DragonVale 2.0
Backflip Studios has just released the biggest update for DragonVale since the game started more than 2 years ago. Light and Dark dragons have been added to the game. But they need to be earned rather than bought by collecting "magic" through playing the game (more on this below). You get to choose which gets added first, and it starts with a new ...
Rift Island
A brand spanking new island has been added to your park, to the right of the Breeding Island. The Gemstone Island has been displaced up and to the right to accomodate for this. As an 'Event Island' it might be there for all sorts of fun and games in the future, but for the moment its entire focus is on the return of Light and Dark magic to DragonVale. It has the following things on it which can't be moved.
"Tines of the Scar"
"The wizards have constructed this arcane apparatus to harness the wild magics of the Rift. They speculate that if enough magic is collected and channeled through the Rift, it will be a beacon to guide the long lost Light and Dark dragons back to our world."
"Rift Egg Edifice"
"The Rift Eggs were created when the Light and Dark dragons instinctively sensed the coming of the Cataclysm that formed the Scar of the World.
Now that Light and Dark magic is returning to the world, the Rift Eggs' purpose has become clear. The first dragons through the Rift will forever imprint their elemental magic upon the eggs, determining the form of the mysterious dragons dormant inside."
As you earn "magic" (more on this below) you get to vote on whether you want Light or Dark to be added to your park first. You get two decorations:
"Dark Remnant"
"The Dark Remnant reverberates with power long lost to the world.
Continuing to cast Dark Magic will cause the Remnant to transform and upgrade to an exclusive habitat with a Rift Dragon Egg."
"Light Vestige"
"The Light Vestige represents magic that hasn't been seen in uncounted Ages. Continuing to cast Light Magic will cause the Vestige to transform and upgrade to an exclusive habitat with a Rift Dragon Egg."
As you vote you get to collect Rift eggs, but it seems that BFS are collecting the votes of ALL players to make the decision on which element gets released to our park first. A quick glance at the rules makes it seem like the first element to receive 30 billion magic is the first one released to all the DragonVale parks. So vote for your favourite, and convince others to do likewise. The chase is on.
Magic
A 4th currency has been added to the game to join Dragon Cash, Gems and Food, and it is called "Magic". This magic is much like Experience Points in that it is collected when you do most things around the park, like clearing obstacles, constructing buildings, habitats & decorations, growing food, levelling up dragons and hatching eggs. Also winning in the Colosseum and the Race Track. You can also buy it for real cash like you can the other three currencies.
But it has a max you can earn at one time of 1500 so you should spend it when you get close to the cap. You also earn less per task as the day goes on but your earn rate gets reset every 24 hours. What can you spend it on? You use it to vote for the Light and Dark magic in the two decorations I started this thread with. See how it's all coming together?

DragonVale 2.0 - What you need to know![/b]
**Game Play Hints**
3199 magic required to get from the Decoration to:
Small Reward Habitat + Rift Egg (can hold 1 Dragon)
5600 magic required to get from the Small Reward Habitat to:
Large Reward Habitat (can hold 3 Dragons)
7200 magic required to get 2nd Rift Dragon Egg
9999 magic required to get from the Large Reward Habitat to the Giant Reward Habitat (can hold 5 Dragons)
14000 magic required to get 3rd Rift Dragon Egg
Reward habitats do not count towards your habitat total.
You get one chance to buy a free upgrade for 99 cents. This is only available for the first upgrade and is essentially a purchase of 3199 magic as it does not erase the total you had earned but moves that in to earnings for the next upgrade. If you do not purchase it before earning 3199 magic in a decoration and upgrading it to the Small Reward Habitat you will have missed your chance and it disappears from the market.
Other Changes
Oh yes ... they have added more habitats. Players at Level 18 will notice it first and it caps out at 53 habitats for players at Level 50. Oh yes, you can now get to Level 50. Also, a 9th Island is available to add to your archipelago and rewards are there for people with Gold shrines paid retroactively. So heaps of regular goodies as well.
Breeding rules have changed though, with most people hoping it's just whilst the Rift is open. Same + Same no longer guarantees you Same. Epic dragons are no longer a guarantee, and epics breed together give you a dragon based on the elements required to make them in the first place. For example Blue Moon (which is made with Cold + Lightning originally) + Blue Moon can give you a Storm or a Hail dragon OR Blue Moon (and presumably Sun/Moon depending on the time of day).
We will be editing this post as we learn more. Please reply with anything you find out.
