If I get lucky, this will knock off five of the last 11 dragons I need. Now THAT's progress. But still no quintessence

There are several dragons, including Quintessence, that have not been released in over a year. It was recommended that they show in this Dragon’s Week, but Deca decided to release the Halloween and Noms dragons. Not sure when the missing dragons will be available again. ☹️ Sorry about that.
🎃 All winners of The Spoiler Contest will have the animated ghosts on my mini-profile added to their profile for a month. G’luck! 👻
Got a dragon for the first time rifted during dragon week. Since it's Scout, it counts for two.
Ngl, though... I already have so many dragons to rift that it feels like being cheated out of a dragon week. Tomorrow, a brand new candidate drops. I'll have to prioritize it over rifting
Just bred Keyper! I missed out on it during Garden Noms, so I’m super happy to finally have one 😁
I don't even have an Etch or Razortail in my Rift... which is ironic considering that of the upcoming combos revealed this event, three of the four (including Lovesick) I can breed in the rift.

The only good thing about this release is it's relatively easy to breed. But only a week in the market, with Dragons' Week is already underway, and Mesmerus being Mesmerus...

Keep calm. There are many dragons on the limited release calendar. These dragons were created to celebrate specific events or holidays. Carnival fell off the calendar in 2018. As a result, it was not available for three years. It was desperately added to an event last year. Now, it looks to be restored to the limited calendar so it will regularly be available to players. This is a good thing.
Carnival is not 'unbuyable'. You can purchase it with gems in the Market, like all the other returning limited dragons that are not associated with an event.

I appreciate your first point. If it's been unavailable for so long then fair enough, it needed to be added. I still think they could have put Dragons' Week at a different time if they were planning on adding Carnival, or Carnival later if they hadn't planned to release it originally.
But I am not spending 340 gems on one dragon. Perhaps I should have clarified - I oersonally don't count any dragon available for gems only as 'buyable'. Maybe other people, especially those who are later game, are different, but 340 is waaaaaay too much for me and most if not all free-to-play early-to-mid-game people.
You're right, it was a bit of an overreaction, but really, everything's just been adding to each other. Each individual thing alone isn't too bad. But all of it together is just making me want to play DragonVale less and less. When I started playing again in August last year I was pretty set on completing the Dragonarium, something I'd never considered for myself before but always thought would be cool, but now it's just looking less possible. I can of course just go back to playing casually, but it would be a real shame, and I know that with all the new releases, if I decide not to complete the Dragonarium, I can't go back - it would be too much playing catch up. I'm getting close now, but with the constant new releases it really is the epitome of 'so close yet so far'. I just wish they'd chill out with the limited releases.
But thanks for the clarification anyway. I really hope you didn't think I'm annoyed at you, because I'm not. I meant it when I said that you're awesome. You're the best
Look who’s come to party during Mardi Gras and Brazilian Carnival — Carnival!
Many thanks to MinyaZ for the request! Players everywhere are celebrating you!
Yay, Carnival is back. I'm so pleased that it has been added back into its normal release schedule. Thank you so much adlerist for pushing for Carnival's release. 😊
Carnival's decoration Orlon's Pavilion is also available to buy. And it only costs 1,000 DC - easily affordable by all. Thank you Deca. 😊

Thank you for the kind words — you’re awesome too 🙂 I’m not annoyed with you, and I hope you aren’t with me.
Dragon’s Week was likely planned over a month ago, if not longer, and Carnival was decided earlier this week. Carnival was released for Mardi Gras / Carnival, so the date can’t be postponed. Carnival started today, and Mardi Gras begins on the 21st.
Don’t stress out about the limited dragons that were released for Dragon’s Week, the event, Carnival, or other future limiteds. If you can’t breed them now, you can focus on them later. With over 750 dragons in the game, there’s always going to be a lot to breed at any given time. It will take years for a player to collect all the dragons. The game is designed that way. You’re not supposed to obtain all the content in an event during your first two years. DragonVale is about the long haul.

You're definitely right about it being a long haul game. I guess I just wanted to get ahead, because I know I'm not going to play much for three years when September comes around, since I'll be studying. DragonVale is a huuuuuuge distraction for me if I let it be, so when I actually have things I need to do, it will be better for me not to play at all than to think 'maybe 10 minutes' and end up spending three hours reorganising or whatever.
When I started playing again in August I'd left the game for two years (or one and a half, thereabouts) and there was a crazy amount of dragons added; that number of new dragons will probably be at least double after three years of not playing now, so I really wanted to be able to catch up, even just a tiny bit, since that would effectively be half a decade of catch up otherwise. But I know most players aren't in my position. (For one, I imagine the majority of people are better at not using the game to procrastinate, because I'm VERY bad on that count, hence why I've decided in advance that I won't play while I'm studying.)

I've had much the same issue, but I figured out something that works for me eventually. E.g. "locking" inactive projects in my park. Never buying dragons with EC. Only checking in to do my breeds when it's hectic. Skipping events.
Result: missing 10-30 dragons at all times. Wrong choice? I don't know. I don't hoard dragons, I hoard park building blocks. I didn't move one decoration for half a year before Halloween. Then Halloween was a project and Christmas. Now, I felt the impulse to work on Aura 2.
I miss several building blocks, however. Meaning, it will be a temporary arrangement and locked after this event. Without this locking strategy, I would be lost. Together with only breeding, I spend less than 10 minutes on these days.
A third strategy, when I'm active, is setting collection goals. E.g. only getting 80% of the daily max can be done in half the time I'd need to get to 100%. it's always more than enough because I don't buy dragons.
Normally, it's 10 minutes. It's much longer currently because of all the freezes. Somewhat offset by crazy breeding luck, but still 20 minutes. Egg hatchy doesn't help.
I could play only the weekly tower. However, since very recently DECA refunds tickets upon crash. Tempting

Never buying dragons for EC would just not work out. Lots have abysmal odds in breeding. Besides, the only non-dragon worth spending EC on this event is Omnitats, and I have enough habitats to house all the dragons. The Prismatic Pantheon's usefulness is cancelled out by the edit path trick, the island themes are a bonus if there's spare EC, and decorations show up in Decorators' Week. If you have the right habitats, in most (if not all) events, dragons are the only practical thing to get really.
I stopped checking in to do breeds (and collect etherium) halfway through the Christmas event and haven't started up again. Now I just log in when I get up, maybe once between then and the daily reset, at the reset, and then in the evening. I guess I could be more efficient with logging in now that Dragons' Weeks are happening, but that's so much extra time working out what to breed just to get one or maybe two dragons.
My only goal is red fire. I don't care for blue or (the effectively impossible) purple, and while I might decorate with spare islands I have, I wouldn't put loads of time and effort into it, so there isn't really anything to 'lock'.
Hmm... Might stop on it's own if you really enforce a time limit through a timer.
I'm not very practical in games. I focus on what I want to build and this is that.
However, even through my meager logins, I always score 2 rifted dragons. When catching up on dragons consistently, 4-5 since the Vale can breed.
Time optimized playing means you can't have everything, so if you spend it all on dragons... I guess you can still get half your stuff at 10min/day. Depending on the event (airships are generous), that's EC for 1-2 dragons. With that strategy, I think I would miss about one dragon?
That's no red fire. The alternative is being even further away from red fire, though. I get a lot of twins from eggs of mystery. Perfection is the enemy of the good and all that

I should add: I consider unrifted dragons decoration only. Their functionality is too low. Starters aside, half the weeklies can be rifted if you have the parents.
I get the odd egg from Coop pairings. But, it will of course be unrifted yet again. No currency spend means missing only weekly and 2 starters on average for me. With currency = one dragon

No, I did some planning and worked out enough habitats to house every single dragon that's currently in the game, and I update the plan whenever new dragons are released. This is the post for all dragons that have at least one non-epic element: https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonvale/comments/yppavq/my_method_for_housing_all_dragons_that_have_at/ (Yes, I realise it's better to house epic dragons in epic habitats because of high DC caps, but I don't need a lot of DC and this method was a LOT easier than having all element habitats in the mix from the start.) Rift-exclusives stay in the Rift, dragons with only one (epic) element stay in their respective habitat, and other than that there are 25 dragons that have two epic elements and no non-epic elements. At the moment, they're planned to go in the hibernation cave, but if I manage to get three large Omnitats they'll be going in there instead (once I've got Meridiem habitats to move my sun/moon element dragons into). I could use the Megatat, but I've already pretty much planned to use that for my remaining fifteen duplicates.
I guess one or two dragons is better than nothing over the three year break, but as I say I know that 'getting enough EC for one or two dragons' would, for me, very easily become 'ahhh I'll just play a couple minutes more to get EC for a third dragon, I only need to get a little bit each day' which would become 'Well I nearly have enough for a fourth now, I may as well log in once more every day' and would end up becoming me playing pretty much as much as I do currently. That's why I stopped playing two-and-a-bit years ago - the crashing issues meant I could never log on, and I decided not to get it fixed, because I knew it would distract me from revision. My perfectionism (and so fear of doing badly in essays etc.) mixed with my general desire to procrastinate anything work-related (even if I enjoy it a lot, which I obviously do since I chose to study the course I'll be studying) just wouldn't allow me to play.
I see. Maybe further studies will wear down some of that perfectionism. Maybe they will make it worse, hah.
I can stand seminars, but I'd run around naked for a year before I could put up with weekly essays again. Shave my hair, maybe. koala on your journey through the nine hells.
