Cyn Um... I'm really sorry. This is my fault. Way back in page six(?) I posted something in the middle of a wall of text saying that the traits count as elements for breeding. This was based on a post somewhere (Facebook?? I can't find it now in any case) that I'd read that someone had bred something impossible with their traited dragon. This was questioned by the others here and then quickly debunked, so I corrected the post. But I couldn't correct it in the minds of those who had read it...
The truth, for real this time: When determining what type of dragon you get from breeding, only the actual elements of the parents count. The Rust and Quicksilver are both only contributing Metal and Water to what the offspring can be, and that would be the case regardless of what their traits were. It works like in the main park.
The difference is, if the offspring also gets the Rift element, then what trait it hatches with can be the active trait from either parent (the little circle above the elements, causes the appearance effect, changed at the transfiguration tower), or whatever element the Rift is aligned to.
So from that combo you're only ever getting Metal Quicksilver, Metal Rust, Conch and Platinum. If you changed one trait to Lightning, you could get Metal or Lightning Quicksilver, Metal or Lightning Rust, Conch and Platinum. If you want to get Lightning dragons as a result, then you need a Rift Lightning hybrid in the mix, like a Metal Copper or Magnetic. (Assuming you're going for Metal Plasma, that plus one of the Metal Rust/Quicksilver dragons.)
I'm so sorry for confusing you like this. So many wasted breeds, my fault. 😔 My goal has been to try to help with the confusion of the Rift, but for you I've just caused more of it.

I thought I was bringing Lightning and Plant to the breeding. No? My Quicksilver is Metal, Lightning, and Water. My Rust is Metal, Lightning, and Plant. It is a Metal day in my Rift so do I have to use the Transfiguration Tower at this point? Change my Quicksilver to Lightning and or change my Rust to Lightning or Plant? I am not a geneticist... HELP!
Cyn, as you know I dunno nuffin, but you're reading the 'available traits' box, not the dragon attributes (listed under the dragon) box, yes? There's no way rust has plant, it's water and metal, and Your one above has water metal and rift metal. I don't know what the available trait refers to, possibly what traits you can have a dragon wear thru the transfig tower? You could try experimenting, if you have the TT, by selecting lightning? 😉🐨🐨🐨🌿🌿🌿

All care no responsibility Arkynos, you're a gem, we're all learning, even if some are faster pickups in this rifty than others 😆😆😆

The way I see it. The dragons still breed normally like before. BUT Now they can be birthed with snazzy accessories (traits). Like a lightening scarf or a fire hat. You still need the normal elements to breed dragons. But if you want the baby to have a lightening scarf having mom and dad AND the rift hospital all possessing lightening scarfs will increase your chance of the dragon being born with a lightening scarf

Absolutely not your fault! I don't even remember reading that. 🤓 I only stumbled along with breeding in the original park because of the Sandbox and other players. Players talk about opposites, hybrids, golden hybrids, yada, yada and my eyes glaze over. It was only while creating an egg island in my park this week - Here - that I understand which Golden Hybrid matches up with which regular dragon and only because of laying out the pedestal pattern. Is Bramble really the Golden Hybrid of Nightshade? Why doesn't it have purple and gold swirls? That is going to drive me crazy now!
I did get a Kampos and a Plumewing by accident trying to breed for something else. Ghast is the only new Rift that I actually got while breeding for it! I did breed an intentional Bluefire, finally and that was BFS' fault. As long as BFS doesn't go and do anything stupid like introducing limited time Rift dragons I think I am going to breed like this: Plant Day Alignment breed: Plant+Fire, Plant+Earth, Plant+Cold, etc right down the line until I have one each of every regular dragon as a Rift. Extra traits will just be a bonus. 🎁 Keeping track will be a nightmare. 👻

So would it be best if I go back to using the Sandbox and think of the Traits as steroids? 🏋️♀️
It is Metal day in my Rift. I have done 5 breeds using Quicksilver set to Metal and Rust set to Metal. Results = 4 non Rift dragons and a Metal Quicksilver which I obviously already have. I get 4-5 non Rift dragons for every Rift dragon bred. I think my Rift is broken.
Commiserations 😤
I have stopped going for that fifth breed. So far, every time (a few) has given me an unrifty.
Also stopped sending the Airship out. Even with the new costs, it's too much.

both of the two dragon you showed us, your rust and quicksilver, have a metal trait on them, but they have unlocked other traits as well. You can change which traits they have, but these dragons both have just metal and water elements when breeding, with a metal trait. No other elements will be contributed to the breeding mix. Traits change the appearance of the dragons, so if you want a plasma with a metal trait, using one of those (rust or quicksilver, with metal traits) are both good as *one* of the parents, but the other one would have to contain lightning in it, so lightning rift, copper, magnetic, or even others like spark, sonic, ash, etc would be good choices for the second parent. koala!
Look what I finally found #4’ers I can’t breed anything but wasted a ton of E finding a tower. No clue where the other bldg is. I keep breeding dragons w no trait. I’ve followed all combos pple have posted and no luck. Oh well, at least I know I’m layout #4:) thanks for the help Arkynos and chem!
Hi skeeter622 ! Congratulations on finding your tower!!
If it's where you found it, I should gently tell you that I'm pretty sure you're a layout 2 (which is also expensive as heck). If that's the case your cave would be to the far right, but no hurry!
Would someone double check, please?
Wishing you, and all 2's and 4's, cookies with your fav hot drink!

ok, people-with-better-layouts, you may join us If you bring a koala for us
Ooagooma. I went to Imgur. At this time they are doing third party hosting but that can change. Upload there then share copy link and paste here. Avoid evil photobucket at all costs. Put em out of of business. $400/yr my butt.
Thank you. Not sure how to do this but will try.
Hi chemnerd. Spent a lot of time trying to do this with no luck:(( You are actually a friend in the game. Can you possibly look at my rift and help me make heads or tails about clearing miasma so that I can find the buildings. I think I finally have enough E to give it a shot. Thanks either way!!

Yes, bramble drives all of us OCD players crazy! So does Darkling, with the lightning pedestal when it should be a dark.
Following instructions, I succeeded getting Ghast in one shot with Heat and Watch, both having a fire trait. (My game is in its Light phase so it didnt harm the combo)
Ok Arkynos, Magpac and Elf (and any other completionists out there):
Overall Goal:
There are 90 dragons that can have 10 traits each (900 traits); 23 dragons that can only have 1 trait each (23 traits). So 113 dragons with 923 traits!!
I have 50/113 dragons and 78/923 traits!!
What's everyone else's tally?
I should have mentioned that I have 3 Regal, 1 Refined and 2 Reputable habitats. Yes, I am collecting ~every hour and from the Airship every 2
Hi there, My main park has 62 rift dragons w/ 71 traits on 19 habitats (1 regal, 5 refined and 13 reputable). How're you doing?
Elf
Edit: After working on this a lot my numbers won't add up! Traits could be 82 . . . .
I need a disclaimer here: I don't know the exact mechanics or chances here and there could well be other factors, so let's call this a hypothetical model of Rift breeding.
First, the species is determined as in the regular park. Obviously if you get anything other than a normal hybrid, they can't have traits so it ends here.
If we get a normal hybrid from the first roll, we move onto a check for a trait. 4 results. 1) Inherit trait from the first parent. 2) Inherit trait from the second parent. 3) Inherit trait from the Rift Alignment. 4) Inherits nothing, gets no trait or Rift element.
I don't know the relative chances of the 4 outcomes, but I'm going to run with the simplest form possible and just say they're all 25%. It feels about that anecdotally, with no trait feeling more common than the other outcomes because of all the stuff like golden hybrids not having any traits.
If you breed Metal Rift + Light Luminous in Metal Alignment then each Malachite has a 25% chance of successfully getting the Light Trait, as the only source is the Luminous. If you breed Light Palladium + Light Luminous in Metal Alignment then each Malachite has a 50% chance of being Light trait, as it can inherit from both parents. This doubles the chance of a successful result. (And wouldn't have been a possible until they changed it so you just need the elements for an opposite and not a specific single element parent.) If you breed Light Palladium + Light Luminous in Light alignment then each Malachite has a 75% chance of being Light trait, triple the basic rate, as it can come from either parent or the Rift Alignment.
Here's the summary and TL;DR version: If you're aiming for a specific trait on an opposite, try to get both parents to have the right trait, and have the Rift aligned that way too. It really helps.
(If you want a specific trait on a normal hybrid you'll want to do both of those, but also minimise the number of dragons that the breeding combo results in. Rare breeding chances are fairly flat, but hybrid chances change dynamically so adding another non-opposite element for a hybrid roughly halves the chance of success. So for normals it's not worth getting a second parent with the right trait if you're adding elements to get it...)
Thanks for your answer! Don't worry, I know you don't have all the expertise on the rift breedings But as I was having luck in my early breedings, I naïvely hoped that only one parent would be enough to get a particularly trait quickly. I'll take your advice and will try to breed more hybrids to increase my chances on the opposites I want. Plus it'll grow my collection of rift hybrids, so it can't be bad... After all, none of those dragons are limited in time, so as I said, no need to rush! Though here I am, with both my tower and my cave, trying to get those pretty dragons as fast as the little demon in my mind asks...

Oh THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!! I am not alone!!!!🤗🤗🤗
Ditto re "Players talk about opposites, hybrids, golden hybrids, yada, yada and my eyes glaze over.". I can not even trick my brain into waking up and taking notice. I literally check out and start hearing the sound used for adults talking in the Charlie Brown cartoons. 😳😳🤔🤕😥 I try really I do even the forum gives way to much info way to fast. I have to go back to the start of the thread and hope that the point form instructions are there. That way someone has told me exactly what to do because recipes I can follow vague theorems I can not, they break my brain 😥😥
I love Arkynos , N/A , magpac , Mr. Bones (mr. bones), Cyn and anyone else who has worked so hard to explain but I have not mentioned you here. I'm soooooo grateful to u all for helping me to not throw in the towel in frustration
