I've already got some great gem buddies from another forum, and I joined a gem circle to help me get the tree. I'll hopefully get that in a couple weeks or so.
I haven't bothered with boosts yet. I know I should to help get more dragoncash, but I only have one empty island at the moment (working on clearing the others) so I don't want the negative impact from opposite elements. Once I get my habitats spread out, I'll get some. I suppose the plant boost is relatively useless since the habitat fills up so fast? Unless I want to sit there all day and watch it.
In regards to shrines, does anything happen with them if we level dragons to 20? Or do the shrines just stay at gold after we get the 50 at 15. I know it's super expensive to get even one dragon to 20, but I would assume there's some kind of award for it? Maybe not.

If you can look at your mix of dragons, there will be a way to split them so the negative boosts are minimised. Remember, the boosts affect the dragons, NOT the habitats. So, for example, you can have an earth habitat with earth/plant hybrids, with a plant boost. One very good combo is fire and lightning boosts together, double-boosting firefly and scorch dragons. The combinations are endless, and can really increase your DC.
The plant habitats are better once you can turn them into giant habitats, as the max DC goes up to 50,000. Makes collecting much easier.
At the moment nothing happens shrine-wise when you crown dragons. There is just the satisfaction of doing it. Some people like to crown the dragons they use in the colisseum first. Always put your highest earners with the correct element in there. It seems counter-intuitive, but you earn the DC that they would have got in their habitats, without any breaks when the habitat maxes out.
Kindle park1: nearly all dragons are frolicking in their habitats! (A Thorny little problem to resolve...)
Smartphone park2: Geode, a dragon with rocks in! Still to breed 4 dragons...
Holy cow. I stopped playing in 2012 I think and I just downloaded the app again. I spent a good 5 minutes trying to find my islands to collect long forgotten treasures. I have about 780 gems and 900m gold. What on earth am I supposed to be doing nowadays?

What? OMG...I've been sending gems for two years and you haven't been even playing? Lol

We have levels past 40 now? I seriously need someone to catch me up. I think I just bread the aurora dragon though. Third try after my big return. Are papers and Panlongs still good? Is metal part of a epic dragon yet? Are my leap year dragons still cool? What the heck am I doing?

Right, *settles glasses on nose*.
Max level is 60.
Aurora is the newest limited. You have arrived the tail end of the Bring 'em Back event (BeB) where all limiteds are available. This typically happens at the end of each year. Paper has been joined by cotton and leathery as anniversary dragons. In fact, there's a whole host of limiteds you would've missed. Most will come round during the year but Century and Bicentennial (100th and 200th dragons) won't, and neither will the aforementioned anniversary dragons. Panlong, leap year and blue moon come round on long cycles but you may already have them. Victory pops up every so often during international sporting events. Apocalypse was for the end of 2012 so it may not return normally but depending on when you stopped, you may have it. Other recurring limiteds include a two Seasonal dragons for each season, quarterly gemstone dragons, lots of sun/moon epics (which can now breed together) and lots of holiday dragons.
BF have run multiple events where certain park activities (collecting from habitats, breeding dragons etc) earn you a special event-specific currency, which gets traded in for a series of prizes. Most decorations are available in the market to buy, and the dragons you could've earned are available to breed. They include the Light and Dark Rifts (introducing two new base elements), Dusk and Dawn (breed using Sun and Moon) and Ovalith (breed with Panlong and Bloom. Yeah. Sorry). There was also a Halloween event with the Nosferatu Dragon, but I suspect that it may come back next Halloween. The dragons from the recent Christmas event, four Identically named Snowflake dragons, are not available to breed normally.
The coal dragon was available Dec 24-26 for players to give to each other when gifting gems, but is otherwise not available to breed.
You may have noticed, or not, that like+like is no longer certain for cloning, even for epics. This has made breeding slightly more complicated, to say the least.
Metal is part of a few limiteds and epics, though still not as common as fire and plant.
LYDs are still cool. The BeB has made them less exclusive though.
Edit: I forgot the Dragonarium! The building alone on a small island by the breeding island! It keeps a record of what dragons and pedestals you have, so it is super useful! Limiteds are marked with a small hourglass, when it's green it means it is available. Paired with the sandbox, it should help you work out what you are doing. I would recommend breeding for century, bicentennial, cotton and leathery. If you have time, add dawn and dusk to that list. We only have until Monday, so may the odds be ever in your favour.

thank you Kiwi. I'm trying very hard to breed a cotton dragon. Crunch time has compelled me to speed up an incubation or 20....and I'm finally calling it quits on the breeding tonight now that I have 4 aurora dragons. I mean, great for getting them...but loooooong fails.

Hey so glad not to be the only one to pick the game up again after a year not playing. Left the game at level 40 but so excited with all these possibilities now. After 10 days of playing Nearly level 49 and really enjoying the game again. Thank you Kiwi for filling in all the bits we've missed. Good site and lots of info for my bedtime reading.? can't believe that 2 of my gem friends are still with, love those guys but looking for some more though. Posted in the gem thread.

Hi all I'm pretty new to this game and I'm totally addicted already .. The only thing I'm gutted about is not being able to get the new dragons released for example ovalith as I don't have Panlong or bloom so really gutted ... But I'm also guilty of spending real money and need to stop and be more patient ... But seeing the potential of some peoples parks makes me want all the dragons now x

Impatience... Eats away at us all!
The best piece of advice I can give you is to remember to take it slow and steady. Think that in one year you will pretty much have all the dragons you can! That's what kept me sane anyways (if I am sane...)
I started a year ad two months ago now, and I only have 30 odd dragons to go! I remember when I started and I wanted everything! The most important thing for you to do is to get a few friends (do you use facebook or Gamecentre to connect?) and to hoard gems for the all important Epic Breeding Island and other such stuff!
If you need any help, just ask! This community will solve pretty much any query you have, or that's what I found and they're all really kind and welcoming!
Hope to see you around!

Welcome. It's great to have you here.
I have just started a new park myself, just reached level 14, so I can start getting the water dragons, which allows me to try for this months gem dragon. Not even close to being able to try for Solar Eclipse or Equinox yet which need the air element. But I'm patient and methodical by nature, so I'm in no hurry.
It's good that you can get 2 gems for each goal you finish by by sharing on Twitter and Facebook. This works whether you actual share the news or not, so make sure you click the links to share them, even if you don't have a Twitter account.
Hi fletch I didn't know about that one ... Where abouts is the link ? Sarah
It's the little buttons on the side of the completed quest dialog:
Click on both buttons above! When you click Twitter, if you don't have a Twitter, a few boxed will come up... Just press cancel. However you still receive the gem because as soon as you click the button share it registers as a gem. On FB just share it as a private message, so only you see it. Again, you get the gem, whether or not you actually promote the game...
