DragonVale has many different collections of dragons. Some of these collections have special breeding and cloning rules, and exceptions to the rules. It’s difficult to remember all of them and a daunting task for new players. Hopefully, this list of rules and exceptions will be a handy source to answer your questions.

Chrysalis dragons are bred using other Chrysalis dragons in the collection.
Exceptions
• Pearlescent requires a light traited Prism dragon (and a dark traited Starwing dragon)
Chrysalis Breeding Diagram
You will need at least 5 Chrysalis dragons to breed all 17 dragons in the Chrysalis collection. From the outer circle, acquire 3 of the 5 base dragons. Be sure all 3 dragons are not next to each other (e.g., Duskwing, Chrysalis, Marbletail = 👍. Duskwing, Chrysalis, Swallowtail = 👎). In addition, you will need Starwing with a dark trait and Prism with a light trait.

The Rift
To breeding the Chrysalis collection in the Rift, you will need to acquire traited versions of the required Chrysalis dragons from the Chrysalis Egg of Mystery. These special limited mystery eggs are typically available in the Rift Market when Chrysalis dragons are involved in an event.

Epic dragons have an epic element on their profile card, but also hold primary elements which they contribute when you breed with them. Since the elements are not visible on the dragon’s card, they’re called 'hidden elements'.
If you want to know the hidden elements associated with an epic dragon, you can look up the dragon on the DV Compendium.

Evolution dragons can only be bred if both parents are the target dragon. You cannot single-parent clone an evolution dragon.
Example
• Lokilure + Lokilure = may result in Lokilure • Lokilure + any other dragon = never Lokilure
For more on how to evolve dragons, see the Evolution Dragons thread.

Galaxy dragons can only be bred and cloned at the Cooperative Breeding Cave; however, there are some exceptions (see below). To acquire a Galaxy dragon, at the Cooperative, select a friend’s or Nogard’s Galaxy dragon to breed / clone with your dragon. You can use the DV sandbox to find the best dragons to clone.
• The Great Nogard is a bot account, which is automatically added to your Friends list when you start a new park.
• TIP: if you’re using Nogard’s dragons to clone at the Cooperative, his Galaxy dragon typically changes to a new dragon during the last week of the month.
• You can breed with Galaxy dragons in the Vale or Rift; however, a Galaxy dragon will never be an offspring (with the exception of Lunis and Solis).
Exceptions
• Solarflare is the first hybrid Galaxy dragon. It has both the Galaxy and Sun elements on its profile card and requires a dragon from the Sun collection to breed it. Solarflare is gifted to parks that reach level 100 (close your game, then reopen, and it will be in your Gifts under the Social menu).
• Lunis and Solis can be bred outside the Coopertive Breeding Cave, at the Enchanted and Epic breeding locations and the Rift. They currently cannot be bred at the Runic Breeding Caves, so they’re usually unavailable when the RBCs are in an event. (See the Runic Breeding Caves thread for more information and updates on the Lunis / Solis bug.)
• Even though Lunis and Solis be bred in all locations, they can only be cloned at the Cooperative. You can breed Lunis + Moon and receive Lunis, because Lunis’ Galaxy element fulfils its own breeding requirement (Lunis’ breeding hint is Galaxy + any moon dragon). But Lunis is not being cloned and will not receiving the cloning percentage.
• Rigel can be only be bred in the Rift. It is a Rift exclusive. It’s breeding rules require the player to own all the Galaxy dragons (including Lunis and Solis). You can have a mishmash of traited and untraited Galaxy dragons to meet this requirement. The variation of the dragon (regular, twin, traited twin) does not matter; you just need one of each Galaxy dragon in your park.
The Rift
Since there is no Cooperative Breeding Cave in the Rift, you cannot breed Galaxy dragons (with the exception of Lunis, Solis, and Rigel — see above). To acquire the Galaxy collection in the Rift, you will need to purchase the dragons from the Galaxy Egg of Mystery. These special limited mystery eggs are typically available in the Rift Market when Galaxy dragons are involved in an event.

Gemstone and Crystalline dragons can only be bred using their breeding combo. They cannot be single-parent or double-parent cloned in any location. They also cannot be used in breeding combos.
Exceptions
• Backflip Studio’s mini-event Shimmering Solstice allowed players to use Gemstone and Crystalline dragons in breeding combinations. The Shimmering Solstice was only held in the summer of 2016 and 2017.

Ghostly dragons are different from their original counterparts. They are independent dragons, so they cannot be used to replace their standard version in a breeding combo.
Examples:
• Flower + lightning = Love dragon • Ghostly Flower + lightning = never Love dragon
And their breeding combos are different from the original dragon
More Ghostly distinctions that separate them from their original counterparts
• Ghostly primary dragons are Evolution dragons. They must be evolved using their Effigies. For more information, see the Evolution Dragons thread.
• Ghostly dragons cannot be bred in the Rift or acquire traits.
• Ghostly dragons are not required for the Dragonarium’s red fire. When you acquire all the Ghostly dragons, the Dragonarium will breath ghosts.

The Monolith breeding and cloning rules are still being reviewed by Deca, as inconsistencies have been reported. But so far, it appears Monolith dragons can only be single-parent cloned in the Rift. They cannot be double-parent cloned in any locations. However, double-parent cloning will fulfil the breeding requirement, as the breeding combo for Monolith 1-6 dragon is monolith + monolith. But the dragon is not being cloned and will only receiving the breeding percentage.
Exceptions
• Pixie, Hedera, and Glyph are Evolution Monolith dragons; therefore, they follow the Evolution breeding rules.
The Rift
To breed the Monolith collection in the Rift, you will need to acquire at least one Monolith dragon (although two is recommended) from the Monolith Egg of Mystery. These special limited mystery eggs are typically available in the Rift Market when Monolith dragons are involved in an event.

Along with the Monolith dragons, the Snowflake breeding and cloning rules are also under review by Deca. So far, it appears Snowflake dragons can only be single-parent cloned in the Rift. They cannot be double-parent cloned in any locations. However, double-parent cloning will fulfil the breeding requirement, as the breeding combo for Snowflake 1-6 dragon is snowflake + snowflake. But the dragon is not being cloned and will only receive the breeding percentage.
Exceptions
• All Snowflake dragons have three hidden elements, but each dragon has a different set of three elements, keeping them snowflake unique. However, Snowflake 7 duplicated Snowflake 6’s elements, so now both dragons have identical elements and are exceptions.
The Rift
To breed the Snowflake collection in the Rift, you will need to acquire at least one Snowflake dragon (although two is recommended) from the Snowflake Egg of Mystery. These special limited mystery eggs are typically available in the Rift Market when Snowflake dragons are involved in an event.
