Last year, Deca Games requested feedback for their new event dragons. Since I didn’t know what members thought about the dragons, I asked Deca if I could query our players. They said yes, and the Rate a Dragon threads were born. From the players’ feedback, I noticed members were very intrigued and had lots of questions about the meaning behind a dragon or the etymology of its name. So recently, I asked RecallDoro if they’d be willing to hold a contest and let players guess the inspiration behind the dragons that piqued their curiosity — and the wonderful DV Team agreed!
Today, Deca Games and the DragonVale Community Forum present, THE ORIGIN CONTEST! Players can win gems by guessing the meaning behind a dragon, inventing an original story for the name, or posting anything they fancy that explains the dragon’s origin or how the dragon got its name.
Stay tuned for more details... The Origin Contest will launch on Friday, 20 May at 4.00 PM CEST / 8.00 AM MDT / DV’s daily reset.

Deca Games and the DragonVale Community Forum are pleased to introduce
THE ORIGIN CONTEST
Have you ever wondered what a dragon’s name meant? Perhaps you tried to guess the etymology, references, or inspiration behind a dragon. Now you can win gems for your guesses and have some of those dragon questions answered!
HOW TO PLAY
Simply submit your best guess for the origin of the featured dragon.
Featured Dragon: Smigi
What does the name Smigi mean? Post your answer on this thread
Prizes: 50 gems to each winner!
Deadline: Sunday, May 29th at 11.59 PM (Berlin time)
FOUR WAYS TO WIN
1. First correct response
2. The most original post that explains the origin of Smigi’s name (it can be a creative story describing the meaning of the name, a logical explanation, a funny origin tale, a drawing or image, a haiku, or anything else you can imagine — the origin does not need to be correct)
3. Post with the most 'likes'
4. A random post will be selected through a raffle
THE ORIGIN CONTEST RULES
1. Only one submission per person.
2. Please post you answer on this thread. If you’re new to the Forum, here are instructions on how to post. And here are directions if you’d like to post an image. (Please message me or any staff member if you have difficulty posting or posting images. If you’re a guest, you won’t be able to message, so post your question on this thread)
3. Please do not edit or delete your post. Posts that are edited will be void and users that delete posts and submit a new post will not be eligible to win.
4. You do not need to be a Forum member to enter the contest. Guests can post on the Forum, but we would love to have you aboard!
5. The winners will be posted on this thread on June 3rd.
6. All winners will need to message adlerist with their Park ID, so Deca can deliver their gems. If a winner is not a Forum member, they will not have access to messages, so they can either (1) post their guest name and Park ID on the contest thread, or (2) join the Forum and send a message. The IP address / location of the winning post will be used to ensure it’s the same poster.
7. Contestants can only win one prize per person.
8. If no-one guesses the origin of the featured dragon, Deca may award the prize to another original post.
Remember: The post with the most 'likes' will win, so DV players are selecting one of the winners. Be sure to visit the contest thread frequently and like your favourite entries, so they’ll take home the prize! Since 'likes' are attributed to member accounts, guests cannot like posts. In addition, the mobile version of the site does not support many features, including likes. If you’re on a mobile device, tap Desktop in the lower right corner, then you’ll have full access to the Forum’s features.
If you have any questions, you can post them on this thread or message an administrator or moderator. Here’s a list of the staff members, just click the name to open the profile and select the Send Message button:
While you’re here, with Smigi on your mind, why not rate Smigi and provide Deca with your valuable feedback! Along with Smigi, you can rate Ponkipong, Stage, and Jumpiplop. Next week, the Rate a Dragon threads for Scryer and Morphimagus will be released.

Smigi, quite different from the original designs name, Tissu, which I found meant fabric in French. I did some digging and found a Polish surname that included Smigi. It seems to fit the name and theming of the dragon 😀
The Smigi Dragon was named to represent its acrobatic and outgoing personality.
Though "Smigi" doesn't seem to be an actual word, it has been used as a name before (though it is probably rare). Those who are named Smigi are said to usually have the following characteristics:
-They are always optimistic, positive and cheerful, and always seem to bounce with personality. The Smigi Dragon certainly reflects that with its joyful nature, and (quite literally) bounces around its habitat.
-They are very inspiring, and typically do best in the fields of theater, acting, comedy, or music. Obviously, the Smigi Dragon definitely enjoys being in the circus, which reflects a profession under these types of fields.
-They are perfectionists. You can clearly tell that Smigi Dragons have spent a long, long time to perfect their circus acts-making sure every last thing is under their control.
-They are creative. This reflects how the Smigi Dragon was fan-designed with immense creativity, rather than created purely by DECA Games.
-They are charming. When Discord user beejeans designed the Smigi Dragon, he/she definitely created it with beauty and grace in their mind.
Okay, okay, I know that this was probably longer than it needed to be, but that's my educated guess on why the Smigi Dragon is called the Smigi Dragon.

There’s already two amazing guesses with excellent explanations! My Smigi story is a little different.
Smig is from the Scottish Galelic word smiogaid, which means chin.
One day the Tissu dragon was swinging all over the place like a tissue, and a strong gust of wind caught him and he got tangled up in the high wire of the telephone wires.
He dangled there for days until a Whirlwind dragon got upset nearby and its wind twisted the dragon free. He was very, very lucky because he could have been tangled even more. In fact, his luck was so extreme, the wizards said he escaped disaster by “the hair of his chinny-chin-chin.” And that is why this Scottish Galelic dragon is called Smigi.

Smigi - from Smiles and Giggles, because that's what these dragons love. They enjoy jokes and pratfalls, and even when they try to mimic their new friends and fail, it's all in good fun. Wizards are such absurd creatures, how could they no love them? And what better way to show off their affection than with drawing laughs and smiles from a crowd. Smigis enjoy life, and the want you to enjoy it too!

There are a couple of things I think Smigi comes from. One being smidge, which means a bit or little, as Smigi dragons come off as a bit weird. The design also gives me Lewis Carrol vibes so the weird nature may come for that as well.

I see what you mean about Lewis Carroll! That’s a great observation!!

I think the secret origin of Smigi isn't in the name of the dragon. I think the origins lie in its story, specifically where it says it was discovered by the Wizard and Witch duo, Jules and Lillian. Both of those names have meaning within the history of the circus.
Notice that she still performed that night, even though she came out on crutches.
I think this is why Smigi can't walk on its back legs. It still flys and performs, but if it tries to stand and walk, it wobbles, stumbles and falls. My theory is that the origin of Smigi was inspired by Lillian Leitzel and the accident she had.
Sorry, I know this doesn't have much to do with the dragon's actual name. But I think it still ties into the origin, so hopefully it'll do.
We share our physical lives with those in spirit. For life, like love, never dies. Love knows no limits, not even death.

Thank you for supplying the links DragonMoonX It was a very interesting read. It is surprising how educational a Dragon game can be. And I love your reasoning for why Smigi doesn't walk - makes perfect sense. 😊
Simorgh is a fabulous bird of Persian mythology. According to legends it is said that he is immortal and has a nest in the tree of knowledge. It would be so old that it would have already seen three times the destruction of the world. This age could explain the size of the smigi dragon. Simorgh just like the smigi dragon is an animal possedant a dog front bust, lion’s claws and is provided with a pair of wings, and a tail rising vertically and vegetating allowing it to fly and perform acrobatics. They say his feathers were made of copper, and although it was initially described as a bird dog, it was then known either with a man’s head or with a dog’s head which would explain the mask that the smigi dragon wears. It is naturally good and contact with its wings can cure any illness or injury.

Brilliant!! This is a terrific interpretation of Smigi!

The Circus documentary that I linked in this post on The Dragon Bandwagon thread covered Leitzel and her husband Codona. In the 1920s and 1930s, they were not only the most famous acrobats, they were the most famous people. Leitzel was a megastar, eclipsing movie celebrities. She was also a somewhat tragic figure, but her end was not nearly as tragic (or dramatic) as Codona‘s.

i think smigi is short for smúgan. smúgan is old english word & means creep along, move gradually. smigi walks on its hands & creeps & moves gradually.
ty to my cousin who helped w english in this post since mine is not good.
Hello! Here is my made-up creative guess for Smigi!
This dragon is a top notch performer who does it all. He flips, walks on his hands, sings, and dances. As a result, he is known as “The Sammy Davis Jr. of the Vale” and like Sammy, he performs from gig to gig. His famous performances are called a “Sammy Gig.” Eventually this was shortened to Smigi.

OMG! Sammy Davis Jr. is huge over here! Any time Sammy can be worked in you know it’s amazing. This is an incredibly creative guess!

My guess is similar to bricetwice’s but I think the word and country origin is different. Smyga is Swedish for “to sneak, to move silently to steal".
Maybe the Smigi dragon is a trickster. They perform to distract you then pick your pocket, almost like a magician’s magic trick. But they’re not thieves, dragons don’t need your money. Smigis are just really curious to know what you have in your pockets and purses.
Smigi is short for “small iguana.” The iguanas in the Vale are much larger than the ones on Earth. Smigis are related to the iguana. You can see the similarity in the long striped tail that they whip around.
I never realised the etymology of Smigi was hidden in Poland, Scotland, Persia, England, Sweden, Carroll, Davis, the circus, smiles, and iguanas. But it totally makes sense!

I agree! Smigi is a very complicated dragon, but when you add all of these elements up, it equals Smigi!
