What is the DV Compendium? This tool will help you get all of the 'inside information' on all of the existing dragons of Dragonvale. Have you ever wondered what the chances are of getting a Yeti dragon with a Kringle and Krampus are in a rift breeding cave? Or the odds of getting a Sunscorch from a friend in the Social cave when using your own Water dragon? Maybe you're curious which dragons have both a light and air element hiding in their dragon DNA.
There are several pages to the DV Compendium. First is the Dragonarium. This resource allows you to view and search all of the various dragons of Dragonvale. You can look by all of the different categories in the real Dragonarium, lookup dragons for the current running events, or even search and filter on various dragon names and elements. You'll see limited flags, and if they're currently breedable. The required breeding combination to obtain the dragon, along with incubation times and all of the detailed odds to get the dragon when breeding or cloning in any cave. You'll find the habitats and all elements (even hidden ones) for every dragon too! Earning rates, magic costs in events, and even quests are available at a glance. And you can sort by most of these items too, see who the biggest gold earner is in any category, or who has the lowest breed chance. It's all available!
The next page is the Breeding Simulator. This is where all the behind the scenes magic occurs, and you can simulate any breeding combination with a huge variety of options, and get results that will be very accurate. You'll see all of the elements added to a specific breed, all the possible results, and all of the different chances for each result. Results can even change depending on the cave you use, time of day, weather, and more. All of this data was put together using numbers that we've discovered in the game, and with the tremendous help of the Dragonvale Community here we were able to determine how most of the mechanics work. All those years of collecting data paid off!
Finally, there is a page for quests as a handy reference, and a page with a checklist for tracking Runic Cave breeds. This is similar to the old Runic Cave tracker that has popped up here over the years, but this one can always be kept up to date with the current dragons and lists of which need to be cloned vs bred in the cave.
All of this is done in Google Sheets, allowing it to be easily shared. All you need to do it open the link and make a copy of the sheet and you can use your copy to do all of the above. And as dragons are updated, new ones released, and limited ones retire from availability, your sheet will automatically stay up to date without having to do anything at all.
So feel free to get started, or read on to find out some additional details.
The first step is follow the link above and open the Compendium (a Google Sheets link). Then you'll need to make your own copy to use. To make a copy of the sheet, you can open it in a browser window and select 'File' -> 'Make a Copy'. If you're using the Google mobile App version of Sheets, hit the back arrow top left, select the '...' option next to Dragonvale Compendium, and select 'Make a copy'. You can choose a new name, or keep it the same, or add your game name to it so you can tell it apart from the original. It may take a moment, and when using the browser you may see a yellow warning that states: "Apps Script file and functionality will also be copied, please review the attached script". Feel free to click DV Scripts and look at the scripts, but they only impact the current document and they're only used for the Runic Cave sheet to keep it up to date.
Once you have a copy, you're good to go. Most of the tabs and options are self explanatory. You'll see fields in a light orange/yellow, these are cells that you can use to enter data. If you try to edit other cells, you'll get a warning that you're trying to edit a part of the sheet that shouldn't be edited. It will let you do it if you click 'Ok', so please cancel. If you do mess up the sheet and change things that you can't fix, you can always delete the sheet and get a new copy of the original!
The data feeding the page is imported into the sheet from our Master sheet. That's how it'll stay up to date with both new dragons and changes to existing dragons. We may be a little slow updating with new dragon releases, so it might be hours (but hopefully not!) before you see them, but I'm working on a way to even remove that bottleneck soon. You'll also see a generic blank egg for new dragons, until I get the time to grab a good screenshot to add to the data. That will hopefully be quick too.
Occasionally I'll need to fix bugs with the sheet, or I will be adding new features. When that happens, I'll post here. You'll need to get a new copy of the sheet to get these updates and fixes. I'll do my best to ensure what you already have continues to work until you get an update, but if something is really going to break I'll post here too.
On the Dragonarium, you'll see a Category that lets you select dragons from the various in game Dragonarium categories. I've also added an 'All' (Single list of all dragons), 'Event' (List of event dragons - handy to see what's available), Hybrid (Lists all normal and golden hybrids today), and 'Filter'. Filter is a little different, it shows a filter selection list to the far right of the page. From there you can select dragons to see that meet specific categories. For example, you can select light and air under 'Must Have', and see all 53 dragons today that have both a light and air element when breeding. You can then click Moon and Dream under 'Include Any' and see the Dream and Moon dragons (either kind) that have light and air (hint, there are currently 14 of them). If no selections are clicked, then it ignores that filter. This can be extremely helpful when trying to find the best pairs of dragons to breed together with certain elements and Epic traits.
You can also use the search function and enter any part of a dragon name there. It will narrow down the search results to those that partially match. It does not care about upper or lower case. Finally, there is a sort option. Sort the dragons by name, breed chances, gold earned, times, and more.
Most of the data shown is self explanatory. If you see the Limited flag as 'Y', but it's a light green, it means it's a limited dragon but can currently be bred today. Likely an event dragon, current month gemstone, or something brought back temporarily. The elements and habitats are done in short hand, so A = Air, Rb = Rainbow, and so forth. You can see a list on the Runic Cave page if you need a reference.
When looking at breed data, there are a few dragons that change their odds if you own 1 or even 2+. For example Air dragon, you have a 100% chance of getting one with Fire+Water if you don't own one, but a 33% chance if you do. You'll see the number listed as 100% (33%) in that case. For cloning chances, you'll see numbers like 5% (30%). That means it's a 5% chance if you use one of that dragon with something else, and 30% chance if you use two of that same dragon to breed.
Occasionally you'll see a blank, especially for dragons like Hybrids. That means the chance is not defined and can be variable, and we work out the actual chances when doing the simulation. The same is true in cloning when you see a ?%. It's not defined and we use some default values in that case. We are constantly updating and evaluating those numbers to keep them as accurate as possible in the sims.
The Gold/Min (Gold per Minute) is how much a dragon will earn at level 1. I haven't added gems or etherium, but it can be added if there's enough interest.
One final tip on the Dragonarium: If you change categories and suddenly don't see any dragons, check if you're scrolled all the way up. If you were looking at a big category, were towards the bottom, and then pick a small category then you'll be scrolled way past the end of it! I'm working on a script to auto move you up when changing categories, but it had a few minor issues with the focus. If I get it working, it'll be in a later release.
The Breeding Sim tab has quite a few options. You can choose Dragon 1 and 2 to breed, and you'll see the various elements they provide underneath.
There are four options that can impact the result sets, including chances for various dragons. First there is a BeB option which just turns everything on, regardless of whether you can breed it or not. Next is the cave. There are dragons that can only be bred in the rift, others that can only be bred in social, and most dragons have different cloning chances when using each of the different caves.
There are also options for weather and time of day. It only impacts a few dragons, but it's useful to see more exact results that would mimic what you see in game. Set it to night, and Moon is available from cold and lightning. Switch it to day, and Moon is gone and replaced by Sun. An option that may not be as clear is 'Own All', with a Yes or No selection. This only impacts dragons that change their odds based on owning them or not, there are somewhere around 50 if I recall correctly. With the previous Air dragon example, set it to Yes and you'll see Air at 33%, set to No and it'll be close to 100 with Fire+Water.
There is an option for sorting results (Name, Chance, or Time - low to high or high to low), and rows lets you change how many rows are displayed in each column. You may want more or less depending on the size of your screen and windows. Finally there's a Target selection. You don't have to select this, but it will show you information on that dragon: breeding combo and odds and it will highlight the dragon in the results. You'll also see a message under target if the odds for dragons are lowered because of too many results, and it will tell you by what percent (.00 to 1) they're lowered. You want it as close to 1 as possible, though sometimes combos are fixed and you can't help but have lower odds.
Some options will not allow certain dragons to be chosen. For example, pick the Rift cave and you can't use a plain plant dragon. These chance numbers are estimates. We don't have the exact numbers, and some details are still not fully known. This is the best guess as of today, and should be very close to accurate. It also doesn't take into account bonuses for using the Epic breeding cave, or bonuses for various levels in dragons. As we learn more of those numbers, we can add that functionality.
The Runic Caves tab is really only useful during events with a Runic Cave, such as the 2021 Winter event. It's a nice checklist to track which dragons you've completed, and help you decide which quick and easy ones you can still go after. Because it's a checklist, the names and checkboxes won't change as new dragons are introduced. It's a set list at the time you copy it. But there's a field in the top right that you can use to update the list, and scripts will run to add new dragons but keep the checklists all aligned. These are the scripts mentioned earlier, when you copy the sheet for the first time. Just enter 'update' in the field and hit enter, and it shown update dragons and clear the field. Reset will reset all checkboxes. The scripts may take a few seconds to run.
I'm considering adding a full checklist for all dragons in a similar manner. That may be in a future version.
That should cover most everything. I hope you find this new tool useful, it's my go to now for looking up breeding odds and various information on all of the dragons. Please feel free to comment here on suggestions, bugs, things that aren't clear or intuitive to use, new features you'd like to see, or really anything you like or dislike about this Compendium. It's been a labor of love, and I wanted to share it with the community that's helped put some of the parts together, and that has kept me interested in this game for so many years.
1.00 - Initial release 1.01 - Fixed a bug with certain dragons that shouldn't be allowed to breed together. 1.10 - 1.1: 7 Feb 2022 - Added historical release dates for dragons, and event history for releases. - Dragonarium categories split into two sections: -- 1) Dragonarim: Categories from the game's Dragonarium view. -- 2) Compendium: New categories, including prior events and certain dragon types. Quests may get replaced by Event Name column for some views in this mode. - Added Filter option to remove dragons with all primary elements (Psuedo, such as the Rainbow Dragon) from filter search, helping to narrow down matches. - Release Date added to sorting options in Dragonarium I would like to thank the DV Wiki team and Schmacklar for his spreadsheet of release dates, as that data was used as a foundation for this update.
1.11: 5 Mar 2022 - Minor fix to enable end of event soon - Fixed breeding chance issue with some dragons in the Runic Caves - Fixed an issue with highlighting some dragons in the Breeding Simulator
1.12: 10 Mar 2022 - Added Active Limiteds category to Dragonarium
1.13: 17 Mar 2022 - Fixed major bug that incorrectly added normal hybrid odds in certain breeding simulations.
1.14: 3 Mar 2022 - Behind the scenes fixes to make thing easier to maintain - Added average fail times in Breeding Sim, and more attempt chance results
1.15: 13 Jul 2022 - Minor bug fixes for breeding simulator
1.16: 18 Jul 2022 - Fix to sorting options in Dragonarium
Found a source for dragon release dates. Will be added to Dragonarium and will have a sort option. Found a source for which events released which new dragons. Will add new categories for these past events in the Dragonarium. Working on improvements to Egg displays.
Quil, thank you so much for all the endless work, data dedication, and DV love that went into creating this simulator for us! It is magnificent to see all the breeding tests Forum members performed a couple years ago has evolved into something so comprehensive and valuable for all DV players.

Quil this is awesome, thanks for all your hard work.
Would it be possible to add checkboxes to the dragonarium tab for plain, rifted, twin, rifted-twin so we could also use our copy to track how many twins we own/need (etc for the other tabs)?

Great idea, and this is on a future 'to-do' list, and sooner rather than later. For those interested in a technical side, and why it wasn't added yet, read on!
The data is fed to the sheets dynamically, new dragons are added, updates done to existing ones, and so on all the time. The way a spreadsheet works, if I just put checkboxes next to all dragons in a list then the next time the sheet finds a new dragon, the dragons on the display sheets will be shifted around to fit this new dragon. You're just seeing lists of dragons displayed from our source system. Your checkboxes would be on your own copy, so they may not match up now. For example, check Abraxas off the list and then find dragon 'AAA' is released and suddenly Abraxas is shifted down, AAA is listed where it was, but your checkbox doesn't move and now shows you have this new dragon and all other dragon checks are off by one.
I have a method to get around this, and you can see it done with the Runic Caves tab. That generates a set list that does not change, even as we add new dragons. Then there is an update list option that runs scripts that I developed to update your Runic Cave list and move checkboxes to the correct locations after the update. It's not simple, but it can be done. The checklists would be a little more complicated, there are more things to track and getting the display right isn't as easy. I could also have the Dragonarium display the checkboxes based on this new tab, but you would interact with it on the new tab and not the Dragonarium.
A second issue is that players want to track dragons in different ways. Some want checkboxes, and just track 'any version'. Some want to track eggs, some don't. And others want to track normal, twin, rift, and rift twin versions of everything. And others want counts and not boxes, as I like to have 2 of every dragon in normal form if I don't have a twin. I'm looking at options to allow you to configure it however you'd like it displayed and tracked.
Even more technical, I could write scripts that when you click the Dragonarium checks it updates another tab. These on event triggers can run very slow and feel like a clunky interface at times, no one likes clicking something and not having it update for another second or two, it just feels off. If I can find a better way that feels right, I'll add that too.
This is amazing work Quil . Thank you for creating this wonderful tool for us to use.
Wow! Just WOW! Thank you, Quil for all of these amazing helps/tips/aids! 🤩 Over-the-top fantastic! 👍🏻👏🏻😃 Cannot even imagine how much time and effort you have put into this. Buckets of appreciation and thanks! 🥰 Once i figure it all out i know i will be using it daily!
I found an issue with eggs being displayed. I had them sourced in several different methods, and it turns out that new dragon eggs (like for the current event) were not displaying in the Google Sheets app. They looked fine on browser version on the sheet, they were just missing in the other. Appears to be a fairly known issue with Sheets and images and Google Drives.
I rebuilt all the eggs, moved them to my Google Drive, and they're referenced correctly from there so that they'll now show up in the Compendium. No changes on your end is needed, no new version was required, it's all in the backend. I was able to recreate about a dozen eggs that just had looked terrible and get slightly better versions of them, spending much time with photo editors.
If you see anything weird with eggs, let me know. I probably missed something.
I'm planning on adding eggs directly into the sheet for the next version, and not have them all copied across the network. Then if you can't find an egg (like a new one) THEN it'll go across the network and get them. That should speed up loading things and make everything feel quicker. I'm just not looking forward to clicking 'insert image in cell' and dragging a picture over 700 times, lol!

Oh my! I don’t envy you at all. I know how time-consuming images can be. It’s such a challenge to get them to look good. And even then, they’re still not right. 700 eggs is 58 dozen times you had to messing with eggy images. Bless your DV heart! 🥚

I took shortcuts on the eggs, so it's not anywhere near that bad. I did edit/create all of the 60 banner images from the game's Dragonarium and made some new ones, but I grabbed the egg images from multiple places as there are many sources for them. A couple dozen needed to be recreated, I wasn't happy with how they looked. Now I did add all 700 eggs to my Google Drive, got the long file id links for each, and matched them all up with eggs in the shared sheet. And for each new dragon, I just create the new image - what was taking me an hour to figure out at first, I can do in a min or two now once you learn what things do what in the editor.
I'm trying to determine if loading the images directly into the Sheet is faster for users than pulling them across from the Google Drive. It appears so, but in either case it has to pull either the Sheet with the images when you open it, or the page with the links to the images, across to you when you open the Sheet so it may just all be the same in the end. I just notice the images loaded directly on the copy of the sheet seem 'quicker'. But to do it this way, I have to click every cell next to a dragon name list, go through some menus, drop a file from my PC into the cell, and repeat 700 times. I've done about 10% so far, just as a test. I've heard there's a feature request to Google to mass insert images from your PC into cells, but no word on that. And someone did a third party app that will do it, but it fails more often than it works.
I do have a new beta version that has release dates and release initial event history for all dragons. It works, but looks a bit of a mess and I'm trying to clean it up.
