element air. In this case Plumewing inherits the Air trait too, because that's the only reason he gets a Plumewing and not a standard Blazing or Inferno without any rift element. Of course you can also get a rift version of Blazing or Inferno from this breeding combo, but that's just pure luck and depends wether they inherit a trait or not. The trait just decides if your breeding results in a dragon with rift element (only dragons with trait also have the rift element) but not which of the basic elements it inherits.
At least that's how I understood breeding in the rift until now. Am I wrong...?

I think your theory is still correct. Some of the rift-exclusive dragons have different elements from those in their breeding combo. For example, Thunderbird requires earth and lightning with the fire trait, but the dragon itself is light and dark with the fire trait. In the case of such dragons, it seems like the trait is the only part that gets passed down. I think Plumewing is confusing because it only requires 1 element to breed, but then retains that element and adds another element into the mix.
Either way, I think the main rule still holds: for dragons without locked combinations, only elements contribute to the resulting breed, not the traits.

That part is wrong. There's no inheritance with elements, just breeding rules that can be satisfied.
For example, if there's an air trait in the combo, it can result in Plumewing, which is air/fire. But the elements don't matter at all. You could be breeding dark+plant or cold+water or whatever and still get a Plumewing.

Yes, that's how I understood it. But I left out locked combos like that, because it is getting more confusing to involve them, when trying to understand the basics.
I have achieved what my Mum thought was impossible... I have bred all the new Rift dragons - no cheating, no using more than 2500 Etherium breeds - using only patience and a step by step approach. It is possible and I have come to the conclusion I like the Rift 😊
Still need the pedestals, but Im going to try for the Halloween Rifts first & back to trying for the pedestals 😁

I think we're both right and wrong. GENERALLY there is inheritance of Elements, except a dragon has special breeding rules. Which is the case with Plumewing. I just looked at the original pictures of the BFS ingame breeding hints, it's much clearer with them.
BTW: do we have screenshots of the breeding hints for the two newer rift exclusives, which aren't linked in the OP?

Day of the Frostfire Dragon! Got one with air and one with dark trait. Also two Spectres (one with trait, one without) and a Bone with fire trait. My mothers account (which became actually my second park) got 3 of the traited Spookies today. Kind of making up for the last two days without result.
So I finally got back in Dragonvale a few days ago. Things seemed to be going well until last night when a blazing dragon egg got stuck in the rift breeding cave. When I try to hatch it, the hatch window just sits there and the dragon never gets to a habitat. I have to close the game and when I go back in I can play except I can't breed in the rift because that egg is just stuck there. I emailed BFS support but they don't seem able to help. Oh well. There is really no sense playing in the rift when i can't breed anything because that egg is just stuck there. Too bad support couldn't just pop it out of there. Support doesn't feel very supportive, but it's probably just me feeling bad cause I can't play again. Not sure what the point of this post is, except I feel like sharing my misery with people who will understand how much of a bummer this is.

☹️😢😥😣 cynmed , I s'pose you've done all the tricks, force close etc? What about the scary nail biting backup, uninstall, reinstall?? Feel for you, tech is so frustrating at times. I'm sure some of our techy valers will chime in with ideas.... Meantime, forget the Rift is there and enjoy the 'usual' spooky funfair as best you can 😳🐨🐨🐨🐨🐨🐨
Sudden out of the box idea; i dont know what device you are playing on, but can you somehow use something else to access your park, using the register/link park method, and see if another device can hatch ( or, ahem, break) that egg out of there???

Ya, I did uninstall and reinstall, no luck. I've tried everything I can think of including removing most apps from my tablet. Not that I keep much on it because I really just use it to play Dragonvale. The only thing I haven't done was to try the factory reset. I did try that when I couldn't log onto to Dragonvale at all the last time and it didn't work so I hesitate to try that again. I did try another device and no luck there either. I don't know what's up with that egg, but I'm sorry I ever bred it, LOL.
You make a good point though, I can play and enjoy the event and just stay out of the rift. I am grateful for that. Thanks for reminding me. I am certainly in a better position than I was when the Rift started and I couldn't even get into the game at all. I appreciate the pep talk, it was just what I needed.
Backflip says that if bred in the rift, the spooky dragons like Spectre, Bog etc., can acquire traits. But how can I breed one in the rift if I can't move the needed dragons INTO the rift. I must be misunderstanding this badly.

Well...they want you to totally breed everything spooky again in the rift. And not all breeds get traits. Your normal spooky dragons still count for the dragonarium but now you have the chance to breed rift spookys too. Joy
Soooooo. Breed fire rift x earth rift and go for rift bone. Or cold rift and earth rift to go for rift ghost

So I have to pick combos according to the sandbox using just whichever necessary dragons are currently in the rift. Is that the way it goes?

The Plumewing offspring seems to follow the rules you outlined (which is how I understand Rift breeding to work, as well). The air trait came from one of the parents since they both have the air trait, themselves. The inherited trait didn't come from an element because, like you said, that is not possible.
Air Rift has the Air element and an air trait. The other parent, Plumewing, has 3 elements- Air, Fire, Rift, and it also has the air trait. The offspring Plumewing inherits the Air element from either one of the parents, the Fire element from the Plumewing parent, and the air trait from either one of the parents.
Plus, supposedly Air Rift X any dragon can produce a Plumewing, because all Plumewing requires is an air trait and Rift element. None of the other elements in the parents matter.
Out of all the special Rift dragons, Plumewing and Kampos are oddballs in that way. Speaking of which...
Looking again at the results, the only one that doesn't make sense to me is the Kampos. Where the heck did he come from?? There is no water trait in either Air Rift or Plumewing. No water to be found, anywhere, in those 2 parents.
Kampos is supposed to be like Plumewing in that all it needs is a water trait and a Rift element to be bred. So, Water Rift X any dragon can supposedly produce a Kampos. I was just messing around with the breeding calculator and Kampos keeps popping up as a result in combos where Air Rift is used but no water trait is present in the other parent dragon. That seems like maybe a mistake in the calculator?? Air Rift X Plant Rift gives Kampos as a possible outcome and that can't be right. 🤔
