Backtracking: if you get your second dragon on Thursday, or are missing 250 SD or less before doubles reset, you can still get the Weather Station without expense, without gems or even without clearing obstacles. (Caveat: you may have to keep unsocial hours).

I think I messed up that calculation, though. I got stuck on the "2250" for the other dragon. The Weather Station being 2520, the 250 SD previously mentioned cancel out.
Granted all your gifts get reciprocated, the double-days are worth 2500. Of course, with luck you can get more.
And the news is, IF I max out as I hope, I'll have around 50+ SD surplus. (Talk about close calls!)

They have never let us keep a full sized event island.
It's possible they could give us a smaller version of it, like they did with the Lost Island...
I think the Lost Island is the same size it was during the event. But I am not a 100% sure.

Hmm... I thought the event island was larger, but maybe I am remembering wrong and it's just the vernal glass that was larger than the reward version we got..

Okay. Looking at my parks. Vonfirmie is going to easily get my desire for that park (the dragons) Plus if events continue at this rate I may end up abandoning that park. So, if you are a friend of vonfirmie, PLEASE find someone more needy to send your gifts to. There's time to get set up before hoped-for doubles start now too!

I have finished collect SD for today, except for the spending of gems. I still need 1896 to acquire the Weather Station.
Some quickie math.
1896/5 (if we don't get any double days) = 379 SD / day on average. There is no way I get that many, so I may as well not spend any gems.
1896/9 (if we get a typical double-day weekend) = 210 DS / day on average. I make than this already, so I may as well not spend any gems.
So, regardless of whether we get a double-day weekend, I don't need to spend gems to complete the event. The only difference is whether I get the Weather Station or not.
Could someone with more caffeine in their system look over my numbers and confirm to me that I'm mathing properly.

Looks good Only thing is that we (usually) only get 3 and a half days of doubles so that you have to compensate the missing 25 from the colosseum, so 213 DS / day needed.

I drink tea. Which has more caffeine, tea or coffee? Guess it depends on your palate.
I just got my second Midnight this morning, and I think I might just squeak by and get the Weather Station! Ihave finished everything for today except the Colosseum and I need 2386 SD to get the weather station. Which comes out to just over 265 SD per day, assuming doubles starts Friday morning. I normally collect about 245 each day, and I have some obstacles and upgrades I've been saving for the doubles weekend. The only thing I'm concerned about is most of my gem friends do not seem to wait until doubles start to send gifts, so on Friday my gifts might be singles. Hopefully the obstacles and gems will make up for this!

It's really slow going without doubles. And it's a long way to the Weather Station. But I think it's almost certain that this last weekend will be a double one. I mustn't forget not to send my gifts tomorrow night. This time will be close for a lot of people so I want to help as much as possible. And Friday will be a holiday for me so I will be dying to log in the game and collect my star dust, but I have to refrain myself otherwise I risk not getting enough. This event is being a little harder than the previous ones. Getting only five for gift is not fair at all. At least we could be getting more pockets of star dust now that the star is so much closer...

I really want the Weather Station. We will probably be getting more weather options in the future, as with the Twilight Tower. And I can't imagine not having the tower. I would be very frustrated by now if I didn't have it and couldn't change my park to the various settings of day, nighttime, several backgrounds... And the station looks equally cool.

Yes, but it may not be doubles until 9.5hrs after the next (not this coming) reset. That's what happened last time. Reset for me is 4pm Brisbane time, doubles tends to start at 1:30am.
I'm happy! I just hatched my first Midnight! He's a handsome dragon. I'll keep trying. Who knows, maybe Midnight #2! Many thanks to my gem-buddies! Couldn't have done it without them!
