The always and forever imaginative Hawk created the Jackal Dragon for Deca Games’ Desert Community Design Contest. Jackal won the contest, received the most upvotes, and stole everyone’s hearts with his fennec inspiration and Egyptian magic. Several months later, Deca brought Jackal to life in the Vale and named him Nubis.

1. Animation 2 The animation makes the wings look very awkward, and makes the odd yellow-ish thing behind it seem out of place. The energetic movements seem quite out of place for this dragon. I do like the flying a bit though, and the baby falling over is cute. Given there is a part of its animation where the dragon shoots out light rays, the design itself didn't need to be as overly bright as it is.
2. Size (if you don’t own Nubis, please check a friend’s park) 4 Slightly too big but I've come to expect that.
3. Price (11,500 Spice) 1 Unbreedables, especially ones with low Co-Op odds, should not be this expensive. Since the other dragons this event were all far too expensive, Nubis and Alayzem really shouldn't have been much more than 9k EC.
4. How well does Nubis fit the theme of the event 4 Although design-wise I think the original was more obvious. It would be 5 for a description relation if it hadn't been the fact that they lessened the design's relation by all the changes they made.
5. Design details 1.5 I liked the simplicity of the "regal-ness" of the original design. I can't put my finger on what exactly it is - possibly it's the fact it looks like they attempted to make it look 3D (why?) and it hasn't really worked, or maybe it's the addition of the yellow-ish object that isn't attached to the actual dragon, or perhaps it's the fact that parts of it are too bright (yes, I get that that's part of the dragon's lore, but it just doesn't work well in my opinion) and don't contrast well with the darker parts - but DECA's design feels unnecessarily over-complicated. I also tend to like blue colour schemes, but I'm not sure that shade of blue works with this dragon - the lighter blue used in the original design didn't stand out as much, and gave it more of a majestic feel. It's striking for sure, and perhaps that's what they were going for, but I definitely prefer the original, by quite a way. And as another comment says, this design departs so much from the original that initially I didn't even think it was Jackal. Ultimately I think it's kind of a shame since if no one knew Nubis was Jackal I think I personally would be able to appreciate it more, and I reckon most others would too, even though I myself still wouldn't like it a lot (compared to others from this event, all of which I liked) because of the colour scheme and the awkward stance. But we do know what it could have been, and it's very different to what we could have hoped for.
6. How would you rate Nubis’s breeding combo (SUN + earth + air) 4 It makes sense and is a kind combo. Misfortune + Pharaoh would have worked too, but both of those dragons were already used in other combos. Sun could have been replace with light element to avoid many, many long fail times, which would be very useful in this event where there are multiple limited any-four-elements dragons available. Nubis could have still been Sun element; there isn't anything stopping DECA using elemental combos for epics.
7. How much do you like Nubis (1 = I hate it, 5 = I love it!) 2 I mostly like it because of what it was based on. It would have been nice if they'd stuck to the original, though I do appreciate that the combo was changed to something easier (even though the original still made sense).
Comments: I think it would be good if Co-Op odds, especially for unbreedables, weren't always at the extremes of 10% or 1%/1.5%. There haven't been any new event dragons at all with cloning odds other than that for over a year. It would be nice to see some 3-5% ones instead of the really low chances, for example. I do like the name and it's obvious where it came from, but I feel like since DECA changed it from "Jackal" they should have related Nubis more to Anubis, i.e. make the dragon associated with death or something. Maybe they thought that would be too dark, but in that case Jackal as a name could have worked better (although in fairness it doesn't fit the in-game design since it doesn't look like a jackal). I'd be interested to know the thought process behind the egg; it's very unique.

Price: 3/5 For a starting new release, and a fan-inspired dragon, it is somewhat expensive. Besides, its poor co-op rate also makes it so most have to buy it anyway.
Theme: 5/5 It was designed with theme in mind.
Design: 4/5 Overall, most details between hawk's design and Nubis are retained, which I do like, although I would like to see it more 2-dimensional like the original design.
Combo: 5/5 It's easy to breed and get the parents. Satisfaction.
Preference: 4/5 Overall, DECA did well with remaking hawk's design. However, I prefer hawk's original design over the DECA one, as the backflip-esque style fits the game better and looks more sleek.
The Original One is in all things. The Original One is nowhere at all. From all creations, over all creations, does Arceus watch over all.

Comments / feedback for Deca : Baby Nubis is cute when he falls over. I like the ‘sunburst’ animation. The blue and gold wings are very striking. Nubis is a great size and an excellent fit to the theme. The yellow flame behind Nubis doesn’t look attached to the adult dragon. It looks to be attached to the baby dragon. It could have been omitted without negatively affecting the design of the dragons. Although the combo looks to be quite straightforward, it is another combo that will give many long fails when Nubis is next available.
Congratulations again to hawk for creating the fantastic Jackal dragon and having it included in the game.
1. 3/5 The animation is a bit lacking. Sometimes less is more but I think Nubis deserves more. 2. 4/5 Surprised & for once slightly disappointed that it’s not bigger. 3. 3/5 Shouldn’t be more than 10k for a starter dragon. 4. 5/5 Obviously a perfect fit. 5. 4/5 Absolutely love the colouring, the gold in particular is glorious. Prefer the legs on the original but like the added colour on Deca’s design. Shout out for the baby’s blue nose, very cute. Really like the ‘sunburst’ (thank you MinyaZ), quite stunning. 6. 4/5 The breeding combo makes perfect sense but I really struggled to breed it & got soooo many long fails so a point off. 7. 4/5 I feel this should’ve/could’ve been a 5 but something’s just off & it looks a bit awkward.

Please know it means the world to me that my fellow players liked my Jackal design. Comments: I like all the animations except the bouncing one. Is he being... playful? It isn't obvious. Nubis' hind lower leg joints going backwards in flight feels unnatural and disturbing. Please stop doing this. Also, he doesn't breathe fire? Nubis looks great beside Lightmare and he's a great size for the Sun habitats, but placed next to other Egyptian dragons, he looks ridiculously tiny. The price is decent for an epic dragon and one that has ridiculous co-op odds. The combo is also reasonable, if uninspired.
Details: Unfortunately, because Nubis was inspired by winning contest art, I think players had some expectations. Of course, Deca can do as they please, but Nubis and Jackal are very different and I can't help but wonder why Deca changed the design so much. To me the addition of the weird horn adornments ruined the Anubis look. His horns should be nude. The golden thing floating behind is interesting and divine looking, but makes no sense and also takes away from the horns. His little rounded tush and defined, 3D thigh give Nubis an odd bodybuilder look when paired with the new, stockier front. To me, the 3D shading style looks like it's from another game. It definitely doesn't fit with the classic DV style of Tutan and Pharaoh, who I feel it ought to compliment. I do think the ankh around his neck was a brilliant addition though. The floating wings are very cool (my favourite part), the colour is stunning, and the tail is gorgeous! I also love that Deca tied in details from Jackal's story. The quest name is spot on. Baby Nubis is super cute. I adore the tiny flaps his wings make. Baby falling is ADORABLE, and his blue muzzle is very boopable.
Overall, I think Deca went overboard with this redesign given players seemed to like the original Jackal art and Deca has proven they can and will do fairly direct translations. Having said that, Nubis has his own charm, and without preconceptions, he's an eye-catching addition to the Sun dragons.

5. Design details: 4, I actually prefer the original design. It looks more like a jackal which to me is very elegant. Deca’s redesign’s color is beautiful, but it just looks a bit less like a jackal/Anubis to me.

Comments / feedback for Deca: thank you to Deca for adapting another winner’s dragon. However, I really prefer the original design, with its more elongated body. Nonetheless, I think the colors are beautiful, and the baby is super cute. The sunburst effect is nice too. Btw, it is a bit hard to social clone, with only a 1.5% odds, and some long fails.
