⛄️ WELCOME TO THE 12 DAYS OF WINTER SCAVENGER HUNT ☃️
An important global moment arrives at 10.27 p.m. EST on Thursday, 21 December 2023 when the sun shines above the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere. Winter solstice north of the equator signals the official beginning of a new season, and a new contest emerges… 12 DAYS OF WINTER SCAVENGER HUNT!
The Hunt will take you through all the winter festivities and concludes on January 2nd. Every day will have a new winter dragon or DragonVale object hidden among the pages on the Forum. Find as many DV items as you can and the top five players will be immortalised in the Scavenger Hunt Hall of Fame on the first page of this thread. Winners will also receive celebratory confetti on their mini profile for a month (see LadyJ’s and Worms’ mini profiles) and the title 'The Scavenger Hunt Winner'.
START AND END DATES
Starts: December 21st (winter solstice)
Ends: January 2nd at 7.00 pm MST (UTC-7), 12 hours after the DragonVale daily reset
HOW TO PLAY
Winter dragons and DV objects are randomly dispersed all over the Forum. Just read the Forum as usual, or click around and scroll away to find the dragons.
The schedule for which dragons are hiding on the Forum will follow the 12 Days of Winter song:

NEW ADDITIONS TO THE HUNT
To keep in line with the 12 Days of Winter theme and to put more holiday spice into the hunt, approximately 12 hours after the DV reset, the dragons you can find will slightly change.
On Day 1, baby Fire in a Dragonsai tree will be the dragon to locate. This will remain the same all day.
On Day 2, Mistletoe will be the featured dragon. However, approximately 12 hours later, Mistletoe and baby Fire in a Dragonsai tree will both be randomly hiding on the Forum.
On Day 3, Gift is the dragon, and 12 hours into the day, Gift, Mistletoe, and baby Fire in a Dragonsai tree can be found.
By Day 12, when Yule is featured, 12 hours later, any of the 12 dragons (and mystery egg) will be available — just like the 12 Days of Winter song.
The dragons for the second portion of the day will be randomly selected and randomly placed on a random page of the Forum. It may be a little more challenging because you won’t know what you’re looking for — but since dragons do not stand still, most of the images are animated, so they will jump out (the mystery egg is the only item not animated; baby Fire’s Dragonsai tree has animated gem twinkles, but they’re difficult to see in its minimised hunt size). And of course, to further help with the hunt, we have the invaluable prize Detector (see below for more details).
MORE WAYS TO COLLECT MORE DRAGONS
There are additional ways to collect dragons and add to your score. Each dragon you find increases your total by one, but on DragonVale Double Days, Triples Days, and New Year’s Day, each dragon will randomly increase your total by 1-3!
• On regular days, every dragon you find will add one dragon (+1 dragon) to your total
• On DragonVale Double Days (one weekday and on the weekends), each dragon will randomly add 1-2 dragons to your total
• On DragonVale Triple Day, each dragon will randomly add 1-3 dragons
• And on New Year’s Day, each dragon will randomly add 1-3 dragons to your total
READY TO HUNT?
Whenever you open a page, there may or may not be a dragon hiding. You can find a dragon on the Home page, open a board or thread, then return to the Home page, and a dragon may be there again. There is only one dragon per page, so no need to keep looking; the Detector will deactivate (more on the Detector below). Almost any page can have a dragon, including a posting page or reply page on a thread or message.
When you find a dragon, click or tap it. It will be added to your holiday stocking, and this pop-up will show.
On your mini profile, there is a holiday stocking to store the DV items you found. The mini profile will keep track of how much you’ve collected. Currently, it’s displaying a gem because baby Fire in a Dragonsai tree is the only object that’s hiding. Every day, the mini profile item will change to highlight the dragon that’s on the Forum. If you click on the holiday stocking, a message will show confirming your dragon total.
DRAGON DETECTOR
After you find five dragons, you will unlock the prize Detector. Since the Forum has thousands of pages, and many are very long, it would be extremely tiresome to scroll through page after page looking for dragons with little to no reward. The Detector will be immensely beneficial, save you time, and help you find more dragons.
In the lower right-hand corner of your screen, there is a toolbar. If it’s hidden, click on the small arrow to expand it (on a tablet or phone, you may need to tap several times before your device responds). When you’ve unlocked the Detector, an animated icon will appear on the toolbar.
The Detector has two images: activated and deactivated. The activated image is an animated holiday present/tree/snowman. If the Detector is activated, that means there is a dragon on the page. The deactivated image is an animated present that won't open. If the Detector is deactivated, that means there’s no dragon on the page.
If you click on the Detector icon in the toolbar, it will open the animated images so you can see them better.

TIP: Once you collect five dragons, click on the Scavenger Hunt leaderboard (more info on the leaderboard below) so it syncs your total, and then the Detector icon will show in the toolbar.
The Detector will save you from spending your days scrolling through lengthy pages. There’s no time for that — winter is already here!
HOW MANY DRAGONS WILL FIT IN A HOLIDAY STOCKING?
There will be a random number between 1-15 dragons for you to find with each visit to the Forum. So if the Detector hasn’t alerted you in a while, your stocking may be full, and you’ll need to revisit.
LEADERBOARD
On the navigation bar, click on the Scavenger Hunt button and you’ll see how many dragons your fellow Valers have collected.
The leaderboard can fall out of sync with the mini profile after several hours. It will sometimes show an incorrect, lower amount. If you collected a small amount of dragons, after several hours of inactivity, you may no longer be on the leaderboard. In addition, sometimes a 'null' value will show instead of the collection count.
LEADERBOARD GLITCHES
If there’s a discrepancy between the count on your mini profile and the leaderboard, or if you’re no longer on the leaderboard, or if the leaderboard shows 'null' instead of your amount, finding a couple more dragons will resolve the issue and sync the leaderboard with your mini profile. Please be aware, the leaderboard amount could decrease again, after several hours of inactivity. However, your mini profile will always keep an accurate track of the number of dragons you’ve found. Therefore, at the end of the Scavenger Hunt, the totals from the mini profile will be used to determine the winners.
To prevent your mini profile and the leaderboard from falling out of sync, please follow the instructions below.
IMPORTANT
To ensure your dragon count is not disrupted
1. Do not use the back button after you find a dragon or after opening the leaderboard. Try to use the Forum’s buttons and links. (It’s fine to use the back button to read and navigate the Forum, just refrain when you’re doing scavenger activities.)
2. Do not open another tab when there's a collectable dragon on the first tab, unless you’ve already collected the dragon.
3. Do not let a dragon sit on the screen (it’ll get bored!). Gather it as soon as you spot it, or ignore it, but do not scroll back or use the back button to collect it later.
Any of the above or similar actions result in stale data and can corrupt your dragon count and other members’ dragon counts on the leaderboard.
HOW TO WIN
1. Find as many dragons as you can during the 12 Days of Winter Scavenger Hunt. The five members with the highest collection count will be added to the Scavenger Hunt Hall of Fame and the confetti background will be added to their mini profile for a month with the title 'Scavenger Hunt Winner'. If you prefer to not have the background and/or title, just let me know. Note: if you’ve already won an animated background from a different contest, the confetti background will be displayed after the first one expires.

As always, you must be viewing the Forum in its Desktop version to participate in the hunt. If you’re on a mobile device, just click Desktop in the lower right corner of the page. You’ll also need to be a member (the leaderboard can’t keep track of your dragons as a guest). Membership is free, only requires an email, and takes mere seconds — so jump into the dragon hunt with us; we’d love to have you onboard.
If you don’t want to play, you can ignore the dragons. However, if that proves to be difficult or if the dragons are too distractingly adorable and you do not want to see any Scavenger Hunt content, please message me.

The leaderboard shows Arceus. It shows your display name, not your username that’s used for tagging.
