I’ve mentioned another timer or a pop-up notification again to Deca today. A pop-up notification would be much easier to implement. Backflip used to do this in the early years to inform players it’s the last day to collect event currency. Deca did this the last time the Runic Breeding Caves were in an event to tell players they had 24 hours to claim their eggs. Would a pop-up notification work for you?
It’s not as elaborate as a timer, but I think it’d be effective and the most probable solution (although there’s no guarantee it’ll happen).
In the meantime, if you don’t visit the Forum daily, then setting a reminder on your device to claim the event calendar prizes will likely be the best way forward.
Some sort of visual indicator that can't be cleared out weeks in advance (like the event timer under the Social panel) is really all I'm suggesting, so yes a pop-up would do just fine. I was just pondering options that were more thematic/integrated is all. :-) (I usually try to pick out which egg/dragon I want within a day or two of the last prize opening, but the last week or so here's been crazy and there was at least one day where my daily playing consisted of one round of the event games and a mass currency collection and that was it.)
Veyska an in game timer or pop-up would be the perfect solution, but until that arrives, there are a couple of in-game hints that I use to know when the event is ending.
For several events now the last limited dragon has been available for 10 days and it always has a timer in the prize tier. When that timer runs out, you can no longer earn event currency and the event island will disappear. If there are runic caves during an event, this is also when they will disappear.
At least the last two events have ended with 3 days of double event currency. The timer for this is in the Social Menu, but events have ended with a double weekend (not always 3 days) for some time now.
I do like your idea of fireworks around the event island on the last day - it would be very eye-catching and obvious.

I always set an appointment or event on my phone’s calendar app so I get a push notification when there’s 12 hours left to earn currency and pick the egg I want before the island disappears. I can get really busy so it’s not uncommon for me to forget since the event has two end dates.
It would be nice to have a notification in the game to remind us. Another timer might be confusing but a notification would work really well.

Deca used Backflip’s art for the 10th Anniversary announcement, so they’ve definitely reviewed Backflip’s work and reused it. But the event loading screen images are always wildly original and creative.
I was thinking the same as you. Deca may be paying homage to previous Om of Noms. It’s a continuation of the Om of Noms story and seamlessly connects the Backflip era with the Deca era.
